Creative flavors at a high price. I work across the street so I was bound to come here for some gelato on a summer day. The employee who helped us was nice enough to give us suggestions and samples of different unique flavors (which was needed being the indecisive lady that I am). I decided to get the banana foster and the frosted strawberry in a size small. Now. The small is very small. Although it can hold two flavors, the cup is about the size of a large egg (lol). That large egg sized gelato cup is a whopping 5 bucks! Although the gelato was scrumptious diddliumcious, it's pricing is a little ridiculous. I'd definitely come here again perhaps when I'm in a splurgey mood. read more

We ate at a restaurant nearby and needed something to make us feel satisfied. Whoa. Sounds sexual. But, I guess it's fitting, because it was almost an orgasmic experience. Yes, this gelato flavor was THAT good. My daughter wanted the typical vanilla, so we went with that one for her. It was good. We also got the Thai Coconut flavor and the Salted Caramel one. The Thai Coconut was good, as well. Not a strong coconut flavor though, if that's what you are looking for. Now, as for that Salted Caramel....... Wow. Just WOW. I honestly wasn't expecting to like it this much, but after the first spoon, I almost went back in to order the whole bucket! My wife wanted to try some. I have to admit, I almost said, "F@#$ off! Get your own!!" But, with my life flashing before my eyes, I decided that sharing is better than divorce. Now, my wife isn't a dessert person. While she likes desserts here and there, nothing really excites her when it comes to sweets (only Kinder chocolates do that). But, after trying this, she wanted me to not only get the bucket, but to wait in line for tomorrow's bucket, too! Yes, it's THAT good! Sadly, while I was planning to go here again the following night, I never made it back. BUT, I believe they do online orders! Score! I don't care if the shipping is $1000, I'm ordering! I came to Dolcezza earlier today when my friend and I were craving some gelato. The staff was super friendly with us when we asked to try a couple flavors. I got the Butter Pecan and Tiramisu. The Tiramisu was BOMBBB. Def recommend it. Butter Pecan was also pretty good, but not as much of a stand out. My friend got the Salted Caramel and Dark Chocolate (an awesome combo BTW). Sorry guys, but with the prices they charge for what they serve, it should be somewhat bigger for a small. Came in here on Saturday night after dinner at Silver Diner. My wife and I tried a couple of flavors, and thought they were good. We get our servings and were shocked by the size! The small was very small! We both grew up in NYC, and know what a small should be. We were disappointed by the size, and wondered why they can get away with something like this. If they tried this back home, they would be run out of town already. Tried the Thai Coconut Milk, and there was very little Coconut flavor in it. That and the Mint flavored Gelato really didn't have much flavor as well. Not sure if we would return here or not, only time will tell with this place. read more

The owner(s) of this shop is definitely putting his or her love into this business. Upon walking in you are greeted by friendly, professional, and smiling employees who happily help you through the daunting task of picking your flavors. And with interesting flavors like lemon ricotta, mango chardonnay, thai coconut milk, valhorna chocolate...it is quite the task narrowing down your choices. After a hectic week...or day, sometimes a little pampering is all you need to get back on track. Do not underestimate the power of a little cup of gelato. I dropped in for a post-work lunch coffee and was highly disappointed. I attempted to order a medium half-caff and was promptly told by the puzzled-looking guy behind the counter that he could not brew a half-caff, because it would involve brewing two cups of coffee. I found this kind of ridiculous, even with a pour-over approach (can't they use half caffienated beans and half decaf... hence the half caff?? How hard is that??). Nonplussed, I paid for my order. When he finished brewing the cup, I was further annoyed that my "medium" coffee was a 10 oz cup of liquid (akin to what you would see if your office has a Flavia brewer or the like). So, I paid nearly three cents per ounce of liquid, or $2.69 for less than the size of a tall beverage at your local Starbucks. The coffee was tasty, but this does not offset the fact that the barista/associate/whatever could not accommodate a pretty simple request from the customer, and definitely not worth the price. I will never go back to this place. Thumbs down, Dolcezza. read more

This was strictly a gelato trip for me. They have a lot of unique flavors so my bf and I decided to try a little bit of everything. We tried the Pistachio, Banana, Cinnamon Sumatra, Salted Caramel and Thai Coconut Milk gelato. All flavors were very distinct. Texture wise, the gelato is very smooth and creamy and a little on the thinner side. My favorite was the pistachio which was very light yet nutty. Mmmmmm, sooo good! Runner up was salted caramel (I have a soft spot for anything salted caramel). Least favorite was cinnamon sumatra. The cinnamon was a bit overwhelming and it didn't really taste like gelato. The sorbet menu is just as unique. Tangerine, blood orange, lime cilantro were just a few that I noted. I snuck in a champagne mango sample. It was sooooo good, it tasted like fresh mango with the pit and all. My boyfriend stared at me in disbelief as I begged him for a cup of sorbet after five scoops of gelato! I got the "you are a fatass" stare and we promptly left, HAHAHAAHHA. I'll be sure to update my review after I try the sorbet. read more

***4.50 stars*** My BFF has me totally hook on the cappuccinos here. The first time she told me about them I was a tad bit skeptical. I have some pretty high standards for espresso drinks, so for her to claim that Dolcezza would surely impress me was placing a tall order for the little coffee and gelatoria. I'm glad to say that they met, and even exceeded, my expectations. A lot of coffee shops' cappuccinos and lattes are either bitter or sour (err..Starbucks...). I'm not sure what the appeal of either of these flavors are, but most places' cups come with bold amounts of both, so apparently a lot of people like it. I prefer my cappuccinos and lattes to have a more nutty and chocolaty flavor profile personally, which leads to a lot of expensive disappoint due to the average offerings I come across. Happily, Dolcezza gets it just about perfect. Their cappuccinos are creamy, nutty, and only ever so slightly sour. Not bad at all. And the best part is that I now don't have to drive into the DC to get a good cup of Joe! Although Dolcezza is not on the level of Tryst or Pound the Hill with their coffee creations, they definitely satisfy my needs when I can't justify a trip into the city. I highly recommend checking them out...and pairing your cup with one of their yummy biscotti! read more

I came in for the gelato. It was delicious and the list of flavors is impressive. The star however reflects the poor customer service I received. I had no problems waiting as there was a couple in front of me who had a lot of questions. The woman behind the counter acknowledged me and said that I was next in line after them. After they placed their order she offered me a sample and rang them up. While I waited for her to finish, two guys walked in and she immediately took their order for coffee and rang it up, completely ignoring that I had been waiting longer. I was also ignored by her colleague when I was ready to pay. Her excuse to me was that they were understaffed that night. She had no answer when I confronted her about waiting on customers who arrived after me. I am never going back to this place. Worst experience ever. read more

The gelato is fine. I have serious issues with the service. Saturday evening, line out the door. I can understand they're busy. But then, a server 1) scooped up a piece of gelato from where it had fallen on the freezer and put it back on the cone 2) used her bare hands to adjust her headband and hair, and then, the piece de la resistance 3) WIPED HER NOSE WITH HER BARE HANDS AND KEPT RIGHT ON SCOOPING. Spotted this place during my lunch break last week and made a mental note to come back and visit. Everyone knows I am a coffeeee lova! I love coffee...I can drink it day and night...hot or cold. Stopped by Dolcezza on this past snowy Saturday afternoon and entered this beautiful glass house of caffeine. There are some interesting combos on their menu but, the cashier happily explained each item I was curious about. He seemed almost too happy to do so but, I really appreciated his energy. The prices are comparable to a Starbucks but, please note that all drinks come in 1 size. Boo and I ordered a latte and a capuccino and we sat in the corner of the glasshouse watching the world passing us by. The location is right in front of the Angelika Theatre and is perfect for people watching. I loved my latte til the very last drop. So I will definitely be back to try their gelato and pastries very soon! read more

This place is super cute. I love how it's smack dab in the middle of the Mosaic District, right near the little fountains, where you can watch delighted toddlers jump in and out. Its strategic location is fantastic for meeting with friends since you have an easy point of reference. Can't tell you about their coffee, but my chai latte was pretty good, though Caffe Amouri in Vienna still tops my list for best chais in the area. read more

To start with, Dolcezza makes amazing artisan gelato. There are a variety of flavors, and some new flavors to try each time. My personal favorites include the thai coconut milk, black sesame, and avocado honey orange. My friends hosted a private event a couple weeks ago at the additional coffee location across from the gelato store in front of the Angelika Movie Theater. The venue was great for a small party, and was very well hosted by the Dolcezza staff. They even invented a specialty drink that's not normally on their menu for the occasion. All in all, it was a great experience. The staff were friendly, and really added to the party experience. The ambiance of a glass room in the middle of Mosaic was a great concept for a party, and the food. pastries, and drinks were all top notch. read more

Came back another day and ordered a double mocha and they told me they can't make it because they ran out of chocolate. At 2pm on a Sunday. I ordered a croissant here and they offered to warm it up for me. Not only did it take 10 minutes and I had to follow-up, but they served it to me warning me that it could need to be warmed up more, but that wouldn't be a problem. All I had to do was let them know. No problem. I took one bite and it was still cold, so I asked them to warm it back up and they said they couldn't stick it back in the oven because I already took a bite. I dropped in here for a post-doctors appt treat. I am a huge gelato connoisseur and while the flavors were really good, I was not impressed with the serving size (or price). I understand quality ingredients and fantastic product= high price, so I don't mind that but the service size for a small was pretty ridiculous. The gelato-server-dude even weighed it to ensure the proper tiny portion size! I do have to say the space was gorgeous- chalkboard walls to display pricing, white marble counters and very clean space. They even have small already-filled to-go containers of gelato, though you could not get their smaller half pint size of any flavor to go, only the larger full pint sizes. The staff were friendly as well. Dolcezza has some pretty unique flavors, as I was able to try their cinnamon, salted caramel, and mint chocolate. As much as I liked the pistachio flavor (my fav), I will stick with Pitango- which overloads your cup and is well worth the price you pay. read more

A hot summer day simply calls for some ice cream. Fortunately this gelato place was nearby as I was hanging out in the area. They have quite a few interesting options. After sampling the Thai coconut and mint stracciatella (I order this general flavor so often but I always fail to pronounce it correctly), I knew I wanted these two. The small is two scoops and even though they put it in a tiny cup, the scoops are certainly large enough to overflow the cup. The gelato was so satisfying and I pretty much devoured it (though to be fair, it was starting to melt and getting messy). I love the mosaic district and this little coffee shop is super cute! It's hard to miss because it's right in the center of the mosaic district. Their coffee is really good. I got the caramel latte which was so creamy and smooth and not too sweet which is just the way I like it! They have a good selection of pastries which I plan on trying next time I go in. I was somewhat disappointed about my experience with their berries gelato. Maybe it was the heat or maybe it was the consistency of the gelato but my cone was a hot mess. After I got my cone I walked across the street and let's just say my sandal actually ate most of my gelato. It was literally less than a minute walk to the bench where my friend and I sat and by then I was losing a fight. The gelato was melting EVERYWHERE. I will definitely try this place again and hopefully my next experience will be better...or better yet, next time I'll get my gelato in a cup instead. read more

I stopped here one morning while passing by the area to get my coffee fix. As a coffee shop this is different than Starbucks and it competitors. They offered pour over coffees. The coffee was excellent. It took several minutes to prepare the coffee and the cup was not large. The shop has some interesting Gelato flavors and had displays of tasty looking pastries. Since it was early in the morning, I just had coffee. I'll probably return sometime to try the Gelato or am in the mood for a good cup of coffee. read more

Definitely very flavorful gelato for a hefty price. It was around 5 bucks for a small cup but the flavors are really divine. I got a 1/2 and 1/2 small cup with black sesame and blueberry lavender. I really loved the black sesame flavor, it tasted like roasted sesame seeds but it worked as a desert. Really interesting flavor. The blueberry lavender was sort of a miss for me, it felt like it had a weird lavender artificial flavor but maybe getting it with the black sesame wasn't a good move on my part. I definitely think their gelato has really good flavor and consistency and it was perfect for a hot day out. read more

This place is a hit or miss in my book. I've been here a few times and have gotten various items. Most recently, I got the affogato (espresso with your choice of gelato); I chose salted caramel with espresso, and it wasn't too bad, but it melted so quickly and was very salty. It was an interesting combo, but I'm not sure how I felt about it. The pistachio had no flavor of the nut, but clementine and apple are good. I've learned to realize that the adjectives are there just to lure you in (Thai coconut - no true flavor of coconut). So don't pay attention to the descriptors! My vote goes for the sorbet not gelato for sure. The place is clean and nice, with a few stools looking outside which is cool. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable and fun to talk to. They give suggestions on combos of flavors. I also like that you get two flavors in a small size. This place is very pricey though, and i don't think the return is that great. Bottom line: I would only come back here is someone else wanted to try it. And I would only order the clementine or apple sorbet flavor. read more

This a great little spot! I wanted to try the gelato and this place did not disappoint! The place is very cozy inside. Well, who wants to sit inside anyway? Grab that gelato and sit outside on the bench in front of the store. The bench out front is prime real estate for people watching, while enjoying that nice scoop of delicious gelato you just bought! I don't generally like peanut butter flavored anything, but the PB gelato was to die for. I also had a chocolate chip gelato and it was SO tasty. Two flavors in a small size??!! Yes, please!! If you aren't sure what flavor you'd like, they will give you a small taste. I tried the Thai Coconut and Peaches and Cream. They were both smooth, creamy, and not too sweet. I was very excited to find that the two flavors mixed together were even better than separately. The small size was quite petit, but the perfect size to sample something sweer without over indulging. I will be back the next time I'm in the area. read more

I know people rave about the gelato at dolcezza , but I haven't been impressed either in-store or by the pints at whole foods. All ice cream is good, but there are better options, in the area. This particular location is ready nice however the service is slow. They're great about handing out samples (the coconut milk is the best of the flavors). This location also offers espresso. It's decent, a little bitter, but the price isn't right. Service hasn't been particularly friendly, last time I ordered coffee here, I asked for half and half as the only container they had out was cream. Love the Lemon Ricotta Cardamon gelato, and most of the sorbets. I think I've tried them all. I usually like the ones that have some sort of spice or herb. The champagne mango made it a hard decision for me and I almost had to get all 3 flavors. Kids got little cones of roasted strawberry that were definitely not the average strawberry flavor. Wonderful, creamy gelato from one of DC's favorite purveyors of the Italian version of ice cream. The quality of the ingredients that go into this gelato come right through, producing a product having a very nice smoothness and richness. I tried two flavors at the opposite extremes of the spectrum last night: first, a mint chocolate where the flavor of the mint and the chocolate were nicely balanced, followed by a butter pecan that was simply heavenly - that nice buttery flavor of the pecans through-and-through, with some very finely chopped pieces of pecan giving the gelato a nice texture and a little bit of crunch. On a previous excursion, I had one of their chocolate pops, a grown-up version of a rich chocolate gelato on a stick. The chcolate would satisfy any dark chocolate lover, and who doesn't like the idea of portable gelato? All in all, a really nice after-dinner treat! read more

Perhaps I was spoiled by a trip to Italy in the springtime where I spent a lot of time walking and eating gelato as a snack between sightseeing and museums. It seems I alone am not a huge fan of this gelato shop. When in Italy, I ate a good deal of gelato and I think Dolcezza does a decent job at making a run of the mill average gelato. I think their flavors are great. They are intense and concentrated, but I feel the gelato was missing something in its consistency. I got the vanilla and the salted caramel. Halfway through the salted caramel, the salt and sweet was just too much and I couldn't finish... the vanilla was decent and I managed through all of it but it was missing that creamy, silky, smoothness that makes your eyes widen at the first scoop and makes you say wow with every bite til the last scoop. That type of gelato is hard to come by but once you do it'll stay with you forever. read more

It's confusing to figure out who to give orders to and you're not quite sure if your order is even being handled. But this should improve over time with experience. read more
