a once in a lifetime experience that i'll never forget! adam was able to squeeze us into his schedule right before he went on vacation, otherwise we would have had to wait over a month. we showed up at his studio at 10am and were done by 3pm with a short lunch break (which was optional but we really wanted to go to Arizmendi next door lol). since we were only making a single ring, we had tons of time to hang out and chat; adam is really friendly and could talk for ages about metallurgy, materials science, etc. the process of making the ring was more involved than i expected (be ready for reptition). we started from pieces of scrap gold which we melted to form an ingot inside a heated mold, and then this went through several rounds of annealing, pickling, and milling to form a strip. the strip was then sawed to the correct size, bent into a circle, annealed/pickled, joined with gold solder (this was the trickiest part), hammered, soldered and annealed/pickled again because we realized a point of weakness during hammering, hammered into a round shape, compressed using a ring shaping tool from Japan, and finally sanded and polished into a shiny finish. the final product was incredible and definitely exceeded my expectations. at the end of the day we went home with a ring that was as good or better than one from a jewelry store. since adam only charges you for his labor (which isn't subject to sales tax) and the raw cost of the materials, the final price was outrageously reasonable. IMO this workshop is perfect for folks who don't know exactly what kind of ring they want (adam has a lot of options and he'll give you his opinion on what suits you) and people who love learning about how things are made. 10/10 experience! read more

WOW. What an incredible, amazing experience. I worked with Adam to make my fiance's engagement ring a few months back - a solitaire diamond with a french pavé. We just got engaged this past weekend, and my fiance can't take her eyes off of the ring. I'm so glad I worked with Adam to make this happen!! The workshop was about 6-7 hours long, and I enjoyed it immensely. Adam not only gave thorough instructions for how to do every step of the metal-working process, he was also really fun and enjoyable to work with. He was a great teacher, and enabled me to do almost everything myself - turning an ingot of platinum into a beautiful ring. There's a certain satisfaction with soldering platinum together with a high intensity torch and shaping it into a perfect circle yourself. The two things I did not do myself were setting the diamonds (which needs to be done professionally) and creating the prongs. I love that the ring I made is not only completely unique and special for my significant other, but is also more durable than rings that are cast (like the ones you buy in stores). On top of having the satisfaction of making this myself, I also knew that Adam would go to any lengths to make sure I was satisfied with the final product; this gave me a lot more confidence going in. You can tell he is truly an artist; he gave feedback on the design of the ring and was invested in making sure I was happy with how it turned out at the end. He was also very transparent about the pricing up front, and even passed on price savings for the raw materials on to me. The final cost of everything was very reasonable. Since we made the ring during the time of COVID, we both wore masks during the entire session and it wasn't ever a problem. We've told our friends and family about how I handmade the ring (with Adam's help), and they were just blown away. No one has ever heard of such a cool experience like this. My husband wanted us to make these before the wedding, but we just hadn't made the time. Finally, 2-months after being wed, he made our appointment. I didn't realize it was going to be an all-day thing. But, with wanting mokume gane, we learned throughout the day what the process really was, and we weren't mad about it. Adam, first off, is a real cool dude. Funny, smart, and patient. Everything you want a teacher to be... I never did well in chemistry in HS but nobody cares. I wanted to give my partner a special engagement ring, but it was so hard to decide what to get her because she's not into bling and really just wanted a plain band. I ended up finding Adam on Yelp and I am SO glad I did! He enabled me to Make my girlfriend's band, which made it So much more special than if I had just bought her one. I was also able to put a tiny blue diamond on the inside and have the inside inscribed with something I often say to her (the ring had to be sent away for the diamond placement and Adam had to do the inscription himself on a different day). The experience was incredible. Adam is Hilarious and really knows his stuff. I trust everything he says. If he told me to rub cheese on the band before soldering I would. I don't doubt his knowledge. We went through many ideas before I came up with one that was stable and would last many lifetimes. I proposed in June and it couldn't have been with a more perfect ring! She LOVES that I made it! Making our wedding rings with Adam was a 100% FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE!  I wish we had friends that are engaged right now so we could impress upon them how much they should do this! If you live in the SF area, consider yourself lucky to have this guy in your neighborhood.  We drove up from LA to see him!  There's only ONE other person in the state that we could find that would help you make your wedding rings and his reviews were hit and miss. If you're sappy like me and want your wedding ring to have more meaning beyond the inscription, this is ABSOLUTELY the way to do it.  It's an awesome touch to your rings that no one else will have.  When I tell most people that we made our rings, they'll often say that they designed theirs too.  Then I say, "No, no....we MADE our wedding rings."  Then they're confused how we made something that looks 100% professionally done.  You'd think it would cost more to make your own rings but it really ends up costing around the same amount as store-bought rings.  One might think you'd only be able to do this with lower quality material but that's not the case at all.  My wife and I both made our rings from a single bar of platinum and we'd requested Canadian diamonds (we love Canada) ;) Adam is so knowledgeable, friendly, fun and easy to chat with.  This is a HUGE plus because making the rings takes about all day.  And truthfully...you don't want to spend all day with someone you don't really enjoy being around ;)  Adam provides clear, easy instruction and lets you do as much as possible in making your ring.  He was also very helpful beforehand and let us know what design characteristics we would be able to do in the time we had. This review is VERY long overdue.  My wife and I just had our wedding a few months ago and we love our rings.  The fact that we made them together means SO MUCH MORE than just buying them and liking how they look. My fiancé brought me here to make our rings as a total surprise on Saturday. I had no idea how to make any jewelry before then, let along a ring. For those who also have zero experience: THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR YOU! You'd be in the best hands coming here to diy your ring. My fiancé had already sent his design in beforehand to make sure it was doable. Upon arriving, the workshop owner Adam greeted us passionately, gauged our preference on the rings, and gave us an overview of the process. I have to say: we knew we were in good hands from that very beginning!! The day was split up into two parts roughly - 1) making your material (we picked platinum) into a ring; 2) finishings to make it smooth and shiny. My fiancé and I were making each other's rings, and Adam would patiently teach each of us how to proceed with each step. Even though the other would be watching Adam teaching the first time round, I found it very helpful still for him to patiently repeat the instructions again when the second person does it. Adam reads our mind somehow so that he knows when we are unsure of what to do, and doesn't give excessive instructions either! He knows we are both so new at it but yet believed in us in the process and managed to make us believe in ourselves :) The day went by fairly quickly and it was super fun! Imagine how gratified we felt transforming a platinum rod into rings! Our rings were FABULOUS - my fiancé is a perfectionist and even he agrees that the rings looked so amazing in any way that they are better than any store-bought ones, and they were just the way he had envisioned. In essence, Adam helped us to realize our dream rings! We are pretty sure that our friends would all be amazed after finding out how we made our rings and will be bribing us for this place's address. We love our weddings bands. We'd gone looking for bands at stores and online and nothing stood out as exactly what we wanted. We still can't believe that the ones we made ourselves turned out exactly as we imagined and so professional looking. The rings are of amazing quality. What we learned was that commercially produced rings are usually made using molds, which leaves the gold porous. Here instead, the metals are pressed into shape, making the rings denser, heavier and stronger. I was nervous to spend a whole day in the workshop, but time truly flew by. There were so many different steps that the process stayed interesting. And I was surprised at how we really did all of the work ourselves. Adam is a real life version of the burly bearded guy you ask to craft you swords in your favorite RPG. He helped us every step of the way from picking the material to guiding us through the ring making process, not to mention that he's just a really cool guy in general who loves to talk. During the workshop, Adam essentially places you on a guided path and will tell you what to do and when to do the critical steps. There is very little room for goofing up the ring. We actually did end up running into some minor difficulties and he quickly applied a small fix himself, and then returned it to us to continue working on it. He really wants you guys to be in the drivers seat as much as possible, with him acting as someone who gives you directions. My wife and I had a blast torching, hammering, and sanding down our rings for each other and learning a some goldsmithing basics from Adam in the process. Our end product was a pair of white gold rings with each other's fingerprints on the inside. The rings are of professional quality (at least according to my friends who, after checking them out, are now interested in the workshop), are a better value than what you will get at a store, and come with an experience that you and your s/o will never forget. Highly recommend doing this, but book as soon as possible! From the first consultation, Adam put us at ease with the whole process. He was honest about pricing and quality of the wedding bands. He took no deposit for the workshop appointment. During the workshop, Adam front loaded a few steps at a time and supervised us while we were making the bands and even complemented us on our ring making abilities lol. We did 95% of the work which was crazy because we have zero jewelry making experience. The bands we made were high quality, not like the cheap stuff at the mall. If you bought the same quality at Tiffany's, it would be over $2000 and we were way under that. This was such a cool experience! I was looking around for jewelry stores to buy wedding bands for my fiance and myself when I stumbled upon Adam's yelp page. It seemed like a really cool idea to make our own wedding bands, but honestly I wasn't entirely sure how they would turn out. I decided to check it out in person and scheduled a consultation with Adam. As soon as we got there he made us feel super comfortable and like this was a great decision. The rings will be beautiful, and you'll love the whole experience. ------ The day we spent with Adam in his shop was seriously one of the best parts of our whole wedding-prep process. First of all, Adam is a super nice, mellow, patient guy who is full of great stories, terrible jokes, and artistic expertise. He's fun to be around and makes you feel totally comfortable in the shop. He'll even make you a cappuccino if you get sleepy in the afternoon! It truly felt like Adam was invested in us having an awesome experience and being totally satisfied with the end product; it's clear that he loves being an artist and sharing his craft through teaching. I will admit, I was pretty skeptical that my fiancé and I would actually be able to make rings that didn't look like they had been made by a child in art class. Neither of us have any jewelry or metalworking experience, and while my fiancé is quite artistic and good with his hands, I am....not. We also each had pretty specific ideas for what we wanted our rings to look like, and I had a hard time believing we could actually execute that. Adam encouraged us to share our ideas with him in our consultation, made some recommendations when we asked for them, and assured us he could shepherd us through the entire process so that the rings would turn out exactly like we wanted -- and they 100% did. Adam does a truly remarkable job of talking and showing you through each step of the process and giving you tons of hands-on tasks to do. You truly are making the rings -- you are always actively doing something, whether it's using the torch or sanding or sawing or hammering or polishing -- but Adam is also always right there to make sure you don't mess anything up, and he will step in before you accidentally destroy your work of art. We also loved that everything was done by hand or by hand-powered machine or tool -- no computers, no casting, just science and physics and chemistry (all of which Adam will explain to you!!). He also encourages you to take photos and videos, and it's been really fun to share our experience with friends and family through them. One of the most awesome aspects of making rings with Adam is that they are completely unique (literally no one will have the same ring as yours, because YOU MADE IT yourself) and completely customizable -- you can try them on for size throughout the process and change them as needed, and Adam will work with you to perfect every minute aspect of the design until you love it (which my fiancé definitely demanded, sorry Adam, and thanks for your patience!!). Adam is also really upfront about any aspects of your design that won't be possible to do in the workshop -- I wanted baguette stones to be set into my rose gold band, so we made the band in the workshop and then Adam worked with his stone-sourcer and stone-setter to finish the ring for us. Super easy. Adam is also really transparent about prices, which are remarkably reasonable. He charges you for materials at cost, and overall, we paid less for the workshop and materials than we would have paid for comparable rings from a jewelry store -- and, of course, we also got the priceless experience of spending 8+ hours creating the rings with our own hands. Our rings turned out better than anything we were hoping for, we learned SO much, we got super sentimental about the process together, and we had so much fun. I had no experience working with metals or jewelry and no idea what to expect, but we were able to complete 95% of the entire process ourselves because of Adam's incredible ability to guide us through the process. This was literally one of the best experiences I have had in a while (besides my amazing wedding that followed). Adam is so cool the word cool doesn't begin to scratch the surface of how COOL he is! Doing the workshop with him was like hanging with an old friend! AND we got to play with metal and fire! Seriously (2nd) best day ever! My (now) husband and I decided we wanted Mokume Gane rings because we love the unique look, the history, and technique used to make them. These rings took a lot of labor (of love), but with Adam's expert knowledge, superb instruction, humor, and patience, we were able to create rings I am more than proud to show off! Adam is the "sheet!!" As in, he's the sh*t because he's so funny and awesome (: I did a lot of reading and research on all kinds of wedding band workshops from the East Coat to the West, but I wanted to keep it local since we're from the Bay Area. STOKED that this came out on top for the reviews, and now we know why!! The fiancé and I did our wedding bands workshop with him today, and we had an absolute blast--we learned how much hard work goes into making these bands, and I absolutely appreciate the laughs and the honesty he provided. It's rare to find this kind of transparency in a business while feeling like a true workshop to teach you the intricacies of the trade! What we asked for, we got back beyond our expectations!! Combine your high school chemistry teacher and your best friend and you have Adam. The whole day felt like we were on an episode of Mythbusters. We tell everyone we made them. It was such a personal experience and something we're both proud of. We wouldn't have any attachment to our bands if we bought them in a big-box store. People don't believe we made them. We have to break out the pictures of us hammering, flame throwing, wheel cranking, endlessly sanding, etc. They look that professional. read more

By far, this has been one of the best experiences we have done together!! And not just in the wedding planning realm. I'm truly grateful to have run into Adam's site through a search on Yelp for places we could visit for a unique wedding band for my partner. Great communication throughout the planning process, and my gosh, we had such a blast with Adam during our day workshop. From the moment we shook his hand in the morning to our handshake at the end of the day when we departed with our freshly made rings, you were constantly surrounded by the passion for the craft that Adam beamed during the workshop. It was undeniably clear that he genuinely enjoyed teaching what he loved, and enjoyed watching others eager to learn. He's bright, brillant and amazing at what he does and knows, as well as calm and patient with those of us who may have struggled in the beginning (raising hand!). If you ever heard of that commercial, "now you have a friend in the diamond business" by Shane Co and you shake your head no... well if Adam was to say "now you have a friend in the jewelry business", I would definitely nod yes and agree with him 100%. I have been looking for a set of unique wedding bands without compromising my band (of course, mine needs to look better than his..) to blend in with my engagement ring. One late evening, I was aimlessly scrolling through FB and stumbled upon a DIY wedding band in New York. The moment I found out such DIY class exists, I started to research and found out that there are about 4 DIY wedding rings in the Bay Area. I contacted all of them of course, scrolled through each pictures of the vendors, and compared the prices then figured out Adam's DIY is the best and with the best productions as well. I was even more shocked when his pricing is less than my normal jewelry store without the awesome DIY experience. OMG what a great deal!!! Honestly, I feel like a shady vendor that took advantage of Adam because he is a genuine person (great sense of humor and passion for his work!). We were there for about 8 hours but it didn't feel like it at all. He explained step by step with his funny jokes and gave mini history lessons (the fun kinds) and the final products looked amazing. Making each other's wedding bands is a priceless experience and I would suggest you reach out to him immediately :) (even for engagement rings too.. can you imagine telling your girl that you made her ring by hand!? just saying... how awesome is that) Thank you for the awesome experience!! read more

We made our rings with Adam earlier this month (April 2018) and it was by far the best decision we've made in the entire wedding planning process. We can't recommend this experience highly enough. We wish we knew more engaged or soon-to-be engaged people to send to Adam. Even if I knew someone who was engaged right now but lived outside of the Bay Area, I'd tell them to fly in to do this. All of the other reviews have already covered most of the reasons why making your rings with Adam is awesome, so I won't belabor those points too much here: Adam's a really cool dude with a huge amount of knowledge (about jewelry-making, yes, but also puns and hunting wild boar). So, ignoring the fact that you're creating your own wedding rings, which rules, it's a fun way to spend a day. You learn a ton about chemistry and physics; you get to play with some really cool tools and extremely powerful torches, if you're into that. You start with scrap metal and end with two incredibly professional looking rings that YOU MADE. Wedding bands felt very generic and I wasn't looking forward to wearing one; but doing totally changed my sentiments about the ring. It's a really cool process from start to finish and, as Adam thoughtfully points out along the way, it's a process that's jam packed with symbolism about marriage, partnership, etc. There's really no reason not to do this, assuming it's in your budget. If you have very set ideas about what you want, great, you can make it here (I made my soon-to-be wife a knife-edge band that matches her engagement ring); if not, he'll have a recommendation about what will be most comfortable, complementary to your skin tone, etc. Also on this score, Adam is serious about giving you what you want. He charges $0 until you're done and happy. Mine came out a little big (my finger size fluctuated a ton between morning and afternoon, for some reason that's not at all Adam's fault), and Adam has been great about helping me shrink it down a bit to fit. This is the rare experience that is both totally accessible (I'm confident anyone can do this), yet challenging enough to feel like an accomplishment. And it is an accomplishment. This review is long overdue! We made our bands on March 25, 2017 for our wedding in Bali on May 9, 2017 and had the most wonderful and unforgettable experiences ever! It's surprising that so few people know that they can make their own wedding bands and that it's way more meaningful to do so. The rings end up being a lot stronger (as Adam will explain) than store-bought rings, and the cost is also surprisingly lower! There's just no good reason why you wouldn't diy your bands!! Patient, an incredible teacher, genuine, hilariously funny, good-natured, kind, passionate, knowledgeable, friendly, trustworthy and everything else you'd want in someone leading an immersive pre-wedding couples workshop! We decided to make me a rose gold band from my mom's old melted gold ring, and get it professionally set with micropave pink sapphires 2/3s of the way. My husband's ring was a platinum band with a comfort fit and hammered texture. And we got them engraved inside. Everything went perfectly during the workshop - if we ever messed up any step of the way, Adam would jump in and help us fix it, so there's really no risk to messing up your bands! There was a small issue with the stone setting post workshop (since my band and sapphires were so tiny!) but Adam was gracious enough to take it back and get the setter to fix the issue until I was happy with it (I took it back 2 months after my wedding and Adam was completely patient and fine with it). He even gave us 3 extra stones in case we lose any down the road. Honestly, both bands turned out looking so professionally done that no one would've guessed that we made them ourselves, and for each other! Our experience with Adam was priceless and something that we will forever treasure! Your wedding band is something that you will look at on a daily basis for the rest of your life and I always feel an immense sense of pride and joy that my beloved husband handmade my gorgeous band! read more

Amazing!! Cannot be happier! We made our Mokume Game wedding rings on July 11th. Adam is super friendly and personable, we had a great time chatting with him throughout the long day. He is very experienced, we loved his workshop and ideas! Both of our rings took from 10am to 8pm, it was an experience I will never forget or would do any different! We made each others rings completely by ourselves but Adam was there every step of the way to make sure they came out looking professional! Adam is one of the best humans out there. We had such an incredible time creating our wedding rings together, laughing, and learning about each other's lives and the art of metal-work. I cannot recommend this activity or person highly enough. Adam is fair, communicative, and flexible. Not only do we have my favorite and most beautiful pieces of jewelry, but an amazing memory and experience shared together. I haven't written a review in a while but wanted to write this while the experience was still fresh in my mind. A friend of mine got married a few years back and I remembered them posting about a DIY wedding ring workshop they attended on Facebook and had tagged "Scintillant Studio." There is a separate Yelp page for Scintillant Studio which also has 5 stars but this "DIY Wedding Rings" Yelp page is specifically for Adam's wedding ring workshops. My fiance and I attended his workshop in early June and had such a great experience- dare I say, one of the most fun couple's activity we've ever done together. I originally was going to make a simple wedding band similar to my fiance's but I ended up asking Adam if he could extract the center stone from one of my Mom's old rings. He was able to accommodate this request and helped me make a solitaire ring (with no additional charge other than the cost of materials). The workshop itself took probably close to 8 hours in total but split across 2 days. He was very flexible in terms of when we could schedule our next session because we live in San Jose and weekends/Fridays were easier for us to make the drive up. He was very honest and detailed throughout the entire process and explained things in a way that was easy to digest. In the end, we were shocked at how professional our rings looked (see the photo for yourself!). I've received SO many compliments on my ring and people can't believe I "made" it. Adam also helped us engrave our wedding date on our bands for no additional charge. I would definitely recommend Adam and his DIY wedding ring workshop to future couples/anyone who is looking to add a personal touch to their wedding rings. read more

When I saw this on Yelp I knew we had to do it. Scheduling the workshop with Adam was easy, he just asked what materials we wanted and for our designs beforehand. Adam is a really nice guy, he's been running these workshops for 25 years. He was an excellent teacher, incredibly competent and calm, he effortlessly guided us every step of the way. He's got an endless supply of cheesy ring metaphors for marriage that will keep you thoroughly entertained and laughing throughout the journey. We made each others rings, both out of 14k gold and it was a really cool process. I am still so amazed that the gold pellets we started with turned into our wedding rings. Throughout most of the process I was wondering 'how is this possibly going to look like a ring?' and then *bam* out of nowhere there it was! Also this is a legit workshop, I didn't know anything about making rings, I thought you just poured liquid metal into a circular mold, I was so very wrong. I learned a lot about the process and it's peaked an interest in working with metals again. I highly recommend making your own rings, it has been the best activity of the wedding planning, and come on these rings are so damn meaningful! read more
