First time renting with Dollar Car Rental. Worked out really well (like everything else with our Portland trip). I'm completely aware that car rental car companies are pretty much the same, with price being the most important factor. And the price can vary greatly based on the platform you use to book the order. Another important factor are the rewards gained (like it is for any other credit card purchase). And of course, they are out to make a buck, so incentivize their employees to upsell (insurance, prepay gas, accessories), along with adding on various mandatory surcharges (hidden amongst the myriad of government taxes and fees). So as of this moment, here are the rules I try to follow. -- It matters what platform one books it through. Selection of cars within a class doesn't really matter to me. Prices can vary. Some require prepayment while others pay at time of rental. Never use a third party company specializing in car rentals (e.g. wisecars). And will no longer use car sharing platforms like Turo: too risky. -- Always decline insurance (liability insurance is already included in price; comprehensive/collision can come from credit card used or your home auto insurance policy). Prebuying gas can save you money if you drive the car down to empty. I've learned that is something I no longer have any interest in doing. So now always look for a nearby Costco to fill up before returning. -- loyalty rewards tied to the rental car company itself is irrelevant. That's why rental car company points aren't even tracked as having any value, like airline miles or credit card company points are. In fact, some companies will tack on additional fees if you give them your airline frequent flyer number to get additional points. -- unless one must require a certain number of seats or feature (e.g. a minivan to seat 7, a convertible or 4x4 for Hawaii), getting a compact to intermediate works for us. And in many cases, they will upgrade you to a full size for free (cause that's what is available). -- Using the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card as the sole payment method because it provided PRIMARY car rental insurance. This is important for me since any damage to the rental car would be handled by Chase first, before your private insurance would.. Chase made a big change on the Sapphire Reserve card where rental car are now only 1% back (unless prepaid on the Chase Travel site, where it is 8% back). -- Reputable Sites to check (this is where a multi-tab, multi-screen set-up helps. No longer use Google) -- Costco Travel (Avis, Alamo, Budget, Enterprise) - 5% back (2% executive). Pay later. -- Delta Cars and Stays (uses the Expedia platform) - 2% back in miles, sometimes gives 1:1 MQDs. Pay later. -- Chase Travel - prepaid. 8% back. But have always found them to be more expensive, but would choose this if competitive. -- Citi Travel - 10% back, but would have to use different card. -- Kayak - just to see what it out there. Ended up booking with Delta, getting a compact for two days for $68. I don't remember the last time getting such a low rate. One thing that can make a big difference in your rental is how long one has to stand in line at the airport rental counter. We got lucky: it was a Saturday so not particularly busy but the Budget/Avis counter had a long line while the Dollar line next door was empty. Just had to present my Driver's License and credit card. Because I was new to Dollar, I went through the 'mandatory' questions: do you want to upgrade? are you sure? OK, I'll upgrade you for free anyway. do you want to buy insurance? do you want to prepay for gas? One thing they did not ask was about toll passes, which is another way they get you. I was given a small packet of papers and directed to take the escalators directly to the 3rd floor where the Dollar cars are located. From there, I was to find the Dollar booth where the attendant handed me the keys. We had gotten a Hybrid Corolla. We ended up driving a lot more for the two days than I intended, and getting 50+ mpg car when gas prices were so high was a big plus. And it felt right, driving it around the Columbia River Valley. Returning the car was easy, following the signs for Dollar into the main parking garage. This time, there was actually an attendant who took the keys from us, mentioned that we had forgotten something (thank you...they must be trained to do that), and gave us helpful directions on how to get to the terminal. A few hours later, the invoice came via email and the pricing was what was quoted. read more

They advertise 24/7 on the website but don't open for pick ups until 6am. Arrived at 3am, ready to get the car. Ended up waiting until 6:30 to pick up the car because the employed did not have a computer code? Then, the car I had booked was not available. Employee said I would have to purchase an upgrade because the car I had reserved was not cleaned yet. Couple of minutes later, the "upgrade" was now free. Except now with my lucky upgrade, the pre paid gas bill doubled. End of my trip now, I just called to ask about drop offs and the employee said to "fill out the back of the pamphlet" and "drop off the keys where I picked up the keys, in the box". I asked if the box was at the front desk, since I picked up the keys at the front desk. Employee then said the drop off box is "20 feet from the cars". I asked for him to be more specific on where "the box" was & the employee got frustrated, said I was making it "complicated". When I explained that I am asking for a marker to represent where the box will be, (for example "near the elevator") he got emotionally heightened and told me he was going to get a manager to repeat to me the "same exact steps he just told me" because "'there is nothing more to explain aside from "drop it off in a box 20 feet from the car'". When I park in the garage, how will "the box" be 20 feet from the car? There are hundreds of cars on the floor. Whole experience from pick up to drop off has been ridiculous. Disgusting brand representatives at PDX. Never booking again & never recommending. I called to make sure I did Dollar Car Rental's drop off procedures correctly, in order to ensure the safety of their vehicle key. Disappointing experience to end our vacation. On my recent visit to Portland, I rented a car from Dollar Car Rental at Portland International Airport. When I booked online, I chose a compact "unknown" vehicle because it was the cheapest option and fit my budget, so I wasn't sure what car I'd end up with. I was pleasantly surprised when they gave me a 2025 Toyota Corolla XSE. The car was clean, comfortable, and even had heated seats, which was perfect for the cold Portland weather. The pickup process was smooth, and the return process was quick and easy--completely hassle-free. Overall, it was a great experience and I'd definitely rent from Dollar again. read more

I rented from Dollar at Portland International Airport and was quoted $552.02 for a 3-day rental. The final charge was $735.74 -- nearly $200 more. I returned the vehicle 3 hours and 41 minutes late. Before returning, I spoke with a Dollar agent who told me late returns under 4 hours are charged at $6 per hour. Instead of following this, Dollar charged me for an entire additional rental day plus a full extra day of upgrade fees, insurance, and inflated taxes. When I challenged this, I was told "it doesn't matter what the agent said" and that the contract overrides everything. That's not customer service -- that's misleading behavior and refusal to take responsibility for their own staff's representations. If your employees are going to provide guidance, customers should not be punished for relying on it. Charging a full extra day for a sub-4-hour delay while ignoring your own stated policy is dishonest. I've escalated this through my credit card company and will be filing complaints with consumer protection agencies. Rent elsewhere unless you're comfortable being overcharged and stonewalled. read more

I'm generally VERY leery about renting from anyone other than the Enterprise/National/Alamo company (they are really expensive but really good) but...I gotta say... I was really impressed by Dollar! They had adequate staffing at the counter, which is a rarity for rental car agencies. I got upgraded to a Rav 4 which came in handy when the Portland snow storm struck. There was no line at the Dollar Car Rental, while there were other people in the car rental lines... now I know why. This rental spot is super expensive! I rented through Expedia, and the front counter employee will insist of you getting a more upgraded car and adding more unnecessary hidden fees and add ons. When I got here, they didn't have the specific car available that I chose online. And the protection/accidental fees are far more pricer than the other rental brands. Very impressed with Dollar Car Rental at PDX. They were very helpful from the time we picked up our rental car and when we brought it back. We've used Hertz in the past (Hertz actually saved us from the horrific Thrifty during our first trip to Oregon together), but I think we're going to start sticking with Dollar during future trips. We got there straight from the baggage claim and there was no line, unlike all the other rental car companies there. It was just the two of us and the entire process took less than 5-10 minutes. Our rental car was a 2024 Subaru Outback, which we picked up on 8/8/24 and returned on 8/13/24. We had to go to a separate area to pick up the keys, which was one escalator ride up but a bit of a long walk. My boyfriend had a little bit of trouble getting his phone's Bluetooth connected to the car at first, but otherwise we didn't have any other issues down the stretch. We drove this car to Lincoln City, where we stayed at, and the gas mileage was absolutely excellent. He loved this car so much that he wants this to be his next. I seem to have hit or miss experiences with rental car companies. I felt the need to write a review because the service from this one was great. Upon check-in the clerk tried to upsell us to a hybrid. We declined but upon getting the car, it was a hybrid. Not sure if that was her giving us a free upgrade or was it that they tried to get us to pay for something we were going to get anyways? We will never know. The car itself was great, new with low mileage. The thing with this location is that no one checks you out of the garage, and because of that we didn't realize until we were about 10 miles out of town that they didn't fill up the car. The cool thing is they do everything via text and we had already received a message to let them know if we needed anything. I texted them about the gas and the manager called me immediately and apologized profusely and gave us a couple options on how to handle it. When we dropped the car back off, everything was noted and there were no issues. So overall, I feel like they did an excellent job handling the issue and as such would use them again in the future read more

Very disappointed with Dollar Car Rental at PDX. We were given a car that had many issues. The seat belt sensors kept going off when nobody was sitting in the back. Also, steering wheel would shake very bad when breaking. I called to let them know what was happening. They didn't offer to bring out a new car. They said I could drive back to PDX, which was far from where I was staying. Or they said they would give a discount. When I returned the car, I explained the problems I had and the discount they gave was $42. What a joke! Do not rent from this place. Not safe, and bad customer service. My flight was very delayed, so when I arrived, they said the deal that I had was no longer valid (it was almost one in the morning, and they said the deal expired at midnight). Then I get the car, and there is no navigation set up in the car. Due to this, I could not even use my bluetooth in for the map. Wow! I was so pleasantly surprised by the vehicle and the customer service at the PDX Dollar Car Rental location I had to write a review. I have never used Dollar Car Rentals before and wasn't sure what to expect. My great experience started off at the Portland, Oregon rental counter. It was by far the shortest line among all of the rental agencies (which I had also read in previous reviews). I was given a free upgrade and choice of brand spankin' new vehicles. Then on my way out of the lot I mentioned that I was having difficulty connecting my phone to the navigation system. Luckily no one was waiting behind me, so Michelle was so sweet and gave me the assist I needed (talk about great customer service). Partway through my weeklong road trip a low tire alert went off. I went to check the pressure/refill it and gas station attendant noticed a valve stem cap was missing. He recommended I pick up a pack at a local store. When I returned the car I mentioned the experience to Annette. Not only was I reimbursed for the cost of the caps, but received a small gift card for my troubles. I can't say enough good things about my experience with this Portland team (bosses, are you listening!) and will definitely be renting through Dollar on my next trip!!! read more

I go to PDX all of the time and typically rent with a few other companies that I normally go to. However, I ended up with Dollar this time and I was pleasantly surprised. They have a much better fleet of cars than Hertz at this airport, which I did not know. The customer service rep was also professional, although he did have to ask me A LOT more questions than other places but this is the companies fault, not his. They have directed him to try to upsell you on all of the insurance and better cars. Just ignore that part and stand your ground. read more

My husband and I had a pretty good experience with Dollar Rental. The car rental agent that helped us was friendly, clear, and direct when communicating information to us. He also didn't try to upsell us. We thought we were getting a compact car, but as soon as we got to the garage and located our rental car, it turned out to be a Mid-Size 2021 Toyota Corolla, which was way better than what we thought we were going to get. Plus, the total cost for the week we had the rental was reasonable, especially for what we ended up with. It included unlimited mileage and we also chose to fill the tank up ourselves before returning the rental. As for the car, it was clean and spotless. Once we returned it back to the garage, the employees were there to assist as they waited till we cleared the car and removed all our belongings. My Father in-law has trouble walking, so thankfully the Dollar rental booth provided wheelchairs which came in handy! Overall, we had a good experience with Dollar Car Rental and will likely rent a car with them again once we return to PDX. read more

When we came to return our rental car, the lady who was checking the cars was EXTREMELY rude. We had to pass by another car being checked in order to park our car, then she walked in our way and squealed at us for almost hitting her. You got in our way When she later came to check our car, she rudely asked us if the keys were in the car, we said yeah and the car is still running. This bitch raised her voice at us saying "I KNOW IT'S RUNNING, BUT ARE THE KEYS IN THE CAR?" Their hours state they're open from 12:01am to midnight yet when I called customer service they said they don't open until 7am! Useless waiting around. Please note, even though this is "Dollar" you cannot return the car to a different "Dollar" location. I had a family emergency in Eugene, the time was extended but I was not able to return the vehicle to the Eugene airport. I had to drive back to Portland and find alternate transportation back to continue with the situation. I could have left it in Eugene for an additional $250. First issue: Don't expect decent customer service. Actually, don't expect ANY customer service. The front desk person didn't even bother to look up from his desk before snapping sharply at people that didn't have their card out before approaching. Every person in line was raising eyebrows and looking around at each other over how rude this employee was. It made for a very uncomfortable and still interaction. He was not friendly at all, which is fine. But he also wasn't willing to actually answer any questions or be helpful in anyway. When I asked where the vehicle would be, he simply said "It's outside. You'll find it." Great, thanks guy- super helpful. Second issue: I was charged for coverage I did not ask for or want. I said no at the counter, was told the charges shown were just the minimum charge for the rental and would later reflect the original quote. I said okay and signed. Later found out that was not true, they snuck non mandatory coverage into the bill, and lied about it. That doubled the price of my rental. Third issue: The vehicle was not a "mystery midsized vehicle" like I selected. It was a pick up truck. When I asked for something else, I got more attitude and offered a small sedan for a higher price. No thank you. Fourth issue: The vehicle was filthy! Dirt and grime all over, like it hadn't even been wiped down. There was something crusted onto the wheel, the cup holders had old dirt and grime build up, stains on the seats, dirty windshield, and dirt all over the floor and seats- especially in the back. There was even an old customer's rental agreement with all of their personal information in the glove box! We picked up the car late at night and noticed it all as soon as we had sunlight. Terribly noticeable. We immediately called and weren't told anything of substance, didn't receive any real help, and were directed to fill out a random form online. Great. This was even more concerning with COVID-19 going around. They clearly didn't bother to clean the vehicle, let alone sanitize it between use. Who knows what was lurking in that car? Disgusting. TL:DR - The price seems great at first but there are huge hidden charges, customer service is nonexistent, and the vehicle was filthy. Don't bother. read more

Renting cars seems to be something I do less and less often these days, with the advent of ride share and better public transportation in many areas. But sometimes a rental car is necessary, and I'm always grateful that businesses like this exist for those situations. We went with Dollar Car Rental because their price was reasonable (not the cheapest, but I prefer a reputable company versus one I've never heard of). It was relatively easy to get our contract taken care of and into a car. I was a little annoyed that they require a receipt upon return of the car proving that I filled the gas tank up within five miles of the airport. I've never heard of that before and found it to be petty. (Note-there are a couple gas stations along the frontage road by the airport, within five miles. They are not the easiest to get to, but it can be done. Don't prepay for a full tank if you don't anticipate using ever last drop of gas.) Our car was very clean, everything in working order and practically brand new. I felt like we got what we paid for and were happy with our experience. All except the weird gas thing. But maybe they are doing their part to keep Portland weird. Whatever. read more

I originally booked the rental with another rental company but cancelled and booked with Dollar Car Rental because they were $70 cheaper. However, I would recommend to look elsewhere. Dollar Car Rental nickels and dimes you for every single thing. An example is that they charge an addition $40 for an additional driver without telling you. Our gas tank was also 3/4 full when we received it. With the other rental places, you only have to return it with the same amount of gas. So when we returned it, we even put more gas than when we got it but they still ended up charging us because it wasn't a "full tank." I had to call to dispute the charges. I was able to get refunded for the additional driver and additional gas charge. Overall, save yourself the headache and do yourself a favor and do a hard pass on this rental place. read more

Beware. I turned in a car to Dollar at Portland Airport this last July. It was in perfect condition - I did not wreck it or run into anything. However, I made one terrible mistake. My son and I were running late to our plane so the attendant encouraged us to run along, so I didn't take my own photos of the car before leaving. A month later I received a threatening letter with a bill from a repair shop for approximately $1500. They are claiming they had to repair the bumper and grille of the car and sent me some terrible, dark photos of the car (I could not make out the damage on the car). I have tried to reason with them and it is to no avail. I encourage anyone to use another rental company. I will also be posting elsewhere and contacting the Better Business Bureau. read more

I liked that I didn't have to shuttle off somewhere to get my rental and was able to just walk out and get it at the airport. Reserved a Car through Hertz at the Portland Airport for a 5 day trip. When we got to the counter, they were sold out with 15 people ahead of us for waiting for cars. They suggested that Dollar Rental had cars and we could cancel and check there. Oh yes, Dollar has rental cars, but they were gouging customers to get one. Either wait 2-4 hours for a car or pay their price. A Camry for 5 days was $1447. That is about 3 times more that what our reservation was for and 3 times more than renting a Full Size car from Dollar and other day! Oh and BTW Dollar and Hertz are the same company! Interesting all other rental companies except Dollar were out of extra cars, they only had cars for their customers who had reservations. Novel Idea! Traveling is stressful enough these days, who needs the extra stress of dealing with a untrustworthy company like Dollar that takes advantage of customers to make some extra profit in these situations. DO NOT TRUST them and I do not recommend booking with them at this location or any Dollar location. read more

I was glad I chose Dollar when I saw there was no line. Now I know why so many people had chosen another company. The agent was a master up-seller. She scared me into purchasing additional insurance that more than doubled my daily rate. Her reason: Unlike California, Oregon doesn't have no-fault insurance, so if there was any damage to the car, I would pay the daily rate for every day the car was in the repair shop. It could take a month, she added. On top of that, she shoved the keys for a different (larger) car into my hand after I had told her I wanted to stick to my original choice. Landed in PDX and walked to the rental car counter. "Oh, no!" I thought as I soon witnessed CRAZY LONG lines at "the other guys." Then I noticed in the Dollar line there was no one. "Thank God I don't have to wait 90 minutes to get my car!" But then I thought, "yeah, but it's Dollar... what are they going to give me, some left-over Buick or maybe an Astrovan? Wrong again!
