FRAUD ALERT! We were selecting CDW options at the Dollar desk, and the agent explained that emergency road service was included in the CDW cost. We did not want the road service, but if it's free, why not? So we accepted the road service. Imagine my surprise when we were billed for the road service. This is out and out fraud. When we tried to remove the charge, the phone agent said it was absolutely impossible. DO NOT RENT FROM DOLLAR. We certainly never will again. They'll screw you with fraudulent charges. read more

Initial contact was OK, attempting to leave lot took 1/2 hour. After giving paper work to booth, they asked for car keys-did not return. When I discovered keys missing, called emergency number-was 20 minutes away from office, but calls went unanswered. Car towed back to rental lot Was given "upgrade"-previously damaged vehicle, with 60,000 miles?? I was blamed for damage-Dollar tried to commit credit card fraud by charging an un-authorized amount to my credit card. Am filing police report. When we arrived to pick up our rental customer service was rude and not friendly. Left with a bad taste in our mouth. Upon return of the rental we were told don't worry about the gas tank not being full, which was misinformation, my credit card was charged $85. When I went inside to speak with someone from customer service was once rude again. Spoke to management who was helpful and took care of the situation. The manager who was nice and had great customer service skills he should teach the woman at the front desk. read more

WARNING watch out!!! They turned my rental for a $157 to almost $500!!! I prepare thru Expedia, and when I got there I asked if they had a free upgrade...the lady said we can upgrade you no problem (noticed she left off "free") and set me up with a nice SUV then asked about insurance and I said no thank you, no extras I have insurance, she then said (so just the "basic xyz then?" and I said yes (not knowing I just agreed to an extra $50 a day. Once I got the bill...it was $877. I was told that $500 was a refundable deposit and then 112 would come off that for what I paid....but that's not what happened. I paid the 112 thru Expedia and got hit with an additional 378 fee...all due to deceptive practices. Stay away!!! They asked me to contact them after I posted a review somewhere else, and I did......2hrs later no response! They don't care, they took my money...please BEWARE!! I would have given zero stars if it were an option. Three different employees at the location at the Detroit airport are purposely lying to customers. They must get paid extra if customers prepay for gas. I was told three different times by three different employees that if I prepay for gas and don't use the full tank, I would be refunded the difference. Mixed. Shuttle drivers were super friendly and helpful. Counter service worked hard to upsell me and my bill is much higher than originally quoted so I have to work through the charges and probably contest some of them. My car was dirty inside and out, as in crumbs etc. Smelled of cigarette smoke and air freshener. The entertainment panel would not pair with my phone. Just as I was leaving, I noticed a warning that the tires on the left side were inflated to 23 and the tires on the right side were at 33. I told the attendant, who asked me if I wanted air, as if it were an imposition. A guy drove up with a whole new car and said he didn't like to send people out with leaky tires. The new car was fresher inside and let my phone pair with it so I could see my GPS. So, some nice people but there are clearly some quality control issues and my $355 bill is now $455 so what's up with that. I wouldn't use Dollar in Detroit again. Or maybe anywhere. read more

Insuffieicent staffed. When the airport shuttle pulled up to the car rental place, one of the two staffers checking in drivers left on a break, leaving just one to service the entire line. Meanwhile, Hertz had four staffers waiting to help customers. I won't use Dollar rental again. Dol We are disputing the charges incurred during the rental period October 4-7, 2019 in the amount of $245.88 in Detroit, Michigan. We have never, ever purchased additional insurance nor road side assistance for a rental car.  We already carry full automobile insurance and AAA that already covers us for insurance and roadside assistance.  Thus, we would never buy additional, useless coverage. The agent obviously didn't explain the charges nor asked for additional initials at the time as we would never had agreed. The signature at the bottom of the contract was given agreeing to the car rental and NOT additional coverage. We are hoping you do the right thing and forgive these charges. was given a car that had a leaky tire. Filled it up once thinking it was due to a change in the temperature, but it was low again by the time I got to my destination. I called Dollar and they told me to turn around and drive back (one the low tire) and to fill up the gas on the way back!!! Insult to injury. Don't rent from this location. They are thieves. Made my rental arrangements for a week rental through Expedia. Required I prepay for the rental. Plans changed before I rented and I needed a car for less than a day. Counter agent assured me they would credit the difference to Expedia . Who would them process my refund. Expedia attempted to do this and were told by Dollar that it's Company policy to apply the full voucher value to a rental regardless of duration. In essence, this location intentionally misrepresented company policy and used that misrepresentation to steal several hundred dollars from me. I urge you to not make the same mistake. read more

This was by far the worst customer experience I have had with a rental car business. My agent Rod (yep, the pushy guy in dreadlocks mentioned in another review) argued with nearly everything I said. The whole process took about 20 minutes when it should have taken 2 minutes. First he tried to upsell me on the car. No thanks. I told him he could give me whatever car he wanted, but I was only going to pay the rate on my reservation. He went on about 4 wheel drive and safety and blah blah blah for a while, and I just waited him out. Really dude, I'm going to pay what I already agreed to pay. He continued to argue and try to sell me additional insurance even after I repeatedly told him that my personal insurance policies were sufficient. I had to keep explaining that I understood MI's no fault rules, loss of use, deductibles, and on and on. He told me verbatim that if I "didn't want to argue with him", I should have signed up for Dollar Express, and that he "wouldn't trust AAA (my perfectly reputable insurance company) in this snow". Dead serious. He also argued with me when I declined prepaid gas and said I would return the tank full, and went so far as to interrogate me about why I wanted a rental car in the first place if I wasn't going to use a full tank of gas. If I wasn't going to drive that much, why didn't I just have someone pick me up and then shuttle me around all week? Then he went on about what I was wearing, and how he thought I needed a better coat. At this point, it was already clear we were NOT having any sort of friendly rapport, and if looks could kill, he'd no longer be talking, and STILL, he finds it appropriate to talk about nonsense like this. To top it all off, I ended up with a crappy car with over 45,000 miles on it (the only one left in the lot in my category). The brakes sucked in the snow, triggering the ABS with very mild braking, which felt pretty unsafe. It was absolutely absurd, and I will never use this location again, even if they're half the price of the other airport options, and I will be hesitant to use any Dollar location at all if this is what they consider customer service. The only bright side was the very courteous/helpful/safe/efficient shuttle drivers. read more

I was in town from California and had to rent a car for a convention in downtown Detroit. What a mistake renting from Dollar!! There were two other people in line before me but it took 30 minutes for the Dollar employees to assist them. Once it was my turn, I was assisted by an African American male with dreadlocks. He introduced himself by shaking hands and calling me "my friend. "He was anything but that....first he tried SO HARD to up sale me into a larger car when I did not need one I and was very honest to him about going downtown and back for the convention. Then the damage waiver talk started..... He pretty much told me that even though I am fully insured by a large credible insurance company if someone hit me I would still be at fault because I did not purchase the DW. I explained to him numerous times I was not interested in the DW. He would not stop pressuring me into purchasing it. He was sooooo pushy, rude, and unprofessional. He made a poor attempt trying to explain No Fault insurance laws in the state of Michigan. Maybe this was due to my inability to understand him because his uneducated use of the English Language. However, the car I rented was perfect for my trip and of course there were no accidents. read more

They charge you extra nonsense fees two months later without your consent, such as toll administration fees which could be 10x bigger than your toll fees. They would never let you that before you rent the vehicle, or even after you return the vehicle and pay the bill. Shuttle driver told me that Toledo was 3-4 hours from the airport (it is 45 minutes), so started my experience with Dollar. Check in was with a grumpy guy who was trying hard to get me to upgrade by $70/day, he then convinced me to pre pay for the gas and I only used a little over a 1/4 tank, so they got me at the end! Returning the car on a Friday afternoon was a joke. Because I wanted to pay with a different card than I used for the deposit, I had to go stand in line. They only had 2 people working during what has to be peak hours. Stood in line for 40 minutes. When I finally got up to the counter and said I wanted to pay with a different card, I first got an eye roll and then a lecture on what a pain it was to do this. Dollar needs to work on customer service! This is the last time I will use them. Although their prices are cheap, unfortunately their service reflects that as well. read more

Renting from this Dollar Rental will likely be the worst and most costly mistake of your trip! I chose this company because the estimated rental rate was low. When I arrived to pick up the car, the rental "contract" awkwardly appears on an the credit card swipe pad, which the dollar rental representative encourages you to bypass as he/she "explains" the agreement. There is no printed/carbon copy for review of the agreement. Upon return of the vehicle my balance was twice the expected amount! I found that I had apparently "agreed" to multiple miscellaneous charges. I also found the one fee I knowingly agreed to was actually a "per day" fee, which the representative conveniently left out of her explanation. When I attempted to resolve the issue, the manager REPEATEDLY said "YOU signed the contract, and felt the need to explain the meaning of "contract"/ "agreement." I felt purposefully deceived and unsatisfied with the customer service. I will never rent from any Dollar Rental again and definitely recommend NOT renting from the Detroit airport Dollar Rental. read more

I had great service at the counter. Then I went out to get my car. I was told 2 different things. I had a mid size car and the guy outside sent me to the compact cars. So then I picked a car and then went to check out and they told me I couldn't get the car I was in. So I went back and picked another car. The car seats don't recline so you have to sit up straight. I haven't actually rented a car from them, but that's only because I couldn't get past their terrible customer service. I found a good rate on Expedia (which by the way was lower than the supposedly guaranteed lowest rate on their website), but I had a few questions I wanted to ask. I waited on hold for about 15 minutes, during which I could hear the loop of holding messages perfectly, but when the agent finally came on the line, I could barely hear him. I explained that I couldn't hear him. I had to plug my other ear to make out him saying that his microphone was up all the way. I tried asking him my questions, and I could not hear the responses for the life of me. I was calling from my office phone, which works just fine and I had just used it that morning. I asked if he could call me on my cell phone, thinking maybe that was the problem. He refused, very quietly stating again that his microphone was up all the way. I asked to be transferred to someone else whose phone was working properly and once again he told me his microphone was all the way up. I explained that I had already waited on hold for fifteen minutes, could he please transfer me to someone else. He told me he would transfer me, and then he just sent me back to the beginning of the automated phone system. So, I called Enterprise, who answered on the second ring and I could magically hear perfectly. I'm happy to pay a few extra bucks for the upbeat and helpful agent who actually seemed to care instead of the awful service at Dollar Rentacar. read more

Terrible policies -- you have to bring a gas receipt from a station w/in 10 miles of the rental location or they say they'll charge you $9 per gallon. Pretty awful service. Waited 45 minutes for my shuttle to arrive even after calling them twice. Was stuck at the airport at 1am til the shuttle came closer to 2am. Then I waited to get my car (it was snowing) which meant scraping the ice, etc. Got to my hotel by 3am. The process could be a bit more streamlined, better communication with customer service. read more

Do NOT rent from this Location!!! TOTAL DISASTER! They give out dirty cars and then try to stick you with a $300 cleaning fee!!! I was just informed that I was being charged a $300 cleaning fee because the car was returned with cigarette ashes inside of it. PROBLEM IS I don't smoke! I never have. This charge was put on the rental agreement after I l returned the car. I was NEVER informed.I called their billing department and they are going to take days to resolve this. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE! So not only do they give out DIRTY CARS, they try to DEFRAUD YOU, and then take their sweet time to resolve the matter. As a business traveler and the owner of a travel agency, I will NOT be using DOLLAR rental car again! CLEARLY, the management team here has taken its eye completely OFF THE BALL!!! read more

We flew into Detroit to visit family on June 26th. Dollar Rental wasn't operating out of their normal place of business, we were never told or given this direction. We spent 30-45 minutes driving around trying to find them. I finally had to flag down a police officer for help, who told me we had to enter the Hertz rental location because they were operating out of there, which is frustrating in itself. Upon returning the vehicle we stood there while they inspected everything, was told it looked great and they would email us the final cost breakdown. We were charged an additional $300 in "damage fees" which shocked me. When I called, I sat on hold for 62 minutes, for them to tell me the damage fees were charged for smoking in the vehicle. My 7 month old son was in that car, i can PROMISE you there was NO SMOKING!!!! They told me the charge was valid and they could do nothing more to help. I am extremely disappointed and furious and will NEVER rent from them again. read more

I went here to rent a car and I received my paperwork at 1:56 PM but the rental agent talked to me until 2:00 pm and said as long as I brought the car back in 3 days by 2:00 PM there would be no extra charge. Then when I went to drive the car out, the guard said the rental agent's scanner didn't work and she had to check me out there. Now it's probably 2:10.. because I've had to walk 6 rows to pick out my car and load my luggage and adjust mirrors.. So on my 3rd day of rental, I wake up to find the car won't start. it's a cold morning.. so I simply call the customer repair service toll line and the said they would come out for $78.88 because I didn't buy enough insurance. I bought $41 extra insurance for 3 days but it didn't cover a dead battery. I said that it should be expected when you rent a car for the battery to work. I know when I go on vacation and I am driving that I make sure the oil is changed and that the tires have air and that the battery is charged. I also had to pay a local gas station to fill the tires because the air was low. thanks a lot Dollar.. did you really check this car out before renting it?? Here's what it cost me to rent from them: 2 hours of my last day of vacation running around trying to get THEIR battery fixed and losing time to spend with family I hadn't seen in 3 years. $$10 to charge the battery. $20 in cab rides. $2.00 to fill the low tires with air. AND here's the kicker. When I arrived back about 2:06 PM and parked in line and waited my turn for them to check me in, they charged me $1.65 for being a few minutes late!!!!! I wasn't late according to your calculations on check in. DOLLAR IS THE CHEAPEST, LOW DOWN ,SCAMMING , DISHONEST CAR RENTAL COMPANY I EVER ENCOUNTERED. The driver from the airport was SO friendly and helpful. That ends the positive aspect of our experience. What is it with people in Detroit? Here and there you run into people that LOVE having a job (or can fake it) or they act like complete d-bags that would rather be panhandling but it is too cold outside. We got to the rental place around 1am because of flight delays. Two people at the counter and they shared some look like "I don't feel like it" until one of them finally blinked. When they finally decided which one was going to have to do their job, we found out why their prices are cheaper than everyone else; just like Frontier they CHARGE EXTRA FOR EVERYTHING. You get the hard sell on the insurance that is a daily charge. They really push it by telling you that if something happens to the car and you don't take their insurance that THEY CHARGE YOU DAILY FOR THE CAR UNTIL IT IS FIXED. They try to talk you into buying the tank saying it is cheaper than at the airport but they are counting on you having at least half of a tank when you drop it off (I bought it and they probably had to push the car to fill it back up again). The only reason I bought it is because of the reviews from people who were charged for not topping off the tank when they had. Oh, you want to put your spouse on the car so that they can drive if needed? Yeah, that's another $15/day just to put them on it. We skipped that and during our visit I got sick and couldn't drive. We called to go ahead and pay the fee (just in case they have cameras and check) and their answer was "you need to drive back here to add that". We were 2 hours away, no thanks. read more

Somehow they scammed me for almost double that price. DO NOT rent from them. There are plenty of good car rental agencies out there. When I got on the shuttle to go to airport, I said out loud that I would never rent from Dollar again, to which the driver replied "Let me guess, they charged you for insurance you did not want"....just proves this happens all the time. I am 8 months pregnant and had to walk across the road/multiple parking lots to another rental company. They didn't even care. I hope Yelp comes out with a ZERO stars option. This was one of the worst experiences I ever had. I was completely tricked on the insurance and never shown an itemized quote. (I said, ":i want no additional insurance' and the woman assumed I meant the basic plan) After I reached the exit booth, I realized my receipt had an astronomical number on it, so i turned back. When i went to the counter, a different agent (man who Kelli below referred to). He was extremely condescending, and held me there for 15 minutes talking about what a mistake i was making. I told him numerous times that i have rented cars before, and I was doing almost no driving while in Michigan. He just would not give up! I finally was able to get out, but I will never go back to this place. Today I picked up my rental car from Dollar at Detroit Metro Airport today. I walked into the rental location and there were at least 30 people in line. After about 30 minutes I inquired about the use of the three Kiosks that were there. I was told all three were out of service. Now.. its Easter weekend as well as Spring break and all three of your Automated units are down, really? Poor Management... There were only two reps available to assist this long line of patrons...I finally was waited on by a lady name Autumn...Boy, she had no customer service skills what so ever. She was short, curt and rude, AND she did not even say thank you for my business. I think they had an attitude because I asked about the broken Kiosks...Anyway, this was my first and my last experience there...I'll spend my money where I can get good customer service! Rented a car from Dollar in Detroit as an addition to my flight on Cheaptickets.com. Reserved a Dodge Charger or similar. Got to Dollar, ducked the insurance up-sell and asked if they had a Dodge Charger on the lot. Was informed I did not rent a car in that class and would need to upgrade my rental. I am in the market for a new car and wanted to drive a Charger to check it out so I upgraded to my original reservation class. Got out to the lot and had the choice between 5 Chevy Malibu base models or a Chrysler 200, not a good choice on the lot. Took the Chrysler, drove it to Lansing, parked it for 3 days, drove it back to Detroit airport and turned it in. I was informed the car was 'damaged' and I would have to fill out an accident report. A minor scuff on the rear quarter (I did not cause), was billed to me at $750.00 to repair. On the accident report I noted the damage was not caused by me, a weak argument but very true, and would cost not more than $50.00 to buff out. A car wash would remove all signs of this damage. Anyway, I am now letting Dollar take me to collection in order to waste at least $750.00 of their resources trying to fill their coffers in this dubious profit-center they have going. Do your research on Dollar damage scams and you will see I am not alone in this. Detroit has been through enough in the last few decades and does not need Dollar perpetuating the stereotype that the city is bankrupt, morally and financially, and not worth anyone's time. read more
