My husband and I had seen Rick perform at 336 Main in Plymouth a few years back and decided we wanted to hire him when we got married. Wow - were we not disappointed! If you think he sounds good in a noisy bar - just wait until you hear him in a quieter space...an outdoor wedding reception tent perhaps? Amazing! Like I said before - this guy is definitely super, super talented and really knows how to work a crowd. Rick was the life of our reception and made the entire evening a smash success. Nothing phased him - from singing the last part of our first dance together a capella due to a popcorn machine temporarily blowing a fuse -to- masterfully taking requests from the crowd (including knowing how to handle requests from young girls asking for him to play Justin Bieber songs) -to- playing multiple instruments at one time and even dancing a final dance with our guests. We'd hire him in a heartbeat for any future event...and our friends and family can't stop talking about him. He was even so masterful with his mixing that some people thought he never took a break the entire night. Thanks so much Rick - you're pretty darn awesome :) BTW...we've also heard good things about Rick's band - Ultraviolet - if you're looking to spend a little more money and hire a full band to really impress your guests. Our event only had around 100 people so we decided the band might have been a little too overpowering for our venue.

However, I had a TERRIBLE experience with this business today after doing nothing wrong and I feel that I could probably help some fellow brides avoid a similar situation by explaining what happened to me here. I contacted EEG two days ago about renting a drapery backdrop for my wedding in two months. I fully intended on renting from them because they have done events at my venue before, and I am in a hurry. Someone replied to me very quickly and we set up an appointment for today. My last e-mail sent two days ago read: "Perfect! See you then!" This morning, I had a dress-fitting appointment. EEG sent me an e-mail to confirm my afternoon appointment while I was at my dress fitting, so I did not see it. When I got out of my dress fitting appointment, I called EEG to see if it was possible for them to see me early because I was ahead of schedule and close by. The woman on the phone informed me that no, they could not see me early (that's not a problem), and also that my appointment had been cancelled because I had not responded to the confirmation e-mail sent three hours prior. They booked another appointment in place of mine. My mom drove in from out of town to come with me to the appointment. I was very disappointed and when I expressed my disappointment (in other words, I WAS PISSED!), they offered me an evening appointment and proceeded to say "We aren't going to argue with you. Do you want to come in or not?" I said no thank you. This business had no reason to believe that I wouldn't show up to my appointment. My guess is that they got an opportunity to make more money off another client and so they disregarded my business. I am so disgusted and I have never experienced such terrible customer service. I'm sure their linens are beautiful but this business needs to learn that personality is everything when it comes to running a successful business. Very, very disappointed.

He has clear passion for dancing and for sharing his amazing gift with others. He also has the right ATTITUDE to be an effective instructor. Patient, understanding, knowing how to work with "room temperature IQ" types who are "legends in their own minds", and effectively dealing with Fred Astaire wannabes with two left feet, Dorian gave all the people in the class COMPETENCE and CONFIDENCE, when it was clear that he was so, so, so much better than those in the class. I simply cannot give a stronger recommendation to this outstanding teacher. He is a fabulous dancer with loads of talent but makes everyone feel that they are making good progress. If I had to select just one person to teach me ballroom dancing for an important event (holiday party, wedding, etc.), I would entrust that awesome responsibility to Dorian Deaver. It is similar to recruiting Michael Jordan or LeBron James to teach a basic high school basketball clinic. Damn! You simply cannot do better. We were having an afternoon wedding and were trying to keep costs low. The reception was only 3.5 hours long... I needed a good price in order to actually book someone. I already had a few quotes and wasn't impressed with any of the prices, so what did I have to lose? I went to their website to do some research and gave them a call. I got Brett, who was incredibly friendly over the phone. He totally understood our situation about having a DJ but gave us hope that there's good DJs out there willing to give a good price on a Sunday wedding. We met him at a local Starbucks to sign the agreement. He went over every section of the contract in detail so we completely understood what he was responsible for and what we were responsible for. And he was incredibly friendly. His personality type gets along with everyone. I love people like that. He accepted payment through Paypal, which was incredibly convenient for us. His website was really intuitive, with detailed forms for us to fill out with details about the ceremony, the timeline of the reception and even a music form so we could choose what songs we wanted him to play. On one of the forms, I made it clear what music I didn't want to hear and he totally stuck with that at the reception. One thing I totally appreciated was how Brett was willing to do the outdoor music preceding the ceremony for no extra charge. We were having an extremely short ceremony, so I just wanted music to lead us down the aisle. We offered to pay extra but he said it wasn't a big deal. How sweet is that? Up until the day of the wedding, Brett stayed in perfect contact with me. He even called me the day of the wedding to make sure I was staying calm (rain on my wedding day when the ceremony was supposed to be outside... of course I wasn't calm.) But it was a nice gesture. The ceremony was moved inside and Brett was awesome with the change of plans. He still played our processional music, jazzy music during dinner and finally dance music after dinner was served. One detail we totally loved was that Brett wore a pink and purple tie so he matched our wedding colors! Small detail that made a big difference. Everyone told me they loved our DJ. Some people even thought he was a personal friend of ours because he was so friendly and personable while on the mic. He played the exact music that I wanted to hear at my reception... classic rock with current dance hits mixed in. It's like he knew me my whole life with the way he nailed my musical preferences. He did perfect. I couldn't say enough nice things about MotorCityHDJ. They turned us from an "on the fence" couple to "we totally needed a DJ" couple.
