I would like to start off with the host outside the restaurant and Samuel our bus person were the saving graces of our dining experience at Domenico's on the wharf. We weren't sure what we wanted to eat for dinner our first night in Monterey, but we felt like some seafood and a bit fancy. We knew if we chose an Italian restaurant, our kids would most likely order pasta and we could get our seafood fix. Now let me talk about the good: The food was delicious. We started off with the crab cakes, clam chowder, seafood Alfredo, and a cioppino. Our kids had a clam chowder in a bread bowl and our youngest had the kids pizza. Now the bad: Service. Our server was Patrick. He seemed annoyed when he greeted our table. He asked us if we needed more time, I said sure, but a few minutes later he returned and asked if we were ready to order drinks. I hadn't even looked over their wine list. I wanted to order something local while I was here. We ordered a local chardonnay, he poured a glass then he left and came back with my hubby's cocktail. I tried not to let his negative vibe ruin our dinner and our beautiful view of the wharf. He returned took our food order and we didn't see him back until we received our food. My hubby filled my glass, then Samuel came with an ice bucket and my hubby continued to fill my glass. Patrick never came back to ask how our food was or to you guessed to fill my glass of wine. He was however attentive to our other tables in the restaurant. This was not a fine dining experience; a coffee diner at best. Thank goodness for Samuel, Patrick even got a tip at all from us. I'll die saying it, but some people still tip on service. Samuel cleared our plates, checked on us and even offered us dessert and brought our bill. If Patrick just did the bare minimum and treated us with decency, he would have received a 20% tip. We're that easy. I had cash, I should have asked for change or gave the whole tip to Samuel, but I gave him the majority of it since he was the one that actually took care of us. I had higher hopes for this place. We had another table reserved elsewhere, and dined her instead, but next time we're in Monterey we won't be coming back here unless Samuel is our server. Thank you and the host for taking care of us. I highly recommend Domenico's if you are in Monterey and you go to Old Fishermans Wharf. Most tables have a nice view of the bay. The staff is very friendly. We had an artichoke as an appetizer. We stumbled on this place after walking out of Grottos after just drinks. My daughter and I absolutely CANNOT eat clam chowder without lots of pepper and most importantly LOTS of crackers. (Preferably Oyster crackers). Grottos informed us that they could give us "extra bread," to go with our $28 bread bowl, but no thanks. We had to leave. Boy are we glad we did!!! At Fisherman's wharf on a Saturday and decided on this spot. The batter on the calamari was thin and seasoned the way I like it but it got a little messy because the breading falls off easily. Their house tartar sauce is sweet and pretty good. Clam chowder, unique to Monterey Bay I guess, has bits of carrots in it and adds sweetness to the chowder. It was creamy and pretty good. The hole cut in the break bowl was a little shallow though so there was more bread and less soup than at Boudin's. read more

All I can really say is I'm in awe of how kind and welcoming the team was throughout our visit here. My boyfriend and I were visiting and David who was attending to us last night was incredible. He offered recommendations, pictures, and constantly checked in. We've been going here for decades. I remember when John Pisto would come and greet you tableside. He was amazing. When I was in nursing school and broke we would go for their all day happy hour and they treated us with respect and like we had just as much money as anybody else was there. Have been there for beaucoup dinners with friends and family. Love their winter time locals specials. If you live locally they have a special reduced price locals menu. So good. But by far my hubby and I have spent most of our visits stopping by in the afternoon and sitting at the bar people watching and enjoying the views. Their bartenders are great and some have been there for decades. I love their steamed clams and their fresh anchovies. These anchovies are palm length fish and grilled not the small fishy stuff from the cans. (which I also love) Hubby loves their Oven Roasted Garlic With Toast, Kalamata Olives, Roasted Red Peppers and Feta Cheese it's a huge serving. Oysters raw or Rockefeller paired with a salad -so good. As far as the service, my husband and I had spent hours sitting at the bar in this place and I mean hours over the past couple of decades, we have a Birdseye view of all the staff and how they're interacting with the patrons without them being aware. And I have to say I have rarely ever seen any type of unprofessional or negative interaction on the behalf of their staff there. They all work together as a team they watch out for each other and they clearly have some very good camaraderie going. Kudos to the management. read more

My friend and I went whale watching yesterday and we actually saw the elusive, extremely rare Sperm Whale. It was amazing. So we decided to celebrate afterwards with a late lunch at the only place I ever eat on the Wharf. I tell all my guests at work to go here! Sammy and his staff are wonderful and friendly. We sat by a huge picture window on a beautiful day. Ordered a glass of wine and one of the best Bloody Mary's I've ever had. I ordered cod tacos, appreciating it was grilled and not fried. My friend got the crab salad, which had a huge pile of crab and all the salad extras. Delicious bread with seasoned butter were given to us. Yum! It was a feast! The food was solid -- the halibut and cioppino were tasty and fresh -- but I was shocked when I saw the final bill. Our subtotal was about $274, but after sales tax and a "gratuity" of $49.37 automatically added, the total jumped to over $360. That's roughly $75 more than expected, before even adding a tip of my own. There was no clear notice about the automatic gratuity for our table, and it felt like it was quietly slipped in. I always tip well for good service, but customers deserve transparency -- especially when it's nearly 20% added automatically. Great view and good seafood, but the lack of honesty with pricing left a bad taste. Check your bill carefully before paying. read more

I made a reservation thru Open Table, but I was early enough at 5 on a Wednesday and really didn't need it. They immediately sat me at a 2-flat top near the windows over looking the docks. Most of the seating overlooks the water. Service was great. My waiter was professional and knowledgeable aboit the menu and the ingredients of the dishes. I ordered the grilled octopus appetizer. The meat was tender and delicious. I didn't care for all of the extra slices of onion and bell pepper that came with it. Just seemed like filler. Next I had the cioppino. This was a good sized serving of stew. A rich tomato base with plenty of clams, mussels, shrimp, squid, pieces of white fish and a cluster of crab legs! Steaming hot and served with garlic bread.
