They don't even cook their hot dogs all the way through, and when I bit into the Elote dog it was cold. The corn wasn't street style, it tasted like it came out of a can. I'm surprised this place is still in business, honestly. They claim it's an all beef hot dog, but it tasted more like mystery meat. Everything about it screams store bought. The buns were totally Kroger or Costco hot dog buns, nothing special. Save your money and go to Costco or Ralph's and buy the ingredients on your own. For a place with Dogs in their name I was surely disappointed that their hot dogs aren't even their best item. If you want overpriced disgusting street dogs, then this place is for you. For$7-8, you get a regurgitated dog full of trash toppings. It doesn't really matter what you get, but just looking at these dogs wasn't the most appetizing. As for the taste, oh dear. Bun tasted like stale sandpaper. Yeah, it doesn't even deserve to taste like cardboard: one bite and I was done. Hot dog was really, really weird. The flavor was off and not hot. Wieners rarely let me down. I wouldn't say that this truck necessarily let me down, but it wasn't anything really spectacular. ** All beef hot dog; cooked great and not too dry or juicy, just a normal dog. ** Bun; dry, white bread, just a bun bun. That's the basis of the Dogtown Dogs. It's obviously the toppings that they focus on. We tried the SPICY ANGELENO. I was really looking forward to this one. On the menu it said it was a bacon wrapped dog with tomatillo sauce, salsa fresca and fried jalapenos. We didn't want onions so we asked for no salsa fresca... well, we got just a dog topped with jalapenos. Dry and unappealing looking. No bacon, no sauce. We added mustard that we happened to have in our office and that helped. It wasn't bad, but a bit disappointing. If I try it again, I'll speak more clearly and hope to get something more tasty. We also tried TRAILER TRASH, this one was really good! Beef chili (no beans), nacho cheese sauce and sprinkled with delightful Fritos. The chili was very tasty and not too greasy at all. The dog wasn't overloaded with cheese, it had just the right amount. The Fritos on top were excellent! I'd probably do this one again. Besides being pretty yummy, the chili made the dry bun not so dry. We both really enjoyed this one a lot, however it would have been better with grated cheese and if I made it at home myself. One night, around 12AM, driving on Abbot Kinney, we saw Dogtown Dogs truck right outside of the Otherroom Bar. We decided to catch a dog before going into Otherroom. I got the California Dog which is All beef dog with avocado, arugula, basil aioli, tomatoes, fried onions and a lite vinaigrette dressing! I wanted some portabello mushrooms so he added two small slices in and charge me a total of $7. It was DELICIOUS! I can't believe the flavors was coming from this dog! After seeing this truck parked in the lot of my climbing gym, I started arguing with my climbing partner over the merits of a relatively plain, spare hot dog versus the merits of a funky fancy fusion dog slathered in aioli and vegetables. (The argument devolved into me ranting about ketchup's total uselessness as a condiment in a voice so loud the entire gym could probably hear me, but anyway...) I'll start with the good: the tater tots were amazing. Crispy and sizzling hot with a good amount of still-soft potatoes simmering in the middle. They needed no sauce. But the dog - the 'California Dog' - on the 'funky fancy fusion' dog side of the hot dog divide... it just wasn't good. For many reasons. One was the amount of 'aioli' (orange mayo as far as I'm concerned) made the whole thing soggy and caused the bun to basically disintegrate, leaving me with a naked hot dog sliding around the foil covered with goo. California Dog (7$): what's seems to be a standard grocery store small hotdog in grocery store bun with a pile of greens and sprinkling of tomatoes with some green mayo. Dogtown Dogs is an attractive food truck (decked out in teal) that frequents Venice a lot (at The Brig). I've walked by it many times and I decided to finally pay it a visit even though I was not exceptionally hungry (nor a big fan of hot dogs). Downtown Dogs features a variety of hot dogs as well as tater tots (served as plain with salt, with nacho cheese and with hot sauce). I went with the Spicy Angeleno, which was a hot dog wrapped in smoked bacon and then topped with tomatillo sauce, spicy salsa fresca and fried jalapenos. The hot dog itself was just okay--nothing special but also nothing bad. The bacon flavor was not that prominent. Even though the hot dog was almost completely covered in bacon, the bacon was pretty soft (not crisp at all), which really kept the bacon flavor from coming out. The toppings had a good amount of heat to them. Not at first, but after a few bites, the heat really started to build. I did like the garnish of fired jalapenos. The hot dog bun was fine, but I think it was slightly over-toasted. They may do that though to keep the bun from getting soggy given all the toppings they use. They served the hot dog with four tater tots and I liked the tater tots. They were hot and moist in the center as well as very crisp on the outside. They did salt the tater tots heavily and even though it was strong, the hot tater tot and the abundance of salt seemed to go together well. The hot dog was $6 and even though it was more heavily garnished, I prefer the $5 bratwurst from the other truck Let's Be Frank. Better meat flavor, simpler and a softer bun. I also picked up a Mexican Coke at Dogtown Dogs and it was a large bottle and very reasonably priced at $2 each; unfortunately, it was not cold enough. Service was polite, friendly and the food came out pretty quick (takes about 5 minutes). There was no line on the day I visited. Given that I was not that hungry as well as not a big fan of hot dogs, I might not have been the best audience for this truck when I tried them. When I do have hot dogs, I kind of enjoy the first hot dog I have at a ball game to ease the initial hunger, but if I get that second hot dog, I tend to not like it as much. Still, I feel Dogtown Dogs is a lot like many other food trucks. The food is not good though not really bad either. You could probably easily find just as good food near you without trying to track down the truck. Because of that, I feel most food trucks are only worth a visit if you a big fan of the particular food being served. Therefore, if you do enjoy hot dogs, Dogtown Dogs might be worth a visit. If you are not a hot dog fan, you may want to seek out other trucks first. Parking can be difficult to find on Abbot Kinney, but you can find free street parking east of Abbot Kinney in the residential area of Venice. read more

With only five bucks left in my wristlet, this cheap - for a popular food truck - option seemed like a red-hot choice. I ordered the all-beef "Dogtown," a real mustard lover's hot dog. The store's signature item is a wet dog, piled high with fennel slaw, a few pieces of red pepper, overly generous amounts of dijon mustard, plus splashes of ketchup I wish I hadn't added. Not bad, but not a dog I'd go back for in particular. As I ate, I couldn't help but feel like I had gotten myself something that was probably intended for someone else. If I could do it over again, I'd probably have the "California Dog," which has crispy onions and avocado on it, for a dollar more. I was a fool not to go with the crispy onions... Regret upon regret, I wish I could have added an order of tots! But, there is always the next time. I was perusing truck reviews over the weekend and after reading their experiences with Dogtown Dogs, made a mental note to stop if I ever saw it. I'm cutting down Cauenga today and you'll never guess what I see parked just before Melrose??? OK, that one was pretty easy but after finding a place to park (that wasn't so easy) joined the one other person in line at 1:12p. Service wasn't just polite it was super friendly like you stopping for lunch is genuinely appreciated. I ordered the "Dogtown Dog" with whole grain dijon mustard and crisp fennel slaw with roasted red peppers and then remembered to get it wrapped in bacon. NOTE - this isn't clear on their main menu that it's an available add so don't forget (big thank you to the two above named for mentioning bacon and having it ingrained as part of my mental image). To go along with my hot dog did the Buffalo Tater Tots with a blue cheese dipping sauce and two bottles of Mexican coke (yes one for each component of my meal - what? - doesn't everyone do that?) Everything on the "Town Dog" worked perfectly with the right amount of crunch and flavors. I'd definitely say this is the dog to get if your concerned about not wanting something too spicy. The tots has the perfect amount of buffalo wing sauce to give them a slight kick while making the dressing the perfect extinguisher. They bang these puppies out with a smile so even if you see a line, the wait is at a minimum and oh so worth it! Best food truck service I have had to date! And I caught them on the tail end (@12am) of a crazy night at First Friday. In a back corner spot of the Brig I made my way back as I was hungry and wanted a hot dog. There was not a soul in line and I saw the crew inside moving stuff around so I thought for a minute that they were already closed. I walked up any way to see what they had to offer for next time and was greeted with a huge "HELLO what can I get for you tonight". Hooray they were open still and what a warm welcome! I went for the Buffalo Tots and the Spicy Angeleno Dog. Tots cam out in about 2 minutes and were piping hot and covered in spicy buffalo sauce. I would totally order them again. Spicy Angeleno Dog came out about 4 minutes later with an apology attached saying "sorry for the wait" Ummm 4 minutes is not bad at all but I appreciated it either way. The Spicy Angeleno was good and hit the spot but I wish the dog itself was spicy as I was looking for a little more heat. I also wanted it to be a little more saucy. Maybe a garlic aioli would have done the trick and made a nice addition to the dog. But they had me at Bacon Wrapped and in the end the dog and tots hit the spot. We randomly found the Dogtown Dogs truck along Abbot Kinney and were not disappointed. Looking at the menu...there is a chili dog with broken Fritos sprinkled over it, called the Trailer Trash Dog...a California Dog with avocado, a hot dog with grilled portabello mushrooms...the choice was obvious for me. I ordered the Morning Commute, and my lady friend (who always knows best) asked, "Do you want to die?" I thought about it. And then responded, "No. I want to eat a crispy, hard-wood smoked bacon-wrapped hot dog, topped with a fried egg." But apparently wrapping a hot dog in bacon is unhealthy, so I changed my order to the Dogtown Dog. And that crisp fennel slaw and those fragrant and delicious roasted red peppers (not to mention that whole grain dijon mustard) combined for a fantastic dog experience that was undoubtedly far, far healthier than the aforementioned Morning Commute. A very good dog. A truck with a short menu list that appealed to me. It didn't seem like they were trying to overdo or overdress a simple concept of hot dogs. The clean truck offsets any fears one would have about getting a bacon wrapped danger dog off the street. The hot dog I got was very warm, clean tasting, toasted bun. What' s NOT to like. I enjoyed it. The price for $6 wasn't horrible. I opted for the Morning Commute hot dog. A simple bacon wrapped sausage in a bun topped with a beautifully fried over easy egg. It came with some tater tots that seemed like an after thought. I actually wished that they had some real has browns to add that crunch texture to the dog. I think it might've added to the 'breakfast dog' idea. The egg was fried perfectly. I took a bite and delicious golden yellow yumminess oozed out onto the rest of the hot dog. Thumbs up. read more

My two favorite categories on Yelp are Hot Dogs and Food Trucks, so it should be a glorious meal when the two lists converge as one. I met Dogzilla last week and it was everything I expected. Sorry Dogtown you just didn't cut it. The Spicy Angeleno really didn't live up to it's name, sorry but it just wan''t spicy. And I won't I won't quibble that the ingredients aren't the traditional LA dog either. A bacon wrapped dog with tomatillo sauce, spicy salsa fresca and topped with fried jalapenos sounds great on paper, and looks awfully pretty too; but in reality, frying jalapenos sucks much of the flavor out of them, the tomatillo is mild to begin with, and the salsa fresca--don't get me started. I'll bet that Gerber has spicier items in the 12-24 month section. The worst was the bacon,. It wasn't anywhere close to crisp, so it wasn't bitable. When you bite into the dog, the bacon should snap more or less simultaneously with the dog. However when the bacon is soft and stringy, one can either leave the partially chewed piece dangling from the dog, or gnaw all the way to the end of the rasher. So it's not really a bacon dog it's a dog with a side of limp bacon. I also ordered what I call the Syracuse Tots. The guys on the truck call them Buffalo Tots, but the sauce was at least 150 miles from Buffalo. Again it was baby food bland. The tots weren't crispy and the Syracuse sauce made them soggy. Also, they were served with a toothpick because (even though I was the days1st customer) there were no forks on the truck. Try using a toothpick to dip a soggy tot into the ranch dressing sometime, it isn't fun. The guy says they ran out last night. llI guess it's hard to find a Smart & Final, Costco, Ralphs, Vons, Target, Albertson's, Food 4 Less, Wal-mart, 99 cent store, or Ma and Pa liquor store anywhere between where they live and South LA where they park the truck, or between South LA and Burbank. It's much easier to sell the tots, take the money and then explain when the order comes up that you wont have a fork for your soggy, saucy, crumbling tots. Bf was hungry this Friday night and it was nearing 10pm, so we decided to put our trust in Abbot Kinney and see what trucks were around. Lucky for us, Dogtown was parked in The Brig lot and the line was short! We stepped up and handed over $21 and 10 minutes or so later, we scurried away with our goods: * The California Dog, add bacon wrapped, add fried egg on top: avocado, arugula, basil aioli, tomatoes, fried onions and a lite vinaigrette. I loves me a fried egg on top of anything, and who doesn't like BACON? With the extras, this was top dog tonight! * Spicy Angeleno: bacon wrapped dog with extra tomatillo sauce, spicy salsa fresca and topped with fried jalapenos. This was a mighty tasty doggie - the fried jalapenos had just a hint of batter on them, and were a nice topping touch. * Cheesy tater tots: deep fried to crusty outside, tender middles, with a nacho-cheese-y type sauce on top. Like the frozen ones from childhood, taken up a notch! * Fennel slaw: vinegar-dressed fennel and red bell pepper slices - crunchy, slightly wilted or possibly blanched so it was more tender than raw fennel. This stuff added a nice bite to the richer food we were eating, so it was good together. * Diet Coke * Fiji water These dogs were definitely healthier feeling than your average tube of nitrate processed meat, and they are a thing of beauty for the moment before they are demolished! The food trucks have descended on downtown LA, specifically on 3rd and Grand. I tend to stay away from the Asian fusion trucks; they're just not my thing. After 3 consecutive lunches from Dogtown, I give them 4 solid stars. Trailer Trash = chili, nacho cheese, and Fritos. This one is so wrong it's right. Best eaten with a fork unless you want a lap full of chili. California Dog = avocado, arugula, tomatoes, fried onions, basil aioli. I don't remember seeing any arugula on mine but that's fine. Sounds like a weird combo but the flavors work. Dogtown Dog = fennel slaw, dijon mustard, roasted red peppers. This was my least favorite. By the time I got back in the office, the bun had fallen apart completely from the fennel slaw. But what remained tasted good. Tater tots with nacho cheese. Need I say more? I know people make a big deal about whether a dog snaps or not. I'm not from Chicago so I'm not particular about the anatomy of a hot dog. I just like stuff that tastes good. Dogtown Dogs provides a tasty lunch at a reasonable price with good service. $5-6 for a dog is not too bad. However, $2 for a can soda is pretty crazy. That would be my only complaint. read more

Here's what you get for $8: A bland sausage, a generic bun with no texture, lemon aioli that you can't taste (but you can feel--very fatty), and, in its entirety, a reallyreallyreally under-seasoned hot dog. I loved this truck! I had a California dog & tater tots. The arugula, crispy onions and aioli sauce went so well together all on top of the all beef dog! Delish! Didn't taste tok heavy at all! The tater tots were crisp and you could tell they change out the oil consistently! That says a lot because my buds are hard to please when it comes to my spuds! For some reason I could smell hot dogs when my husband and I walked to our qigong class this morning. That hankering stayed with us. Then later we saw Dogtown Dogs' truck on the side of the road, calling to us like a beacon in a stormy sea. Okay, so it's a sunny, beautiful day. We pulled over to have an early lunch. "Come back in half an hour. We'll be here until 6!" Okay, we'll do some errands.... Noon. We park in the neighboring lot. As we walk up, they close their windows and we are told they're moving "down the street." Get back in our car and pull out to find they meant they were moving two car lengths. Husband is grumbling now, but I talk him into parking again due to my dogged (ba dump bump) determination to try their fare. There is a small line. We order two California Dogs, two Tater Tots and fennel slaw. "Sorry, the fennel salad isn't ready yet." Seriously?! You just opened for lunch and don't have your slaw ready, and it's a major component to one of the few dogs you serve?! Not good. We take our order home a few minutes away. Our opinion of the Tater Tots: Greasy and fried. I liked the flavor and the crunch. They just needed to be blotted with paper towels a tad bit more. Salted just right. Husband didn't like them (he likes them baked and soft *:/ ) The California Dog? Meh. All I could taste were the greasy fried onions on top. The arugula was overpowered by the onions. The tomato "slivers" were inconsequential. The avocado (shown as slices on someone else's picture) was a mashed mess which caused the bun to disintegrate. I could taste no other flavors, just greasy fried onions. Bottom line, Dogtown Dogs just didn't cut the mustard. I'd rather eat a Costco dog. Or better yet, a Chicago dog at Portillo's in Chicago. Both my husband and I were left with that greasy queasy feeling in our stomachs. I did get a cool shot of their truck, though, with palm trees in the background! lol read more

I recently had their food again at an event they catered. Same thing, I wasn't wowed, but I wasn't disgusted. I'm a little disappointed with how soggy their buns get and how their hot dog options are plain, plain and nasty soy dogs. I wish they had sausage or something with more flavor. Overall the taste was okay, it was just a salad on a hot dog and the ingredients, spreads and sauces didn't go far enough.
