Quarter White: seasoned perfectly, juicy, meaty, delicious Fries: steak fries, crunchy, salty, yummy Yuca: crunchy, not too tough, salty, beautiful cole slaw: creamy, a little tangy, perfect mix with chicken and fries The ahi sauce and the aoli are perfect for fry dipping and chicken. The only reason I would go to pollo rico over this place is that its a little cheaper. I read bad reviews about the tacos but in my opinion, you don't come here for tacos. read more

The spinach, plantains and yucca fries were mouthwatering, and reminded me of food I enjoy eating when I visit family in Puerto Rico (even though this is a Peruvian-inspired place). What prompted me to write a review was Erica's UNRIVALED SERVICE. I have yet to find any establishment in DC - from sit-down formal restaurants to retail shops to grocery stores - that has paid me the same attention and service as Erica. A friend and I went in, asked for white meat chicken, and they were all out. Regardless, we went along with dark meat, and Erica gave us a free side since we couldn't get white meat. She was polite, extremely nice and well-spoken. She asked about our day, and constantly flashed genuine smiles - and not an ounce of attitude! So refreshing after a long day of work! She even brought over the fresh yucca fries to us herself, rather than yelling "your fries are ready" from behind the counter, like so many other restaurants in this city...She also knew how to manage the team so all customers received prompt service - another notion DC establishments lack. Decided to go all out with chicken rico and ordered a family meal to share with a friend. Whole chicken with four sides - opted for the house salad, plantains, spinach and potatoes, and fried rice. Really, the only decent items were the plantains and the chicken. Everything else was pretty horrible. Worst fried rice I've ever tasted, house salad was basically shredded lettuce, and spinach and potatoes was extremely watery. The chicken is juicy and flavorful, but also very greasy. The entire set up of the place kind of grossed me out. All of the food is just sitting there in the open, didn't get the impression that they make sure it's all fresh. I came here because I wanted Peruvian chicken, and this is the closest option to my job. I am a huge fan of Lima's and Sardi's and their chicken and prices were basically similar. I order a quarter chicken white meat, black beans over rice, and the spinach and potatoes. What made this rating go from a 3 to a 4 was the spinach and potatoes. I am a vegetable LOVER and was undecided about my other side, until the gentleman in front me suggested that I get the spinach and potatoes, he told me that is why he comes to District Rico. When I got back to my job to eat, I was mad that I hadn't gotten a larger side. The spinach has the perfect creaminess and the potatoes were soft. I ordered the dark meat half-chicken with chickpeas and yucca - Absolutely delicious and the chicken just fell off the bone, the skin crispy and with more meat than bone. To me, this is an average Peruvian Chicken place. I had the 1/4 dark meat which was warm with crispy skin with tons of flavor, yet I found the meat itself to be slightly fatty and almost a tad chewy. Also I was not impressed with the mild yellow sauce, as it just seemed off. For sides, I wanted the chickpeas but though of it too late and instead ordered mashed potatoes w/gravy and corn on the cob. Corn will def get skipped if I go back but the mash potatoes were perfect. Considering the lack of choices in that particular block, it's convenient and tasty enough to stop in. I know if i'm ever back at the WalMart I might give it another try, but I don't see myself taking a detour in my usual commute to head here. read more

I can't count the number of times that I walked past this place on my way to Walmart. Time and time again, I promised to stop by and, finally, when I saw someone I know post a glowing review, I knew it was time for me to stop in. The restaurant is setup in a similar fashion to Chipotle, so I admit that I was rather taken aback by the politeness of the workers. Everyone was cheerful and helpful and one of the employees even let me try a sauce to help me make up my mind as to which one I wanted. As for the food, I thought that the menu seemed a little bare. I opted for the 1/4 white meat chicken, plantains, and rice. Now, I didn't realize that the rice had chicken in it. (Vegetarians, beware!) I was admittedly a little disappointed because it tasted like my meal had way too much starch in it. That's probably my fault, but I wish the rice had come with it, so you could use your two sides for vegetables and plantains. The chicken was well seasoned and not too dry. I felt that it could have been a little more moist, but it wasn't anything to complain about. Now, the plantains are where they deserve all of the accolade. As someone from the Caribbean, I am very particular about my plantains. They were sweet, a little crispy, and just right. Even if the rest of the food was mediocre, I would come back from for the plantains. Do yourself a favor and pick some up. Chicken Rico is my go-to-spot. The chicken is slow-roasted on a skewer every morning, and it is probably the most savory, and best cooked chicken I have had in DC. If there were any bones, the chicken would fall off faster than Ricky Bobby can say grace. The Lima chicken sandwich is to die for; it will melt in your mouth. Make sure you get the green and yellow sauces on the side, the green packs a bit of a kick but can be leveled out with some yellow. Also, the staff here is extremely friendly and accommodating. The opening of Chicken Rico was long awaited. It seemed like the topic of when is it going to open its doors was one of the dominant water cooler conversations at work. There are not many places to eat in this area, particularly on weekends or after standard business hours. Finally it had opened and most of my colleagues purchased something from there during its first week of opening. I jumped on the bandwagon and tried it. I ordered a burrito, which was mediocre. It was prepared in back, away from my line of sight, behind a solid wall. I did not like that at all. I want to be able to see my food being prepared when I order from fast food places. The fries were hot and the sauces were tasty. Since then, I have eaten there a couple times, trying different items on the menu. The most recent time was extremely disappointing. Went in for first time and ordered Pollo Saltado. The attendant rang in a Chicken Caesar Salad. I pointed out that I I didn't order a Chicken Caesar Salad but a Pollo Saltado and a new ticket was entered. I was then charged for a Pollo Saltado and a Chicken Caesar Salad both. When I asked for a refund I was only offered base price without tax. They also refused to refund any money to my credit card but to offer cash only notwithstanding several requests to refund me on my credit card since that's how I had paid. While this dispute process was underway they never made my food. At least three others came in and ordered while I was disputing the bill. I waited approximately 30-40 minutes, never got what I ordered, nor did I get a complete refund of monies paid. When I asked for the initial credit card receipt back the attendant refused to give it back until I threatened to contact police. I left without a full refund but initiated a dispute on my credit card. I will take my money elsewhere. read more

The food from here was so good. My parents and I were visiting the Capitol and were a bit tuckered out after our tour. I went and picked up carryout and it was an instant hit. I consider myself a bit of a Pollo a La Brasa connoisseur and the chicken is the best I've had. The yucca was golden and delicious, the plaintains perfect and plentiful, and the beans perfectly seasoned.
