South Austin Marine - REGAL 42 FLY

    South Austin Marine

    (7 reviews)

Fact: Purchased a 2019 Bennington from South Austin Marine (www.southaustinmarine.com) in Austin…read moreTexas. This boat was delivered as new in January 2020. I was sold on the reliability of the Bennington brand and the "customer commitment" that South Austin Marine "sells" to their potential customers. See South Austin Marine's customer commitment link on their website. Quality & Workmanship Facts: Upon Delivery: The interior lights were not working and required wiring repair. The bilge pump was not working and needed repair. The matt lining under the helm seat was prematurely wearing out with little to no traffic. South Austin Marine promised to replace this quality flaw under warranty but that never happened. Other than no replacement matt, these other two repairs were made during the first warranty maintenance by South Austin Marine that cost me in excess of $400.00 for the first maintenance cycle. Issues as of 70 engine running hours in June 2020 The Garmin Depth Finder had started showing signs of moisture leakage under the display. Now the unit works intermittent, of course not when you really need it. About the same time, the faux wood (plastic) panel on right side of dash panel fell in my son's lap the other day while driving the boat. The panel's insert screws were poorly installed and failed mechanically. We have glued that back in place but one can tell the glue will not hold in place for long. Then, we were out on the boat another time, and noticed both the swivel and front-back setting mechanisms on the captain's chair were broke. In fact, when I talked to the Bennington "Co-Founder", he was already aware of this quality issue. Yet, they continue to ship this to customers. Now, when you take off or stop, the seat flies backwards or forwards freely. Last time out on the boat, the rear port side sheet metal on underside of rear (stern) decking came completely unfastened (roughly 6ea light duty aluminium screws missing). To eliminate further damage to the sheet metal, I went ahead and bought replacement stainless steel screws to secure the panel. In doing so, it was recognized that all screw holes had been tapped crooked, .....all in different directions making the repair more difficult. In summary, every time, .....every time my family takes the boat out, another part of subcomponent falls off the boat. Service and Repair Effort Facts: No successful repairs or replacement efforts by South Austin Marine have been confirmed nor communicated, other than empty promises, since the first warranty service which involved $400.00 in revenue. South Austin Marine appears only to be interested in supporting revenue based service requests, not repairs that include non-revenue warranty claims. I then spoke to one of the "Co-Founders" at Bennington apparently. He was immediately defensive as to my comments on the quality of workmanship and failures I have experienced on this new Bennington product. This "Co-Founder" then made promises that the parts needed were all on order (same thing South Austin Marine personnel kept telling me for a couple months now for some parts). Guess what???? The "Co-Founder" did not do what he said he was going to do either. Neither organization has shown good faith in proper warranty services and repairs. Going Forward Facts: Yes, I'm going to write the BBB about both organizations. This is poor business practice at best. No quality assurances or efforts have been made to the customer after the sale of the boat, as promised on both vendor's websites (unless revenue is imminent). Pathetic "Bennington" customer experience.

I would not go back there for air in my tires, much less boat repair…read more The highest charges in Tx., and still don't have my boat running. They tried to charge for service I did not ok, and $360 later, my boat still does't run. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else!

Outbound Sailing - What a beautiful experience this was!

My hubby and I have been yearning for the sailing life for literal years now, and we decided that…read morethis summer was the perfect time to start making that dream a reality by taking the first sailing course, ASA 101! Our initial thought was to find a sailing school in Kemah, but I wondered if there was one closer to us, and, sure enough, there is! Enter Outbound Sailing on Lake Travis. We scheduled our class right away online, and the manager, Sean, confirmed with us almost immediately. Both he and Tim, the business owner, were absolute pleasures to work with! When the day finally came for Day 1 of our ASA 101 course, we headed over to Lakeway to meet our instructor, Spencer, at the dock, and, y'all, he is seriously the most open, sweet, encouraging, and engaging person ever, and that's not hyperbole! I was extremely nervous about the whole thing, but he immediately made me feel INCREDIBLY at ease, and, we got straight to work! From beginning to end, hubby and I knew that Spencer had our backs, from the dock talks to the rigging talks to the knot talks to the hours of beautiful practice sailing. He made all of that hard work feel like pure fun! Make no mistake, though, y'all! It IS hard work, and you need to know that going in! It's an actual class, so don't expect mimosas and charcuterie boards as you sail! LOL! You need to Really. Want. To. Learn. How. To. Sail. We did, so we were all in! Pro tip: When they tell you to buy the official ASA book for the course and to study it PRIOR to the class, take them seriously! Study, and especially commit the Points of Sail and the sailboat, sails, and rigging parts to memory. Also, do the 4 review sections! It'll all make things a lot easier on you! There's a 100 multiple choice question official ASA exam that you take on the morning of Day 2, and, while Spencer was a GENIUS at preparing us for it, we were able to spend more time actually sailing because of how prepared we made ourselves ahead of time! After two intense and awesome days, hubby and I both ended up passing the course to become ASA 101 certified (yay!), but, most importantly, we truly had the time of our lives doing it, and we absolutely have Spencer LeGrande and Outbound Sailing to thank for that!

We just finished our ASA 101 training with Captain Scott, and he was very kind when explaining how…read morewe inadvertently made the sailboat do crazy things! LOL Captain Scott is a skilled sailor and a wonderful instructor... I'd take another class from him any time. Captain Tim, one of the owners, met with my wife and me before we decided to take the lessons. He spent all the time needed to answer all of our questions and explain the process. Lake Travis is a good place to take your sailing training, the winds come from all directions and are constantly changing. We are looking forward to further honing our sailing skills and sailing with Outbound Sailing. We highly recommend you check them out if you're thinking about learning to sail.
