Honestly, I still prefer Nathan's. The hot dogs are decent, and there's a good selection of toppings, but a truly good hot dog shouldn't need much added to it. They were out of fries when we visited, so we had chips instead. I don't fault them for running out of fries, but chips felt like a weak substitute. I ordered the Chicago dog, and while it was good, it wasn't anything memorable or something I'd go out of my way for. The inside is small, with an 80s vibe. There is no indoor seating and the outdoor seating is limited. That said, the service was solid. The employees were friendly and clearly hardworking. It was a very busy day with a long line, and it was handled efficiently. I'm not writing this place off entirely. It's not bad, just not especially impressive for what it is. read more

Quite literally, a fantastic option on a 'dog day afternoon', or any day you wish really. I decided to explore this quaint part of my borough on a pleasant end of summer day, looking to get the Chicago dog. Left with that, a chili cheese dog, and some vintage one of a kind vinyl records that I was NOT expecting to score at a hot dog joint. A house made serrano chili sauce was also part the meal. It wasn't too hot, and complemented the chili cheese dog well. The chili tasted really good, had a nice smoke. It was a tad bit salty for me, but overall a classic flavor with the cheese sauce. I love hot dogs. I didn't really check out the menu before going. My brother and I went a few weeks ago. It's a small place with a small menu. They have a table and picnic table outside. Being that today is National Hot Dog Day, how can I not stop in one of Brooklyn's best hot dog stands and try one of these out? I took a risk coming here, because since I live so close to Nathan's, I can go there anytime. This little stand in Windsor Terrace? Not so much. Before I "trample through the garden" with this review, I have been to Chicago - twice. I have eaten my share of Chicago style hot dogs. As a result, I do have some skin in the game when it comes to eating Chicago style hot dogs. -- I ordered three hot dogs, plus an Italian Beef sandwich, and a milkshake. The total is pretty high, but that is New York City for you. If I had gotten all of this in Chicago, I am pretty sure I would have gotten this whole feast for $10-$15 cheaper. Oh well. First thing is they offer a club card. Each hot dog you get, gets you one step closer to a free one. On the 10th hot dog, it is theirs to buy. The interior is retro, but gimmicky. I wanted to like it but it felt forced with the one Pac-Man arcade machine, all the VHS tapes, and all the late 80's to early 90's paraphernalia. Another restaurant, Ace Pizza in Williamsburg, made it feel like a welcome nostalgia trip. This is too in your face for my liking, and I lived through the 90's. Okay, how about those wieners? The food comes out pretty fast, but that is to be expected. Hot dogs if done right should take no more than 10 minutes to go from grill to table. The first two hot dogs I ordered, the Chicago style ones, are spot on authentic. Good poppyseed bun, they use Vienna Beef (that is the authentic Chicago style hot dog brand), excellent use of the vegetables, and good snap and resistance from the hot dog itself. It stands as a reasonable homage to their Windy City brethren. The next dog, the Chili Dog, is a disappointment. Too messy, and in one bite your clothes are ruined because it starts to fall apart after one bite. I love a good chili dog, but this one overdoes it. It reminds me of Pink's Hot Dogs in Los Angeles. Who is supposed to be the star? The Italian Beef, while not a hot dog, is a Chicago staple in its own right. While I enjoyed the soaked roll, and the tasty beef, the Giardiniera (hot pickled veggies), lacked. It needs more of a push to get it over the hump. It gets to the top, but then stalls out. As for the milkshake, it is creamy, fresh, and authentic. Maybe they should look to Portillo's and get that chocolate cake shake. Or not. I would weigh 500 pounds if they ever bring that here. -- The experience is fun and cute. The cashier is cute and genuine. She has good knowledge of the menu despite never being to Chicago (points lost there - just kidding). If the hot dog stand only focuses on Chicago style hot dogs, puts some duck fat fries on the menu (please...), and lowers their prices, this review could be seeing a higher rating. For now, it settles as a 4/5. However, the Chicago style hot dogs will have me back for that freebie. read more

Short answer 10 out of 10 would recommend. Now for the long response. While on vacation to NYC my girlfriend and I decided to go on the hunt for a delicious hotdog and we were not disappointed. After a bit of a search through Reddit we came across multiple locations but by luck this one was chosen. After a 45 minute subway ride and a small walk we nearly walked past the entrance of Dog Day Afternoon. We got inside and the man behind the counter was extremely nice and helpful recommending to us what he thought were their best hotdogs. A few minutes later we received them and oh my they were delicious. The Chicago hot dog tasted super fresh and full of flavor while the yellow peppers added a bit of kick to take it over the top without being over powering. The chili cheese dog as my girlfriend described "perfection". She was too busy stuffing her face to give a more detailed explanation but I believe it still covers it. I don't really seek out hot dogs, but when I do, you bet I'm getting one that looks like a cartoonish, platonic ideal of what you imagine a hot dog to be, and for that Dog Day Afternoon makes this dream a reality. Apparently New Yorkers consume more hot dogs than any other group in the country, with our version featuring steamed onions and mustard, whereas a Chicago dog takes it a step further with green relish, raw onion, yellow mustard, sliced tomato and pickled peppers, cheese sauce, a pickle spear and sport peppers. I'm likely missing some ingredients as the hot dog novice that I am but I was in awe of the versions served here at Dog Day Afternoon, opened by a couple of restaurant veterans who have the likes of Buttermilk Channel on their resumes. Though Chicago dogs are piled high with toppings, my first experience was way less unwieldy and messy than I expected it to be, and I managed to scarf mine down with little to no mess. I enjoyed the balance of sweet (from the relish) and tangy (from the pickles and sport peppers) with a nice aromatic zing from the raw onions. I could easily inhale two of these in one sitting and still feel pretty light, or leave room for one of their milkshakes, which seems like the perfect thing to complement a hot dog in the summer. I should add the disclaimer that I don't consume land animals so I got a vegan version of the hot dog, which tasted a okay to me. Order them in Chicago style, a chili dog, or Polish sausage. They also have one that's vegan. Maybe it's kind of expensive. That's the only bad thing. Chicago style is $6, chili dogs are $7, and it's $8 for the vegan hot dog. These are big though. Get whatever you want on the vegan hot dog. I got it Chicago style with the mustard and peppers. The other options weren't vegan of course so the choice is easy for this. Also they have fries. There's not a lot of room inside so many carry it out. A quick walk between the large green spaces in Brooklyn. It's on Prospect Park West between Green-Wood Cemetery and Prospect Park. The park is a nice place to go to eat this. read more

Fresh, complex and filling, 2 of these Chicago Dogs and I was in heaven. Came with a complimentary bag of chips as well, which was a nice touch. They have a few other dog options and also serve fries and milkshakes. I do wish they served beer and had a bit more of a standing area, but what can you do? Interior may be small but is wonderfully decorated with ephemera from the eponymous nearby-filmed movie, as well as other famous and largely NY-themed flicks. After watching and loving The Bear I got obsessed with having a Chicago Italian Beef sandwich so when I saw this place on Uber Eats I had to try it and it did not dissapoint. Perfectly cooked steak with hot giardeneira in a roll soaked in the au jus (its not a neat sandwich). Also have had all of the hot dogs the Chicago Dog with all the usual toppings (tomato,sport peppers,radioactive green relish,onions,mustard,celery salt) which I liked more than I thought I would as a New Yorker. The dogs have the perfect snap and are clearly made with quality ingredients. The Chili Cheese dog is great as well with nice homemade hot dog style chili (get extra napkins!) and the Polish Dog is a big Polish sausage split and filled with sauteed onions,mustard and peppers and is so good and hearty that one should fill you up. Also dont skip the fries which are crisp and delicious. They also give cool classic candies sometimes in the bagfor free like Lemonheads and Tootsie Rolls and that is just so cool. Gosh, do I love my neighborhood. Dog Day Afternoon has been such a welcome addition to this great little stretch of Prospect Park West sandwiched between Windsor Terrace and South Slope. I haven't been a huge hot dog connoisseur since my day camp days up in Rockland county (shout-out to MMCC! Whatup!) and I'd never had a Chicago style dog before. After my disappointing experiences tasting Chicago "pizza," my expectations weren't too high. BOY, was I wrong! Dog Day's Chicago style hotdog with its myriad toppings and excellent poppy seed bun is a work of art. I've also had the pleasure of trying their spicy Italian sausage and their larger hot dogs grilled outside (topped with kraut and spicy brown mustard) and those are EXCELLENT as well. Next up is the Polish or their hot Italian beef sandwich (which was featured on Seth Meyers!) which I'm sure will be similarly delicious. The shop is small but so charming with an old school video game machine, records for sale, a surprising amount of outdoor seating, and often a grill set up outside on the weekends. Even when there's a crowd, it's pleasant to wait and they're always lighting fast getting all the orders out. Everyone who works there is incredibly friendly and super funny - just check out their Instagram if you don't believe me! When I saw a hot dog place called "Dog Day Afternoon" had opened up across the street from where they shot Lumet's Dog Day Afternoon (1975, starring Al Pacino and John Cazale) I was like "damn. Why didn't I think of that?" Then I saw they decked the place out in New Hollywood stars portraits and a Pac Man machine and various vinyl records from The Faces to the Mad Max soundtrack I was like "damn. Are these guys stealing my dreams?" But of course all of that is beside the point because we're really here for the food. And Yelp, the food is good. They got a Chicago style hot dog which I'm too New York to know what that is and they politely explained. It's got a lot of stuff on it, pickles and relish and peppers and mustard. I'm normally pretty boring as far as hot dog toppings are concerned (would just buy a plain ass hot dog with ketchup and mustard) but I will admit it was good 'stuff' on that Chicago dog and therefore a solid purchase. I hear the chili dog is outstanding and will need to come back for that. Also the vegan hot dog sounds appealing, and with vegan bun advertised! Did I mention the milkshakes? Root beer floats? Yeah. This place has got it all and a photo of Harvey Keitel in Smoke too.
