Going to the DMV is like being loaded up with homework before the weekend. You know you need to do it, but you'll spend every waking minute avoiding it until it's all of a sudden Sunday night and you're forced into it. Luckily, the Grandview DMV is like having your parents step in and help you through it. I've had less than ideal experiences here, specifically when I had to move from Kansas to Missouri. The amount of oddly specific documentation I needed was on par for Pentagon clearance, and the staff member seemed to take some joy in the fact that I was one doc shy of approval. However if you're on top of it, it's not so bad. They do it all here, from registrations, property taxes, licensing, and whatever other beige tasks stand before you. The past few times, it's been licensing and I'm here to offer some pro-tips to make it easy for anyone who comes across this: - PAY ANNUAL REGISTRATION ONLINE: First off, if you're a MO resident, you get those annual car registration bills in the mail. Bite the bullet and pay for 2 years, online, the minute you get it. This will save you a trip from even having to come here. -GET IN LINE BEFORE: No matter what you're knocking out, take a look at their website (https://www.grandview.org/government/city-departments/finance/state-licensing-office) and/or download QLess. Both offer the ability to add yourself to the line digitally without leaving the house, saving hours. -REAL ID: Missouri is requiring Real ID in 2023 for flying (or use of a passport) so if you're renewing your driver's license, definitely come prepared to get this so you're not having to go back. I showed a birth certificate (ordered mine through a company called Vital Chek and it only took a week to arrive), govt check, social security card, two pieces of mail, and a current driver's license. There are other things that will work, like a non-expired passport, etc. but triple check their website before you leave the house so it's not a wasted day. -COVID: As of writing this, Covid is still a (big) thing, but they're open like normal. The area is large*, there's a temp check on the way in (no one was using it, however), and masks are required throughout. *Large until you get to the driver's license station, where everyone was crammed in like sardines. -NEW MO RESIDENTS: If you're a new MO resident, you need to do car registration THEN licensing, in order. Add yourself to the licensing queue while you're handling the first task so you don't spend the full day there. -WHEN TO GO: Common wisdom is middle of the week, middle of the month. Deadlines are often monthly, so they get more packed at the end of the month especially, or after holidays. I failed to add myself to the list, and it took four hours to get my license renewal, but had I known, it would've been easy-peasy. The plus side to all of this is their text communications and ability to track your spot in line via the app. I ended up working from my car and listening to podcasts, so it wasn't all bad. You could even go home and come back, no need to sit around all day if the waits are long. All in all, the ample parking, friendly-ish staff (most of the time), good signage throughout so it's clear where to go, and surprisingly easy jaunt to get there (less than 20 minutes from the Plaza) make this one head and shoulders better than downtown KC or others in more dense, urban areas. read more

I'd like to add that when it was close to closing he would face away from the people sitting and call out names rather than numbers and he'd say it quietly. It's the DMV, so it's really hard to write a stellar review, but my experience here was OK. It's better than the Harrisonville office, that's for sure. I used the QLess app to check in for a drivers license renewal. I kept texting for updates, which I received. When it said an estimated 12 minute wait time, I headed to the building to find a whole bunch of people standing outside of an enclosed tent covering the entrance of the building. It was clear everyone was confused if they were supposed to enter the tent or stand outside, as there was not any signage. About 5 minutes after I arrived, a lady came over a PA system and announced your name had to be called to enter the building which provided some direction. She did say no more driver license renewals would occur if you were not already in queue due to lack of staff. I entered the tent to ask a question because her directions and the QLess app contradicted. She brushed off my question, which was frustrating, but I did see her tablet and I had a place in line. About 40 mins later I was called into the building, had my temperate taken and told to go take a seat in the drivers license line. It was about another 40 minutes before it was my turn. The lady working the window was quick and efficient. I'm sure under non-COVID circumstances things move smoother, but I'll probably stick with the Belton office as they always tend to be the friendliest and quickest (even though they don't offer appointments or check ins), read more

For Grandview Being able to go on-line to set up an appointment (Q-less) can not be beat. The drivers license line is the longest, so I was able to "get in line" there and when I got to the DMV, I checked in for the car license line. The building is easy to find on the south side of Main Street. Parking is free, in a big lot. read more

Just avoid this location at all cost. I came to the Grandview location 6 times. I recently moved to MO and the hassle to get new plates is ridiculous. The employees are rude and would rather waste your time than help you. It's a shame I have to wait in line for 5 hours just to be told I'm missing a property form and need to be in another line, oh but wait that side of the DMV Is closing in 10 mins. As soon as I walked into the waiting room all 3 employees got up from the window to avoid dealing with another customer. "We're closed! We're closed!" Is what she yelled as she grabbed her belongs and walked away. It was 4:55 on Friday 08/21/20. Customer service training and management change is needed. Kindness goes a long way and it seems this place has none. ALSO they don't have numbers anymore. You have to go online to "get in line". I had all of the necessary paperwork and waited patiently in the line. I needed a pen to finish putting my address on the back of my title. As I was writing the employee, who said that she was the manager, that I should have done that when I brought the car and she refused to complete the process. She also said that I needed to go back to the seller and get a "notorized signature" from the seller, because someone could have sold me another person car without the person's knowledge. I was puzzled and frustrated because I knew that this employee was just being difficult for no reason. Eventually, she took my car title and wrote "open title" at the top back corner, which meant that no one could process my paperwork until I found the seller to complete, sign and notorize a completely different document. If I could not get that done, she told me to take them to court. Yes, what she did was absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary. She was also rude, insensitive and told me to take my car title to a different DMV office in Missouri, because, she wasn't going to allow it to be done at the DMV in Grandview Missouri. I was in disbelief and asked her, "Why are you doing this?" "Why did you create another barrier to the process?" "Why did you write on the title?" The DMV office was closing and she didn't want to resolve the problem that she created. I asked to speak to the manager, and she said, "I am the manager." Another woman that I had been waiting in line with, had written in her address as she sat there, and was able to get her tag right then. She went back up to the window with me to show that it had been done for her. The manager gave me another bogus excuse, threatened to undo the other woman's transaction, and still refused to process my paperwork. I did my very best to stay calm, but eventually, I broke down and cried." I knew the manager was being rude and prejudice. I was outdone and yelled loudly, "Why did you do this?" "Why did you write on the top of my title, knowing that the title could not be altered?". I became extremely emotional, offered a couple of "f" bombs, and allowed two people to comfort me as I left the window. As I explained to the employee/manager, life is too hard and people are in a lot of pain due to unfortunate events like Covid-19, etc. And the last thing a person needs is an unnecessary problem. She was still stoic looking, unmoved, lacked compassion, showed no empathy, and arrongant. My visit to the DMV office in Grandview, Missouri was by far the worse customer service experiences I have ever encountered. I will be speaking with someone else in authority on today. read more

I have to say although they do not take appointments I am very satisfied with this location. We recently moved from KS and needed new licenses and car tags. I arrived and the lines were outside, split into one for Motor Vehicle and one for Licenses. I chose Motor Vehicle hoping I could skip the line afterward and get my license. Not the case but hey I get it. It was hot and nasty out but they provided chairs, although that took a bit so I recommend bringing one. They had four people doing Motor Vehicle so that took maybe half an hour total. Due to Real ID they can only have one machine for licenses and that took two hours. They do as much as they can while you are in line so it is fast. They also verify you have what you need so you do not want for hours to find out you don't. They are so helpful and most important so kind. They dealt with some not nice people and just kept going. My only complaint is I got home and realized I got a regular license and not Real ID. I chalk it up to COVID and a busy Monday. Upsetting but I have a passport so I will move on and go in six years. read more

I went in to get a waiver and it took me 25 mins standing at the window while they type on their little computer..It doesn't take that long to print out a piece of paper... I went to this location on 12/3/2020 and I will never go back. I logged in to their queue and was told 24 minutes wait time. I waited over an hour and a half and then a rude employee comes out and tells us that their systems are not working and that we have to come back tomorrow. I said that is unacceptable people take off work to take care of this and your making them stand in lines (in the cold) with misleading information. She then tells us its a problem state wide no DMV is able to help. I ask what is the state saying. No response. I decided to go to the Raytown location (63rd st and blue ridge) and walk in wait 2 minutes and get my new tags. They lied to me at Grandview (system is down statewide). read more

What can I say? It's the DMV. I actually had to come here twice to get my Missouri license, then my plates. The license was very quick. I was in and out of there in 20 minutes. After this, I thought, "WOW what a GREAT DMV!" There was a document I needed to get before applying for plates, so I decided to come back. My plates took MUCH longer. Apparently in Missouri, you have to get an MO car inspection before plates are approved. I waited in line and went through 20 minutes of paperwork and the lady said, "oops, should've asked you that first!" To her credit, it was her first day. So I left, got my inspection, and came back. Got the rest done relatively quickly. Some staff were friendlier than others, but noone was unpleasant. If you are reading this review because you have a choice of DMVs, this probably isn't the worst choice ;) read more

If you don't want a wait, visit this location! I walked in, started to take a number, and was offered assistance from a window. No wait at all. As I was being helped along with a couple other people, maybe three more came in and had to wait for those of us already being helped to complete our business. Not lines like downtown KCMO and hours wait. Service is great too. I had some issues with getting my tags transferred thanks to the horrible dealer. The lady helping me really went the extra mile to keep me from having to return and also called the dealership herself to help me get my tags. My only complaint is all of the crazy documentation needed to get tags. It really shouldn't be that difficult, especially in the modern era when all the infomration could easily be updated in a program by all neccesary aprties. read more

AWFUL!!!!! I called ahead just go double check I had all my paper work with me. I asked several times if they would accept my temporary drivers license from KS bc I did not have a hard copy and would not be receiving one. They said they would accept it. Soooo I drove 20 minutes waited another twenty minutes and here's the shocker... THEY WOULD NOT ACCEPT MY TEMP LICENSE. Shelby was very pleasant, patient & helpful. She took the initiative to locate my personal property tax info since that portion of the office wasn't operating due to computer problems. She also clearly explained their process for me. I'm amazed at how pleasant Shelby was, considering she is faced with so many impatient faces glaring at her all day. So I know no one likes going to the DMV. There is always crap you forget and have to leave to get but keeping that in mind this is still by far the best DMV I have been to. The clerks are nice, quick, and helpful willing to help fill out Bills of sale, looking up taxes when you forget them, or looking up insurance 'if they can find it that is' I know it may not seam like much, but it actually isn't there job to do those things for us and I haven't been to any other DMV who is willing to look up my taxes or insurance for me. So this is by far the best DMV! Even if you do wind up having to wait a while its still never as long a wait as it is at the other DMV's so if you have a choice, the Grandview DMV is the best place to go. Just an FYI when the clerk sends you away for something which will most likely happen at any DMV, keep in mind before being 'that person' its not the clerks fault that you didn't have all you needed in the first place. Reported 3-hour wait on a Tuesday morning. 45 minutes later, only 3 people had been helped. I stuck my head in to take a look around (been waiting in the lobby due to limited seating) and there was only one employee at the two windows, and I'd gone from #17 to #14, that's it.
