We had Wait a little bit cuz we were outside and there was only one server working. We got the cheese burger soup, deep fried ribs and Rachel sandwich. The food was tasty. A great lunch break and stop after surviving the Baltimore traffic. The Broad Axe was great decor and even better service. All smiles and very friendly. The crab cake is house made and so are the O Bays flavored chips. Spinach salad with chicken was also good. Our meals were so fresh we thought they were fresh picked out of the garden or the water. Our beers were Maryland beers, Jack's Abby from Farmington a German Pilsner and Idioms It's the Berry a Fruited Sour. So this is the neighborhood dive bar that I've been hearing about for years! It was cool to finally see it in action. I was coming in after 10 on a Saturday night, and I expected a huge crowd and noise. It was busy, but it was no way as full as I expected. I was delighted to walk in to "Gin and Juice" playing on the speakers and easily find a seat at the bar. There were multiple bartenders, all friendly. I glimpsed a Koopa on the right arm of one of them, and we had a blast talking about it haha. My friend got a very dirty martini, and I got the "summer in Manhattan" cocktail. I absolutely loved that cocktail, and such great prices!! I happened to notice the outdoor area too, which was pretty busy. What a perfect place to be when the weather is nice. I believe it was too late and their kitchen was closed, but from what I've seen of their menu, there are some yummy eats. Whenever I return, I hope to be able to try some of it! read more

Came with my wife on a date after seeing a show nearby, and this exceeded expectations for a really great price! I love fried chicken sandwiches, and I love crabcakes, so the Chesapeake Sandwich jumped out the menu--a combo sandwich of both!... and $15? Sign me up. The chicken was super moist on the inside, crispy and well seasoned on the outside. The crabcake was almost all crabmeat as well, which was delicious! My wife got a chicken taco salad, which came in a tortilla bowl and was also very good (with very well cooked chicken on top). My only complaint: the fries were a bit under-done. They also do 5oz samples of beer on draft, which was very nice for when you don't want a whole drink. read more

This is a pretty decent pub to grab a pint and a burger at. Their tap selection was satisfying and their western burger, hangover burger, and Reuben were all tasty with fries or chips. Prices were reasonable. Street parking and parking behind the restaurant was available and reasonably convenient and priced okay. Food was delish. Pleasantly surprised that the catfish nuggets were so good! The fries came out lukewarm. The waiter sent them back. The new batch came out very warm, not hot but they were tasty. My shrimp nachos were unassuming but oh so good. Loved the tiny diced mangoes in it. It was just missing a good pic de gallon or spice. No lime on the side either. Paying through the area, read the reviews, and stored in for carryout. On a positive, i love the look and feel of this place. If I was local, I'd definitely spend some time here. That said, I ordered the corned beef reuben. It was just ok. The bread to meat ratio was a little off and, if I'm not mistaken, I believe the sandwich spent some time in a microwave. It wasn't bad. This place left me torn. Pros: cool bar on a busy street. Cool bar, old school wooden floors. Great service, cool menu with daily specials. They def make things in-house. House made potato chips were great. Cons: although there is street parking and parking in the back, finding a spot to park was tricky. Bathrooms were the size of an airplane bathroom. I do not go at night, but I have gone many times for food at lunch or early evening. It has always been comfortable, friendly, and delicious. I don't even really like fish at all, but I go there when I can to get their fried fish (My favorite is just the fish and chips, which is so good!) or fish tacos. I always thought that fish taco sounded disgusting, until I tried theirs. Now I get cravings for it. The staff are always attentive, friendly, and quick. I've been coming their for about twenty-five years, and I have only had one negative experience, and that was just one random bartender being rude. Because they're piping hot when you get them at the bar, ordering out allowed it to chill for a little and provided a nice balance of the rub to the chicken flavor. Well first trip to Hagerstown. And probably my last. But not because of the Broad Axe. It was clean. Servers were nice and food was pretty good. I got fried ribs as an app and the sauce on them was fabulous. The ribs well they tasted like, well fried. I don't know if everything is meant to be fried or not. They were interesting. My chicken and waffles were good. They give you gravy and syrup. I could do with one or the other. Not both. My wife got fish and chips. The fries weren't hot but they were pretty good. And the fried catfish was good. My parents who we were meeting about 1/2 way got the portabello mushroom which my Mom really liked and my Dad got a cheesesteak which he said was good. Live music and a cool ambiance welcome you to Broad Axe. You go inside and immediately get drawn to the wall full of good drinking options. We had dinner and everyone liked their sandwiches, particularly the French dip. This is the kind of place you easily become a regular customer. The team is on their toes the whole time and very helpful. I do have one recommendation. Being over 80F and the last week of June, I suggest having more beers on the fresh side. Stopped here while in town doing some Sunday shopping, and walked in for lunch. The decor is really cool - darker bar with cool accents and lighting. Had high hopes for it and took a seat near the door. Ordered a diet soda and a water. Upon tasting the diet soda - it was flat. And upon asking the waitress about it, she copped an attitude like it was a personal attack, and took them back behind the bar and loudly dumped them out asking the other bartender about it. She returned saying the other woman tasted it and said it was fine. WHAT????? It was flat. I decided not to make a big deal about it and just stick to water. To make matters worse, she left the two sodas (which we didn't even have) on the bill. In addition to the drinks - we started with the crab nachos which are billed as standard corn chips, crab dip, and mango salsa. They came out and honestly - they were really underwhelming. The crab dip just wasn't - reminded me more of tuna than crab, and there was zero creaminess to it. It was more of a paste just slapped on the nachos. I found myself just eating the plain nachos that didn't have the "crab dip" on it and using the sour cream. For my meal - I ordered the Chesapeake burger which is a burger with a crab cake on top with melted cheese on it. As you can guess - the crab cake really wasn't, and it was burnt to crisp. Then had melted cheese on top of it. The burger itself was good (asked for medium and it was well done) but it was still good in terms of taste. Overall, this place would be best served with a really limited menu, the crab items either fixed or taken off, and just bar food. I do like the look of it - but coupled with the bad service and being charged for something that wasn't right, just OK was just a little worse. Not sure if I would try it again for food - maybe more for a couple drinks and watching a game. read more

So good' Buffalo chicken sandwich was great according to my friend! He said it was spicy, but it was good! I would come back to the broad axe! One comment for improvement! :-) My knees hit the bar when sitting at the bar. I'd suggest they make the bar top a little wider so you don't have to sit sideways! This place has changed over the years, I'm not sure if it's for the best. Number one, behind the bar it didn't look clean, especially the mirror on the wall. I actually mentioned it to the Bartender and ask if it was dirty or just really old; he said he didn't know. in my mind that means it's dirty because as a bartender, I always had to clean the bar mirrors and the bottles. you'll have to decide when you visit there. The food is hit or miss, sometimes I go there and the food is great and tasty other times not so much. I love the style of the bar, old radiators, old architecture of the bar and an outside seating area. They have live music which I enjoy and a hipster feel at times. I have visited this bar/restaurant many times over the years, and I know I will again! It is a stable restaurant in the Hagerstown area. read more

So, my husband and son comes to this spot on the days that they travel down to "H-Town" to get their hair cut. This was their little "hidden gem." Until one day, they brought home some their fried pickles. I had one and I was like, "Where did you get these? Take me to them I want more! LOL!" So, my hubby vowed that he would take me one day. Low and behold, we were in "H-Town" today, and our son piped up and said, "hey, Dad, can we go to the place with the bang'n fried pickles? Those things are so good." Of course my husband agreed and here we were! Let me just start off by saying, "I immediately loved the spot!" It reminded me of the cool bars my husband and I used to go to in Boston years ago. There's one that comes to mind that used to be a the Broadway T Station, but it's no longer there, and it was called, "The Six House." Anyway, it's enough tv's in there so that you can watch the television from anywhere in the dining room. Also, it's clean. There's plenty of parking out back. Now, for the food! Love, Love, Love! My son loved his chicken tenders and fries. They looked good too! My hubby had nothing but great things to share about the Chesapeake Burger. As for me, I started with Kenwood Yulupa Cuvée Brut (California) and paired it with the fried pickles, and I was satisfied. The only request/suggestion I'd make is to make sure there's a champagne glass for bubbly/sparkling wines. I didn't like sipping my sparkling bubbly wine without bubbles. It was flat, and that's no good, even though it tasted good. As for my main dish, I paired Weinkeller Erbach Riesling (Rheingau, Germany) with the Reuben. It was a perfect pairing too! A match made in heaven! I will also say, "the Reuben reminded me of the Reubens from Sam LaGrassa's in Boston." Sam LaGrassas is one of my favorites sandwich spots in Boston, and it's been a while since I've had it, and this Reuben sandwich The Broad Axe" gave me all of feels! I love this place! Our waiter, "Andrew" was awesome and helpful with providing suggestions, and all of the staff were super nice! I would highly recommend this spot and I shall be back! read more
