*** !!! WATCH OUT FOR SIXT CAR SCANNER HERE - TAKE VIDEOS BEFORE AND AFTER CAR RETURN!!! *** If you feel that you have been wronged in the state of Oregon (not all cases are same, just for your reference) FORMAL COMPLAINTS can be filed here: https://justice.oregon.gov/consumercomplaints Complaints go directly to Oregon DoJ - use judiciously. DISCLAIMER: I had loved SIXT since my travel to Hawaii 5 years ago. I will defend this company as long as I can, but I have SEVERE RESERVATIONS FOR THIS LOCATION and the new business practices of Sixt. Please read below my updates of my disputes with SIXT, who claims the damage was caused by me but have not yet provided a "before" picture proving the damage has occurred during the trip. *** UPDATE1: SIXT CHARGED 1003$ - MY ADVICE - TAKE *MULTIPLE* WALK-AROUND VIDEOS. SEE PICTURE FOR THE CLAIMED DAMAGE. UPDATE2: I HAVE FILED THE CLAIM WITH MY CREDIT CARD - PAY WITH COVERED CREDIT CARD IF YOU NEED TO USE THIS PARTICULAR SIXT. UPDATE3: I AM CURRENTLY AWAITING FOR THEIR "BEFORE" PICTURES FOR DEFINITIVE EVIDENCE I ACTUALLY CAUSED THE DAMAGE, INSTEAD OF IT BEING PRESENT PRIOR TO MY RENTAL. *** This Sixt location and their image-based damage detection system is potentially quite lethal for your wallet, and you will be rushed out by the workers without proper walk-around. **Stand your ground firm and take videos of the car.** When you exit Sixt, a scanner takes pictures of your car, detecting warping on vertical lines for damages. As of September, Sixt has charged me 1003$ for the damages with "dent of 3cm or more" based on a scanner image (see below). My while my evidence has been weak, however the charge is to exchange the entire Front Bumper and Grill. See the picture damages for why the whole assembly is requested to be replaced. Sixt has not responded to my request for picture evidence of "before" my rental began. I waited until the last second for their formal response, but I am unfortunately forced to claim this with my credit company. **Do not use this Sixt if you are uncomfortable they will find and charge you for anything minor**. Yelp has alternative reviews for your reference for more detail, appears to be more true-to-life experience.

Paw prints on the back seat

If the price looks too good to be true it probably is! Once you're at the counter to pick up the car it turns into polite threatening in order to accept all the extra charges that are upwards of $300 or face not being able to make your return trip if they think something is wrong with the vehicle you returned. Plus another $200 deposit that is on hold on your credit card. The vehicle was filthy, old nuts and animal paw prints in the backseat, appeared electrical issues causing the hatchback to open randomly I would never use this place again I'll stick with Enterprise. And my only options were big SUVs which I had trouble getting my elderly parent into even though I had reserved a car.

My approach with rental cars is no different than airlines: become part of frequent user and reap the benefits (#1). Not too long ago, I diverted from this approach and rolled with SIXT since they were the cheapest rental I could find during a demanding holiday weekend. Because they're new to the US market, I was intrigued to see what it was all about. Warning: This did not end well. To start, it was a lot of waiting. Waiting in line and waiting for a car. I understand the holiday patron traffic was high but doing this made me miss my status with Hertz and National since I could just choose a car from the lot and be done with it. Customer service agents were a little on the slow side, but eventually I was assigned an economy car and I was off to the lot. PDX is still going through a lot of changes and the SIXT lot is not exactly close to the rental car center. Dragging an inordinate amount of luggage, it was already somewhat taxing just making it there. The attendants seemed clueless on the lot but after some waiting around for the car to be washed, they finally got me the vehicle that I was assigned. Then I noticed the car wasn't all that clean. This was a rushed job and I let them know there were still crumbs in the backseat + trunk and the smell coming from the vents was not ideal. After another round of making sure things were clean as promised just as I would have to promise to keep it in good condition. The car drove fine. I didn't love their fleet of vehicles as much as other rental car companies but I was just happy to have something for the weekend. Unless I find myself in Europe and driving at some point, I don't think I'm going to be driving SIXT in the near future. ___________ (#1) Does this sound familiar, Yelpers? #Elite

Had a great experience at this location. Italy at the front desk made the check in process smoothly! She was very helpful and had a wonderful personality. Told her I was in town for my cousin's wedding and she gave me a complimentary upgrade! The return process was also seamless. When I'm back in town, would love to rent from them again!

Overall experience: 5 Customer Service: 5 Affordability: 5 Location: 5 We rented a vehicle from SIXT rent a car at the Portland international Airport this past weekend. We had made our reservations weeks in advance, so when we arrived the check in process seamless. Our car was clean and well kept, appreciate this company not renting old vehicles worn out. All the staff that we encountered were very friendly and professional. The vehicle was very clean and well maintained to the highest standard. When we returned to the airport it was very early in the morning, but they have a key drop for passengers with early morning flights. Thanks, I'm sure we will rent here again! @glampedlife

Upon arrival I struggled a bit to find my way through the terminal to car rental zone, that was going a level down from main terminal, then walking across a passage and then taking elevator to the third floor. When I got the my designated spot, I noticed I got a luxury class car assigned, due to free double upgrade. I went to the nearby window to request a regular SUV and the agent assigned me a Jeep within few seconds. It was a smooth friendly service. Also the pick up area was super nice, one of cleanest and brightest Avis lot that I had seen. We used the car for 3 days, driving over 100 miles around Portland, without any issues. The interior was super clean. All functionalities inside car like A/C, USB port, radio worked perfectly fine. For drop off, it was easy to follow the Rental Return sign to take the car to designated area. Upon exiting the car, an agent processed the return on the spot and sent the receipt to my email. Again, it was a fast convenient service. Overall I was really happy with another fantastic Avis rental experience for a very reasonable price.

Drop-off was a breeze too, since Alamo's return area is right in the beginning of the renta-a-car place and you don't have to drive all the way in like the other car places. Ended up waiting until 6:30 to pick up the car because the employed did not have a computer code? Then, the car I had booked was not available. Employee said I would have to purchase an upgrade because the car I had reserved was not cleaned yet. Couple of minutes later, the "upgrade" was now free. Except now with my lucky upgrade, the pre paid gas bill doubled. End of my trip now, I just called to ask about drop offs and the employee said to "fill out the back of the pamphlet" and "drop off the keys where I picked up the keys, in the box". I asked if the box was at the front desk, since I picked up the keys at the front desk. Employee then said the drop off box is "20 feet from the cars". I asked for him to be more specific on where "the box" was & the employee got frustrated, said I was making it "complicated". When I explained that I am asking for a marker to represent where the box will be, (for example "near the elevator") he got emotionally heightened and told me he was going to get a manager to repeat to me the "same exact steps he just told me" because "'there is nothing more to explain aside from "drop it off in a box 20 feet from the car'". When I park in the garage, how will "the box" be 20 feet from the car? There are hundreds of cars on the floor. Whole experience from pick up to drop off has been ridiculous. Disgusting brand representatives at PDX. Never booking again & never recommending. I called to make sure I did Dollar Car Rental's drop off procedures correctly, in order to ensure the safety of their vehicle key. Disappointing experience to end our vacation. Hopefully I find "the box".

First time renting with Dollar Car Rental. Worked out really well (like everything else with our…read morePortland trip). I'm completely aware that car rental car companies are pretty much the same, with price being the most important factor. And the price can vary greatly based on the platform you use to book the order. Another important factor are the rewards gained (like it is for any other credit card purchase). And of course, they are out to make a buck, so incentivize their employees to upsell (insurance, prepay gas, accessories), along with adding on various mandatory surcharges (hidden amongst the myriad of government taxes and fees). So as of this moment, here are the rules I try to follow. -- It matters what platform one books it through. Selection of cars within a class doesn't really matter to me. Prices can vary. Some require prepayment while others pay at time of rental. Never use a third party company specializing in car rentals (e.g. wisecars). And will no longer use car sharing platforms like Turo: too risky. -- Always decline insurance (liability insurance is already included in price; comprehensive/collision can come from credit card used or your home auto insurance policy). Prebuying gas can save you money if you drive the car down to empty. I've learned that is something I no longer have any interest in doing. So now always look for a nearby Costco to fill up before returning. -- loyalty rewards tied to the rental car company itself is irrelevant. That's why rental car company points aren't even tracked as having any value, like airline miles or credit card company points are. In fact, some companies will tack on additional fees if you give them your airline frequent flyer number to get additional points. -- unless one must require a certain number of seats or feature (e.g. a minivan to seat 7, a convertible or 4x4 for Hawaii), getting a compact to intermediate works for us. And in many cases, they will upgrade you to a full size for free (cause that's what is available). -- Using the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card as the sole payment method because it provided PRIMARY car rental insurance. This is important for me since any damage to the rental car would be handled by Chase first, before your private insurance would.. Chase made a big change on the Sapphire Reserve card where rental car are now only 1% back (unless prepaid on the Chase Travel site, where it is 8% back). -- Reputable Sites to check (this is where a multi-tab, multi-screen set-up helps. No longer use Google) -- Costco Travel (Avis, Alamo, Budget, Enterprise) - 5% back (2% executive). Pay later. -- Delta Cars and Stays (uses the Expedia platform) - 2% back in miles, sometimes gives 1:1 MQDs. Pay later. -- Chase Travel - prepaid. 8% back. But have always found them to be more expensive, but would choose this if competitive. -- Citi Travel - 10% back, but would have to use different card. -- Kayak - just to see what it out there. Ended up booking with Delta, getting a compact for two days for $68. I don't remember the last time getting such a low rate. One thing that can make a big difference in your rental is how long one has to stand in line at the airport rental counter. We got lucky: it was a Saturday so not particularly busy but the Budget/Avis counter had a long line while the Dollar line next door was empty. Just had to present my Driver's License and credit card. Because I was new to Dollar, I went through the 'mandatory' questions: do you want to upgrade? are you sure? OK, I'll upgrade you for free anyway. do you want to buy insurance? do you want to prepay for gas? One thing they did not ask was about toll passes, which is another way they get you. I was given a small packet of papers and directed to take the escalators directly to the 3rd floor where the Dollar cars are located. From there, I was to find the Dollar booth where the attendant handed me the keys. We had gotten a Hybrid Corolla. We ended up driving a lot more for the two days than I intended, and getting 50+ mpg car when gas prices were so high was a big plus. And it felt right, driving it around the Columbia River Valley. Returning the car was easy, following the signs for Dollar into the main parking garage. This time, there was actually an attendant who took the keys from us, mentioned that we had forgotten something (thank you...they must be trained to do that), and gave us helpful directions on how to get to the terminal. A few hours later, the invoice came via email and the pricing was what was quoted.

Despite Thrifty's clear commitment, I was told by their employee that there were no cars available--not even in a different category. No help was offered, no alternatives were provided, and she simply told me to "try Dollar," which is owned by the same parent company. The only vehicle left at Dollar cost more than twice what I had originally reserved--$1,560.29 vs. $760.91. I had no choice but to accept it or be stranded overnight and miss the wedding I flew to Oregon to attend. The counter was minutes from closing and there was no time to escalate or troubleshoot. What's worse is that Thrifty never disclosed that a "confirmed" reservation could be canceled due to availability. Their policy specifically implies the opposite. If I hadn't followed their instructions and checked in early, or if I hadn't had the means to cover an unexpected $800+ increase, I would have been left in a truly awful situation. This wasn't a simple inconvenience--it was a serious failure to honor written commitments and borderline monopolistic given that they are owned by the same parent company. That's because places like Budget rent-a-car have let me rent vehicles in the past by just letting them place a $250 hold on funds in my account, in addition to prepaying my rental. Except this time. For some reason (I think because it's been so long since I had a credit card, that my rating is low now due to no recent credit history) they denied my ability to rent from them. But not until I had already made the reservation and prepaid the charges, weeks before. When I showed up to the rental counter (the day before my family and I were to leave for Disneyland) Budget told us no go! Ugh. Our little 2004 Kia Rio is fine for the occasional grocery shopping trip around town but with no AC, manual steering and some pretty uncomfortable seats, we really didn't want to take our chances in the heat on the grapevine driving down to Cali. We were so distraught and trying to brainstorm options (like asking a friend to take the risk of renting it in their name and letting us use it for the trip -- something we REALLY didn't want to do.) That's when the girls at the Budget counter told us about Steve from Crown Auto Rental. They gave us his number and even encouraged us to call him from their phone (I think they felt sorry for our little one, sitting dejected in the corner of their lobby.) We called Steve and he happened to be close by. He quickly crunched some numbers and came up with several options for us for our trip, no credit card needed. Steve picked us up from Budget and took us back to his office on 105th and NE Sandy. He offered us a mini-van and a Taurus, for just a couple hundred more than our pre-paid Budget reservation (still $200 less than a last minute Budget res at the same time.) He took a $150 hold on funds (instead of Budget's $250) as a deposit on the car and he let us take it out of state (an exception he doesn't normally make.) Basically, Steve and Norma saved our whole vacation (and we hadn't had one in 8 years!) the car was great, ran well and got us to and from our destination in one piece and we didn't have to run around awkwardly asking our friends to put their financial livelihoods on the line for our vacation. These are good people -- with good intentions and a smart business model and I highly recommend them to anyone who has trouble renting from a traditional car company or anyone who likes to support a local business with a heart. I know Crown will be our first call the next time we need a car. I can't say enough good stuff. *Oh! and they promptly refunded the $150 hold once we returned the car in good condition. Awesome experience all around.
