Love this place. You can likely get a little better fish elsewhere, but you will likely over-pay. The staff here is amazing. My wife and I have been coming here for 30 years, and will still come in 3 times a month. It's far from pretentious, and when it's good.. it's great! On an off day, it's just good. While it used to be an amazing value, post Covid, it's a good value. Their rolls are fantastic; their 'Crab Specials' are to die for! super friendly team! show up twice and they'll know your name. Not to put off the sushi snobs, but they also serve Chinese food. I think it's about the best chinese food in San Rafael, though San Rafael does not set a high bar. Go check them out. Being originally from central California it's hard to find comparable Chinese food in Marin County. The shrimp fried rice is a 7/10 and was the best item I tried during my visit. I also had lemon chicken and beef and broccoli. I expected the lemon chicken to be similar to sweet and sour chicken/pork or orange chicken where the batter/outside is fried and crispy and the chicken/pork in the center is seasoned and tender. The batter/outside was for lack of a better word "soggy" but the saucy was lemon forward with a slight tang. I'll rate it a 5/10. The beef and broccoli had a strong ginger flavor that I was a fan of, so I would rate it a 2/10. The service was fast and attentive and the restaurant itself is average not fancy and not rundown. Amazing sushi with great service and the option to order Chinese food visa-versa! Portions are generous which we love for the athletes in the family! I've been coming here since I was a little girl and the quality and service remain outstanding - 5 stars. My favorite sushi chefs have always been Henry and Cesar. Henry is gone but Cesar and Song will still make you the "Henry Special Roll" - if you know you know! Ok if you don't know, I'll tell you: Shrimp tempura, crab special, grilled salmon, cucumber, furikake Outside: Unagi, avocado, tobiko, unagi sauce - spice, sweet, crunchy, fresh, and just hits all the pleasure senses. The roll is massive and just sits well in me. The hand rolls are also very good and made with love. On the other side of the restaurant is Chinese food. My favorite as a kid would be to order lemon chicken or sweet and sour chicken while my parents pounded raw fish. We always sat at the sushi counter and could order anything on the Chinese food menu which was a real treat for me. As an adult, I really do come for the specialty rolls/nigiri/sashimi/and hand rolls. But the little people in my life often want potstickers, egg rolls and Mongolia beef. But I will warn you that both sides are packed for dinner on the weekends - be prepared to wait. You can choose your own adventure. You'll wait longer for the sushi bar so might consider a table and then order from the sushi bar. Or, you can do takeout - they do A LOT of takeout. When we do takeout Chinese, we never hesitate to order here. My favorites are the Moo Shoo, wontons, potstickers, and noodles (chow fun or mein). I have been coming here for years now. The food has been consistently good throughout the years. The service used to be very good, but recently I have noticed it's just okay. I see servers with their AirPods in watching videos or calling people, not really checking in. I had to call the server over each time if I wanted to order something which is not how it usually goes at other places. The owner or manager is very nice. Pretty average. I came here for lunch and had the Szechuan beef. It was deep-fried, but it wasn't crispy. The sauce was OK, but it was overly salty. The wonton soup was incredibly salty as well. I hadn't been here in many years. We ordered Broccoli Beef and General Chow's Chicken. Both dishes were served to us very quickly and they were piping hot. I didn't realize that the chicken came with broccoli also so we had a large amount of broccoli. Fortunately, the broccoli was perfectly cooked (hot but crisp). Hot day, don't feel like cooking . . . YU SHANG!! Had a lot of food ordered, so stay with us as we work through it all! First, the soups - ordered: a Seaweed Egg Flower soup, and a Wonton (not Wor wonton) soup - large servings for only $9.95 Enough for 3 large bowls each. For the main dishes, ordered: an Eggplant Garlic with extra sauce on the side, Beef Chow Mein, Combination Fried Rice, and Mushu Chicken. All the items arrived home after a 15 minute drive still VERY hot! Especially the soups - oy! But hot soups on a hot day was perfect. The soups were both very delicious. The Seaweed Egg Flower is a favorite, and the Wonton soup was tasty as well, and had loads of vegetables in it - not just the dumplings. Almost a meal in and of itself. The Eggplant Garlic also had lots of "extra" vegetables. I have had the Eggplant Garlic from another favorite restaurant (shhhh . . . ) and theirs is just eggplant - I kind of like the extra vegetables more, adds extra taste and texture. Served over rice, the sauce was enough but I like it extra moist so I asked for extra sauce on the side. I learned to get extra "just in case" as I have had orders from here with not much sauce, at least not enough for serving over rice. And speaking of rice, ordered a side of Jasmine rice and was informed that the Eggplant came with rice (we still ordered a side of rice) but only one rice was in bags, so double check if ordering for takeout. Still, get extra sauce - better safe than sorry - and the sauce does not go to waste! The Combination Fried rice and Beef Chow Mein are very good, not greasy and nice light flavors. And lots of meat in both, with the Combination having chicken, pork and shrimp. Finally, the queen of the ball was the Mushu Chicken. They also have a pork Mushu, but we like to mix it up a bit. May not be on the menu you look at, but ask for it specifically. Lots of flavor, lots of filling and tasty sauce to roll up in the accompanying pancakes. So good! It is hard sometimes to decide which place we like best for Chinese food. However, we have never been disappointed here and the variety of menu items will keep us content for a long time. Although they also offer sushi, we have never even tried any from here yet, as we are still working through the menu and our favorites. My family and I have been coming to Yu Shang for 20+ years. The main staff are amazing. know us by name, and as we almost always get the same thing, remember our orders. Though are great with recommendations if we do want to try anything new. The restaurant itself has definitely seen better days, but it never feels like you have to rush when there. You catch up with the staff and enjoy a nice meal. Though it is a bit on the more expensive side, we think it's worth it. We go for special occasions or just when we miss the food. We usually get the mixed tempura, sizzling rice soup, curry chicken with mushrooms and broccoli, oyster sauce beef with mixed vegetables and a sizzling shrimp and mixed vegetables plate. 10% of the time, they might be inconsistent but not usually when dining in. Don't let the look or location of this place fool you! The food here is excellent and the staff are so friendly! We ordered food from year a couple of years ago and hardly a month (or week) goes by that we aren't ordering from them! I came here first for the Chinese food. (And to be honest some dishes here really shine (Special Braised Chicken Wings are my absolute favorite!) and some dishes fall flat. But the really good dishes definitely make up for the misses. But what really sets this place apart is actually the sushi! Yes, that's right... the sushi! I'm generally very skeptical of Chinese restaurants that try to do sushi. They've typically disappointed in the past and are usually barely a grade above grocery store sushi. But after finally taking the plunge and trying their sushi, there's no reason to go anywhere else! I'm surprised I haven't wrote a review for this restaurant in Marin. This place satisfies our craving for Chinese & Japanese food and for those who remember they used to also serve Vietnamese pho. Yu Shang has been around since 1980. I get why people say they're not authentic, but it's way more authentic than Panda Express lol. Friendly staff, food is always plentiful and there's ample street parking or in the back lot. Great lunch specials and family dinner options. They would make a killing if they would do deliveries. MANDARIN FUSION: Yu Shang manages to do Mandarin and Japanese cuisine in one space and it actually works! We have been here a couple of times for lunch and I have had the Cucumber Salad with crab ( very delicious). I have also had the Dragon Roll and Cashew chicken all on separate occasions. All have been delicious. I have been seated almost always immediately and service is always prompt and courteous. They even have a sushi bar where you can eat while watching the chef. Prices are reasonable and there is a parking lot serving the area. Give them a try next time you are in San Rafael. read more

YS is still our to go place for sushi it not one of this hipster places where everything is shiny, but it's food is on point. And with us being a non sushi eater and one sushi eater there is not only the typical chicken teriyaki that most of the time is the only non sushi item on the menu. No you have a full Mandarin Chinese menu. And believe me both sides are extremely good. If you ask for it they skip the msgs on the Chinese dishes as well. So if you love sushi.
