We got food to go tonight and the service was delightful. Very friendly and accessible. The food was a disappointment. We tried two different soups: a war won ton and a seafood soup. The war won ton was just the won tons with no fillings and the broth was good, but it was not what we expected. The seafood soup was mostly broth with a little bit of fresh mushrooms and French cut green beans and finely we found a couple shrimp and a few bits of calamari. The sweet and sour pork was mushy and didn't have much flavor. The kung pao shrimp was mostly onions! The next ingredient was green peppers and garlic. There were peanuts and still more onions. We are not fans of onions, so this was not a good surprise. The rice was fine but not special. We also ordered plain steamed vegetables and shrimp, which we will try tomorrow night if we are willing to eat this again. Service 5/5 Food 2.5/5 Ambiance 4/5 lovely patio in back of the building and nice linen table clothes. Good window seating. Went for lunch with my husband and enjoyed seeing Joanne again, DJ's wife. We had the lunch special at $13.95, unbeatable! Who serves a delicious cooked-to-order hot lunch with hot and sour soup and slaw salad at this price!?!!! And with nice seating indoors and outdoors in a quiet garden patio! I have been living in Greenbrae for 13 years and complaining that there wasn't a good Chinese Restaurant locally; where I could get a really good combination fried rice and chicken curry. I was complaining to a friend ; who recommended that I try DJ's! I did that tonight - DJ's is a hidden gem. The staff were very friendly, and welcomed me with a cup of tea while I waited for my take out order. I didn't have to wait very long. I have just had a wonderful meal and enjoyed every mouthful. Reasonably priced Chinese favorites. They reopen after lunch at 4:30 and their online ordering works well. I have two issues with the food. 1) Their "fried rice " isn't fried. It's just plain rice with veggies and meat added. 2) The Manchurian Beef has pieces of chicken in it. Something's wrong here. read more

Food was delicious as ever, contrary to previous reviews recently posted. We ordered , Orange chicken, kung Pao chicken, Broccoli Beef and Hot & Sour soup were all delicious, and let's not to fit to mention my favorite the sautéd green beans. Back in the day there was 'Chinese Kitchen' in Larkspur doors away from Pinky's pizza. 1982; was a good independent Chinese food take out. Now this place (DJ's) has been here for sometime. The service is very good. The food is just ok. Ordered their Mongolian scallops. Tasted good and prepared well, with green onions. Just the right amount of spicy. My peeve is that the scallops were 'very thin'. Chinsy. Not generous. That bothers me. I prefer a hearty scallop, thick, nice and chunky. Thats how a scallop is suppose to be. Not the same DJs unfortunately. We had a reservation for 6. We ordered and were brought our appetizers. Then we had no service for 45 minutes until we had to walk up to the front to pay for the food that had been brought so we could leave. The entire restaurant was overwhelmed - 20 people stood in the lobby area waiting for food, no tables were proceeded to be served and unfortunately there were flies flying all around. I have never seen flies at DJs in my 16 years of coming to this restaurant, even when it was CJs back in the day. Very very disappointed. read more

We're thinking it would be more like old CJ's we were very fond of. We found out otherwise the moment we walked in. One waitress seated us at a table where flying ants were swarming that we had to ask to move us to a different table. For some reason, or maybe that's the way they always are, the waitresses seemed to have other things on their minds when they finally brought the menu. I had to say things twice each time I tell what dishes we wanted to order. Two of us ordered 4 dinner dishes thinking we'll take some to go. They--there were two separate ones who came to serve(?) us, and neither one was very attentive acting as if they would rather be doing somethings else. And the dishes. Out of four we ordered, at least 3 of them seemed to be sitting in the kitchen for a while--soggy, loose, etc.--especially the chow fun. The manager/owner lady came around later and she was more upbeat and talkable than the girls. Finally, the dessert--ice cream/sherbet. They put a fortune cookie on top of one scoop on a tiny saucer dish. We thought we were going to end the night at the restaurant with a sweet taste in our mouths despite those unpleasant moments. Wrong, again! I found a long hair well tangled up and covered in mine. I put the spoon down and waited till the manager/same lady came with the bill, and said, "Everything was good, except..." and pointed to the hair. She asked me if I want her to bring a new one, which she did after my wife said yes. I checked the highest amount of tip (22%) in the printed choice table. We ordered the combination chow mein and kung pao shrimp and crab rangoons as an appetizer. Wontons were ok but there was no crab just cream cheese. Waitress brought out chicken which I didn't order. As my correct food was being remade we were eating the chow mein and I literally had to put pepper on it for some type of flavor....There was shrimp beef and chicken in the chow mein and they managed to make all three meats taste the same- taste like nothing. I honestly think they just put every thing in the wok added oil and served it. My shrimp still wasn't ready so I asked for the check and to forget about the shrimp. The lady said "it's coming right out " I said no it's ok and she still proceeded to push on me taking it to go, I said yes to be nice and honestly had hope for it. We took it to go and it was trash. This was the worst Chinese food I have had in years. It makes Panda Express seem like 5 star dining. I ordered sweet and sour pork, it was soggy and had no sauce what so ever. it was total mush. The beef and snow peas was flavorless and had to dig and look for the beef. Lastly the pork chow mein was also horrid. I will never ever go back. it used to be good a couple of years ago. Based on a small sampling of DJ's offerings, I concur, but a few more samplings might have me upping my review to 5-stars just like Joe. DJ's Chinese Cuisine is the longtime favorite of a neighbor of mine but I sought them out only recently. Trodding Larkspur's main street at dinnertime, the appearance of DJ's derailed my plans to dine elsewhere. The $20 per person meal immediately leapt out at me. When were you able to get soup, egg rolls, rice (fried or white), an entree, and ice cream for $20 per person? Being a party of two, we opted for entrees of Broccoli Beef and Kung Pao Chicken. Servings were ample and satisfying, service quirky and fun, and ambiance comfortably familiar. DJ's isn't upscale, just well-cared for and loved by its owners and its many regulars. Leaving with a bag full of leftovers (two more meals worth) I was 5-star happy to have finally "discovered" DJ's. Everything about the place left me knowing that I'll be back again, probably for as long as I live in Marin. read more

Interesting entrance which makes you wonder twice about the food, but you will be surprised. It is extremely tasty and authentic Szechuan cuisine. Cozy environment with excellent service and very diligent with recommendations to the liking of your flavors if you ask tell them. Everything is what you see is what you taste.. no enhancement flavorings.. no msg. all good earth flavors only! That's something I've been missing when going to an Asian restaurants. I don't like to give one star reviews because everything that goes along with that is kind of sad. The best thing about DJ's Chinese Cuisine is the walled garden in the back. It has beautiful trees and plants that make the dining experience special. Unfortunately the food we ordered did not. I love good Chinese food for the freshness of the vegetables and the lightness combined with extreme tastiness of the sauces. My friend and I ordered Mu Shu Pork and Garlic Green Beans. Surprisingly, the servings were smaller than I have ever seen. I don't know what kind of oil they used but it didn't taste good. We were disappointed in the Mu Shu Pork and would not order it again. The green beans were perfectly cooked, crispy and tender, but there wasn't much flavor to them. We wouldn't order those again either. The bottom line is we won't be returning to this restaurant despite the beauty of the back patio. I hope they're able to get whatever is going on in their kitchen fixed. read more

I went to D.J.s based on this YELP information. How can it have good reviews? It was the worst Chinese food I've ever had. There was not a crunchy green vegetable anywhere. Everything seemed day old and reheated. The only lemon in the lemon chicken was the slice on top. No lemon flavor. Just dried out sliced chicken breast with very little batter coating. The Moo Shu Pork filling was a jumble of soggy cabbage and unknown ingredients. The Kung Pao Shrimp tasted like a Cajun recipe with too much tomato paste. The peanuts in it were rubbery and soggy. It was obviously a left-over. The sauteed string beans were greasy and the strings inedible. Only the rice seemed fresh. What a disappointment. They are more expensive than their competitors that have better food! read more

No matter what dish we order it's like they're loaded with onions like it's filler. We used to eat here every few months or more often for years then they closed for awhile. Prior to the closure we had no complaints about the food and while the food is still tasty, there's far less protein ingredients with onion and sometimes green pepper bulking up the dishes. We've been about 6 times since and have purchased for up to 8 people (all to-go) and it's the general complaint about the food. We decided the other day it's not worth going back. read more

It pains me to take stars off a review for the only good Chinese restaurant in Marin. But no bitter melon can compete with how sour the service is here. My partner was in a car accident and is on crutches. Not only did they get angry when asked if they could bring our order to the car, they did not include utensils, napkins, fortune cookies, sauce or even a thank you. Now, they might've gotten an extra star because they do have Jelly Belly jellybeans, but it's like one of those claw machines trying to use the tiniest ladle I've ever seen to retrieve the beans from a narrow glass pitcher. And you get one scoop, and no you can't get them with to go orders. However. The Almond Chicken is delicious. I've actually never had anything bad there. Except the attitude. read more
