Got Jibarito with steak (or can opt for chicken, pork or vegan patty). I've had Venezuelan plantain sandwiches so I was into this. A little hot sauce added was good. The Cuban sandwich was recommended. Another tasty sandwich (though I prefer the Jibarito). Vanilla flancocho was good but I would get the flan by itself next time. It was smooth and creamy. Wood and dark browns with small touches like the S, Y, P for the restaurant's initials, pop of color from the flowery hallway to the restrooms. Stopped by on a Saturday for lunch. When we arrived, it was clear the restaurant had just opened--it was clean but empty. The bartender appeared to be on the phone taking an order and didn't acknowledge us until he finished the call. Once done, he told us to sit at any table and brought over the food and drink menus. Unfortunately, the bartender didn't come across as very friendly. It seemed like he was covering the tables because the server hadn't arrived yet. When the server did arrive, her energy was much more welcoming, and I wish she had been the one to greet and serve us from the start. We ordered the empanadas as an appetizer--two beef and one chicken. We wanted to try the shrimp but were told they didn't have any. The empanadas were flavorful and clearly freshly made. For my entrée, I ordered the arroz con pollo. I was expecting baked chicken with white rice and beans on the side, but instead, it was a one-pot dish with yellow rice, chicken, peppers, and plantains all on one plate. I realized later I had missed the "arroz criollo" description on the menu. While the dish wasn't what I had anticipated, it was still tasty. 24 hour update of eating Sazon y Pilon, I really hate to be the bearer of bad news but I got extremely bad food poisoning. I'm not really sure what happened because I have eaten here before but after experiencing what I've experienced in the past 24 hours has turned me off completely. I was able to reach out to their customer service email and get a refund. The customer service was pleasant so that is the saving grace. They stated that they would review there food handling practices. If you choose to eat here anyway, beware! Sorry!! read more

I finally made it here with my mom, and we had such a great experience! She ordered the lunch special while I went with an entrée. Everything was absolutely delicious--full of flavor and wonderfully authentic. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the place had great music and a warm, inviting ambiance. I had the chimichurri with garlic, served with yellow rice and beans--amazing. My mom chose the pernil with tostones, and the sauce that came with it was out of this world. Brunch was perfect. My friends and I ate while the DJ spun good beats. We had the unlimited mimosas and shared the breakfast pancake tacos, the Mangu mofongo style, and a traditional paella pot. My friends and I had a great dinner at Sazon y Pilon one Saturday night. I was so excited to try this place out. I ate SO much food and felt SO full afterwards so it was definitely a lovely experience. The restaurant is in a strip mall type area with plenty of parking. The restaurant has a very fun vibe to it, with a bar on the left when you first walk in. We were greeted and taken to a four top table. It's a bit smallish on the inside. We started with drinks. I ordered a coconut mojito and it was so delicious! I highly recommend that drink. It was creamy and minty and perfect! We ordered some empanadas for an appetizer and I wanted to try the black bean soup as well. The black bean soup was SO good. It came with sausage and sour cream. I had a shrimp empanada that was just ok, and my friends said the chicken empanadas were just ok as well. For dinner I ordered the Bistec Encebollado and my friends ordered different kinds of Mofungo. The Bistec Encebollado was awesome! The steak was cooked perfectly and the onions were delicious. It was a good sized portion, so I took half of it home. My friend shared some of her Mofungo with me and I didn't really like it. It tasted a bit too salty? I'm glad I went with the Bistec entree! For dessert you know I have to order the tres leches cake. When it first came out I thought it looked a little dry and was feeling like it may not stack up but boy was I wrong! It was definitely airy and moist. I loved the added cinnamon on the top. It was great! I also want to give a shout out to our waitress, Marissa, I believe her name is. Although the food is good here generally speaking, my sister encountered a horrible experience while eating the Mofongo with Pernil. She tasted something really toxic and foreign in her mouth and when she took it out whatever it was spread like a grainy spread of something. - she swears it could have been a mouse. The taste lingered in her mouth for a couple of hours. The worst part is that the manager tried to say it was the fat from the pork but as Puerto Ricans we've been eating pernil our whole life. There is no way that any customer has access to the kitchen to see the cleanliness or lack there of so there is no proof of the conditions back there. The manager also did not try to compensate instead offered her another dish which we had to pay the full price of. They lack accountability and asa side note, they don't know the difference between vegan and vegetarian dietary needs. Needless to say we will not be going back and hope they get inspected. read more

It would be a little over the top to claim to be a mofongo expert, but I will say that I've had a lot of it, and in both high-end and divey establishments in the NYC metro area and in San Juan. This was some of the best mofongo I've ever had, but unfortunately the service was not. I came here with one of my top-tier chums last night, along with a Meatball Honorary Young Pup approaching the ripe old age of 1 1/2. We showed up close to 5:30pm, and it was pretty empty; I think there was one other occupied table. We were immediately shown to a table on the left side toward the front, with a high chair procured for our worldly traveler. My chum immediately imprinted on the empanadas so we got that app, selecting the basics - cheese, beef and chicken. All were very good, and I enjoyed the dipping sauce, which had a chipotle vibe to it. Empanadas can run the gamut, but these were on the thicker side. I deferred to the chum but knowing what I was getting for my entree, I would have passed if it were just me. Regardless, tasty. The mofongo was as advertised, and I can't emphasize what an insanely large portion this was. I basically had an energy drink for lunch and barely got through 30% of it. It's very, very filling and basically the food equivalent of a milkshake - I probably won't have an appetite for another day or so. That said, it was delicious. The consistency was perfect, and the accompanying garlic butter sauce gave it some extra moistness that I'm honestly not sure it needed, but I took advantage of it nonetheless. The pork was tender and flavorful, as nature intended. My chum got the pernil dish (what I got without the mofongo, essentially), and loved it as well. She was a little apprehensive coming in here, dropping some not-so-subtle hints about possibly going to the nearby smokehouse instead, but I didn't hear a peep about that once she started eating. This was setting up to be close to a 5-star experience, but unfortunately there were a few unforced errors on the service side. The waiter's presence was very inconsistent - he was there to take our app order, and then another 10 minutes went by without a sign of him, and the hostess (she may have also been the manager/owner - definitely a gravitas to her) had to come over to confirm whether or not we'd ordered everything yet. Shouldn't be happening. And even with the hostess right there to oversee the order, they didn't get it right. My chum initially received an order of mofongo as well, which had to be replaced/returned. That didn't take long at all but was still a little annoying and easily preventable. The food showed up relatively quickly (mofongo is typically made to order so I was prepared for a longer wait anyway), but then after we were finished and very clearly ready to leave, literally packing up the Meatball's placemat, etc., multiple people walked by our table obliviously without asking if we wanted to check. We had to hail down an employee who wasn't even handling our table. They were very quick to bus dishes, but for whatever reason didn't have the overall vision to know when to stop by at other times. This last part to me is one where your mileage may vary, but I'm inclined to side with my chum. The Meatball...needed a bathroom visit/cleanup, if you catch my drift, so she went into the restroom to get that taken care of before we left. When she came back, she had the haunted look of someone returning from a warzone, which I guess she had except instead of blood there was something else. They didn't have any type of changing table in there, so it was...difficult. And I'm on the fence with this since this is not a restaurant that is aggressively marketing itself as young pup-friendly (we weren't exactly as Chuck E Cheese or anything), but my gut says if you have a section of your menu devoted to them AND you have high chairs ready to go, you should probably have the changing station as well. Anyway. The service was the issue for me more so than this, but I also didn't experience the warzone firsthand. The food was absolutely amazing and I'd come back even with the inconsistent service. Unfortunately, I don't think the Meatball will return for at least a few more years. read more

I'll start off by saying that I am 100% Puerto Rican and my wife is 100% Dominican. We both spent the majority of our lives down in New York City where Puerto Rican/Dominican cuisine is plentiful. We moved to Rockland County in 2006 and quickly realized that the only real Latin/Caribbean food options were back in the city. That changed this evening! There were seven in our party, and each one of us was absolutely impressed with the flavor, portion, size, presentation, temperature and service. This is not a large restaurant, but I have to tell you, the quality of the dining experience is second to none. The staff are all super friendly and understood the balance between ensuring that our party was satisfied while giving us time and space to enjoy our food and one another. If you enjoy Latin/Caribbean cuisine, a nice plate of rice and beans to accompany, tender pieces of thin steak, covered in onions or, my personal favorite of the evening, the Mofongo, then this is the place for you. My husband ordered white rice with bistec encebollado and beans, which was also amazing. My brother-in-law and father-in-law enjoyed the steak mofongo, and it certainly did not disappoint. The empanadas, flancocho, and flan are a must-try. I swear I felt like I was in Puerto Rico; the food was that good. They had a great playlist that we really enjoyed. My husband and I are New York City born and raised Puerto Ricans who moved to Rockland not that long ago. We have been searching to find a place that serves authentic Spanish/Puerto Rican food with a touch a home but have fallen flat with the places we have visited. Sazon and Pilon, thank you, we can look no further for we found our new go to place. The restaurant is clean, and the staff is friendly, we ordered on line and our food was ready at our pick up time and pipping hot. The food is so flavorful and not salty. The balance is perfect. The rice was fluffy, and fresh tasting. The red beans brought a tear to my eye, as they tasted exactly like the ones my mom made growing up, it had pieces of potato, calabaza (pumpkin) and ham, chefs kiss perfection. The bistec encebollado (steak with onions) was so tender, we were in awe of how amazing it was, so flavorful. The pernil was perfectly seasoned, shredded with slices of red onion, someone please give the chef a hug, you have managed to capture in a few bites of food memories of home cooked meals and we can feel the family love. We can not wait to return and continue our food journey through the menu that offers a huge variety for every taste. Good food. Service was super slow even though the only people present at 3pm on a Friday were my party of 5, and one other couple. But to be fair, there was just one person in the establishment tending to all of us. The food was def worth it though. My favorite thing here is the Chicharron de pollo.
