I am so sad that their quality of food has declined as it has. The beef is always so tough now, the pork can be very fatty and also tough, and dishes are inconsistent. I mean, it actually creeped me out a couple times how bad the meat was (like, what did that poor cow go through?). I really want to support my neighborhood businesses and I love the super hard-working owner and staff, but cutting costs by getting such bad meat will only cause you to lose customers! Summary: giant portion, average taste. We got beef fried rice and Singapore noodles. Rice was rather dry, dull and boring, I wish it had more flavours. But it had a good amount of meat! Singapore noodles was a bit spicy and with good spices - no surprise there, just a good average Singapore one with prawns and pork. Service was fast, and the owner was nice and busy. We've been having great homemade chile and cornbread on these cold evenings, but when I looked at our leftovers there definitely were not enough for dinner. "What do you think", I asked my husband, "Shanghai Kitchen?" We both said "YES" at thesame time. My husband called in our order, three favorites; Mu Shu Pork, Singapore Style Noodles and Pork Buns (lots of filling !). My husband greeted our server with "Kung Hei Fat Choy", and when our order was handed to him, there on top was a container of warm Chinese donuts, a gift! We've enjoyed two dinners, with enough left for lunch today. We also love their Kung Pao Chicken, Wor Wonton Soup and Vegetable Delight. We are so glad these folks are almost neighbors! read more

This is honestly depressing so I'll get straight to the point. Fried rice was overcooked and gummy, the chow mein was decent but the noodles were over cooked as well. The orange chicken was so tough my 9 year old son couldn't eat it. The salt n pepper pork chops have an off spoiled taste and the chicken wings are soggy and unappetizing. Been ordering food from here since they took over May Lee's. I like the owner, they work hard, the portion sizes are good, but I have to be honest. I was very happy with the food until a few months ago... Unfortunately the quality of all the food has declined significantly. It's very obvious they've cut corners to save on costs, like buying their meat from cheaper distributors. Much cheaper, I'm afraid. The beef has been totally inedible the last 3-4 times, fries or otherwise; very tough and lots of gristle. The fried chicken dishes also tough, chewy and VERY dry, calamari super tough as well. Any of the fried dishes are particularly bad (tough, hard and dry). Mind you, all these used to be quite decent. Preparation and ingredients of dishes are also very inconsistent; sometimes nearly passable, other times horrible and (like I said) inedible. It's such a shame because they were quite good before. Where is the pride in this? If you're going to increase your prices, don't decrease quality on your customers so blatantly as well. So disappointing. I look forward to and hope they figure out how to serve good food again soon. Until then, I'd simply hold off. read more

The food was very good and portions for dine in was surprisingly large. We stopped in to eat before our Muir Woods reservation. The location is clean and it's a hidden gem as we saw the cafe next door originally, but are glad we changed our mind and went here. The service was quick, but it was 3 in the afternoon. The lady was very pleasant and even gave us cut chilled oranges for dessert! Our party of 5 had to get to-go containers because there was a lot to bring home... even after we ate! We do many food adventures while traveling and we're impressed with this place. The veggies were crisp, sweet, and yummy. The spicy garlic chicken was my fave, but we also had the Mongolian beef, salt & pepper ribs, beef & broccoli, and shrimp with black bean sauce --- got the chow mein, fried rice, and white rice to go with. Recommend all of these dishes as they were delicious. The hot and sour soup was also very good. And the lunch special pricing can't be beat for the quantity of food served! I get takeout from here sometimes and there is large variety of things that you can get on the menu. Today I got takeout from this place, and it still doesn't disappoint! Here is the following of what I ate for takeout here: -TOFU The Tofu here is so delicious, and I've had the best Tofu I've ever had here. It's so spicy, rich and delicious. I forgot which specific one I got, but if there is a specific name saying it's spicy or something like that then I am probably refering to that. -FRIED RICE The Fried Rice was so delicious, it had small amounts of vegetables and I almost ate all of it right away! It's crazy how a business like this doesn't have more attention. They deserve much more attention, and you should definitely try it out when you have some time! I didn't get any photos sadly, but maybe when I update this review I'll get one. Truth be told, this review leans more 3 1/2 stars than 4 stars. I ordered my meal from Shanghai Kitchen for Yelp's Big Night In. I got their Chicken Tomato Chow Mein and their Mongolian Beef. I was tempted to order their pot stickers (which I've had before), but I'm trying to avoid packing on any more Covid-19 lbs. If I'm not carefully, pretty soon I'll be walking around in a muumuu and/or expandable sweatpants. I've had food from Shanghai Kitchen before and it's always a stellar choice for Chinese takeout here in southern Marin. It's fast; it's affordable; the portions are generous. But I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed with my recent order. The chicken tomato chow mein was a little too sweet and greasy for my liking. There was certainly an abundance of tomatoes and noodles. It wasn't a bad dish. I just wish it had a little more spice or some kind of special flavorful oomph. The Mongolian Beef certainly had plenty of spice (half the dish was sliced onions), but the meat wasn't fully cooked. It definitely could've used an extra minute or two on the wok. So essentially, I was left with a giant heap of onions, spicy sauce, and uncooked, chewy meat. Like I said, I've eaten from here before and the food's been quite reliable. So I'm gonna give them a mulligan on this one. Next time, I'll avoid the beef and stick with chicken, and fried rice, and pot stickers, and some of their other staples. I'm just glad to see Shanghai Kitchen still in business and serving the community. I definitely want to see them survive and thrive! read more

I tend to worry when there's no one in a restaurant at 7pm. But we decided to brave it anyway. There were several take-out orders while we were eating there so that's a good sign. I'm so glad we stuck around. The food was quite good. To start off, they bring you a basket of brightly-colored shrimp crackers. Take my advice and ask for a side of chili paste to dip them in. I first had that combination in Bali (albeit, with a true sambal) and I've always eaten them that way since. And no, sriracha isn't the same thing. The potstickers were wonderful. Crispy and browned well with a balanced soy-vinegar dipping sauce. I think I know good potstickers because I once drove 400 miles to eat some! And I'd count these as equals. That gingery goodness and the pork with soy-vinegar is just something that makes me happy. The veggie chow mein was tasty with that expected smokiness and a decent amount of vegetables (broccoli, carrots, bok choy, mushrooms, onions). It was a good serving size for three of us to share. And I took the advice of another reviewer and ordered orange beef. It was sweet and savory and not too strong on the orange flavor. I liked it pretty well at first and then I just found myself eating more and more of it and liking it more and more. I'm looking forward to coming back to try more dishes here. read more

Now, I've been ordering lemon chicken for pretty much my entire life so let me tell you, I know good lemon chicken when I've had it! This was hands down the best lemon chicken I've had in a long time! The rice was nice and sticky and my mother ordered the salt & pepper fish which was also heavenly! We loved the staff, they were so nice and attentive. They even brought us some super sweet watermelon after our dinner!! We have ordered for years from this area favorite. My go to place for excellent Chinese food, reasonably priced. The restaurant is small, unassuming, mostly a takeout business with a few inside seats. Don't let that dissuade you. The food is always fresh and prepared to order, done quickly but properly. The sauces are nice, not thickened with too much cornstarch on the items I have ordered, though I dislike sweet and sweet and sour, so I am talking about the savory and/or spicy varieties. My newest favorite dish is the Fish Filet with Bok Choy, and I request it spicy. It's light, flavorful and absolutely delicious. The fried rices are lovely, fluffy not greasy. The Wonton soup is flavorful and I love that the wontons are packed in a separate container from the broth so they don't get soggy. The portions are generous and the staff is very pleasant, efficient and accommodating of special requests. Recently I came in right before closing, twice, with out of town guests and they were happy to prepare several dishes for us. I so appreciated that. read more

The sign on the street still says May Lee's, but it's been Shang Hai Kitchen for a while now. Menu is good sized with lots of variety. More importantly the quality of their food is great and their quantity is huge! I travel to China (not recently), where I do eat real Chinese food like chicken feet, eel and swan heads and it's all great. But ever since I was a kid my all-time favorite 'mercan Chinese food is Sweet & Sour Pork. Don't ask me why, I just love the stuff and they make it perfectly.
