smokey, charred, saucy, and scrumptious. I'm not a vegetarian, but I could happily eat that as my meal. The brûlée also felt special with a coffee profile. My husband's old-fashioned was very booze forward--I don't think he minded, but it definitely lacked subtlety. The restaurant is beautiful and the presentation is lovely. My only ring is the service. It was attentive, but it lacked warmth.

Visited for a quick lunch when my brother and sister in law were in town. We shared fish tacos, Birria tacos, crab guac, and churros. Everything was delicious but the fish tacos were my favorite. The service was really fast and the ambiance was super cute! I definitely want to come back to try more of their menu.

In DC, looking for a memorable dinner experience and chose dLeña. The ambiance is excellent! Because we did not have a reservation, we sat at the bar. I enjoyed my food more than my husband enjoyed his. My favorite thing that I had was the corn empanadas - - I would come here again and again to eat these. They were absolutely delicious plain. They were also absolutely delicious with the chimichurri sauce! I also ate the birria de hongo tacos. The birria gave it a smoky flavor. All of the flavors of the various ingredients mixed together really well, but I would still try something different if I came back here. My husband had the Wagyu beef empanadas. He loved how full they were in terms of content on the inside, but did not enjoy them enough overall that he would want to come here again.

Was told to try saddity Latin and that's what I'll do! This place is beautiful, a lovely spot to go on date night, if you will. We went for lunch and they have an express lunch menu where you receive an appetizer, main and a dessert; this, in my opinion is the best bang for your buck. Plus, they really try to get you in and out in an hour, should you have to go back to work. I got the lobster tortilla soup, Salmon Zarandeado and gelato. The soup tasted phenomenal, the salmon was cooked to perfection and the gelato (I believe it was salted caramel) wasn't too sweet. I think the presentation is beautiful and the flavors are on point; although, I would not be able to bring my partner as he would leave hungry. The service was nice; although, towards the end of the meal I felt rushed as they needed to prepare for dinner.

I went here a few years ago for brunch and was not impressed at all. I was told to try it again but for dinner. I finally went back for dinner and my husband and I were so happy we did. Dinner is amazing. He got the branzino and I got the American Waygu that came with three toppings and some blue corn tortillas. For dessert we got the espresso crème brûlée. We will definitely go back but only for dinner. I'm not sure why the brunch can't be as good as their dinner.

Came last night before a comedy show at the Capital One Arena and OMG...10/10 hands down I have no notes. We went in right as they opened, on a Friday at 5 pm, and there was already a line! The reservations were full, but we were offered a seat either at the bar or outside. Luckily it was a beautiful day so we took a seat outside. They started us off with a sweet hibiscus flavored juice as a palate cleanser which was super refreshing. The left side of the menu had appetizers and shareables, while the right side had entrees. We ordered the short rib tacos, pork belly, wagyu empanadas, and seafood enchiladas. Everything had a beautiful bright orange sauce on it and made it look like it would be spicy but it wasn't! I think it's their signature guajillo sauce and it was VERY good, super creamy. Seafood enchiladas: This was my fav. Might have been because it was extremely hungry and it was my first bite. Definitely best when eaten warm, as the cheese is gooiest and the seafood inside is hot. I wasn't sure how the salad was going to be but it added a perfect refreshing and acidity to balance out the creamy sauce. Wagyu empanadas: Much gooey-er and cheesier than expected, but also a hit! Came with a decent amount of beef inside. Comes with the orange sauce and a chimichurri, which I think was a good idea because given how cheesy and creamy the filling already was, the chimichurri was a nice balance as well. Pork belly: Melts as soon as you cut into it. The Asian in me low key wanted a giant bowl of rice with this so that I could soak up all the sauce and veggies. Pretty fatty so if you're not a fan of that you might not like this. Short rib tacos: These were loaded, not with meat but with tons of crunchy topping (maybe fried carrots?) Could have done with slightly less crunch but overall still good. The orange sauce on the bottom had a peanuty flavor which I thought added a unique kick. Also, we were surprised at how quickly the food came out. We were in and out in under an hour. Our server Rebecca was also extremely nice. Will def be back if in the area. Highly recommend all around!

Love DLeña's express lunch! Great deal for 3 courses - $28. Typically not busy and you get great food and service. We started with the queso fundido which was tasty and flavorful and the guacamole which was fresh 2nd course were fish tacos and DLeña burger. I enjoyed my burger which was seasoned impeccably. My colleague really likes her fish tacos. By the 3rd course we were stuffed but managed to take 2 bites of both desserts which were great. Highly recommend if you have never been to DLeña before or want to grab a 3 course lunch for an affordable price

Came here for brunch while on a staycation in DC. I would suggest getting a rideshare, taking the Metro, or finding a nearby parking garage because street parking is VERY limited in the area. Now, dLena was an experience. It's a Mexican restaurant that specializes in its talked about brunch. We made reservations ahead and were greeted by pleasant staff who escorted us to our table. We were presented with the menu...I thought I had to choose what I wanted to get...little did I know that the menu WAS everything we were getting To be honest, there were roughly 17 items (around 16 for us since I am not a fan of mushrooms and that was one of the dishes) with each one bringing a unique, complex, tasting experience. Some I liked, some I didn't, but there were none that I found outright unappealing. The staff were pleasant, professional, and described every item that was brought to the table, which we really appreciated. The manager came to our table due to a misunderstanding with the party next to us and was so understanding and apologized, which we really appreciated. The ambiance was busy, but chill at the same time, it was a great vibe. All in all, I WILL BE BACK to dLena!

Been here twice - first was for a happy hour, second for dinner. Both times the service has been great, the wait staff are super kind and accommodating of food allergies. Kind of a dim lights vibe with a wraparound bar and table seating, as well as a basement area with a bar and live music (you can also order food downstairs!). Very vibey, and my friend loved their mezcal drinks. We tried the corn and wagyu empanadas and both were excellent. The guacamole was also great, but I might pass on the queso next time - lovely presentation, but just isn't my thing. The salsa that came with it was incredible, though! My entree was the pescado tacos. They were excellent, though a little heavy on the sauce, in my opinion. I want to try the birria tacos if I make it to dLeña again.

I was very excited to try out D'Leñas bottomless brunch for my boyfriend's birthday trip. We were coming in from NYC and made reservations way in advance. The menu looked astounding and my bf LOVES Mexican. Firstly, the drinks were plenty to chose from. Multiple mimosa flavors. Micheladas called my attention after never seeing that on a bottomless menu. The michelada and the margarita were the best. The mimosa tasted like really cheap bubbles that almost tasted like beer. They were sitting at the bar in jugs not on ice I think maybe that would help. I would approach this brunch soooo differently had I known the way. They bring out everything on the menu. The best items in our opinion were at the beginning. The skillets at the end are huge heavy portions and the flavors get repetitive. Best things on the bottomless menu are the FRUIT COCKTAIL WOW surprised us soooo much. The fish tacos delishhhhh. The Cesar salad was yummy. All the tacos were good. The steak and eggs delicious. The chicken wand waffles was good! Overall the experience was great. They were super busy but we were treated well and the birthday surprise was so nice! Thank u for that !! My friend heard so many great things about DLeña, so she made reservations for brunch. We were about 20 mins early and decided to see if they will sit us, and they did. We were greeted by two nice ladies and they walked us to our table. Our waiter was very professional, knowledgeable and attentive. He recommended the bottomless brunch, we got to try all the items on the menu and we did bottomless drinks as well. The restaurant had upbeat music with a stylish decor. The food was ok, they were a few choices on the menu that we really liked. We will come back when it's not brunch to try the regular menu. I have been dying to go to D'Lenas for a while now. I was finally able to make a reservation for my birthday which was on a Monday night. The place was pretty lively for a Monday night. My bf had to drive around a few times to find a parking spot. The place is nicely decorated but a little too dark for my liking. I understand mood setting but it was just a tad too dark for me. There weren't any booths available and the hostess proceeded to seat us at the high top tables but right by the door. Umm no one likes to sit by the door where there's heavy foot traffic. I was told that downstairs is a lounge and I could also sit down there. It was really cute! Equally dark if not a bit darker. They had an assortment of seating, couches, ottomans. The small round tables down there entirely too small. Could barely maneuver the plates around to eat without fear that something would fall off. But enough of that. The food. We ordered the corn empanadas, amazing 10/10. there were really good, creamy on the inside, crispy on the outside, perfection. We also ordered short rib tacos, I mean I could've eaten them all night. Soooo good 10/10. Probably one of the best short rib tacos I've had. We had the Habanero Pepita Salsa (chips and salsa). They had three different types of salsa, pickled veggies, and a variety of chips including plantain chips. 10/10. For our main course, I ordered the Branzino. I did not like that the sides the fish came with. The sides were cole slaw and a charred avocado. Although the cole slaw was not as creamy as traditional cole slow but light and fresh, I felt like the fish could've been paired with maybe some rice or something. The Branzino was good but I felt like it was missing something. They do provide a really nice sized portion which was good cause I almost went to the Wagyu steak and decided that it wouldn't fill me up. So the Branzino 8/10. My bf ordered the chicken which was amazing, a bit small of a portion but perfectly seasoned, nice char, with a side of broccolini 10/10. Overall, I had a good first time experience. The customer service was average. Again the place is nice but I wasn't feeling how dark it was in there. But I'll be back! read more

My group of 5 went for Sunday brunch, AYCE. It was our second time here and our second time impressed! The food was amazing and our server Merlyn made it a great time. Our favorites were the birria tacos, street corn, and churros. Highly recommend making reservations well in advance, as it's a pretty popular place. If you didn't, give them a call and see if you can walk in. You might also be able to sit at the bar, which is a great spot as it's curved, which makes it easier to chat with your group. read more

Server was terrible didn't pay attention didn't explain the menu. Forgot drinks had to keep asking her. Worse service I ever had at an upscale restaurant. Manager Matt was awesome but I wish he can teach the staff how to deliver good service like him. Plus it was my birthday server thought it was my friend birthday. Literally had to beg for a complimentary bday desert. Server asked us if we had any food allergy not explaining the reason why. OMG!!! I've been to DLena a few times but tonight was special. I came with two of my girlfriends for HH just to blow off some steam and Royal and Sean took care of us like no other. We ordered the Queso Fundido (favorite!!!), Corn Empanada , and Crab Tostada . The menu didn't advertise churros but Royal and Sean surprised us with orders and they were delicious!! Came here strictly to try the vegan options. Got the dishes consisting of the carrots, the broccolini, mushroom tacos no cheese, grilled avocado, cauliflower, kale salad no cheese, and the guacamole. The chips contained shellfish so whatever they substituted it for us with (pita?) came out very burnt but the guacamole itself was good. The broccolini probably could've been cooked more to be more tender and the cauliflower didn't have much of a flavor. Favorite and by far the best was the carrot dish- never knew carrots could taste so good. Loved the cashew/tofu aioli, very good. Probably the only dish I'd return for though. read more

Came on cinco de mayo and they had the nerve to say they were all booked up with at least 10 open tables. Saying they were waiting on their waitlist. At any reasonable establishment after 30 min a reservation should be canceled and you move on to the next person. Also the bar was extremely unprofessional, at least 10 patrons at the bar hogging seats with not even a drink in front of them. Personally I believe if you aren't spending any money and there are lines of individuals behind you that you should politely ask them to close out and that they have to leave. I heard amazing things about the food here but the customer service was so terrible I doubt I will be returning read more

My wife and I had dinner for our anniversary tonight. The food, drinks, and service were exceptional. Our server, Shannon, was absolutely awesome. She had a smile on her face throughout the evening and checked back on us every few minutes to ensure our evening was going smoothly. We filled up on margaritas, guacamole, ceviche, and enchiladas and were too full for a dessert. When we asked for our check, Shannon surprised us with some wonderful churros on a plate with a lit candle and the words "Happy Anniversary" decorated on the plate and did so complimentary without us having any knowledge of it. The gesture was extremely sweet. We had a lovely evening and Shannon's service was a huge reason for it. We look forward to returning to the restaurant in the near future. I ate at DLena this past Thursday night with a group of four people. First of all, this place is BEAUTIFUL!!! Hats off to the designer. We showed up an hour early to have drinks at the bar upstairs before being seated for dinner. We had requested a booth and the hostess was able to accommodate us, even though it was quite busy. There were three major highlights to our evening: 1) Our server, Erica, who claimed she was still in training but could not have been more personable and helpful. She even went so far as to offer reserving us a table in the downstairs lounge for after dinner. 2)Everything we ordered was delicious and came very quickly! Highlights were the corn fritters, queso fundido, pork rib, tuna tacos and enchiladas. And the tequila flights were well presented and excellent as well. (Burrata could have been more flavorful to me, but perhaps it's just me. )We ordered the creme brûlée and crepes for dessert. Both were very light and well done. (They were out of the Mexican coffee drink so I was unable to order that, but certainly would have.) 3) The GORGEOUS Roja bar/lounge downstairs. It is a must for after dinner drinks. So, I'm giving DLena 4 stars and for really only one reason: I am a tequila drinker. And like most tequila drinkers I have my favorites. I was really disappointed that I was unable to actually order the same tequila I was enjoying in the upstairs bar in the downstairs Roja lounge. Our server let me know I could not order it downstairs and my choices were limited. He gave me four options for tequila. Why???? And why is there not a tequila menu listing for the restaurant anywhere??? I went to the website and it clearly states that they serve 250 mezcals/tequilas in the Roja lounge. And was it not possible to grab my favorite bottle from upstairs? I left scratching my head over this. I did, however enjoy the Painkiller cocktail I ordered instead. It was very special. But this situation with the tequila I found particularly baffling, especially since this is a bar that specifically centers around tequila. And I wasn't asking for a cheap one either, so as a bar owner I would definitely have wanted to sell that drink! I do highly recommend DLena and will be visiting again 100%. And I'm convinced it will only get better, as it did just open and I'm aware staffing for hospitality is challenging at the moment. Did I mention how amazing Erica was? ;) She's a real asset to the business. Congrats on THAT hire! read more

Excellent Cuisine and great tequila selection. It is hard to find decent Mexican food and although it's not traditional Mexican, I really do like their take on it. I'm currently at d'lena and just had to post right away. The service was SOOOO bad. I'm sitting at the bar right now, and one bartender has been slammed, so I understand that he's not really able to help me all that much. The other bartender keeps looking at me and walking away. When he finally graced me with his attention, packed with a look of disdain, I just asked for the check as well. He literally gave me the check and stood there waiting and looking for me to pay. How seriously disrespectful. On top of that, the guacamole I ordered took 25 min to come out; to put this in context, both parties to my left and right have ordered after us, and gotten their food....the couple to the left is wrapping up, and the couple on the right just got their desserts after getting their apps when we ordered. The only reason I'm leaving 2 stars is bc the food was really good, as always. read more

I rarely post reviews but I was so disappointed in dLena's rude and dismissive customer service that I felt compelled to leave a review here. Some close friends and I were meeting for dinner so I called ahead to make a reservation and was told to walk in and sign up on the waitlist for a patio table. I did that and was told the wait would be 30 minutes. I told my friend and I went to the bar to start with drinks and appetizers. After about 45 minutes, I went to the front desk to ask about our table and was told it was ready and that I would have to close out my check at the bar. I went back to the bar and - I am appalled even remembering this - had to ask at least 7 times and waited over 10 minutes to get the check so that I could go to our table outside. I asked the bartender multiple times for the check and he just kept serving other people and didn't even answer me. I asked the person busing behind the bar for the check and he didn't answer. I asked both of them multiple times if our unfinished appetizers could be taken from the bar to our table outside and there was no answer. I was so fed up that I myself - after waiting over 10 minutes just to pay the check - made two trips from the bar to the patio to carry our appetizers to our table outside because there was no response. I even went to the concierge at the front who had said our table was ready to see if they could transport our food from the bar to our table outside and she said NO. She was not even a bit apologetic. Once we got to our table outside, the service was better. But the atrocious experience at the bar -- how do you justify that I had to ask at least 7 times to the bartender standing right in front of me to get my check and kept being ignored -- and the rudeness of the person at the front check in desk when I asked if our food could be carried from the bar to our waiting patio table made the overall experience so disappointing. Overall a horrible customer service experience - by far the worst I think I have ever experienced at a restaurant. read more

I dined out here with my husband and 2 step sisters and we had the best time. We ordered the mushroom ceviche, tortilla soup, tomahawk (best we've ever had) and it was prepared at our table, corn empanadas, kale salad, wood fired oysters and guacamole with tuna. We literally sampled so many foods because it was our first time venturing out to an actual restaurant since early 2020. The restaurant is stunning, staff was so professional and the food was incredible. I cannot wait for the tequila bar in the cellar to open. The Manager mentioned that a local Spanish guitarist would play music there so lots of fun date nights and double date nights to be had. We made a reservation for this Sunday so my mom could enjoy Dlena for Mother's Day!! I hope you guys survive the pandemic and thank you for making Mt. If you want to have bottomless brunch make sure to reserve before 1:30. Made my reservation a few weeks back and was excited to enjoy the Presidents Day bottomless brunch. The website advertises brunch until 3PM so naturally I made the reservation for 2PM. The problem is the website does not explain is that they will not offer bottomless brunch if you're seated after 1:30. They conveniently do not tell you this until you've gotten dressed, driven one hour in my case, and been seated. I would understand if the kitchen closed at 1:30 and they couldn't serve the food any longer, but we were told we could still order as much as we wanted from the brunch menu until 3pm. The only difference is they wouldn't honor the $30 bottomless brunch price. It's purely to get more money out of the party since you're forced to spend the a la carte prices, which is slimy and disappointing. We spoke with the manager once we were seated to ask if we could please have the $30 brunch pp, understanding we would have only about 45 mins to order, but we were denied and forced to order a la carte. Management was apologetic in the end and took money off our bill. Appreciate the attempt but the experience was completely ruined- and could have simply been avoided had they honored the $30 bottomless brunch price from the beginning. read more

I heard so many great things about dLeña through social media, so I decided to go for dinner on a Saturday night! dLeña offers upscale Mexican fare, live music, and aesthetically pleasing decor -- it gave me Tulum (Mexico) vibes! There's reserved seating upstairs and 'first come, first seating' seating downstairs in the lounge (the lounge has a bar and is fully serviced so you can get food too). For dinner, I had the grilled half chicken, broccolini, and a side of the char grilled carrots with the Crepe cake for dessert. I just had dinner last night with good friends at dLena (my 1st time there) and what a GREAT place to blow off steam on a Friday and to celebrate the beginning of the weekend! I was truly impressed with the place on many levels - the ambience was cool, the decor was beautiful, the service was 5 star, the food was inventive and delicious! I really have nothing bad to say about dLena - AT ALL!!! We started out with 3 appetizers: guacamole de bonito, ceviche amarillo and ensalada de queso burrata. Each one was better than the other. These were a great way to start out - we shared all 3. The guacamole and ceviche in particular were standouts. They had so many different ingredients that each bite tickled a different taste bud as the food rolled around in my mouth. My dinner was the short rib al carbon and it was presented beautifully (strips of perfectly prepared beef) atop a big long rib bone surrounded by pickled veggies, salsas and other goodies. The server Liseth (goes by Liz) was one of the BEST servers ever. Very friendly, VERY knowledgeable about the menu and dishes and generally a delight to have a conversation with. I have never had Mezcal before and she explained all about it and suggested a good beginner's one to try; she was dead on. Her descriptions and opinions of the food were honest and helpful. I would come back to this place just to see her again BUT there are so many other reasons to go to dLena that she is only the icing on the cake. Go for the food, go for the great atmosphere and outstanding food and prepare yourself to be pampered and served by a true professional!!! Unqualified recommendation here! read more

I went to the downstairs bar, and the bartender, Dennis, made it worth the trip. He made a delicious Paloma with an awesome spicy rim. He also recommended the oysters, which were some of the best I've had. I love talking about tequila and mezcal, and his knowledge on agave spirits was very impressive, he taught me about a few I've never heard of. Looking across the street my eyes were drawn to the second floor, and a series of neon lights for a tarot card reader and psychic. Taking this as a sign, I crossed. That's when I found Benito's and realized that it's neon sign was out. Walk too fast and you might miss it. A narrow door aside a bay window lit from inside. It's a small place with a warm, cozy feeling. Benito's is very much a neighborhood Central American restaurant, but FYI: no alcohol. Started with guac and chips, usual fare, delicious but nothing that singled it out. I ordered the Pollo a la Plancha and it was rather good. The chicken was grilled through but not tough, it still had moisture and you could cut it. Rice, greens, etc. and the small 2oz solo of black beans, all standard fare. The corn tortillas were interesting, not your usual thin tortillas, so it took my mind a moment to consider what I was holding. It had the thickness of a pancake, maybe a sope base, and reminded me of thick, handmade tortillas when you don't have the press. Curiously, the tortillas were not the same that my friend got with his Mole Poblano, which were thin. Granted, it was a cold Tuesday evening, but in two hours only two other individuals came in to eat. Seems like they do brisk take away business. I expect on a warmer night with higher foot traffic this place fills up quickly. The service was great, did not want for anything. We were served with two containers of sauce, green and orange. Ostensibly green chili, and habanero, I did not learn specifically however. When I dine in DC I can't help but confront the blunt question: Was it worth it? Yeah, it's good food, good people, and a good place. You'll feel comfortable there and leave full. But the price of dining out is too damn high, and this meal is on the higher side of what, ten years ago, would have been $15. I fear that prices will continue to be pushed higher and places like Benito's might disappear, so get over there because the food excellent, the people are nice, and it's just a warm space to hang out for an hour or so talking to an old friend.

We also ordered a variety of grilled meats, including the two large Parrillada meat platters and picanha . The accompanying sides we tried were the fries, cheese rice, fried yucca, and plantains. I really liked the plantains, but the cheese rice was not was I expected. It was more like grits than cheesy rice. The meats were cooked to how we requested it, and of course tastes especially good with the sauces. My favorite cuts were the strip steak, beef rib, and picanha. I didn't really care for the sweet breads, but that is a personal preference. Value wise, the Parrillada platters could easily feed 4 - 5 people, so we had plenty of leftovers. Birthday person had to call them and me to smooth it all over. Then, another person called me to get my email address to send me a PDF to fill out (which I had to then send them on WhatsApp) for my order - a comically silly added bureaucratic/administrative load. Just take the credit card over the phone on the first call/request, like 99% of businesses around the world. This place takes 3-4 steps just to order something... This person had absolutely zero idea that I made the request as a surprise, so it suggests there is pretty poor coordination and communication amongst staff. I'm sure people come here regularly and have great meals and great times. But at their prices, wine/champagne mark-ups, and promise of an 'elevated' experience -- staff need to get their act together.

Good food and drinks; and if you want to be treated like you're at one of those satire restaurants where you pay them to demean/insult you, then dLeña is the place for you. My fiancé and I have been to dLeña previously, more specifically to their Roja Lounge for drinks and small plates. The drinks were so good that even our friends who were from out of town insisted we go again when they were back in town. I don't remember anything standout about the service, good or bad. When we saw that they were doing a New Year's Eve dinner with live music at their Roja Lounge, we were very excited to go with some friends. I booked the reservation, but noticed there was no ability to book the Lounge so I gave them a call to enquire about their NYE event and how seating downstairs would work. I was told that the setup would be as normal downstairs and there would be no reservations, walk-in only. I pushed a little bit on seating and the host insisted that it would be first come, first serve. I thought that was a bit odd on a night as busy as NYE, but didn't think much of it past that. On NYE we arrived a few minutes early for our reservation and our table wasn't ready, we were told we could go grab a drink at the bar upstairs or go down to their Roja Lounge. We opted for the lounge to give our friends an idea where we'd be spending the rest of the night after dinner (the ambiance is amazing downstairs). We come downstairs to find every table/lounge area has a RESERVED placard on it. At this point, I was very confused as the person I talked to on the phone insisted that they would not be doing reservations in the lounge, so when we went upstairs, I enquired with the host. She explained that the tables are only for members of their 'Tequila Locker Program', I asked why that wasn't explained to me on the phone when I enquired and eventually was told, "well you don't understand these people spend 2k every 6 months." As others have mentioned in their reviews, it seems to be a common occurrence at dLeña that insinuate that you don't belong or can't afford certain things (for context we spent over a grand on food and drinks that night (dinner was pre-paid) so that really rubbed salt into the wound). After dinner we went downstairs to the bathroom and there were still quite a few tables with reserved on them that clearly weren't occupied, this was around 11pm. While I went to the bathroom my fiancé enquired with the staff downstairs about what they would do with those tables if no one showed - they said the weren't sure. In the meantime, our friends had gone upstairs and found 2 seats at the bar, we were very excited that we finally found some seats to enjoy the rest of our night at! My girlfriend and I went to order drinks and were immediately told that she could only serve people who were sitting. At this point we were done with the constant inconveniences of this restaurant and asked for a manager. We explained the series of events to the manager and were met with again with a demeaning tone about how there are some very important people here tonight and constant name dropping of who those people were (director at IBM/Director of DC Parks & Rec), as if that had anything to do with the situation. Last time I checked, my money spends the same as the Director of DC Parks & Rec. After going back and forth, the manager went downstairs and came back up to tell us he may have something downstairs for us. We followed him downstairs to find the "space" he had for us was just that, a space in the corner of the bar with no seating. He said a table may free up and they we'll need to grab it as soon as staff took the reserved sign off. We decided at this point it was just time to leave, as we would have been in competition with the numerous other parties who also wanted somewhere to sit for the night. Again, if they had just explained that the tables would be completely booked, I would have either made plans. As you can imagine, it is impossible to get into anywhere in DC the night of NYE without a reservation. We noticed the table behind us seemed to also have the impression that they would be able to sit downstairs (or at least the potential to) and were scrambling to try and find a place to continue their night elsewhere. We also overheard multiple other parties complaining about how this was just a cash grab. While I know this review most likely won't change anything, I do hope that the team takes some time to consider the experience they are providing to their patrons. I understand that NYE is an extremely challenging day in the service industry, but whoever oversees booking decisions is making everything 10x more difficult for their staff and patrons. After reading some of the other reviews where people have had similar experiences, we will not be taking this as a one off because of NYE and won't be returning. read more

I've visited this restaurant multiple times, each with its own experience. On my first visit, we sat upstairs in the main dining area. The ambiance was intimate and inviting, with soft lighting that created a cozy atmosphere ideal for a nice dinner. On another visit, we didn't have reservations and were seated downstairs. The downstairs space had a completely different vibe--much more relaxed and open, but the seating layout felt a bit awkward, especially when trying to enjoy a larger meal. Would be perfect for drinks, music, and smaller snacks. The way some of the tables and seats were positioned together or at odd angles made it a little less comfortable for a full on dining experience. However, the live music downstairs added a vibrant energy and transformed the experience into something more lively and fun, making it enjoyable on its own. As for the food, it did not let me down. We opted for a variety of dishes to share with the table, which allowed us to sample a wide range of flavors. However, the only downfall during my first visit was that the pacing of the courses was off, which was disappointing. They served the protein by itself first, and the vegetables arrived much later, which meant we couldn't enjoy them together. The vegetables felt like an afterthought and weren't as satisfying on their own. That said, the oysters were incredible--some of the best I've ever had. They were full of flavor, perfectly prepared, and a real standout of the meal. I also visited once for lunch and unfortunately, I wouldn't return for that. The lunch menu was much more limited, and most of the restaurant's best dishes were only available during dinner. I came to dLeña for brunch with friends on a Saturday, and overall, it was a decent experience but not one I'd necessarily go out of my way to repeat. We went around 11:30, so it started off pretty quiet, but as brunch picked up, it definitely got louder. The ambiance is nice though, very laid-back, chill, and a great vibe for a group brunch or celebration. We did the bottomless brunch, and one thing I really appreciated is that the bottomless food and drinks are priced separately. Not everyone in our group wanted drinks, so it was nice that we were only charged for the people who actually ordered them. The only downside is that mocktails aren't included. The food is served as small plates brought out progressively, but I do wish this had been explained better upfront. It was presented as if they would just bring items out, but it wasn't clearly communicated that we could also order anything we wanted from the menu. That made the experience feel a bit confusing. The meal started off strong. The salad was fresh, and there was a fruit/yogurt dish with agave that was honestly one of the best things we had. From there, it became hit or miss. The ceviche and chips were good, the fish tacos were solid, and I appreciated that they had some vegetarian options (though somewhat limited). The waffle and churro were highlights, but the potato hash fell flat. As the meal went on, service slowed down quite a bit. We were waiting a while for certain items (like the corn), and it felt like things just started to lag toward the end. Service overall followed a similar pattern. Strong at the beginning, but less attentive as it got busier. Overall, I'd rate it around a 7 out of 10. It's a fun spot for the experience and group setting, but the lack of clarity and inconsistency in pacing took away from it. However, my experience at this crowded place was far from enjoyable due to the the lack of seating. Finding a spot to even stand (forget sitting) was a challenge in itself, as the seating seemed to me as if it was reserved for more special guests. Also, the atmosphere was overshadowed by the unapproachable staff. The staff appeared uninterested in providing assistance. It felt like they were going through the motions without any genuine interest. Requests for assistance were met with cold responses, and it seemed like they were doing us a favor rather than providing a service. I assume that if you don't have one of their special lockers to store tequilla in then you are going to have to stand or leave. It was disheartening to see the staff prioritize certain customers over others, creating an unwelcoming and exclusive vibe. The lack of attentiveness from the staff made it challenging to fully enjoy the music or the company of friends. The overall atmosphere in the downstairs bar was not conducive to relaxation or enjoyment, which was a significant letdown. I would like to first start by saying I never review restaurants but my experience last night made me make an exception. My wife and I ate at Dleña and had a wonderful experience. It was our anniversary and we wanted to make a night of it so we went downstairs to the speakeasy bar for a night cap. They had live music which was great and had a really cool atmosphere. But it wasn't the food or drinks (which were great) that made me write this, but the service. I have lived in DC for many years but last night was the best service We have experienced since coming to this city. Our server Nancy was incredible and had such knowledge. We first were standing because it was first come first serve and when we told her we were celebrating our anniversary she immediately found us a table . When we asked her what she liked on the menu she said it didn't matter because it wasn't about her, it was about what we like and what kind of experience we wanted to have. She had us trying mezcal (which neither my wife nor I had ever had) and then gave us old fashions with tequila and mezcal! If that wasn't enough, she even brought us a dessert that had "Happy Anniversary" written on it. I decided to spend New Year's Eve at Dleña in NW DC based on a recommendation from the Washington Post, but my experience left much to be desired. Upon entering, I was told by a staff member that I could sit anywhere in the lounge without "reserved" signs. However, every table in the lounge had reserved signs, creating confusion from the start. After finally finding a seat at the bar, the bartender, with noticeably unpleasant breath, informed me that the seat was also "reserved." This contradicted the earlier information I received about seating options upon entering. Despite these initial setbacks, I found two available seats at the bar for myself and my cousin. To our dismay, after being told to wait "one" minute to order, the bartender never took our order. Later, I observed the same bartender speaking with a manager, who then stated that one of our seats was reserved. This was the second time we were informed of reserved seating after being seated without any initial indications. Feeling unwelcome and frustrated by the inconsistency, my cousin and I decided to leave and settled at a different bar to welcome in 2024 more tastefully. Upon arrival, our waiter approached us and asked what we would like to order. We inquired about the bottomless brunch option, and he informed us that it was no longer available after 1 PM, which seemed unusual given that it was still 1.5hrs prior to closing. However, this was not the main issue and we were totally fine with ordering something else if we had access to the full menu. Before we had the opportunity to ask any follow-up questions or explore what other menu options there were, our waiter walked away promptly after stating bottomless brunch was not a option. We waited approximately 20-25 minutes for him to return, but he never did. Ultimately, we decided to leave and dine elsewhere due to the lack of service. This was a very disappointing experience in terms of customer service. Fortunately, we were able to find a great alternative nearby and still enjoy our lunch. On a positive note, the oysters were good, but the bacon jam that accompanied them was overpowering, detracting from the delicate taste of the oysters. Another aspect that detracted from the experience was having three different people check in with us while we were eating. This made the restaurant feel less relaxing and became a bit of an annoyance. Given the price point, I had expected a more memorable and flavorful experience. We recently dined at this restaurant, and overall, it was a fantastic experience. Great ambience, dimmed lights, comfortable and cozy place. The flavors and quality of the food were exceptional, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The short rib tacos were a highlight, cooked perfectly. The Guacamole was fresh and flavorful, adding a delightful touch to our dining experience. Only downside was the long waiting time. It was a bit frustrating to wait for our food, especially since we were quite hungry. However, once food arrived it was definitely worth the wait. The staff appeared a bit distracted during our visit, but they were friendly and accommodating nonetheless. It would have been even better if they were a a little more attentive to the customers needs. While the taste and quality of the dishes were excellent, portion sizes left a bit to be desired, especially considering the price. Although food was delicious, a slightly larger portion would have made the experience even more satisfying. Despite these minor issues, I highly recommend this restaurant for it's mouthwatering Mexican cuisine. read more

Really beautifully decorated restaurant that is pretty unassuming from outside. At night, it's really dark inside though and the candles don't provide much light. We came to celebrate our anniversary. Our server was so nice and funny. He was really helpful in telling us which dishes were good and which weren't. He definitely made us have an enjoyable time. Their initial "shot" of non-alcoholic mezcal was delicious. Their lemonade is also really good. We tried the guacamole (delicious), wagyu fajita (cooked perfectly and absolutely melt in the mouth--they forgot to bring us our tortillas and we didn't realize this until we saw it on the menu during dessert), short rib tacos (meh, the short rib was really dry), and the broccolini (a bit over charred and too oily). For dessert, we initially tried the chocolate fondant but it was not good at all. It should be liquid in the center but it was like a cooked sponge-y bread with not much sweetness. Our server comped us a new dessert--the crepe cake. This one was slightly better but overall just average. Their desserts are not worth it, in my opinion. read more

This is the second time I'm visiting dLeña and I loved today's experience just as much as my first visit. Photos don't do justice as this place is so beautiful! The ambiance is elegant, classy, and warm. The seating at the bar is very comfortable. Excellent service by bartenders who are polite, efficient, and professional. Of course, the food here is phenomenal! My favorites from today were Wagyu Beef Tiradito, Pork Belly, and Ceviche Amarillo. I'm not a fan of steak in general, but their 30 Day Dry Aged Boneless Ribeye puts top-tier steakhouses in the DMV area to shame. Their tacos (Short Rib, Atún, and Camaróne) are perfection. Overall, there is no restaurant that can compete with dLeña currently in DC - a class act all around. If you are looking for a romantic date spot, bring your beau here! If your friends are visiting from out of town to experience DC, bring them here! No matter who you bring as your company, it will be a lovely evening filled with fabulous drinks, great food, vibrant live music, and muchas risas! read more

I had the pleasure of dining at dLeña for dinner the other night and I must say, it was an experience unlike any other. The atmosphere was very inviting and the staff was welcoming and friendly. The food was absolutely delicious, with a mix of flavors that you would rarely find at a Mexican restaurant. The portions were generous and the prices were pricey but very reasonable. We started with the Tuna Tartare Guacamole - the guac was fresh, creamy, and flavorful. The chips were crispy and perfectly salted. For the main course, I had the Short Rib al Carbon; it was cooked to perfection and melted in my mouth. The unique combination of flavors and spices was something that I had never tasted before. The accompanying sides were also delicious, particularly the roasted veggies, which were light and fresh. Overall, my experience at dLeña was one of the best I have ever had. My friend and I had a disappointing experience at dlena in Washington DC. The restaurant was very loud, which made it difficult to enjoy our conversation. Our waitress was rude from the start, which set a negative tone for the evening. While the tuna guacamole and ceviche appetizers were good, the drinks left much to be desired. My friend disliked his drink, and no one asked if he'd like a replacement. I ordered my steak rare, but it came out well done. When I sent it back, the staff was obstinate and returned a steak that was too rare. No manager visited our table, and no compensation was offered for the mistake. The waitress's comment that "no female had ever ordered a rare steak" there before and questioning if my upbringing influenced my taste was incredibly unprofessional and offensive. Overall, dlena might be decent for appetizers, but I wouldn't recommend it given the price. The steak, even if cooked properly, didn't feel worth $63. read more

While we didn't opt for the beloved classic brunch, our dinner of appetizers was both light and flavorful. We were seated promptly and decided to kick things off with sweet mango margaritas. For our meal, the Maryland crab guacamole stood out with generous crab portions and a delicious twist - crispy bread instead of chips. The burrata salad featured refreshing grilled watermelon, creamy burrata, and flavorful heirloom tomatoes. As a delightful conclusion, the rich cheesecake paired wonderfully with a scoop of ice cream on top. The presentations were visually stunning, and we enjoyed it all from their sunny, covered patio.
