We love Dr Mei and Dr. Pratt. They are very friendly and sweet. Both of them, as well as their assistants are very gentle, which is especially important when you have a young patient like my daughter. She was 7 when she first came in. They were very accommodating and conscientious when we had a problem with the expander they had installed. One of the bands had become unglued and they brought us in on a day when they weren't officially taking appointments so they could fix it. Now J has braces and she actually likes them! We are on our way home to check out her new glow in the dark bands! read more

She also is a part-time faculty professor at Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Orthodontics. I really appreciated her calling me to discuss... I was actually shocked. She didn't try to sway me to give her practice another chance or anything like that. She just wanted to apologize. She sounded sincere in her apology. It takes a lot of chutzpah to call and attempt to resolve a situation and I truly appreciated it.

Surprisingly it's pretty normal,going to the dentist during COVID was a major concern for me. I'm happy to report VFD is doing an amazing job keeping everyone healthy and safe. They have limited seating in the waiting area, mask are required. Both the dentist and hygienist wear both a mask and a face shield and there is hand sanitizer everywhere! Long story short if there was a cleanliness award during the pandemic VFD would easily win the award!

Fast forward, I received another bill so I call and suddenly Amber's information is incorrect to the tune of over $400. Never again will I use them. Never will I recommend them.

My daughter received a regular retainer after treatment however with her being 12 at the time she lost it!! I went back to Horsey and it was suggested to go with the permanent retainer as an alternative to her "losing it" again. I paid the $250.00 fee and the permanent retainer was placed. I was told that day, she should continue to wear the tray retainer at nights for a week and we went on our way..... fast forward 6 months later- I started noticing my daughter was beginning to form a gap, I called Horsey and came in for a visit. I was told she needed to have a 8 month treatment plan because the retainer broke and it would cost me additional money. I explained to them that I have a permanent retainer myself for well over 10 years and I haven't had an issue with mines nor have my teeth moved as I don't wear my tray at night ( this was one of the excuses I was told - my daughter was the wear the tray every night) I asked to have someone look into this issue because I didn't think it was fair to spend an additional substantial amount of money after spending well over 5k for the treatment. At this point the Dr and nurses in the back were very professional and understood my concerns. I spoke with a young lady at the front of the office, she identified herself as the "office manager, or office coordinator", I explained my situation to her and off the bat she said "it's my responsibility to make sure my child is wearing her retainer " I explained to her that I was told the permanent retainer should've fixed any issues and we were only instructed to wear it for a week. This young lady was at times combative, rolled her eyes at me and was very dismissive. She even had the nerve to lie and say I received the retainer for free, she quickly back tracked after I said I could show my receipt that I paid for it. At this point I have reserved a consult with another orthodontist, I'd rather spend the additional money elsewhere than to give it to this business.

The security guard let us know the urgent care may not be open due to lack of students but we'd see what we could do. We got in and urgent care wasn't open but when I explained what was going on, they told me to check in and see if oral surgery would take me. As I went to do that, a doctor came out and said oral surgery would be taking extractions for the day but that was all. I checked in and they had me back in a chair within 30 mins tops. The receptionists were so nice and when I was doing my insurance and paperwork, the receptionist even said she didn't know how I could joke with the pain I was in and she hoped they got me taken care of soon. The nurse that took me back was so so kind. She asked if I was sure I didn't want to save my tooth since insurance would pay for it but when I was in tears from the pain she said she understood. The dentist pulling my tooth practically knew what tooth it was before I gave any info. He was very knowledgeable and had good bedside manners. Everything was done in about 20 minutes once the questions and history were done. I will definitely be switching to their practice as a patient because everyone was absolutely so kind and helpful. I feel a million times better, even with being a little sore from an extraction of a molar. They let me take a photo of the tooth too which, as a healthcare worker, the medical photos are always fun for me.

The student was nice enough, but the instructors do not care. I kept being charged more than the…read moreestimate for substandard work. The student and instructor spoke primarily in a foreign language and I never knew what was going on, as they didn't bother to inform me. I kept showing up for appointments not knowing what procedure they had planned or how much it would cost. They are militant about payment, threatening to cancel appointments if payment is not made immediately after services are delivered, even if you are in bad shape from the procedure and have a hard time concentrating on financial matters. I was on my way to an appointment, planning to pay for the previous days appointment before my scheduled appointment, but they made me pull over on the side of the road while driving to pay immediately or have the appointment canceled. My local dentist apologized for the work done by VCU after looking in my mouth. He then adjusted the temporary denture so that it didn't cause me pain and draw blood if I attempted to use it. The instructor had refused to fix the problem as he 'only dealt with one problem at a time' and he had to remove some spicules. I had to have spicules removed by them and the local dentist I hired, who said he had never seen so many spicules sewed up in someone's gums. There were 22 spicules that had to be removed over a period of two months. They shattered my teeth and left the pieces in my gums and sewed them in. They ground down one side of my jawbone and did not even it out on the other side, so now any plate sits on a pivot point and cannot be glued in place, because as soon as any pressure is applied, the plate comes loose and falls into my mouth. I will have to pay for another surgery to fix what VCU dental did to my mouth. They promise you good work for a reduced price, but I received substandard work for nearly the same as a good dentist. The instructor should have been there to monitor the procedures, but he was absent for 99% of the work, only showing up to make the student nervous and make disparaging comments to her. I don't blame the student, as she was completely let down by her instructor. My experience informs me that the instructirs at VCU dental don't want to be there and don't care about the work being done. They don't even bother to speak English, to allow for understanding of the patients who visit. If you have an emergency, perhaps it is worth it to visit VCU dental, but otherwise, don't let them permanently damage your mouth with poor behavior and insult you with claims of non payment. Just avoid the place completely, if you can. When you go to an independant dentist, look attheir certificate and make sure it doesn't say 'VCU Dental''. If it does, go somewhere else for your own health.

Dr. O'Shanick and his staff started taking care of me in 2006, two years after I received a…read moretraumatic brain injury from a dog attack. From 2004-2006 another local neurologist was treating my daily migraines and many other symptoms from the (as of that time undiagnosed) permanent brain injury that I received in the dog attack. This other neurologist's ONLY treatment for me was Vicodin, which was not helping me, it was only making it worse. He did not listen to me nor do an MRI. At the time that I first went to CNS I was barely able to speak in full sentences. Each morning would start with me being sick, from waking up with a migraine, so I could not be around bright lights w/o extreme pain in my head. I had a severe balance problem causing me to fall down three flights of stairs fracturing my spine in several places. I could go on, but you probably get the picture. Dr. O'Shanick listened to me. He properly diagnosed me and helped me with O.T., Speech Therapy, got me off of the Vicodin and on proper migraine therapy. After two years of daily migraines and not wanting to leave the darkness in my home, I finally started to function again! I could remember words when I would have a conversation with my kids. The migraines slowly went away, thank the Lord! I stopped falling, learning how to deal with my balance being 'off'. In short, thanks to Dr. O'Shanick, I actually feel 'human' again. That can only be understood by someone who has suffered a brain injury. I do still have ringing in my ears, but unfortunately that is permanent. Dr. Pratt and her staff, were very open, honest, and compassionate from the first moment we walked into their office. There was never a time where I felt that I did not know what was going on or what was to come next. They were always very willing to answer and of my questions or address my concerns. As we neared the end of my son's treatment, I received a call from Dr. Pratt wanting to make sure that I did not have any concerns, or questions when it came to his treatment. My granddaughter and I love Dr. Pratt! The office staff for the most part is very friendly and astute with appointments. The staff in the back are all top notch , A1 professionals since day one. The fact that not the staff, but that the Orthodontist herself places calls the next day(after every appointment) to check the status of my skiddish preteen ( who's distrusting of every adult, right now), speaks volumes.
