The views were amazing from every angle and direction you looked. 2 pools and hot tubs. Indoor pool and outdoor pool. Game room. 4 different places to eat. A few bars. Beach access and activities. I would love to go back for a day and not even go to the park but just enjoy the hotel and its amenities. I do want to point out one thing that was kinda frustrating for us. The guy who checked us in told us that the pools closed at 9 but the hot tubs closed at 11. That didn't make sense to us. So we left the park early so our kids could play in the pool just to find out they're both open until 11. Both pools and both the pools and hot tubs. That caused us to take time away from the park when we didn't actually need to. The park closed at 10. It didn't make sense for the pool to close at 9. It also didn't make sense that the hot tubs which are in the same area would be open until 11 but not the pools. While we only stayed 1 day here, we spent Saturday evening-Monday afternoon at the park. Had we only been there for one day, and been given wrong information about the pool times and left the park early for the pool when we didn't need to, I would have been more frustrated. Everything else is and was amazing

Hotel Breakers - Waxing nostalgia turning to disappointing modernity…read more My wife and I have been visiting Hotel Breakers annually now for about ten years, vacationing with her parents, sister, and all of our kids. My wife and her family have been visiting since she was a child. For them the return visits continue to be largely motivated by memories and tradition. I have the benefit of a more objective look at the resort, but even they agree on the following points. Reservations / Check-In : My mother-in-law calls to reserve rooms the first available day they can be many months in advance. Every year she requests three adjoining rooms in the same location of the resort, even supplying specific room numbers as an example. Ever year the results vary. Sometimes we end up on different floors or the wrong area. One year one of the rooms wasn't reserved at all. This year we were in the requested area, two rooms adjoining and then one down the hall. I've never had anything close to this situation occur at any other resort and it continues to boggle my mind how this ask is never accomplished without incident. We were once told the reservation team was not part of the resort but either a fully siloed team off-property or maybe even a separate entity entirely. I am not sure if that is still the case but the process of reservations has been around a long time and is not as complicated as it seems to be made here. The front desk / check-in team has always seemed unprepared and without much empathy. The Pools / Splash Pad : The pools this most recent trip were the dirtiest we have ever experienced. An incredible amount of bugs and debris were in the water and the filters did not seem to be turned on our whole trip. When we asked a life guard / attendant at one of the pools she let us know it was "her first day" and was unsure of what to do. There are elements at the splash pad that I don't think have ever worked in the near-decade I have been visiting the resort. The liner of the pools is an extremely coarse material that I don't think has ever changed and I have never experienced anywhere else. The quality of maintenance and upkeep in the pool areas was summarized this trip by a food tray leaning against a trash can for the entirety of our weekend. The Rooms : Less egregious than the first two points, I don't believe I have noticed much of an upgrades to the rooms here in our years visiting. Furniture and walls displays wears and tears and everything feels clean...enough. Our patio set was pretty filthy this past visit and it was disappointing to have to clean it ourselves compared to the room rate. Speaking of room rate, the prices at this resort feel tough to justify based on the experience on the property. What you are paying for is proximity to Cedar Point and Shores, as well as the beach. The proximity is a great amenity (especially with kids) and we would find it hard to do the trip without it. Much like Cedar Point and Cedar Point Shores, everything appears to have taken a budget cut since the merger with Six Flags. I would love to see the Hotel Breakers put some emphasis on returning staff service levels to their former high levels, put money and effort into maintenance and upkeep, and justify the high room rates by offering more than just proximity to attractions. The Breakers is a historic and beautiful resort that deserves to meet the expectations of those who visit it.

SōLSTAY is a glamping retreat on a marina in Sandusky. It feels like a perfect nautical getaway…read more It's an ideal place to disconnect, reconnect with nature, and sleep in unique accommodations. When I visited for a book event (The Cozy Chapter), I found myself thinking - "Wait, is this Ohio? How amazing! Vacay vibes!" Accommodations: Lodging is definitely very unique compared to the surrounding options. Accommodations include houseboats or cottages with various tiers. Lodging accommodates anywhere from 2 to 8 people (plus pets). Both cottages and houseboats have big windows to look at the marina and surrounding nature. Houseboats seem like the most exciting option (they gently sway in water). All lodging includes shared hot tub, floating sauna, and wifi. Pricing is comparable to a hotel starting around $143 (varies based on dates and selection). Pricing and what's included are clearly stated. I think that prices are well worth it. Photos show the exact view you'd see outside your windows and interior accommodations. Interior seems very well designed and picture perfect. Some accommodations don't include shower/bathroom which are shareable onsite. Booking is available on Airbnb and on their website. Parking is available onsite. Activities: There are plenty of activities to do while vacationing. Offsite Cedar Point is minutes away. Onsite there are fishing, hiking (large property), boat tours and boating, kayaking, birding, relaxing by the fire, relaxing by the water in the Adirondack chairs, floating sauna and hot tub. No swimming is available in the marina (not deep), but there is another water location on the property. There's a store onsite where you can play board games or grab any essentials you might have forgotten. Events: I visited for an event series at SōLSTAY - The Cozy Chapter (booked via Eventbrite). It includes book discussion on particular book genre, crafts, book swap, gift, conversations about favorite reads, and community at the SōLSTAY store. The event is ticketed, opened to lodging guests and visitors. Guests can purchase tickets for the season or drop in. I loved the event! Everyone was super friendly, welcoming, social, and in sync. The organizers were so sweet and amazing, even more friendly than I would reasonably expect! They were just really good people! I also found out that they have little free library onsite for any readers who stay here. Book events should return in the colder months. While I only dropped in for an event, I already have plans to return and lodge! They have an all day retreat coming up in the fall! I can't wait to recharge at this dreamy location - lodge, retreat, and use an amazing floating sauna! I'm telling you, you have to experience this place!

Beautiful Home, But a Disturbing Lack of Professionalism and Communication…read more The home was beautifully decorated, and most rooms were clean and well maintained--except for the kitchen, which had standing dirty mop water in the sink upon arrival. The location was ideal and within walking distance to downtown, which we appreciated. Before check-in, I was told I would receive the door code by noon. Since we planned to arrive around the 4 PM check-in time, I wasn't concerned when it hadn't arrived by 2 PM. However, 30 minutes before arrival, we still hadn't received it. I reached out to Nick from Ohio Shores Vacation Rentals(through Airbnb) and finally received the code via email shortly after contacting him. Parking was another issue. The listing stated "street parking," but when we arrived, the only available street parking had clear "2-hour limit" signs. I asked Nick for clarification, and his only response was, "Street across from Shorehouse," which is exactly where we were. When I explained there were time restrictions, I received no further reply. We parked there anyway, hoping not to be ticketed. Once inside, we attempted to clear the sink by running the disposal, but it remained clogged and unusable. I contacted the agency around 4 PM on Thursday, and the woman who answered said someone would get back to me. No one did. I followed up via message on Friday--Nick read it and never replied. I messaged again Saturday morning with no response. By Sunday morning, I explained that because we were unable to use the kitchen, we had to throw out groceries and spend extra money dining out. Still no response. Finally, at 10:47 PM on Sunday--our last night--Nick replied: "Hi Jessica. We would have to call a plumber to the unit. It's a Sunday night, and you checked in during a holiday weekend. So it's not going to be fixed during your stay. I just assumed that you realized that when we were personally unable to correct it." At no point had anyone communicated that someone had been to the property. I was unaware of any attempted fixes and found his assumption dismissive. I let him know that I found the lack of communication unprofessional and told him his handling of the situation was unacceptable. In response, Nick became defensive and demanded that we vacate the property **immediately--at 11:45 PM--with our three children already asleep in bed.** He called my cell phone repeatedly and sent multiple messages telling me to leave. I had to contact Airbnb emergency services, who confirmed he could not evict us as the reservation was still active and paid through the next morning. I stayed up on the couch, scared and waiting in case law enforcement was called. On the morning of checkout, we followed standard courtesy by stripping beds and placing linens together. While doing so, I discovered a **heavily stained pillow** in the master bedroom and what appeared to be **blood stains** on the bottom bunk's mattress cover--both under clean sheets, clearly predating our stay. This experience was deeply disappointing and upsetting. The home itself was lovely, but the **unresponsiveness, disregard for our safety and comfort, and threats to forcibly evict us in the middle of the night** were shocking and unprofessional. We were unable to use the kitchen for the duration of our stay, had to throw away food, incurred unexpected dining expenses, and were left shaken by the late-night threats. I would **never rent from this company again** due to Nick's behavior and the total lack of accountability. To date, no compensation has been offered for the inconvenience, added expenses, or the distress caused to our family.
