Nobody I know ever looks forward to going to the DMV License Office. i know that I don't. But I have seen vast improvements in ours over recent years. Yes, I have horror stories from as far back as the mid 1960s and as recent as the 2000s. And yes, I have also learned to schedule my visits away from the beginning or ending of the month, and steer clear of Fridays. Coming early also seems to help. I think that checking both notices I receive in the mail and the DOR website for required documents has been a good idea. That all said, now that the COVID hysteria is winding down, so have wait times and the time spent with the staff. Available parking has improved over earlier locations. I do know that my current experiences are much better than ones I have had in the last couple of states I have lived in. In fact, this has been the only one where I did not have to explain the BMW also makes motorcycles! read more

this is for the independence courthouse where we are trying to get a tax waiver before we could license a car one of the worst experiences I've ever had, when we got there at 7:30 in the morning they were already 100 people waiting outside in a line, it took five hours before we got up to the counter to get our waiver in contrast when we drove to the license bureau it only took 15 minutes to get our plates. when we asked if we could get this online they said they were a month behind. Why won't the county hire more people to handle the online this is ridiculous and this is the only place that you could get your tax waiver shame on the county. read more

Signs on the wall telling you documents you need for various processes would be helpful or maybe put these on a slide show for the blank monitors on the wall. This is by far the worst DMV experience I've ever had. There are 2 people working. One of them continues stepping away to make personal phone calls and send text messages. The other is INCREDIBLY RUDE. She continues to yell at customers, roll her eyes and make snotty comments to the one other person working. When I sat down, each line was over 30 people behind. I've had to go to any DMV often enough over my lifetime to know to call in first to verify which documents I need to bring with me for whatever I'm doing. I did this yesterday before I left my house, bringing the documents I was told I needed. When I got there, it was so full there were no seats left. It a problem for me; I'm young and healthy and can stand. But it bothered me to see several older people standing while young able-bodied people sat. But I digress. After getting my number, which isn't clear that that's what you need to do, I waited 1.5 hours to be called to the counter, where the manager who helped me immediately told me I needed a birth certificate or passport. I was not told to bring either of those documents on the phone. I called again and got the same sweet lady who profusely apologized for misinforming me. She walked down to the lady who turned me away and verified that I do, in fact, need another document. She said it changes so much that she didn't know I needed it. I'm not mad at the sweet old lady who misinformed me. I'm mad at the process. Half the time I go I'm told to bring the wrong list(not enough) documents and get turned away to have to come back again after spending half a day waiting in line. It's hard enough for ME to find a day to do this. I know it's harder for others who can't get out of work or away from other responsibilities to get there. This place is so unorganized and inefficient. read more

So I would like to request that the DMV for Missouri keep the appointment process. This is s convenient, efficient, time management and it WORKS! I can tell you how happy I am about this process. I am aware that everyone does not use the internet and that this may be challenging for some people. To assist with those who do not want to use this process utilize 2 days of the week for the traditional process of renewing your tags, getting your license and all the other task. COVID-19 has not been good for anyone but it has allowed people to think outside of the box and this strategy is EXCELLENT! I am only giving this review based on the appointment experience only. The old lady at the door that is directing people to come in is rude AF!! First off nobody even know she works here and she got mad because someone was trying to let someone know there were more squares to stand on inside of the building. When I came there was no one telling people when to come inside. You just had to figure it out or a person that just finished their transaction told the people outside there were more space available. i went there at about 7:40 AM to go and get new tags for my new car that i just bought a couple days ago, it took them about 40 minutes to even call me inside and then another 15-20 minutes to even help me. they had everyone wait outside in their cars and call us in when ready. the employees were not very friendly, as the lady who checked everyone in was snapping at people. also the place was not very clean, and the lady who helped me wasn't very kind, either. she sent me home telling me i was missing documents, this is like my only day i'm available to get my new car tagged. i think next time i'll just go to sugar creek license office. read more

I would give ZERO STARS if I could. The manager is absolutely ridiculously RUDE! She shouldn't even be able to manage her household let alone a DMV. She not only raises her voice but then talks about you loudly to the next people she's helping after she treats you like crap. Worst place to go. Went today to get new drivers license, waited 2 hours to be told that I needed a utility bill in my name. Well all those are in spouses name that I had. Drove to a different license office with same paperwork and had no trouble except had to wait in a long line again. I will never enter the independence office again! read more

My husband just wasted his afternoon sitting and waiting after being assured that the documentation he brought for the Real ID was correct. After wasting his time in this run down hole full of incompetence he was informed that they "no longer accept" one of the items brought for proof of identity (it was a bill btw with our address and his name clearly printed on it). It's bad enough people have to dedicate a day to getting five minutes of work done through the DMV. This location can't even get its act together. read more

Everyone hates going to the DMV, including me. I went here to renew my tags. Out of three (then eventually four) only one person on the Vehicle side was doing renewals; the rest were new registration/plates. It took about an hour and a half to get done. Once up there, it was quick and easy. It sucks they got rid of Q Less though, I could have gotten in line while I was at city hall. read more

The DMV at Independence is the WORST! I went there on 4/08/2020 by appt. and was treated with so much disrespect by Chris, manager and Trevor, employee that I UNFORTUNATELY was put in a position to question if their behavior towards myself and friend was motivated by racism. My experience was so DEVASTATING and HORRIBLE that I am pursuing filing a complaint, ASAP! WHY this location is allowed to remain open with all the negative complaints against them and only a 2 star rating, is beyond me. That was my first visit at that location, of which I had no other choice being they are the only DMV open due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. And based on how I was treated, it will DEFINITELY be my last. Also, based on me and my friend's personal experiences, if you want to be treated "equally" and respected by management regardless of your skin color, GO TO ANOTHER DMV!! read more

The website was not allowing scheduled license renewals, so my wife stood in one of the two lines that had formed outside at approximately 9:15 a.m. After an hour of "turning" herself to avoid prolonged sun exposure, she began to feel light-headed and sat down on the sidewalk. When fellow bystanders noticed her not feeling good, one gave her a large bottle of water and another a peppermint candy (she had her breakfast come up and had to swallow it). These nice souls fanned her to keep her temp down until the line advanced enough to get her indoors. Once inside, she sat on the floor to hold her place in line. When she got to the service window, she was told that she did not need her marriage license (she brought this to prove that she was married to me because I had to write a note stating that she lived at OUR house.) She had no utility bills in her name because I opened the accounts. She had her birth certificate and her Social Security card, but even these were not enough to get a Real ID because she lacked another proof of identification (e.g., medical bill, etc.). She finished the process at 12:15 p.m. I am very disturbed by all of this. Some definite changes need to be made to this private business, especially since it is an obligatory service required by the State. I'm a firm believer that if you are going to point out a problem, you also need to suggest a solution: 1) Mount some awnings outside the front of your building to provide some shade. It's cruel not to, if your customers must stand outside. 2) Have some seating for the elderly, expectant, and disabled OUTSIDE. 3) Provide seating INSIDE for the same (never-mind "social distancing;" use some common sense). 4) Have a public bathroom accessible for emergencies such as commented above. 5) Find a way to better communicate to customers what they are required to have in their possession when they show up. From reading other reviews, it seems like this should be a priority. I hope this review helps someone. read more

This license office always has at least 5 motor windows open but only 2 drivers windows open when I come in. There are always more people waiting for a license than there are for Motor Vehicle services. Avoid this location at all costs. read more
