I can't brag enough about Dock to Dish, which is an open fish market on the docks at the Ibis Bay Resort. For a $35 lifetime membership, you get a cookbook, some silver reusable transport bags to carry your fish purchases in, a D2D t-shirt and most importantly, discounts on fresh fish as they come directly off the boat! You are notified daily of what fish comes in, who the captain was that caught it and method of the catch (rod & reel, trap etc), and how much it is for that particular day for a whole fish, side, or filleted. The notifications come in via text message, email or both. Also included are pictures of fish cooking tips and recipes. It's fantastic! From stone crabs, to spiny lobster, to white grunt, yellowtail snapper, golden tilefish and more, every day brings new and interesting catches for you to try your culinary expertise on. Starting again during the season will also most likely be the FREE outdoor cooking classes, where Chef Paul Menta from D2D explains unique different fish, their origin and how to prepare and fillet them. A food sampling of all the culinary creations are passed around during the demonstration. Awesome! Today we are grabbing a pound of stone crab claws, for my immediate power consumption (ha!), six tails to begin our winter hoarding stock of delicious yummy goodness along with a side of black grouper for tonight's cookout. D2D is expanding to other areas across the states. I would highly recommend checking out if there is one coming to your area and join up if you are an avid fish lover like me. If you happen to visit the Keys and are staying for an extended period of time, picking up some fish from the window may be ideal for a stay at home feast, or perhaps getting a pound of those delicious stone crabs freshly plucked from the water. This place is the illusion of the "farm to table" without any of the substance. The fish is no more fresh than at Publix, perhaps less so. The last time I was in, they recommended the wahoo then brought it out to be cut. Half of it was gone and the person behind the counter said, "Yeah, we keep hacking away at this one, which led me to wonder... for how many days had they been hacking away at it? It is not cheaper (perhaps more expensive), it is not fresher or more sustainable, and if there is anyone ahead of you in line, it can take you half an hour to get served. read more
