The Dominion House Tavern, built before 1850, is the oldest remaining continuously run tavern in the Windsor-Detroit Border region and one of the oldest in Ontario. Gord and I had read Genevieve Graham's novel "Bluebird" and her characters went there during prohibition. We both like history so we wanted to check it out. What a fun spot! Not a bad atmosphere, a bit of an older clientele & decor is kind of dark though. Popped in for a drink and live music, which was very nice.

The "DH" as it's dubbed by locals, what can I say about this place? The oldest pub/tavern here in Olde Sandwich Town/Windsor and has been open since before the 1850's. This place is the best local place to come to beer and food with friends. I have been to the DH several times over the years with friends, and just recently on St. Patrick's Day. It was loud, crowded and there were lots of people celebrating the day and listening to the live music located behind the bar. I had a cider, which they only had Strongbow on Tap because they had run out of Somersby earlier in the day. Definitely going to come back here when it's less crowded a bit quieter for some drinks with friends. Servers were great, food was on point and the company was even better. Since its minutes away from my house, the DH is a winner location wise. I can understand how others could disagree though. The space is great inside and out. It reminds me a lot of those pubs you'd see in the UK. The outdoor patio is alongside the beach volleyball court. There's also a TV on outside, so catching the Spitfires game while drinking a pitcher is always an option (weather permitting of course) Not a sports fan? Bring a deck of cards! Or not! There's pool, a few arcade games and the occasional live performance. The staff is very friendly and are always ready with suggestions. I have yet to try the food there though, but the menu does looks good. Every time I've been there, we just drink! Great spot, chillin atmosphere. read more

DH! DH! DH! This is one of the best pubs in Windsor EVER! For locals and students alike, this pub made some of the best food and drinks around the campus area! I have to admit that is had been quite a few years since I have been here (as I haven't been a student in about 5 years), but the food here was always something I was raring to go back for. From your regular burgers and sandwiches to some old classics like Bangers and Mash & Sausage and Sauerkraut, they had anything that you could have wanted! Some of the apps were amazing too! Service was always amazing, as the servers were super nice and friendly. They would always provide awesome suggestions for you when you weren't sure what you wanted. The interior wasn't all that large as it is an actual house, but there is enough seating between the first and second floor, and the patio area. The bar area also has a couple dart boards, from what I remember, so there is something to do there if needed. They also hosted musicians from time to time, so the place could be poppin' when they have performers! Definitely somewhere that had amazing food and a great atmosphere. Worth checking out if you're a student or just visiting, as all the locals definitely know of this place! read more

Windsor's oldest pub is this quaint little british-style one near the bridge. Easy to get to and get home to the north (Detroit)! I came to see Howard Jones play an intimate gig here by myself and quickly made friends with about a dozen locals who love the libations! GOOD, because I do, too (and so does my exquisitely trained Jimmy Buffett Parrothead liver!). I had the fish and chips with a side of jalapeno beer cheese soup. The fish was beer battered with a thick, crunchy batter that really did not need any lemon or tartar sauce. It was that good. The beer cheese soup was mildly spicy and just perfect on a rainy, drizzly night. I am looking forward to coming back with my other half! Bartenders and owner were friendly, fun and interesting. The best things about this place are their fish and chips, as well as the outdoor patio and volley ball court in summer time. Service here is terrible. Servers are students who could care less. The bartender is condescending, rude and has no passion for his vocation. It shows. The beer was warm on more than one occasion and no one, not even the bespectacled barman/manager knows how to pour a proper pint of Guinness! The place has really gone downhill. Not recommended. Go to Rock Bottom down the street. read more

Anytime I go south of the border, I have to make a stop at Dominion House. Supposedly it is the oldest bar in Windsor and it definitely has the feel of a neighborhood pub. DH also offers nice calamari, poutine, and lots of Canadian beers that are tough to find in the U.S. read more

I have not been into the old DH in years but their new menu is exceptional. We had the calamari as a starter and it was tender and well seasoned with a perfectly crispy batter. My wife loved her shrimp po boy and they have really elevated the buffalo chicken sandwich beyond the usual dry chicken finger in wing sauce. I very highly recommend everyone try it. read more

Had a nice dinner and pints here with my parents after checking on the boat at its winter digs and taking a hike down to Point Pelee earlier in the day. Surprisingly good samosa and a tasty veggie dish for me, and my parents enjoyed their meat-based dinners. Good portions, good prices. Established in 1878, this place is OLD, but you can kind of feel the vibe and history when you walk into the place. It really is pretty cool! There is some maintenance that needs to be done, but nothing too extravagant. The new menu is great, and probably the best pub menu I've seen lately. Food is mostly good, although a bit on the salty side for some plates. But that's common for north american food unfortunately. read more

I'm from Detroit and decided to take a trip over to Windsor to check out some different places. I'm a big fan of English style pubs and Dominion House reminds me of some of the places I was in while visiting the UK. It's a 19th century house that has been converted into a pub and music venue. I really like the atmosphere, nothing fancy and the prices are resonable. I ordered the fish and chips. There was two good size pieces of haddock along with a large amount of fries and cole slaw. The fish tasted fresh and not frozen. The flavor was very good, better I might add than most of the places I've had fish and chips in the Detroit area. The fries and cole slaw are also home made and very good. There's a large variety of beer available, I had a pint of Canadian draft. I'm definately going back to try some of the other things on the menu such as the bangers and mashed potatoes. The only thing that I was disappointed with was the dessert I ordered. The Apple Brown Betty was basically three scoops of vanilla ice cream with some apple crumble and topped with caramel. The apple part was cold, not warm and didn't have much flavor. This dessert is $7.99 and in my opinion not worth any more than half that at best. I went on a Sunday night and stayed around to see the live solo musician that starts playing a little after 9:00pm. "Dusty" turned out to be a very fine guitarist and vocalist and played his first set to basically an empty room. There was no cover charge. In the right place and on the right night his level of musical ability could easily merit a cover charge. Dominion House seems to be a favorite for college students and people in that age group. On weekends it's a music venue with a wide variety of rock bands performing. I would definately go back to see some of the bands perform. I really like this place and will definately return. It's to bad that it costs $10.00 ($5.00 each way) to take the tunnel or bridge over to Windsor and back. It's also a shame that you have to do the "dance" through customs. If I lived in Windsor, I would go there regularly. read more
