Meh. This place is not that great, so I'm surprised by the high reviews. Went here a few months ago and ordered a 1/4 dark with two sides (plantains and beans and rice). It was mediocre at best. The chicken wasn't particularly flavorful, and the sides were ho-hum. The only redeeming quality was that the portion size is HUGE. I mean, seriously, you're given a lot of food for the price. So it's just too bad that the food lacks taste and flavor. You're much better off placing the exact same order at Crisp & Juicy, which is far superior to this place (but with smaller portions). read more

I'm sick.... And tired of being marginalized. Initially customer service was as good as the food, in this place. I must say that the food is pretty, darn, good. However, with some of the newer staff, I sense a deliberate marginalization toward a certain demographic, (dark skinned males). I had actually, stopped going to this store, but today I craved the food and I took a chance, hoping things had gotten better. Much to my chagrin, it's worse, and more blatant. Yum! This is a great place for takeout or delivery. They are on Uber Eats and Postmates or you can call them yourselves for pickup. They offer 1/4 chicken white or dark meat with two sides for under $10. The chicken is delicious and cooked perfectly and they offer tons of sides to choose from. The steamed veggies are a bit soggy, but the yucca, fries, mixed greens and black beans are all delicious. I love finding places that serve yucca, and theirs is perfectly cooked. Their burritos are great as well, and are huge. I'd bet you could get two meals out of one of their burritos. This review is PURELY for the cashier and his disrespectful attitude! First off he seemed pretty clueless to what was going on so I was patient. I ordered a 1/2 chicken platter and my friend ordered the same. Upon cashing out he rushed us to pay for our food (very rudely might I add) then he almost made me pay for the wrong order. I went there today on a whim after looking at the yelp page for it due to all the good reviews and was met with nothing but disappointment. I ordered a biste al lo pobre and my friend had a carne asada. It was terrrrrrrrrible, the food was burnt, bland, the employee serving us the food looked high and I don't know how this is possible but the meat taste like hotdog. I mean hotdog isn't even on the menu, so I just don't know. But if that's enough the icing on the cake when I go take a bite of the only thing That looked edible (the Rice) it had a chunk of styrofoam. Chicken Rico or District Rico. I am not sure ..but the chicken was good and the spinach. I wish the spinach had more seasoning but I prefer a under salted taste to over seasoning but may it may need a tad more spice. the plantains were yummy and the meat was made succulent. We loved the lomo saltado so much that we came back again. Very happy to have found this place during our short visit to DC.

I'll just start off by saying that I've had a lot of great experiences with this place, but one really troubling one. I called to place my order and was told that I didn't need to place it, instead I should just come and the chicken would be ready. When I walked over there 10 minutes later, they had run out of chicken. It was annoying. I think you can separate out the "great" restaurants from the "good" by how they deal with complaints. I'm happy to say that the owner personally reached out to me and apologized for the issue. He took complete responsibility and made things right. Okay, onto the review of the food: Hands down, this is some of the best chicken I've ever had. I love Peruvian chicken and Chicken Rico does it right. Great flavors, juicy chicken, it's simple, but it works. For around ten dollars you can get a half chicken and two sides -- enough to feed two people at lunchtime. My girlfriend and I regularly do this and we are always full. We've decided the yuca and plantains are the best sides on the menu, but the chickpeas and spinach are also solid choices. If you want to spend around $20, the whole chicken can last you two meals for two easily and is a little more economical. In summary, great food, great prices, and great customer service. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes chicken. read more

Delicious Peruvian chicken!! I visited the location during lunch hours. They really know how to move a crowd. You are in and through the line in minutes! The portions are very generous here - especially the starches. I honestly got 4 meals out of a half chicken dinner!! Enjoying Peruvian chicken is all about the sauce on the side. My only gripe with this spot is that the little cups of wonderful sauce they provide is half way filled. They are tiny size cups. They will give you one or two sauces with 1/4 chicken purchase. They give you 3 with a half chicken. You can purchase additional cups for 25 cents. So unfortunately I didn't enjoy my chicken as much so I feel a little cheated. My suggestion to the restaurant is to use the same cup as the salad dressing if you're only gonna fill them half ways and to double to disbursement if I have double the chicken! It's Peruvian Chicken which is one of the greatest chicken dishes on the planet - what a shame that it has come to this... When I first tried Chicken Rico, I thought the chicken was what separated Heaven and Earth - tender, juicy, with a perfect charcoal grilled singe mixed with a variety of dipping sauces and yummy sides. Clearly was starting to give Nando's a run for its money. Sadly when I came in the second and then the third time, the chicken only got worst. Dry, bland, poorly seasoned - the chicken tasted almost freezer burned. They gave me a side of wilted salad and dry mashed potatoes with only two little cups of dipping sauce. Unacceptable for a place that literally only does chicken. It's almost like the passion and pleasure has been taken out of the equation. Damn..... I recently went back over to Nando's - I loved it. This place catered food for a company event. *DISCLAIMER: I am not commenting on behalf of my company. My co workers and I thought the Peruvian chicken, beans, rice and plantains were delicious. We had Peruvian chicken from other competitors near us but Chicken Rico's poultry was juicy and seasoned really well. Also, they are reasonably priced compared to other Peruvian places in downtown DC. The other thing I wanted to comment on was their excellent customer service. Spoke with Anna about catering services and she answered all of my questions and was patient with me. They kindly catered to our requests by getting a driver to deliver the platters to our office on a Sunday and emailing the receipt to us! Will eat Chicken Rico again in the future. read more

I'd been waiting to try Chicken Rico after hearing such good reviews of the family's other Peruvian restaurants speckled around the DC/MD/VA area, all named some combination of "chicken," "pollo," "rico," and "super." The recipes are closely guarded decades-old family secrets, and for good reason. Everything was delicious. My party of three each ordered half-chickens, cut to include a leg, thigh, and breast. Each came with two sides and sauces. We tried the fried yuca, chicken fried rice, black beans, fried plantains, and spinach and potato. Each item was perfectly prepared and served by a harried but friendly staff. A half-chicken, two sides, and fountain drink came to $13.62, and was nearly enough food for two meals. Overall, a great value. (My mouth is already watering in anticipation of the leftovers I brought for lunch.) The design aesthetic of the restaurant is also superbly executed, down to the sculpted ceiling tiles and the establishment's chicken logo. I can't wait to go back to try the other dishes! read more

This place is awesome. I work nearby and eat here all the time. The chicken is delicious, especially dipped in their sauces. The rotisserie system makes the skin flavorful and slightly crisp, while the inside is juicy and moist. I don't even bother with utensils. I roll up my sleeves and dig in, ripping the tender meat apart and dipping away. I get the same thing every time: half chicken with two sides. Dear lord, they are so generous with the food. The box is basically overflowing when they give it to you. My strategy is to eat half for lunch and half for dinner, since it's so much food (for me at least). I highly recommend the fries and plantains, but I've tried a number of other sides and they were good too. But the icing on the cake is the price. I think the half chicken combo is $9.99. The weight-and-quality to price ratio is superb. I think it's the best deal in the neighborhood. Five stars for being my go-to spot for lunch! read more

I'm sorry, I have been in DC for 4 years and I am just now finding out about this gem. First, I was with my mom who is visiting from CA, shopping for groceries at the Walmart next door (yea, sorry about that). After her 7384 question, I realized I was hangry and decided to go to the nearest place to escape the hunger and her questions. I walked past the chicken Rico window and it felt like fate. The line wasn't too long, and I got the rice, black beans, 1/4 chicken -- dark meat -- and plantains all for $10. Listen, when I tell you I just about DIED from the deliciousness of that meal, I did. I really did. The chicken comes with two sauces -- one jalapeño and the other some sort of mayo concoction to add to the combination, which made my taste buds water. The plantains had the right amount of sweetness and love that turned my hanger to happiness. I will definitely be coming back again. read more

I order from this place only because they are on Uber Eats when I'm stuck in my office and Huacatay is not. The chicken is good (Huacatay's is better) and they have a very good selection of sides. Their stinginess with the sauce, as mentioned by some other reviewers, has just gone too far though. I ordered and paid for 8 or 9 sauces--because the tiny cups are always only half full--and received zero! I think about half the time my order is missing something (usually one or more half-full extra sauces), or they've subbed something I'm allergic to without asking, etc. More attention to detail is needed. read more

The best Peruvian chicken that we've found in DC. My husband and I have found it necessary in the past to go out to Virginia in order to get our pollo a la brasa and yuccas fritas fix. No more. Chicken Rico has amazing chicken, amazing sides, amazing prices and (with the exception of an extremely strongly smelling industrial cleaner that left a bad taste in our mouths), great service. We got 1 whole chicken, sides of yucca, plantains, chickpeas and coleslaw for less than $25. If we hadn't skipped lunch and been very hungry, we could have gotten at least two meals out of this. I'm pretty sure that they gave us sides that were too large for what we were supposed to get as part of the order, but the family meal is a GREAT deal. The chicken was delicious- the meat was moist, juicy and well-seasoned while the skin was crispy and melted in your mouth. None of the sides were bad- the yucca, plantains, chickpeas and coleslaw were all quite good. The chickpeas reminded me of what we get at traditional middle eastern or Indian places out in Virginia. They are slightly sweet with a flavor of cinnamon. In terms of sauces, be prepared for flavor. The yellow mayo sauce is mild, but the green sauce definitely packs a kick. From what the staff were saying, the red jalapeno sauce is even spicier. Eat at your own risk. We got slightly confused about its location. It's right in the development next to the Walmart on First St. NW. It's near the Starbucks. If you're in the area, I highly recommend you check it out. read more

My office ordered lunch, and I got the Cuzco Caesar salad. After requesting the dressing be on the side, I received a salad that was drowned in dressing. I'm not stingy with salad dressing, but this was entirely too much. The bottom of the bowl was covered! The only savior is that the chicken in it was really good. Can't comment on the restaurant atmosphere or service, but I can say that if you're ordering to have it picked up, double check your order before leaving. read more

Ok, ok.. I've never yelped before but there's a first time for everything :) I love this place! I go to the UDC-CC a block away & I eat at Chicken Rico at least once a week. The chicken is AMAZING, always so crunchy and seasoned well. They have a fried rice with chicken OMG!!! It's so yummy, ordinarily I'm not a fan of black beans.. But they are worth every penny. The plantains are also pretty good. Honestly thou.. Sometimes the customer service is horrible, the people who work there often rush you to make a decision or are just plain careless about your experience. Once, my container wasn't completely closed and all my food spilled! :( overall, it's a pretty average experience when it comes to customer service, but the food is phenomenal. read more

Remarkably delicious chicken. I gravitate towards the dark meat quarter with spinach and plantains for lunch. I always tell myself that I'll save half of the chicken for tomorrow but somehow it's all gone before the end of the day... The only thing that sucks is they can run out of chicken, but other then that, this place is great. If you need a quick bite and are nearby, definitely grab some chicken and some delicious sides. 2/5 Food. 1/5 Service. Stopped by the afternoon on my way to Washington Union Station in search of a grab-and-go bite. Asked for the chicken tenders, was told they were out. Asked for a chicken/steak burrito; told that I had to choose one protein. "That's just not how we do it here." Okay, that's fair. But the cashier didn't have to deny my request with a side of snark. I settle on a chicken burrito without pico de gallo or beans. By then the cashier seemed genuinely irritated by my modifications and angrily asks if that will be all or if there are other things I don't want. I tell him no, just please leave out the gallo and beans. One minute after placing the order, I look down at my receipt and realize that it doesn't specify "no beans." I right away proceed to let him know so that they can fix the order as early on in the process. Instead of apologizing for not taking the order down properly, he accuses me of lying and never specifying no beans. I tell him I'm certain I did -- I always specific no beans since they wreak havoc on my digestion. Then he refuses to check in on the burrito to see if it's not too late to salvage it -- the burritos here are made in the back outside of public view -- and tells me that once an order is placed it can't be changed. "You can just remove the beans yourself," he says and then proceeds to turn his back away to me. When the burrito arrives it's without the two advertised sauces. I ask for them and he unnecessarily adds that he "didn't think I would want those either." Low and behold, my burrito is literally half beans. And it's full of gristle. And BONES! Who knows if grumpy cashier had them add those to spite me. read more

It's no Sardi's, but not a bad place for Peruvian chicken...in the city. The chicken is well flavored but just doesn't have that ummph that makes me want to come back. The fried rice has too much sauce, salty but does include chicken and egg (very rare to find that). The sides are pretty standard selection but very average tasting. Not worth the drive, but if in the area, I wouldn't mind a meal here. read more
