Once you're at the counter to pick up the car it turns into polite threatening in order to accept all the extra charges that are upwards of $300 or face not being able to make your return trip if they think something is wrong with the vehicle you returned. Plus another $200 deposit that is on hold on your credit card. The vehicle was filthy, old nuts and animal paw prints in the backseat, appeared electrical issues causing the hatchback to open randomly I would never use this place again I'll stick with Enterprise. I had a horrible experience with SIXT, vehicle had a significant vibration at all speeds with no available spare tire. The car was clean inside and out with no visual damage. I was just below being full and was charged close to 90 for low fuel at over $14 per gallon x minimum surcharge. I also left a drill in the vehicle and asked if my cousin could pick it up which disappeared when my cousin called to pick it up. I questioned the integrity of the people and the company given my experience. I returned the vehicle without damage and fairly clean. They also have Ai scanners to flag for any damage coming and going just make it clear. I felt like they design their business model on up charging. We rented a Volvo XC40 from Sixt Rent A Car from October 10-13, 2025, and returned it in perfect condition. No one at the return desk mentioned any issues, and I received no inspection report or photos at drop-off. Weeks later, I got a letter from Sixt's claims department demanding $566 for supposed damage they say occurred during my rental. They provided photos of the vehicle but no time-stamped proof the damage happened while I had it, and no pre-rental photos showing the car's condition when I picked it up. There is simply no evidence connecting me to this damage. After researching Sixt, I discovered thousands of similar complaints from other renters across the U.S. and Europe -- all describing nearly identical experiences: post-rental "damage" claims, missing pre-rental documentation, and aggressive collection attempts. This appears to be a widespread and deceptive business practice, not an isolated error. I have filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau, the Nevada and Florida Attorneys General, the Oregon Department of Justice, and the Federal Trade Commission. Consumers deserve transparency and honesty, not post-rental surprises backed by unverified photos. If you rent from Sixt, take extensive photos and video before and after, and keep every record. My approach with rental cars is no different than airlines: become part of frequent user and reap the benefits (#1). Not too long ago, I diverted from this approach and rolled with SIXT since they were the cheapest rental I could find during a demanding holiday weekend. Because they're new to the US market, I was intrigued to see what it was all about. Warning: This did not end well. To start, it was a lot of waiting. Waiting in line and waiting for a car. I understand the holiday patron traffic was high but doing this made me miss my status with Hertz and National since I could just choose a car from the lot and be done with it. Customer service agents were a little on the slow side, but eventually I was assigned an economy car and I was off to the lot. PDX is still going through a lot of changes and the SIXT lot is not exactly close to the rental car center. Dragging an inordinate amount of luggage, it was already somewhat taxing just making it there. The attendants seemed clueless on the lot but after some waiting around for the car to be washed, they finally got me the vehicle that I was assigned. Then I noticed the car wasn't all that clean. This was a rushed job and I let them know there were still crumbs in the backseat + trunk and the smell coming from the vents was not ideal. After another round of making sure things were clean as promised just as I would have to promise to keep it in good condition. The car drove fine. I didn't love their fleet of vehicles as much as other rental car companies but I was just happy to have something for the weekend. I rented from SIXT (San Francisco Portland, Aug-Sept 2025). A few days after returning the car, they sent me a bill for scratches I don't believe I caused. The biggest issue: they could not provide any proof the damage wasn't already there before my rental. I asked multiple times for pre-rental photos/scans of the same area, and they told me they couldn't provide them. Timeline: Returned the car in Portland went through their scanner, employee said everything looked fine. A few days later received a damage claim with scan images. I requested pre-rental documentation no response for ~4 months. In January they followed up demanding payment, still without prior scans. They also added pressure about fees and possible collections, despite the long delay on their end. The return process felt rushed (cars lined up behind me, quick handoff), which made it easy to skip taking photos. In hindsight, don't rely on verbal confirmation--document everything yourself. After this experience, I looked into it and saw similar complaints from other customers about post-rental damage charges, which makes me think this may not be a one-off. Advice: Rent somewhere else. Failing that, take detailed photos and video at pickup and return, no matter what. I've rented from many companies and never had an issue like this before--I won't use SIXT again. read more

I will never rent with SIXT again. This was my first time and only time. Pick up was fine via app. I checked with the counter to make sure no issues since it was a bit glitchy, but she mentioned to go straight to the attendant. Picked up a silver camry. Car visually looked fine to me. I've rented mainly Avis in the past, and their cars are definitely more busted then the one I picked up. I also received an email on pick up that mentioned a lot of the dents and issues that were pre-existing. With the lighting not that great either, I didn't notice anything worth taking a picture of. Car upon pick up also had a weird odor. Subtle hints like a wet sock, musty smell. Return was terrible. If you have a flight before they open, you awkwardly block traffic and park your car outside their gate and drop keys off. Very bizarre. A few days later a damage inquiry to the car. I was in dismay, since this was the smoothest and least amount I've driven the car. When I opened the damage report, they called out damages that were already notated in the initial email on pick up. Exact verbiage as well saying I damaged the front bumper on the passenger side. I called their customer service and probably wasted an hour getting transferred back and forth. I filled out an online form clearing showing the same damages on the vehicle before I even picked up. After awhile, there was no response so I followed up again and finally got routed to their claims department where they said it was cleared up. I asked for an explanation of how the staff their checking the return didn't check prior damages and I got notified, and customer service did not have a response. Never renting SIXT again. I read the reviews, figured it can't be that bad (but bought the rental car insurance just in case) and rented a car our of PDX for my wife and me. Things happened and I was unable to travel, but my wife still could, so I tried to change the name of the person receiving the car at PDX from mine to hers. As I had a nonrefundable agreement, I was told the change was not allowable. Please note: I was not cancelling the reservation, nor was I changing the vehicle, or rental period, or pick up/drop off days or times...even the credit card was the same. I wanted to change the name of the person picking up the car. That's it. Customer service is an (unfunny) joke. According to "Sebastian," one of the representatives I spoke with, he has no supervisor and there is no one to whom a dissatisfied customer can make an appeal. There is no hierarchy. Right on! Power to the people! As if. Rather than attempting to resolve issues, Sixt is content to make their customer service reps recite their script and say "there's nothing I can do. I am not able to make any changes. There is no one here who can make any changes." Ad infinitum. I cut our losses and cancelled the car. It cost us $100 for the cancellation fee; but it also cost Sixt approximately $250 for the cancellation, because they refused to change the name on the reservation. Smart business move, huh? You've been warned. Do NOT rent a car from Sixt. Do as I say, not as I did. Lastly, you Portlandians might want to look into the grip Sixt has on PDX. Monica Pettigrove (manager) racially discriminated my boyfriend and refused to provide service over a small indentation on his drivers license. He provided his drivers license, an international drivers permit, as well as a passport to validate his identification. All other workers were amicable and had a willingness to help, however Monica refused to service him and prohibited others from doing so. She was volatile, condescending and completely unprofessional. Thankfully he was able to book with another car rental without an issue immediately after. The images show no damage, but they are trying to claim the slighting warp of light reflecting off the bumper as "damage." Their model is clearly a scam. I've never seen such unprofessional, racist employees. Sunday the 21st at approximately 4-430. We returned our car and was waiting for the shuttle to LAX it was very noisy when I approached the doors to the small bus. I tried to tell the driver that I couldn't hear her. We went back and forth and instead of standing up and walking that 3 feet so I could hear her. She just decided to scream LOUDLY. So when she opens the door she was just glaring at me. It escalated when she passed our stop and she then lied and said she had told a passenger she was stopping at 5-6. But, you didn't say it to anyone else! My friend who is Asian also told her that she hadn't. So..... this employee says "you need to go back where you came from". Racist!! I pray the bus has cameras and microphone. While our flight part of our United Airlns package was excellent, the car rental part of it was a disaster with Thrifty at PDX airport. Sixt saved the day! The first thing hubs asked these folks at the counter was, "do you have cars available?" A big, 'yes' is what we heard. Even the woman car agent working behind the counter was all smiles as she spoke to her customers. But it was the brother helping us who went out of his way to save the day some more. He was soft-spoken but extremely confident and passionate about providing excellent service. By the time we got to the parking lot, our sedan's trunk was already popped open and ready for our carry-ons, AC on full blast- which took care of Portland's humidity and the park attendant, was all smiles and welcoming. Don't use this company to rent a car. We rented with them in July to attend a wedding in Hood River. We had to cross the bridge and it would not allow us to pay for the tolls at the time. We received a copy of the inv sent to Sixt in the amount of 28.00 for the tolls, they charg a $40.00 admin fee as well. Well actually they charged my credit card 40.00 per 3.50 toll to the amount of 300.00. they said they could give me a courtesy credit for 20.00 but could not bill the tolls together as stated on the invoice they received. We need to be careful when we return the car. If the returning inspector asks you to sign, it is not just signing for check-out. It can be an agreement of car damage which we did not make. Please read the above section of what you are signing. If you want to rent a car, it is safer to get insurance ( cover the car ) for $35/day because they can claim later any damage or scratch which we don't know. I think it could be a scam but we can not prove it after returning the car. For this reason, it is also a wise idea to take many photos of the car from different angles before driving out and in. They usually charge $400 - $480 for a scratch not covered by your insurance because of the deductible. I had an extremely negative experience with Sixt at Portland International Airport. I reserved and prepaid for a BMW X7. When I arrived at the Portland airport, I was told that the vehicle I had prepaid for was not available. Instead, I would receive a BMW X5, a smaller and less expensive vehicle. I was told that the X5 was about $50 per day cheaper. I was told that I would also receive a 20% discount off the price of the X5. Lastly, I was told that someone from Sixt would follow up with me the following day to confirm these details. Since it was late at night, it had been a long day of travel, and I had two (very tired) small children with me, I accepted what I was told by the agent at the desk and took the X5. No one from Sixt followed up with me the next day as promised. Or the following day. On the third day, I called the number given to me for the Sixt Portland airport location. After ringing for a while, it went to voice mail. I left a voice mail with my name and number. No one ever called me back. A few days later, I returned the vehicle. At the return, I was told I would be given a credit of about $50 per day, which is the price difference between the X7 and the X5. I said that was not correct: I was supposed to receive an additional discount of 20% because I had prepaid for an X7. A $50 per day credit is merely the normal price of the X5; that is, it is no discount at all. That's just charging me the normal price for the vehicle I received. Again I was told someone would follow up with me. A few days later, I got an email saying the same thing. I was going to be charged the normal price for the X5, and I would not receive any additional discount, despite prepaying for an X7. I again responded that that was not correct because I was told when I picked up the vehicle that I would be given a 20% discount off the price of the X5. I never received a response to that email. Needless to say, I would rate every aspect of this experience as very poor. In the past, I have consistently rented top-of-the-line vehicles from Sixt. BE WARNED! I was charged a $40 Dollar Administration Fee for a $3.50 toll charge months after my rental period. I inquired about the charge and the response from SIXT was that there is no way for me to pay the toll direct, it is charged by video of the license plate. They don't charge your card on file the toll amount due to their inability to have an agreement with the toll authority. Then they charge you $40 dollars as an administrative fee. They didn't even find it when they "cleaned" the car out but luckily the next renters did & were honest enough to return the wallet to the branch when they returned the car. Christina reached out to inform us they had the wallet & said to pick up anytime after 5pm on July 31st. We called back immediately & at least a dozen more times with no answer & mostly no voicemails. The one voicemail we did get we informed them that we're not local & asked if they could mail it to us. Just the process of filling out the form to originally report the item was insanity with bad links, various steps & way too difficult of a process. I've been in communication with the supposed Lost & Found dept on their Facebook messenger since August 5th with them "AI" but they insist they're human with promises that they would reach out to the branch and thanking me for my patience. Yet it's now Aug 20th & I still haven't heard anything from the branch nor do I have my wallet. It shouldn't be this difficult! Just rented a car here for the weekend on a trip to care for a sick family member on a deal through Expedia. Will never make the same mistake again. I have included in my review the initial rental documents when I picked up the car - including that their own employee noted a 10 cm scratch down to the primer on the driver side door. Today, 12/09/2024 I modified the pick up time to 2 hours ahead just to be sure I would give myself enough wiggle room if my flight was delayed. When I refreshed my screen the price more than doubled the original amount! I immediately called SIXT to find out what happened. Turns out, if you modify your rental, even just to adjust the pick up time, your quoted price will be different. There was no reason given to me other than " you modified your reservation". Worked here for shoetly. However I didn't have a scammer personality. I watched customers arrive here for a funeral booking, a full-size car and the management would still push them for upgrades. Some of these people were senior citizens. It was really sad to watch they make money on every little purchase they try to get you to upgrade on the people at that counter live on commission as they only make about $18 an hour but the good salespeople are making well over $100,000 a year so push for a upgrades heavy. NEVER get scammed by these people. There is NO bundle they make it up. There is no airline discount or any other discount When they say that to you, they're just clicking keys on the screen and actually "Acting" it's really sad to watch actually and amazing how it's legal.
