DOLLAR CAR RENTAL IS MAKING A COMEBACK I frequently rent from Dollar about once a month month ranging 3-7 days. Last week I rented a 2025 Volkswagen Atlas from Dollar Car Rental and let me just say, it was da bomb! The booking process was seamless, the staff were friendly and efficient, and they had me on the road in no time. Sure there was an upsell but not a pressure sale. Return was fluid and easy. Not even a year ago many of the Dollar employees at this location should have been fired. I don't see them. It doesn't mean they've been fired. They may have been transferred but thank goodness they are no longer at the San Diego airport location. As for the Atlas itself--wow! Spacious, smooth, and packed with features that made every drive feel like a premium experience. Whether cruising on the highway or navigating city streets, it handled like a dream. The interior comfort and modern tech sealed the deal for me. Like inclusive phone charger, contour heated seats, built-in back window shades, and obviously electric everything. What really did it for me is that I'm 5'4 and I could see over the hood with no problema. Though I have a Class B license, riding in this SUV felt like driving a standard car. So much space no matter what your height. Even "Andre the Giant" would be comfy. And it's quick. I had the sports edition and hugging the mountain curves was a beauty. Big shoutout to Dollar for offering such an awesome ride. If you're looking for a rental that's both practical and fun, the Volkswagen Atlas is where it's at. Highly recommend! Three tips for best prices. 1. Reserve online 9 PM or later but before 7 AM. After you book, check again in two days and the rates will be lower and they'll honor it. (I use Expedia). 2. It's cheaper to rent a week instead of 4 days. You can turn the car in early without a penalty because it's cheaper to rent a week than 4 days. 3. "Rented from Dollar Rent A Car (San Diego) under Hertz ownership. I have to say, the counter staff at the San Diego location were fantastic--helpful and friendly. However, the post-rental billing process was a nightmare. I was wrongly charged a $31.21 'Fuel & Service Fee' despite filling the tank before return. The most alarming part? Their own internal records contradicted themselves. My initial downloaded statement showed fuel levels at 98% at pickup and 98% at return. Yet, when I disputed this with proof, their denial letter claimed the car was returned at only 89% and picked up at 100%. They cannot seem to keep their own data straight. I provided a receipt showing I added 2.6 gallons right before return, covering the 51 miles driven. Despite clear evidence and a discrepancy in their own system logs, they refused to correct the error. I am now forced to escalate this dispute through my own administrative channels and payment processor to recover the funds. Great local team, but be wary of the automated billing system. After my flight landed, there was a detour to the car rental shuttle pickup curb at the airport with clear paper signs leading the way, and a 10-12 minute delay while I sat in the shuttle as they waited for it to fill up. Another 12 minutes for the ride to the rental car center, but luckily no wait for service at the Dollar counter (no customers around after 9pm) and it took only 5 minutes before I received the instructions to access my rental vehicle (prepaid with no extras at pickup time). Returning the car was simple, just follow the signs, leave the keys in the car, and head straight to the airport shuttle (no interaction with staff needed). Receipt was emailed to me shortly after. I reserved a standard sized car from Dollar Car Rental and that's exactly what I got, reliable and sufficient. For the past couple of times that I have needed an automobile while back home in San Diego, I have gone to Dollar Car Rental. For the reasons below, they have proven to be a good choice every time. Online booking is straight forward with no hidden fees. In fact, our final bill from our most recent rental from November 29 to December 4, 2024 came out to be a little less than the original quote. No complaints about that. Prices are also reasonable. Although this airport location isn't actually onsite, per se, they are only about a seven-minute shuttle ride away. The office where the check-in counter is at is consistently clean and very tidy. Check-in and pick-up of the cars are quick and easy. The front counter staff do not try to pressure you into purchasing extras like insurance, prepaid gas, etc. Total time at the counter is about ten minutes. Checking the car and pick-up takes about the same amount of time. The vehicles are well cleaned and have few defects (minor scuffs, paint chips, and an occasional missing part that doesn't affect functionality). The automobiles are reliable and easy to drive. Drop-off is also easy peasy. No complaints, really! Dollar might just be our go-to car rental place every time we are home in San Diego. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!! The girl at the counter ran a pre-authorization on our credit card for $722 for an SUV. It was approved then she cancelled the transaction. (not sure why.. she said there was a problem with her equipment) We only have one credit card with $1000 limit for the sole purpose of rental cars during travel. When she tried to run the transaction again, it was declined because it then went over the limit. We called our bank and they said Hertz/Dollar needed to release the pre-authorization. Hertz/Dollar said they could not do that. I called Hertz/Dolkar customer service and after an hour and a half, they could NOT fix their mistake. I understand that mistakes happen, that's not the issue. But when a company cannot fix their mistakes, that is an issue . We were STRANDED with no car and it wasn't our fault! read more

Original vehicle I was renting had an oil light come on the second I started it. So I got a different vehicle. Had to open a case number for the new vehicle and called twice about it during my four days of renting it. Many, many problems occurred. When I got home I noticed I was charged over $200 for a warranty and road side services I never agreed upon or asked for. It's been over a week and I'm still waiting for my refund. The Dollar tried to steal $326.98 in addition to what what originally charged for a seven days rental. The fake fee included some "10 days" trip, "tools rental" and some other crap which I never requested. In addition they never sent the final receipt, trying to hide stealing $326.98 on top of the original $205.24, so I had to call the bastards multiple times trying to find out how come they charged me extra hundreds dollars. Well Date of Visit : 12-17-2023 and we came here for a rental car and walked all around but it was hard to find help !! And parking of your own vehicle was kind of hard also !! Just waiting and Waiting to get our car !! It's such a pain !! They should hire more workers to help to speed up the process !! It is located in the San Diego international Airport and the service needs big improvement !! Well prepare to wait !! My overall experience is not so good but the process was a long haul and the prices were decent but it sure shows in the service !! The worst customer service ever, we along with 30 other customers booked our car rental with this company to be told upon arrival from the airport that no vehicles were available at this location. It was midnight, for goodness sake. Their manager failed to provide any customer support nor confirmation of their failure to render a service. Bait and switch company. I rented through Priceline and the at the counter they asked my purpose. I told them family emergency. My ex husband had died and I had to get my minor children as they had been with their dad at the time. The company took advantage of my grief and charged me an additional $900 in fees after I specifically told them I just wanted to prepay gas and the cc hold. Dropped off a car I had rented from LAX to this location and immediately realized my wife's AirPod was left in the vehicle. I immediately tried to contact someone about coming back to retrieve the AirPod and was told to file a report online which I did. My wife works down the street from this location and decided to stop by and ask if she could retrieve her AirPod from the vehicle as she was actively viewing the location of it on her phone in front of the lady at the counter. Lady at counter was pretty rude and had an attitude the whole time and even made a comment about how AirPods aren't expensive and that she couldn't do anything to help her. Regardless they didn't do anything to help the situation and denied a request for an escort to search the vehicle which was literally 100 feet away from where they were speaking. Needless to say the AirPod never moved locations for two days on our gps until it finally lost battery. Weeks went by and dollar said they were unable to locate the AirPod. One star for rude worker and literally not letting us retrieve it steps away from the counter. read more

Having safe vehicles without damages would be a great start. Maintain vehicles so that they have working brakes. I was given a vehicles that had multiple dents, scrapes and a fog light that was completely broken and cracked. I figured I'd record it and then have the person notate the damage and I'd be ok. Got on the freeway and when i brakes the car started violently shaking, it was very frightening and the rotors are absolutely damaged beyond repair. Turned around brought car back and was charged again (300$) for an exchange .. so they charged me twice. They said the charges will fall off but I am not so sure. Really awful experience all around. BEWARE: I rented the car and saw on my receipt that Sharon, from the San Diego Airport location added the "LOSS DMG WVR" even though I verbally declined it. I'm stuck with the bill for now. The website is not friendly and the hotline is automated. Makes it very difficult to fix a problem. Furthermore the response below requires me to message hertz directly on Facebook messenger. I do not have Facebook. The website POC finally got back to me, but said they could not waive the fee since I signed. They did not take into consideration the lengthy conversation I had which led me to believe the fee was not added. The main issue I have is I had a long conversation with Sharon, the clerk about military always waiving that extra cost. She agreed that no military ever adds that cost. She said it's also sad because because workers get their commission based on selling add ons. She told me that she will get a negative score if she doesn't sell any add ons. So did she add it on to get a bonus? She should be held accountable if thats the case. Due to this unauthorized charge, my company credit card, my travels are on hold. We had a reservation for 2:00. The line for the airport shuttle to 35 to 40 minutes and was completely disorganized. We arrive at the rental car center it is utter chaos. We get to the Dollar rental counter the line is out the door the kiosks two of which do not appear to be working and the time on them is incorrect thereby telling us we don't get our car for another 15 minutes when it's already 2:00. We get a car finally issued to us and we get to the car and somebody else is in the car. Then we're stuck in a garage waiting for somebody to help us to get a car. This was a nightmare of an experience and everybody involved in this company should be embarrassed. It's 3:00 and now we are officially late for our next engagement. read more

But when we got in line the line was out the the street where the shuttle busses drop folks off. 45 mins and just in the doors of Dollar/Thrifty. Will likely be 1.5 hrs. So just know going in. Why there's just 2 people working on a Sunday afternoon is beyond me. I was told & verified this by Hertz next door. If you booked directly w Dollar/Thrifty you can transfer your reservation over to Hertz (line of 1 over there when I went & 3 people working.) Please take my advice when I say DO NOT rent with this car rental company. I have been going back and forth with Dollar Rental and Hertz the parent company of Dollar rental since the beginning of June. I rented a car which the company forgot to put the oil cap on at the time of rental. I drove 50 miles when I noticed the vehicle started smoking. I pulled over and there was oil spraying everywhere and onto my clothes. the car was not operable after that as we discovered there was an oil leak. I could NOT get a live representative to assist during my whole week of vacation. So far I have had zero cooperation through better business bureau on getting a refund as well as disputing refund with my bank. I had a reservation for Thursday night Feb 27, 2025 8:45 p.m.. I didn't have time to look at the horrific Dollar San Diego Airport reviews before I made the reservation, because my flight was landing 2 hours late, so I made the reservation right before boarding the plane. Huge mistake. I arrived at the SD airport offsite office to find 8 people in front of me. There was one man with long black hair in a messy bun thing (not professional!!!) who was NOT TRAINED AT ALL and had absolutely no idea what he was doing. Fire him!!!! His customer was a woman who supposedly didn't have a car reservation. Why isn't there ONE line for people who have a reservation, and another line for people who do NOT have a reservation!!!! After 15 minutes, I walked up to his counter to ask him why he was taking so long. He said he was having trouble finding them a car. Then call your supervisor! I told him the line was not moving, and at this rate, we were going to be there 4 hours! Lady then comes out to the other counter (I think from another car company Dollar shares their office with). This lady was very slow, but not nearly as bad as the long-haired Dollar employee. Line still not moving. The long hair guy tells me I can check-in online (I already had a reservation). So I check-in online with my credit card, drivers license, photo. So then I proceed to walk a long way to the garage to get my car. Guess what- no Dollar employees at all in the garage. So the Hertz lady told me that Dollar NEVER has employees in the garage at night, and that I have to go back in line inside. I was irate. Go back in after I lost my place in line. The long haired guy finally got the woman a car after 1 hour and 10 minutes. Are you insane! Worst customer service I've ever seen. My flight from Utah to San Diego took 1 hour 30 minutes. It took me 1 hour 40 minutes to get to the counter. The woman helped me. The long haired guy was on customer #2 after 1 hour 40 minutes. What a joke. I went to the parking garage to get my Nissan, to find that it stunk very very badly of cigarette smoke. It was absolutely disgusting. I have asthma and my son is severely allergic to cigarette smoke and this car you could not even breathe in! Shame on you Dollar. If you just need a car rental for the standard rental period, you're good. If you need to actually talk to someone good luck. I rented a car for a month with no issues. I tried to extend it online but they were apparently selling the car. I was able to easily book another rental and swap them within an hour. The second rental also needed to be extended, and that easily went through online. Dollar is on the first level, so there's no need to go up/down escalators or drive the spiral levels with a car you've never driven before - both a huge plus (and time saver if you're rushing to make your flight). There is a bit of a wait at the counter, but the first young gentleman that helped me was fantastic. Got me the car quickly, answered several questions, and even ran off to find a cart for my luggage. The girl working returns is awesome. She doesn't care if your car is dirty, as long as the gas is the same and you didn't wreck it. And a great attitude to boot. Both encounters with her were great. The second person at the counter was also good. Very quick, efficient, and no problems. I would rent from them again. read more

Bait and Switch. Reserved car thru Expedia for $301 for a week at Charlotte NC. Prior to picking up car we had to have a new credit card issued due to being hacked. When we went to pick up car the app noted that we had to go to the Dollar desk and provide add'l information (new card number). The agent said they could not update the information and would not honor the rental agreement and had to make a new reservation which cost nearly double ($568). I will never rent from Dollar again, hope the extra $ money they coerced from me is worth it. read more

Look, I've come to expect the reasonable when it comes to car rental places. There are usually lines, the clerks try to add on additional expenses, and if not careful they will charge you for dings and scratches you did not do. Here's my experience. I booked through Southwest online to get reward points...seamless...didn't have to pay until we arrived. Shuttle was quick ... however, was irritated at all the rude people and bus drivers who allowed them to push their way on when others had been waiting. We literally watched a family of 5 with a child in a wheelchair continually lose their place (1st in line) because other selfish people kept scurrying on. It was frustrating to see the shuttle drivers let folks load from the back when this family was waiting over and over. Geez people ... show some kindness! This family thanked us for voicing our concern for them. Someone has to stand up for the humble...smh. Anyway as far as getting to the rental location - fine. Hertz was consolidated due to covid and processing the Dollar rentals but they did fine. All you have to do is say "NO" to all added protections and then find your car. When you find your car, video record a thorough inspection and note any scrapes, dents, stains, etc. Then you are good to go. No problems, return was easy. We were charged what we expected. Don't not use them. Their loyalty program looks to discredit applying the points for booked travel. They give you the tricks and hoops to succeed at using the points after the fact. I've tried 4 times between Sept 2022 - Feb 2023. Each time they say it's my fault that I didn't order the car correctly. Furthermore, they don't reverse the fees either. If you ever have to call customer service, it's a nightmare. Just calling for changes to your iteniary or trying to get any info from this is a challenge. So, when I called to further my complaint to upper management, there is no one to talk to. I was directed to submit the complaint on the feedback section on the website. You know that will go no where. I travel 35 weeks out of the year. I exclusively used Dollar to rentals. You can only imagine the points I have stored over the last 2 years. It's all a waste at this point because I can't seem to redeem them. There are no exceptions to the rules that they created and they don't care about resolving a problem from high volume customer that I have been. I rented a full size SUV from this location two weeks ago for 4 days. Only one they had available was a Chevy Suburban. I only used 1/2 tank during my rental and filled it up the night before returning to the airport - $80 to be exact. I drove less than 2 miles from the MCX gas station on base back to my room right after fuming the tank up. I drove directly to the rental car agency the next morning on 10/6 to return the vehicle and parked it with a full tank. Fast forward to today, 10/18,, where Dollar charged $49 to my card. When I called to inquire, they said it was for fuel. Oh hell no. Idk what you thought but, try crack before you try me. The drive from Camp Pendleton to the rental car garage will not, and did not, use up enough gas to move the needle lower than a full tank They claim they will refund my card. We'll see. Why was my original comment deleted for absolutely NO REASON? DO NOT USE DOLLAR NO MATTER WHAT! I had reservations for a car in February 2025 on a Thursday night. The rental cars are off-site from the SD Airport, so I found that a nuisance. Arrived at the Dollar office to find 8 people in line with 1 guy there. He was helping a lady who did NOT have a reservation. He clearly was NOT trained. How hard is it to look in your computer system to see if you have ONE car available for her? As the line grew, customers were complaining loudly!!! The guy in the man bun told me that since I had a reservation, I could just check in online on my cell, then proceed to the garage to get the car. I had my paperwork that I printed out at home in Colorado. Then why don't you have a sign up in your office telling customers with reservations you can do this (found out later you can check in online but you cannot proceed at all to the parking garage- you MUST wait in line in the office!!!- most other rental cars do NOT do this!!!). So, I DID do this, then walked FAR to the parking garage at like 9:30 p.m. on Thursday to find NO ONE from Dollar in the car garage. No signs, no nothing. So I had to walk very far back to the office with my big luggage. This was a LIE that you can check in online and simply go to the garage to get your car like other rental car companies!!!! I lost my place in line as a result of this guy in a man bun. Another lady showed up, I think from Avis? that shared the office with Dollar. She was slow too, but better. It took me 1 hour 45 minutes to get my car with a reservation. Guess what- it took the man bun guy about 1 hour 20 minutes to find the lady with no reservation a car. WHY? Why on earth would it take 1 hour 20 minutes to do this. So in the 1 hour 45 minutes I was in the office, the man bun guy was on his SECOND customer still!!! ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. NEVER EVER EVER USE DOLLAR NO MATTER WHAT. It's worth paying another COMPETENT rental car company MORE than having to wait hours in line at this horrible place. I wish I would've seen the reviews before booking. POV: You caught the red eye out of SFO, hadn't slept in 48 hours hadn't eaten in 18 hours, and had to deal with a rude shuttle driver. I've never had issues using my debit card to book or pay for a rental car but as soon as I presented the card and my driver's license the rental associate, I think his name was Ivan, got this almost disgusted look on his face and proceeded to inform me in the most snooty way possible that they would need a list of things from me, including a credit check, proof that I was in fact traveling home at the end of my trip, an address of where I was staying and several other things I've never been asked for in order to rent a car. I get that with a debit card some car rental places have their own procedures but I wasn't prepared for what happened next. When I stated that I didn't understand all the hoops "Ivan" insinuated that I would be crossing the border and making illegal transactions. I'm not kidding, that is literally what he hinted at. I wish I was making this up. I'm Mexican-American and have a very Latin name as it appears on my DL, although I am a lighter complexion, I've had my share of racially motivated rudeness, but for him to flat out say "people cross the border and do illegal things with debit cards" when I never mentioned where I was going or what I was doing and mind you, my drop off for the car was listed as LAX, I landed in San Diego to visit a family member at the Marine Base before driving up to Disneyland. There was only one other patron in the office who happened to appear white and they were given the red carpet treatment even though, from what I heard, they were berating the person helping them and being rude, meanwhile I walked in smiling and determined to enjoy my vacation, so instead of going back and forth with this racist person I politely explained how ridiculous the situation was and requested my DL and card back and requested my rental to be canceled. As I was walking out "Ivan" clearly wanting the last word, stated that I would receive the same treatment at every rental location. How wrong he was, I went up the stairs to Enterprise and was given a warm welcome, it was Halloween weekend and they offered me candy, asked nicely about my plans, showed genuine interest and we're the sweetest ladies. I gave them my DL and DC and without blinking they typed in my info, got me set up with a car and all they asked was the confirmation number to my flight home. I wish I was giving a zero star review. This company completely screwed up my vacation plans. The vehicle I reserved was not available, a full size, and I got instead a sub compact. To add insult to injury, I was told by the company representative that the electric vehicle was the same price as a full size... Bullshit!!! I don't recommend Dollar Rental Cars to anybody.
