I'm always excited to share my experiences about businesses or individuals who truly go the extra mile! I moved to Simi Valley about a year ago from the greater Los Angeles area, hoping to escape lack of civility, crowds, and general city issues like lines and forever traffic. I have to say, Simi Valley has been a delightful surprise! It's such a safe and friendly community where everyone is eager to lend a hand, very "Mayberry" in fact. I often wonder if Andy Griffith is the actual sheriff . [A joke of course]. Even though it's a larger area, I still love that it maintains a cozy "city" vibe with everything you could possibly need, just like in LA. One of my favorite local spots is DIY--it makes you feel truly valued the moment you walk in. The staff is super welcoming and always ready to assist you, unlike those big hardware chains in LA where you can wander around for ages before someone notices you! There's a couple of friendly kitties lounging around also. Recently, I found myself in a bit of a bind because my power was shut off for about 5 days due to the recent fires, so I couldn't use my tools at home for this project.. I popped into DIY to grab a solid 10ft steel pipe for a flagpole to support my Starlink, and that's where Raemon really came to the rescue! He was incredibly helpful, drilling the holes I needed, searching for the correct bolts and screws I needed, even offering to deliver the pipe to my home since I didn't have a vehicle that could handle it. I really appreciated that he took the time to help, especially since he was about to clock out. I tried to offer him a tip and gas money, but he initially refused, though I insisted! My husband found this smaller hardware store and we've been mostly using DIY for our interior home project needs. The best part of DIY, the staff. They are all very engaging, will give advice when you ask for it and there is always someone around to help. We use DIY when we don't want to drive across town. They have different selections than the big box stores and sometimes items that the big box store doesn't have . read more

I've had a good experience each time I've gone in and couldn't find the item I was looking for. Jeff has been super helpful and patient. I wouldn't expect him to walk me all the way to where the item was, being that it was across quite a few aisles, but he took the time to do so, even while leaning on a shopping cart for support of his bad leg. It's always a nice few extra minutes spent just looking around the household stuff and interesting things probably not found in an average store. read more

Do not I repeat do not get keys made here! Nine out of ten times they won't work. I've been here three different times for it. Came yesterday to have one key made, got home and of course it didn't work. They said the key master made it, and it still didn't work. I came today and just got my money back. What would I do without the DIY Center in Simi Valley? This place is a lifesaver because they have things that Home Depot & Lowe's don't have. I'm always doing some kind of mod or fixing/restoring my vintage synthesizers. It's the only place I can find random little screws, nuts, bumpers, tubing for my talk box. So I actually buy items that apply to music and electronics. But I get house stuff too like normal people. Like, that replacement bathroom thing you need that Home Depot/Lowes do not sell. Lastly, the thing that really compelled me to write this review, was because of a young gentleman named Lukas. He's another reason that the DIY center is awesome, it's the customers service and people that want to help you. I was talking about how I value that nuts & bolts aisle, that got screws to fix my keyboards, and always find cooler holiday lights there. His response was "Thanks for giving your feedback sir. We've been relying on this place for years. Their prices are not so great, but the convenience is really important for us; especially when we are in a hurry to get something done. Annually, we come for plants and flowers. Usually it is hit & miss, and hard to find knowledgeable staff to help. However, management recently moved a guy named, Amad, into the garden department. He is knowledgeable, kind, a good communicator, and most importantly, he is passionate about his job and plants, in general. Finally, someone did something right in moving him there! read more

I'm in the garden department here weekly. While I know a fair amount, Ahmad is amazing. He's never steered me wrong when I have questions. He knows companion planting, soil types, sun exposure...you name it. If he's not there when I have questions, I save it until he's working again. I have been been a customer here for 30+ years. Well before they rebranded their name. This was the place to go when you needed that hard to find item for your home. They also kept their shelves very orgaized. Recently I went in to purchase some sprinkler supplies and found their shelves to be pretty bare. What's going on with this store. I've been coming here for years since back when it was Do It Center. The people here are so helpful! I was just trying to change two faucet stem valves and could not get one of them out of the pipe it was seized into. I brought it with me when I bought the new valve stems and Randy and Gary helped me remove the old one. They not only sold me the correct replacement parts, but they worked at removing the old one with WD-40, a metal brush and sheer muscle. I could never have done this without their help. One of the worst Experience I have had at a store. Trying to buy something no one hardly in store told to walk around empty store to stand in empty line. Very unfriendly yelled at to go to place then left to stand there while staff of four count money and socialize with each other. I go here a lot because it's so close to me, and I don't always want to trek out to Newbury Park, Simi, or Van Nuys for Home Depot. The guy who works in the paint section is great - he's helped me since like 2008. When I come in with paint questions he's always ready to answer them, or talk me through my project to determine the best type of paint to use. The rest of the store doesn't have a huge selection of items. I went for clamps and bought two, tried one - it sucked - now I'm just going to return the other one I haven't used and buy something else off Amazon. The wood section isn't great. I bought sheets of 3/4" plywood and they were so beat up some of the pieces I got ripped down weren't usable. On other pieces, like some 1x2's I bought, I asked them to get cut in half (48"). I wound up with wildly mismatched cuts... an inch or two off. The last time I was there the older woman who checked me out got mad at me because I didn't have a lumber ticket for the wood. I took a picture of the display number/price on the wood I bought and gave her the code, but she was like, "Oh, GREAT." Shouldn't the person who cut the wood for me have given me a lumber ticket? read more

It seems like the crappy reviews for DIY are from arbitrary horseflies who are intolerant or oblivious to the conditions surrounding the global pandemic that is decimating businesses in Crawlafornia like locusts. I support this store and easily forgive any discrepancies amid the current circumstance in the grand scheme of things. Been coming here for years. There are many great brains to pick on staff for when you have an outside the box project, the selection is fabulous. Many staff members that came out of the trades with considerable knowledge & skill to freely share. From my experience, my challenge is their challenge- Massive plumbing section. Massive paint section. Massive lumber selection. Outdoor living section is HUGE! MASSIVE ELECTRIC SECTION! The store plays GREAT MUSIC. Ok... I understand the policy about kids bringing backpacks into a store...shoplifting. I walked into this DIY to purchase bulbs. I had the burnt out bulb in my hand and my FANNY pack over my shoulder, on my back. I walked past two employees talking. Minding my own business, I continued deeper into the store. The bigger of the employee asked me if I knew that no back packs were allowed in the store. I told him I didn't have a back pack, I have a fanny pack. He asked me (in a sarcastic tone) if I understood why backpacks were not allowed in the store. I told him it wasn't a backpack, it was a fanny pack and I'm not a teenager as the grey in my beard indicated. His badge indicated he was an assistant manager. He should know better than to do this type of foolishness. I'm very disappointed in this individual and the store he represents. He gave me the impression that the only reason he stopped me was because I was the only black person he has seen in his life or in the store. Lowe's and Home Depot are further down the street....guess I'll shop there now!! DIY is a great place!!! They have a wonderful manager!! I bought a cast iron pan, but didn't notice that it had grooves in it because of the label on it. It was during the Xmas rush. I couldn't find my receipt. I called the manager and he was sooo wonderful! He asked me if the label was still on the skillet, I said yes, so by that they looked it up in the computer and I exchanged it for one without grooves. He was an awesome person. So helpful! $150 umbrella broke in 45 days whoops no return seasonal $200 solar path lights 1/2 did not work at all the rest broke in 60 days sorry no refund too long. Tried to buy a patio set end of summer dept manager said $25. extra for last one floor display with scratches and dents when I agreed to full price he than had to go talk to manager ( MOE OF THE THREE STOOGES I WOULD GUESS) Came back and said oh you want the last one that will be $50 extra I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. I'm a regular customer to DIY as I have lived very close to this hardware store. I have always thought the service was very up to par for a retail hardware store but in my entire life I have never seen an employee treated so badly. While shopping I overheard someone, which happened to be a manager, yelling at another one of her employees, saying how bad of a job she had done and wouldn't listen to what the other was saying to the point it looked like the employee was going to cry. I asked what this managers name was and another employee told me her name was Amanda and that's regular attitude from this Amanda. Decent service, not too busy most of the time, and a good selection of most items. They have a pretty nice garden department too, so do not forget to check that out on your next visit. They do not have everything, but they have a lot of paint brushes, tools, and all sorts of odds and ends along with hardware and such. I went here for all of my Christmas lights, clips and other decorations last December. The store was well stocked and after I bought all of a certain kind of lights, they called the Burbank and Westlake stores to see if they had it in stock when I asked them. More recently I went to purchase bolts, screws and other furniture parts that Lowe's and Home Depot did not have. The gentleman who assisted me was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I like the fact that it's a fast transaction everytime and that there are always people to help instead of walking by you like you're some invisible spirit roaming through a hardware store. I will be back for more lights this year and I'm sure many more times before then. read more

Went in to get some keys made. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted very warmly. Felt like I was in a small town. The team member directed me to the section where I could pick out from a large variety of keys. They had a nice selection to choose from too. It's not going to carry the same amount of variety as the bog box stores like Lowe's and Home Depot but the Do-It Center is a sold place to go for most of your home improvement needs. Prices are a tad higher when compared to HD but not by much so it's worth the experience to stop here because it's not going to be a zoo on weekends. The Do-It Center carries all the essentials for most of your home improvement needs and the employees are quite helpful when you have a question. I enjoy coming here because I know I won't have to fight for a parking space and be elbow-to-elbow with other customers begging for help from the staff. I still do plenty of business at the big box stores because of their selection but for my everyday needs I choose this place whenever possible. read more

I was waiting for at least 3 minutes in what I thought was a line since there is no actual arrows pointing in the direction of where the line comes from. I just saw the tape on the floor and stood behind a lady standing on one of the tape marks. Well I have tattoos and apparently the cashier discriminates because the lady standing in front of me asked if I was in line and I said yes so she said I could go in front of her. Well there had been no one there for a minute so I go and all of a sudden a man walks up and the cashier tells me I need to wait because the line was over on the other side. The man even saw that I was there first. Which I then put my things down and left. I will never support this business and hopefully they get rid of the girl who discriminates. read more

(+) Closer option for me than driving to Home Depot. They have most of the stuff you'll probably need, fairly well stocked. (+) Once I went inside, I was surprised how big this place actually is. I also appreciated how easy it was to see all the hanging signs with easy to read large font. Unlike a lot of other hardware stores, you can quickly scan for the areas and aisles you're interested in. (++) Customer service was excellent. One of the staff members noticed my son was playing with a train under one of the Christmas trees on display. They came over to help fix the track and get the train working... very nice and such a kind gesture. They may also have been really bored and had nothing else to do lol. (-) Prices are not as cheap as the bigger stores. There's always a tradeoff, but it may not be a big deal if you only get a few things from here once in awhile. read more

I was asking for donations for a special education class that I teach and I had the best experience. After a terribly disappointing and frustrating experience with Home Depot, I decided to try a smaller store. The store manager Amanda was wonderful! She was very helpful and was able to give me some donations that very day. I was really surprised but very grateful and happy for her help and kindness. Heather was amazing too - she helped me pick out the supplies I needed but at a lower cost. Ryan helped to tape up and place bags of soil/dirt in the back of my car and he was super nice and friendly and knowledgeable. Overall good had an amazing experience here. I totally recommend this store over the bigger chains like Home Depot and Lowes. Much better customer service and compassion! read more

Joe is the best!!!! She was super helpful on the phone and went above and beyond to help me find the product I needed. I drove from the San Fernando Valley to pick up product at this location just because of Joes helpfulness. We had a bad phone connection and she made sure we were able to communicate and let me know exactly where the product would be in store when I did come in to pick up. Thanks Joe! Usually have the parts I need for various home repairs with less time needed to go and find it vs a big box hardware store. It's also pretty easy to get a propane refill there too.
