Don Coqui is known for having authentic latin cuisines. I miss my latin food so when I found myself in NY again I went straight there. The atmosphere is lively. They have a photographer onsite taking pictures of customers who want that experience. My best friend and I had our picture framed and we purchased it after dinner, it was a nice memory to have. Don Coqui just gave me the best day ever !!! Not only did I not know that such beauty was in our very own back yard, but Jay ( Manager ) and Walter ( our server ) made us feel like family!! You would never have known that we happened by such magnificences by accident!! The food was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! As were the cocktails ! I had the very best Mojito I have ever had and I have never liked Mojito's before. ( I am not kidding or exaggerating ) We will be life long customers as should anyone who is reading this. If you can't find me, look for me there !!! I needed today, all of today, on so many levels, that I dont truly have the words to enumerate what it did for me and my "brain". Came here for Dominican Mother's Day and we had a great time. About 12 of us, kids included. Food was delicious, drinks tasty, by the water so we had a nice breeze, nice view, and the kids had fun with the outdoor games they had and dig some digging in the sand behind the restaurant. If I could give zero stars, I would. I made a reservation at Don Coqui in Haverstraw for August 3rd at 4:00 PM. Upon arrival, we were told valet parking was mandatory--no self-parking option was available. Reluctantly, we handed over the keys to our 1999 red Plymouth Prowler, a car we take great pride in. About 15 minutes after being seated and placing our food and drink orders, a valet driver came looking for the owner of the red car--ours. My husband followed him out, and roughly 10 minutes later returned with devastating news: the valet had crashed our car. We immediately left the table to begin a police report. While we were gone--a full 30 minutes--our food was brought out and left on the table unattended outside by the water. When we returned, another couple seated nearby informed us our food had been swarmed by flies. We politely requested a fresh plate of food, and the waiter questioned our reasoning--strike two. About 10 minutes later, new food was brought out, but at that point we had lost our appetite completely. Manager Joseph eventually came over to offer an apology, which honestly felt hollow and insincere. Then came the bill--$128. We asked to speak with Joseph again, and after waiting 20 more minutes while he seated other guests and clearly avoided us, we approached him directly. I explained that given the circumstances--a valet driver working under the restaurant's name crashed a classic car worth over $30K--the very least the restaurant could do was comp our meal. Joseph's response? That wasn't an option. He actually said: "If I covered meals for every accident, we'd be out of business." He also refused to escalate the matter or provide any contact above him, stating he was second only to the owner. The service was cold, the management dismissive, and the empathy nonexistent. Disappointing - that's the only way to describe dinner at this restaurant. Let me start by saying it is very pretty - it's situated on the water with a gazebo and outdoor eating area - it's lovely to take pictures especially at sunset. My sister was visiting me so we decided to take the drive to eat there. It's about a forty minute drive from my house but we didn't mind. We were seated in their tented outdoor space - and placed our orders. We started with empanadas to share, I ordered the cajun seafood pasta that was listed on their specials and my sister order the oxtail entree. We both had sangria - it was ok. The empanadas were good - we shared a beef and a cheese. My pasta came and it was loaded with seafood.....shrimp, mussels, clams, scallop and a lobster tail. It looked amazing and there was alot of it but there wasn't any seasoning - not even cajun which it was supposed to be. It was also supposed to be in a creamy sauce but the pasta was very dry - I didn't see any sauce at all. I ended up taking most of it home and adding seasoning and sauce and it was actually quite good. My sisters oxtail meal was a very small meal - the oxtails were cut in such a way that she had small bones in her mouth with every bite we are oxtails connoisseurs and know that they should be cut in a circular shape - which is not what she had. It came with a small portion of white rice and beans. For dessert we both had the creme brûlée cheesecake - it was pretty good. I also noticed they had a photographer going around taking photos at the different tables - he never once came to ask us if we wanted our picture taken even though the restaurant wasn't crowded. One of the places that I wish had a better service. Place was amazing sat outdoors with a great view of the Hudson River. My sister was able to reserved a seat outside. While waiting the waitress asked us to sit first on the couch while they prepare our table. After a few minutes our attendant walked us to our seat. Few minutes they gave us water and chips. Waited few more minutes until our waiter took our orders and immediately sent our drinks. Drink was okay our pina colada was mostly coconut can't even taste the pineapple. My husband got mojito and my sister got margarita. Food was fast until... my husband needed another drink in the middle while eating. He was not able to get his drink until it was dessert time already. Kept on asking few people I think they forgot? They are so packed. If only they attended and hired more waiters it would have been a great experience. There was also this guy that was taking our pictures and I thought it was free ended up selling pictures with frames for $20 each $22. Something if you use card. They ended up singing me a happy birthday in a fast tune (understandable again as there was a lot of people) wish they would have been more present to their customers. So, this wasn't my first time coming to Don Coqui. However, it was my first time coming to this specific location. My family decided to make a reservation for Father's Day to bring my dad. The location is beautiful. Nice outdoor seating. But it's like I always say, what's the point of the place looking nice if the food and service isn't going to match it? Our food took over an hour to come to the table. Now I get it, it's father day so you can expect it to be busy. But with that being said , there are many things you can do to keep your customers happy and satisfied while they wait for their food. This place has poor management for starters. Our server was all over the place. He came took our drink/food order , brought us the drinks and we didn't see or hear from him until AFTER we complained to him and the manager about the long wait time. The food was ok. Some of the people in my table complained that theirs was cold and my steak was chewy and cooked so wrong! The fries were super soggy with my sons burger. They sat way too long and they weren't Cooked properly , which is why they were soggy. Like I stated above, my sister and dad had to complain so our table could get some attention. They gave us free dessert to try and make up for it but I was fine without it. I was already so unimpressed. I will not come back to this location. They can do way better. Again, the location is nice and all but not worth it if the food and service SUCKS! We came on a Saturday to enjoy the ambience of the outside seating near the ocean and amazing weather. The service was slow, and felt rushed, and I'm not sure why. However, the servers and busboys were very friendly. A beautiful place to eat and take photos. Please be aware that the sun is potent and the umbrella will not always cover you from the Sun. I visited this restaurant for dinner with a friend while Covid 19 quarantine restrictions were in effect. The outdoor dining area was exceptional at this location specifically because the seating is along the waterfront. I ordered the fish tacos as an appetizer which were very good. The seafood plate that I ordered was also great as well as the drinks were great but quite small in size like most places during quarantine. I definitely plan to return when dining is back to normal because I think my experience would be even better. read more

This is our second time coming here and as usual, there's a great vibe if you eat outside. I love the music, the beautiful weather, and the Hudson River right there. It's a nice place to hang out and just enjoy the atmosphere. First up, we had an immense $30 Strawberry/Mango margarita. We shared it between us and then had some leftover to share with the kids (adult kids....relax!) The drink was definitely boozy and I like that in a drink :) We ordered the shrimp empanadas and BBQ Guava wings as appetizers. The empanadas were chuck full of perfectly seasoned shrimp. You get two of them for $10. It's an empanada (not a pastelillo -- if you are boricua you know what I'm talking about). The empanadas have a thicker dough compared to the pastelillos. I would definitely get them again. The wings were mediocre and I would not get them. The flavor was not "Caribbean" and they were not hot and crispy. We ate them anyway but just so you know to get a second set of empanadas instead. My hubby loved the Arroz con Pollo -- lots of chicken chunks and it was delicious. The people that had our leftovers said it was really good too. Not as good as mine...but hey...I also didn't have to clean up. I had the pork chops and I exchanged the potatoes for rice and red beans because I love rice and beans. The rice and beans were good but I was kind of disappointed in the pork chops. They had good flavor but were too thin and dry. I was expecting one thick pork chop instead of two thin ones. My husband had flan...we can never go anyplace where there's flan on the dessert menu and he hasn't had any. He said it was good. All in all - the waitstaff is friendly, the managers are always coming around to check-in on you, and the vibes are great. The service was terrible. They've dropped the ball with the food. I ordered a skirt steak and it was gummy. They didn't clean it properly. I had my entire meal without a drink. When I finally got a drink it was weak and thats coming from a non-drinker. It wasn't even that busy. It was a Saturday afternoon - and it was not too busy but they were also short on servers. I've been wanting to go to this location since last year when I saw their adds on Instagram. Unfortunately we weren't able to go until last week but definitely super excited. It was a beautiful Saturday evening. I made sure to make a reservation on OpenTable. This Restaurant is right on the water with valet parking provided for their customers. They also have a boat dock so you can arrive by water too. Seating goes like this you can either sit on the beach by the water or the location on the lawn area. They also provide inside seating but on a beautiful day who wants to be inside. They provide a great drink menu for summer days like Sangria or margarita Towers. I ordered a Large Frozen Mango Margarita that was in this cute big cup so worth the price. We also ordered the seafood tower which was great loved the oysters they were delicious. My partner ordered the steak and onions as her entree but was not happy with her plate. Portion size was huge but flavor was completely off. The steak was very chewy and it wasn't your typical steak and onions it had more of a bbq sauce that was very sweet that honestly threw the flavor off. So my partner did not eat her food. Our server immediately told the manager which he apologized for and thankfully he took the dish off the menu. My entree was a Caesar Salad with Skirt steak the serving size was huge but again wasn't you average Caesar it was just lettuce and salad dressing. The food was delicious, good portions (a little too good actually, me and my friend were STUFFED), we could barely walk to the car. Came here for a friends Birthday. This is a Spanish restaurant with a Caribbean flare. The entrance to this place is a little weird, it feels like you're driving into an area that you're not supposed to, but then you go down the ramp and you're there. Indoor seating, outdoor patio seating (which is where we were), outdoor seating by the water (man made beach like area). Beautiful night, beautiful environment. The only reason we didn't do the "by the water" seating was it was a bit too breezy, which made it cold near the water. Also this place was EMPTY! Which is bad for them, great for us. Staff was speedy & efficient. Now for the food: Complimentary Chips & Dip: I don't know what the green dipping sauce was, but it was DELICIOUS!! I could have drank it. Unfortunately the chips were stale. That cheapened the experience, but again, that sauce was so good I just kept eating. Coconut Shrimp w/Chipotle Mango Salsa- Delicious, made to perfection. This was my Wife's dish, so I got to try it too. Teriyaki Salmon- Soooo good. The salmon was done just right, the rice was rich & flavorful. This was a friends dish, but he shared some of the salmon & rice with me. Lemon Chicken- This was the Birthday Girl's dish. I didn't get to taste it, but from the moment she bit into it she started moaning & squirming, I knew it was good, lol. I felt like anyone watching would have jokingly said "I'll have what she's having." Oxtail- This was my meal. I am Married to a Jamaican woman, so oxtail is something I judge harshly.....this was not bad, not bad at all. It was done Caribbean style, not Spanish style. However, it was served with the Spanish style rice & beans, not the Jamaican style "rice & peas." Still overall, I'd give it a B-. Drinks: Rum Punch (not pictured) Heard it was good. The birthday girl actually "complained" it was too strong. Frozen Margarita (I forget the flavor)- My Wife had this tall drink. She said it was also strong. She loved it though. D'ussé Colada- BG's Husband & I both had this. It was definitely a strong drink, but still good. The only MAYBE "bad" thing they had was dessert. They brought out a complimentary dessert with the sparkler & huge "Happy Birthday" sign & they sing to the Birthday person, but she said the dessert (don't even know what it was) was nasty. My Wife tried it & said it was good, & the odd texture is how that style cake is supposed to be made. We (the Husbands) never tried it, so it's an even split on that verdict. They ALSO gave us complimentary Birthday shots of Coquito. Oh! And there was a random duck wandering around, lol. This place was really not what my friend and I expected. We are longtime customers of the Don Coqui brand, frequenting their other locations that used to exist in NYC. I used to go to the Astoria location, and it had a classy vibe: white tablecloths, live music, authentic food, etc. Showing up to the location in Haverstraw was just weird. The town itself didn't match up to the vibe I was expecting from Don Coqui, and when we were being seated, we were walked through what looked like someone's backyard. We were seated under a gazebo and got to participate in the Giant Bee Experience. It's included free with your purchase of drink. They clearly have a major infestation in the roof, there are no doubt hives right above people eating. When one landed in my hair, we asked to move to another table. The view itself is really nice, but that's about where the positives end. We ordered drinks, the pina colada was very good, and sat for a while waiting for our food. It was very busy so I didn't really mind, but when it finally arrived, it was ice cold as if it had been sitting somewhere forgotten about. My friend asked to send it back because it was cold, and the manager wound up having our meals remade and gave us a drink on him. Customer service is good, and food was better, but by no means extraordinary. We seemed to be eating Friday's-level quality food, which did not line up with our previous experiences where we were served very authentic and delicious Latin food. For $32 (skirt steak) I definitely expected better. I'm also not sure what they're doing to the rice. I thought it was just old on my first dish, but when it came back, it was exactly the same. Hard, stuck together, crunchy exterior, dry AF. Basically, a rice patty. Who does this to rice?! Looks like they place rice in molds and bake them until solid. (???) An unfortunate letdown especially when they have such a view. Waiters were bringing drinks out left and right so maybe this place is really just for the view and the drinks. We get the bill and they charged $5 more for my friends mofongo. It clearly said $25 on the menu and we were charged $30. One of the waiters ask for a manager probably three times and no one showed up to our table. He finally took it upon himself to give us a $5 discount on the bill since he could not adjust it himself. My friend and I ate dinner here and had a beautiful time. I believe you have to make reservations to dine and they send you a reminder to confirm a day before. We were looking for a restaurant with outside space and really practiced social distancing during COVIC19 and this place succeeded. They have a large outdoor area that provided sufficient space among diners. The staff were very helpful and professional throughout our stay. The ambiance of the water views were gorgeous. My friend and I agreed we felt like we were in the Caribbean. My friend ordered the fish tacos for an appetizer and the surf and turf as her entree. She was disappointed they didn't offer the lobster mac and cheese that she read about. There menu didn't offer all their options listed online. I ordered the arroz con pollo which was delicious. For drinks I had had the mango pina punch which was cool and refreshing and not too strong for this lightweight drinker. LOL We saw a variety of drinks coming out all night. Prices were fair and me and my friend took him goody bags with our food. As it got later in the night, the cool breeze felt great on a summer night. This is definitely a vibe in the summer by the water listening to music. I always a good time when I am here. The food is good. The seafood mafongo might be my best dish from them. The coconut broth is everything. I want that on everything. Seafood is tender and pairs well with the mafongo. The red snapper was seasoned well and juicy. Oxtail was also good too. Drinks are ok. Barely taste the alcohol but they are nice. Only negative is the service. Everything takes a while because there isn't a lot of staff. Definitely will keep coming back. read more

The restaurant is tucked away at the bottom of the hill at the end of Main Street in Haverstraw NY. The restaurant has valet parking down by the river. The first time I went to this restaurant was on July 4th, 2020. Bruce and I went here after an afternoon at Point Pleasant Beach. So, we were there late but just in time to see some fireworks nearby the Hudson River and a nice Latin meal. We've gone back many times since then. The restaurant isn't fancy but many patrons celebrate their quinceañera and birthdays there. It has a large patio and a little beach area where you can eat at the tables set up on the beach. Definitely go there on a nice summer night and sit outside because the view of the Hudson River and the moon rising is an amazing view. I recommend the skirt steak and the paella. They are fantastic! Drinks are ok but are served in plastic cups. Hmmm. Not sure what happened in the last few years but Don Coqui on the Hudson has gone from really good to middle of the road. My first visit to this location was in 2021. We were in the midst of the pandemic and our group was excited to find a place we could dine safely outdoors and enjoy some beautiful scenery outside of the city. It's a huge and beautiful property with ample indoor and outdoor seating and a view of the Hudson River. I'm also giving them kudos for some additional upgrades to the decor and even more seating. So, where did it go downhill? Service from our waitress was extremely rushed which was odd as we were literally the 2nd guests to arrive after they opened. NOTE: They open at 2pm on a Saturday which is rather late to start brunch. Additionally, folks should be aware that outside of a burger and fries, there are no other traditional brunch items on the menu. Our group of 5 ordered the appetizer platter which came with wings, calamari, pastelitos and calamari). It was nothing to write home about. The flavor profile was average though the portions were generous. Most of us ordered a different dish, jerk chicken, trifongo, porkchops and salmon teriyaki. Again, the dishes were lacking in flavor, and the jerk chicken was dry and inauthentic according to those who ordered it. Honestly, I'm not super surprised as Latin establishments are not necessarily known for jerk dishes. Again, the entree portions were generous - 1/2 of us didn't finish our plates and the other 1/2 took the leftovers to go. Extra points for Jay the manager who was super friendly and came to check in on the table a few times, and a huge shout out to the female bartender. Drinks were excellent. We accomplished what we had hoped to which was a return trip to Don Coqui on a beautiful summer day to catch up. Was seated outdoor by the water under an umbrella but asked to be moved because of the huge bees. They moved us to the seat by the door which was good because we could catch the AC every time the door opened. Ordered the froze & Hennessy punch for drinks & fuego shrimp & plantains to start. They had a special for the Froze, $25 for the magnum. Hell yeah I got it and you get to keep the cup. Drinks started off light put kicked in when the entrees came. So be prepared for the good, strong drinks. Starters were amazing. Not too much sauce on the the fuego shrimp so it didn't make the shrimp soggy. They was a nice crunch on the shrimp with a hint of spice. The plantains were so sweet and delicious. Haven't had sweet plantains in awhile so it was definitely a treat. Honestly by the time the entrees came, I was already full. Ordered the brunch special, steak well done with scrambled eggs with cheese & fries. The steak was seasoned well. The fries were definitely needed to help soak up the alcohol from the Froze. Everything was great! Will definitely be back to try other things on the menu. A very nice place to get your Latin cravings on for sure. Nice ambience although the lighting not so nice for my photos :). It didn't matter however the food was delicious. Our waitress was pleasant and personable and so was the maître/host. He was very attentive but not overbearing with a touch of nice friendly humor. The arroz con gandules with Pernil was delicious. The Pernil was served with a bone. I wasn't expecting that but it was fine and the meat was super tender. The steak with onions was a tad dry than what I'm accustomed to it also could have used a bit more flavor but that's just my opinion. The white rice and black beans were delicious. Guacamole was outstanding especially with a touch of fried plantain and yuca chips!! Wow! The garlic shrimp.....I couldn't get enough. It was perfect especially as I soaked the fried plantains in the garlic sauce! Definitely worth a second trip. read more

Everything from customer service & better organization. No point in making reservations if you're going to be told there are no tables & you still have to wait! Can't even provide a time frame on how long you have to wait. Front desk person was rude & not accommodating! Please provide her with a class on better customer service because her attitude will definitely cost you business! Never again! read more
