Basically a home-grown Chipotle where you don't watch them assemble your burrito. They have a Boylan soda fountain - which is fun - and a salsa bar that rivals Baja Fresh. The burrito I had - jefe style with sour cream, lettuce and veggies - was very tasty, but about the same as Chipotle. The chips were less light and crispy than Chipotle's and the guac didn't have big chunks, so in the end, District Taco wasn't my favorite, but it was pretty tasty all around so I'm not complaining. read more

Came here for lunch and I can't wait to return. Be prepared to queue, but don't be fooled by the size of the line (generally being out the door and up the street) the wait time is very very reasonable.and the service efficient. I ordered the taco set, which is 3 tacos for $7...bargain. I ordered the corn tortillas, one grilled chicken, one barbacoa and one carnitas. All with identical toppings (cheese, cilantro and Pico de Gallo). In addition, I paid for the extra Guacamole but next time I will not bother. The taco's were very tasty, they felt fresh and handmade. All were delicious but to be honest, I couldn't taste the difference between the chicken and pork (although that might be because the meat flavour was masked via the toppings). The Guacamole was rather tasteless, it tasted like mashed up avocado. Which is fine when you want avocado as avocado is delicious but, when you want guacamole it is slightly disappointing. Next time, and there will be a next time, I will go without the extra order of guacamole, especially as you have to pay extra for it. read more

Limitations on when you can order if selection includes items only available certain days, then delivery unavailable. Delivery charges are outrageous. While visiting DC and on my way to Chipotle I walked by District Taco and decided to try something new. This is a counter service restaurant similar to Chipotle or Qdoba. You walk in and order/pay. Unlike the other similar places, you tell them what toppings you want while paying first. The food was excellent. Better than Qdoba, and maybe even slightly better than Chipotle. The flavors here are definitely more authentic than the other places. They have a salsa bar with a 1/2 dozen or so salsa choices and it is self serve so you can have as much as you want. Overall, the place was clean, the food was good and authentic and the variety was better than all the other quick serve Mexican places. Next time I will get the tacos Mexican style, the flavors of the pico reminded me of tacos in Guatemala!!! read more

I haven't been to District Taco during the lunch rush, but can imagine it is hellish based on the experiences of other yelpers. I visited for dinner and it was practically empty! The service was fast, the staff was not mean (not exactly nice, but whatever), and my food seemed fresh. Hooray! That's about it! Nothing exciting or spectacular to report. The salsa bar was nothing special and quite messy, to be honest. The fountain drinks were okay; it was nice to see something other than Coke and Pepsi products. My nachos were edible but not memorable. Even after going just last week or so, I cannot remember what they tasted like, but distinctly remember regretting that decision. The cheese was okay, I think. Maybe I would try it again. And if I did, I would definitely try the tacos. read more

I LOVE tacos and I've eaten so many in my days to know which tacos are of quality. Having gone on the weekend, I ordered the fish taco special and I was amazed. The fish was grilled and seasoned to perfection and the cabbage slaw had the perfect amount of acidity, which served as a perfect complement to the tenderness of the fish. Lastly, the tacos were relished with the best chipotle mayo dressing I've ever tasted, the zesty flavors were equally balanced to provide a nice rich flavor. Would I recommend? 100%! BUT, keep in mind it was a weekend special, which means they have been making it over and over. I cannot speak for the other tacos on the menu. However, I did go with a large group of friends who ordered queso, burritos, burrito bowls, and various other tacos and they had no complaints. For the restaurant itself, it's not the cutest place, but its also not poorly managed. The restaurant is for a (very) causal lunch with friends or a good place to take your lunch break and avoid fast food. As for the speed of service, top notch! I went with a group of eight people and they completed our orders within 15 minutes and they only had two workers making the tacos. read more

Normally I wait until I'm done eating to write a review, but I really feel compelled to do it now - taco in hand. This place is definitely a great addition to the "neighborhood." I went a little safe on my first order - grilled chicken, lettuce, cheese, and grilled veggies...I know, how could it not taste good, but I've been to places that can't even get this right, so I'm giving credit where it's due. Anyway, everything tastes delicious, fresh, and the service was pretty fast. Note that I'm writing this before noon. Any time after that and you'll probably have to wait in line...one that could seriously give the DMV a run for its money. (I know this because I work across the street and can see the crowd from my window). I don't care though, I am psyched that they replaced Cosi with this and that it lived up to the hype. So it's really more like 3.5 stars-- but I was genuinely surprised at the quality of my tacos. Maybe it was the low expectations... maybe it was the hunger... but I'm glad I gave District Tacos a chance. Got 3 shrimp tacos for $9 and you're able to load it with as many toppings as you want. I wanted to try their cilantro lime rice and also got the fresh veggies and jalapenos. The tacos were pretty packed and I probably could have stopped at 2 ... but what the heck, it would have gotten soggy anyway. :) I don't think this will be my go-to taco place (my fav is still the hole in the wall taco truck in Arlington) but is a good alternative for a weekday lunch with co-workers. read more

My coworkers and I rotate choosing restaurants to check out for lunch. District Taco was the latest choice from the team. I was moderately excited to check this place out because I had heard the name many times before so I was assuming it was at least halfway decent. And now that I've tried it, I can safely say I give it a solid..... "meh". Their options are pretty standard: tacos, burritos, quesadillas, etc. I order three tacos for $8 which seemed a little steep. But this was downtown DC so I didn't complain. You get to choose from five proteins and variety of toppings. I got one carnitas (pulled pork), one al pastor (rotisserie pork with pineapple), and one pollo asado (grilled chicken). For toppings I got garlic-lime rice, grilled veggies, and shredded cheese. In terms of quantity, I actually left pretty full, which was not what I was expecting. I'm a pretty voracious eater but I think choosing rice as one of the toppings helped a lot. In terms of flavor, I did like that they had some interesting options for protein especially since some of the flavors would not be found at Chipotle. But I did feel like they weren't as fresh as they could have been. We arrived at 11:30 so there wasn't lot of turnaround yet so that might have been why. I also liked that you could choose between flour or corn tortillas. Corn all the way. While the food might have been a little fresher had we come later, the line was out the door by noon. And I think the day we came it was below freezing and windy. I did notice on the menu that they serve huevos rancheros for breakfast and I've been looking for a place that serves it for a while now. Despite working around the corner I had never been here before. While walking by during lunch one day, I looked at District Taco's menu and saw that they had tacos al pastor on the menu. I always get tacos al pastor when I go to Mexico City. In Mexico they're delicious and cheap street food, but finding a restaurant in the U.S. who can make this simple dish is a challenge. I had tried them at El Centro and they were awful, and I hoped District Taco's would be better. I walked away disappointed. The cashier asked me what I wanted on my tacos al pastor. I was taken aback because tacos al pastor are simply marinated pork, cilantro, and pineapple - exactly what was listed on their menu. At any rate, I told her what to put on them. The tacos arrived without cilantro and there was no cilantro left at the salsa bar. I ordered corn tortillas, but the tacos appeared to be dark brown and did not taste like any corn tortilla I'd ever had in Mexico or the U.S. The pork was tasteless and dry. I had to add some hot salsa to add flavor. Also, the pineapple pieces were minuscule. I doubt I'll be coming back. It's hard to screw up tacos al pastor. I guess this place might be a hit with gringos who've only experienced "Mexican" at Taco Bell or tacos made with Old El Paso seasoning at Mom's. Bleh! read more

The M Street location already has started to go downhill. On recent trips, I've noticed the rice and beans for the burrito bowl getting sparser and sparser; they used to cover the bottom of the bowl, and now they cover about 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the bowl. The last two or three times I've had barbacoa, the meat was in big chunks and flavorless. The carnitas is a better bet, I think. I love, love, love the salsa bar, and that and the carnitas are why I keep going back, but they really need to step up their quality/portion control. It's about to slip to two-star territory. One complaint I don't understand: the service has always been fine and friendly. I avoid the massive lunch lines, so perhaps that's part of it. read more

I generally like Mexican food a lot, but this food is pretty gross. I also don't understand why people say it's cheap. It's not. I got a drink and chips with queso, and it came to over $9. To me, that's not cheap. The service is the worst part. The food runner came out with my friends food and tried to get his attention by pushing his chair... Pretty in appropriate. He also did not bring my queso out for a very long time. When I went up to him to ask about it, he told me to sit down and be patient, even before I could tell him what I wanted to ask. It never came. I asked cook instead and he admitted they plan forgot to put the queso in a cup. The food runner had no idea what I was waiting on and that my food wasn't even going to come. It was just queso in a cup, too -- nothing that requires all that much effort. Perhaps there are other locations that provide better food and better service. I'd stay away from this one. I'm a big fan of district taco and their food but my experience at this location really soured me from coming back. One of us had ordered the tacos with rice and beans, but it was not rang up in the order so they came out without them. When I returned the food to them and informed them of the mistake, the cashier cocked his eye at me and said that the rice and beans were not on the check so the mistake was not on them. I insisted on the mistake and they relented. Then another person in our group got her quesadilla but without any beans, nor the chicken she had ordered. She considered eating it as is but then decided to return it for a new order. When she returned she said that they also gave her attitude and said that since it was not on the check that it was our fault (mind you, beans are included on the quesadilla and is not an extra). They then relented again, but this time did not include chicken. When she went up the second time they laughed at her and then tried to resist making it again. I really enjoy district taco, although I am usually at their metro center location. The meals were fine when they came out correctly. I was not impressed with the carelessness of the cashiers nor their rudeness when confronted with incorrect orders. I would love to come back once this business is sorted out. read more

I'm totally "that guy" who is skeptical of the new place - especially when there's a line out the door. Well, I waited in line with a (nacho) chip on my shoulder expecting another dull taco chain and was pleasantly surprised. The line could have moved faster and the order pick-up space was a bit muddled but gosh-darn-it-all those tacos were wicked good. I got the veggie tacos with corn tortillas and had to admit they were better than the ones I make at home. The "Salsa Bar" has more than just salsa including onion, cilantro, and jalapeños as well as salsa ranging from mild to hot. The hot salsas have a bite but aren't crazy/killer hot and the mild salsas had very good flavor. I also got a side of garlic-lime rice that was a bit dry without much flavor but I'm sure it re-hydrates when mixed with other food accouterments. The restaurant is open and spacious but if loud acoustics aren't your thing then you might want to order take-away. I'll definitely go back. read more

The tacos here are incredible. Light and soft tortillas, wrapped around a juicy interior packed with flavor, which you can watch them prepare and serve up quickly to you. There's also plenty of seating, an AYCE bar of salsas in various intensities of spice, and bilingual signage on almost everything. Came here less than half an hour before closing on a weekday and was pleasantly surprised to find a friendly staff, fresh tasting ingredients, and a clean interior. Boring mass produced taco. The taco shell itself tastes of a plastic bag that they bought from some place else. I tried carnitas, carne asada, Al pastor, and barbacoa.... It was all dry and awful without any distinguishing features of one type of cook. The most insulting was being asked how I wanted it and my choices for a "way" dictated the toppings. If the intent is to satiate the drunken masses, you have a cottage industry for the ignorant, indifferent, inebriated, and the uninformed. Whatever you do, don't call it a taco. read more

On a Labor Day weekend visit to D.C. from Texas, we went looking for another Mexican food place near Dupont Circle that turned out to be closed for the holiday. Lucky us! Great prices, great food to be had at District Taco located just down the street! There were four native Texans in our party and we ordered a bit of everything and everything was good. A beso for the queso! Yummy! And holy quacamole....these guys know how to smash an avacado! Yummy! The fountain drinks are not the "norm" brand but are delicious, especially if you've been out walking in the heat of the noon sun! Word of caution: three shrimp tacos may be one too many...these are not poquito tacos. And if such things are on your radar: banos were clean and well maintained. Bueno all around experience. Remember: When in D.C., do as the Texans do....don't go without your taco! read more

The tacos are really good, I tried carne asada, chorizo and al pastor. Asada and chorizo were really good, pastor was ok! The salsas available are also really. The restaurant wasn't full and yet, it was a bit dirty, I went to 3 different tables and all 3 were not clean. Very good tacos overall!! read more

I just started working nearby & came here for lunch with my high school friends last week. First, I want to say GET HERE NO LATER THAN 12; THE LINE WILL BE OUT THE DOOR SOON AFTER! Thankfully I beat the line, ordered my food, & received a card with a number & a random Spanish word and picture on it. I think that is very cool for randomly learning Spanish words if you are unfamiliar, so I like that touch. In a few minutes, my Juevos Rancheros arrived, & it was the best one I have had to date. The free (yeah, it was) guacamole they added to it made it even better. I look forward to trying more items on the menu, & I will be coming here a lot, believe me. Three-ish. I like that the place is consistent, and there is a ton of seating, but the smaller-than-a-hand-grenade sized tacos I keep getting here aren't all that fun. The flavors are okay, but I'd say inoffensive is safe. Having the bar full of cilantro, lime, pico and salsas is the saving grace. This reminds me of how White Castle used to be back in the day. You'd get a sack of ten and then go to the fixin's bar and load up with onions and lettuce and whatever. I do that here with every taco to improve the flavor and sorta justify the price. Got here around 1:30 pm on a Friday to avoid the notoriously long lines. I ordered fish tacos with rice and grilled veggies, and then got pretty much all of the available toppings at the salsa bar. The Colorado is S P I C Y, especially with a little verde, pico, and jalapenos. Not a bad price for fish tacos (3 tacos for $9), especially when you can easily split the meat and filling into two tacos so it's actually 6 for 9. The food does get soggy though (especially the bowls) so I would recommend eating in! read more

District Taco is fine. Service is usually speedy and efficient, and the minimalist space kept clean. The breakfast burritos are nice option, but greasy, although that's chorizo for you! Salsa verde has nice heat without being overwhelming. Perfectly adequate Tex Mex-ish, but it won't blow your socks off -- no different than going to Chipotle. read more
