The gravy could be improved while the roast beef was okay. The mashed potatoes were nothing to write home about, so your average taters. I understand gravy could be difficult to make fresh, but some more seasoning could improve this dish. The hamburger steak was disappointing. Salt & pepper go a long way to improving this dish. The cheap bun could be greatly improved especially with the griddle. Butter the thing and toast it while you finish the hamburger steak. The prices are good, the food is average, the staff is great, and the atmosphere reminded me of some 40s or 50s movie. We've eaten at the Dixie Eatery 4 or 5 times for lunch at this point and have enjoyed each visit. They get busy during lunchtime, but we've never had to wait for a table. Nothing fancy here, but the 8 or so lunch specials we've eaten over our visits have been really good. This last week, I had a surprisingly good reuben sandwich and the wife was tickled that she was able to order liver and onions. Guess we'll have to go back! read more

Cute little "coffee shop." A friend and I stopped in for the first time for breakfast. Pancakes were excellent. Crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Wait staff was very pleasant and service was great. Constantly filling coffee without looking for a waitress is always a plus. Bacon was disappointing. This is a great small dinner in a quaint small town. It's located about 6 or 7 miles north of Interstate 70 in Smithsburg. There are generous portions of great comfort food at very reasonable prices. Be prepared for great service from a friendly staff. I had the turkey sub and sweet potato fries and I was impressed with how much food I was presented with. Found this great little place while shuttling cars for an AT hike from Pen Mar to Annapolis rocks. We stopped in for breakfast. It was crowded (a good sign) at about 10AM. Ate at the counter and the service was good and the servers friendly. Food was excellent, and the sausage and scrapple were top notch. The food is standard diner fare and is reasonably priced. That, you can find anywhere in western Maryland. That's not why Dixie's gets five stars. This place has a great small town America feel. The local EMTs and police stop here for lunch and the staff are so friendly and inviting that it feels like we're a part of a large family every time we visit. Dixie Diner seemed to be a homie, relaxing, country environment. It had good decent people that made you feel comfortable. Everything was well , The menu had home made southern options that anybody could love, I had bought the Hot Turkey sandwhich, with chicken noodle soup, and mashed potatoes. The food arrived timely. Once I took a bite into my mashed potatoes I instantly realized they were instamash potatoes. The turkey sandwhich was pretty good, but dry even with the gravy on top, and the chicken noodle soup was VERY tasty; yet the noodle quality was that of cambles chicken noodle soup. Overall I'd stray away from this eatery, although from what we saw the desert pie looked delicious. read more

We were shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables at a nearby orchard, and asked if there was a place we could get a bite to eat. They recommended the Dixie Eatery - and we've been back three times already this summer! For me, it's worth the more than 30-minute drive just for their chicken with slippery dumplings. Oh my, so good! Just like my beloved Grandma used to make. It's only served every three weeks or so on a Tuesday, so it's become part of our routine to call shortly after opening to find out if today's the day! This place isn't flashy or trendy -- It's old-fashioned good. The walls are lined with wonderful photos of historic Smithsburg. The counter still looks like it probably did in the 1950's. Felt very at home in the diner. Staff was very polite and they took care of the guest. The wait time was good The menu was easy to read and had plenty of options along with extras written on the board. A lot of southern foods which for me was exciting because I love southern food. I ordered the southern fried steak with a baked potato and Mac and cheese. At first the steak was good but as I continued to eat it I felt like they used a seafood batter on the steak so it tasted like I was eating seafood with cold gravy that had a thin layer like as if it sat for a while. The baked potato was decent but it was very small and kinda chewy. The baked Mac and cheese was the only thing I enjoyed honestly but even then there was lack of taste. The sweet tea wasn't sweet at all. After a hike I decided to find a diner nearby for some good home style cooking. How a diner usually is. But instead I got super low quality food that was super disappointing. I was going to stay for dessert but didn't want to spend anymore if it was going to be the same quality. There is no parking lot here or shared parking lots like for shopping centers. You can only parallel park on the side of the street. Usually the street parking is full so there is no easy way to get into the diner. The town is tiny and old. I can imagine it was ok in the horse and carriage days to navigate. There aren't any real restaurants here so these people only compete with two other restaurants nearby. The food is dated like the town. Typical dinner food. The decor is dated from the 70's and 80's. The menu lacks flair, presentation and items. It's like food made for a funeral home from that era. Nothing special here at all. Basic food. You can make it at home and not worry about where to park at. Only in business because their competition is a greasy Vincent's pizza place or China 88 take out joint in town or a Debbie's ice cream joint. Oh let's not forget Phill and Jerry's sandwich and meat and cheese joint too. There is just nothing mouth watering or distinct about the food. Prices are reasonable. But food is under seasoned or over seasoned. Over cooked or under cooked. Almost no choices. Staff is friendly but it's missing a much more powerful menu and a reason to go there with the lack of parking and variety. Recommended for elderly and town retired people of the town. Certain items are dry. Rather drive 9 miles with parking for a better menu at a different place. Those table clothes are a disaster. They need new furniture and decor. read more
