So we came by here for lunch on our way out of Soldatna, and had an amazing time. We came expecting just some standard Mexican food, but we got so much more. First, we got seated right away and the decor was charming. Standard decor, but with little flourishes that you don't normally encounter. Chips and salsa was on the table quickly, and the salsa was really good. The waitress got our drinks out fast as well (we got Strawberries Daiquiris, though mine was virgin) and I was very impressed with the flavor. I would definitely order that again. I got the deluxe burrito, and the serving was huge. Definitely having an entire meal to bring with me after my meal, and it was really good. My friend got the Colorado burrito, and again, huge and tasty. Service was amazing! She was on the ball with drinks, food and cheques. The sauce for dipping is cold too but both were edible. The house margarita on the rocks was good but better after we added another shot. The fajitas were okay but nothing to write home about. We went to get lunch here on a Saturday around 12:30pm. A little concerned because at that hour, there was only one other customer in the restaurant that we saw. My wife and I had our 4 boys with us. The waitress was very friendly, we were seated immediately. She offered great service. She was very patient with our boys (all about 10 years old). The decor was pretty cool, and the place was clean. Another review mentioned about the outside - I don't really care about that, as long as the inside is clean & nice. We did not have alcoholic beverages, so I can't rate whether the bar was good or bad. The lunch specials were in the menu, but we didn't notice they were only for Monday through Friday. With the place pretty much empty on Saturday at lunch rush, you may want to offer those on the weekend too. The pros: the food was good, but not great. The servings were large. The service, as mentioned, was very friendly & prompt. Clean & pretty interesting decor. The cons: it did take a LONG time for the food to arrive after we ordered. The food was good, but really could have used a kick in the spicy department. Even the "hot" salsa was so not hot that our kids were asking for spicier. The menu was too large. Prices were decent. Not expensive, but not cheap. All in all, I waffled between a 3 & a 4 with this review, but I will go with 4 because of the great waitress. We'll definitely be back, but I would urge the owners to do several things: * speed up food delivery times * spice things up, or at least offer a spicier sauce option on some things * shrink your menu - it's too large! The waitress was super nice and friendly, but the quality of the food was so-so. The free chips and salsa were good, but the salsa was frozen solid so they had to bring us new ones. The hot salsa was not very spicy. My friend got a burrito meal, which looked really good, and I got a small vegetarian pizza that was really big -- could have easily fed 2 or 3 people. But it was very bland, the crust just absolutely flavorless and dry inside. But was extremely wet, too. Maybe it was the water from the raw tomato on top and/or oil from the cheese, but I couldn't hold a piece up without it flopping over. The leftovers I took in the box soaked the cardboard soggy. I should have ordered Mexican food, and if I come here again, that's what I'd order instead. My friend got a blended strawberry margarita that she said was very good. My house red cab was really good, too, but I didn't catch what brand it was. Probably the least-seasoned Mexican food I've had. Since I try to judge all mex equally, I had my usual, burrito/taco combo. I went through a finger or two of salt from the shaker to coax some flavor out of the food. Pretty bland. Maybe they don't want to over-season it for some taste buds. We came here after dipnetting in kenai. the food was decent. The seasoning is flavorful and very nice presentation of the dishes as well. It is a nice and big restaurant with lots of seatings and a huge menu to satisfy your cravings for Hispanic food. The reason why it didn't get such high marks for me is because the service was a bit slow. I'm not sure if it's because it was too busy (though, it wasn't filled when we were there). It's always a bad thing when you walk up to an eatery and there are discarded cigarette butts and dead hanging baskets littering the courtyard. Had we not been in a hurry, I would've turned around and left at that point. Alas, the kids were hungry and we were on a deadline. So, we go in. The lady working as both hostess and waitress was friendly enough. She had that down-home charm that makes a place likable. Unfortunately, we were the only customers in the restaurant--another bad sign--so we had high expectations. The decor was typical Mexican-American.--bright colors, vibrant furnishings and stereotypical Mexican paintings. It seemed clean. We ordered a couple of kids' plates, a couple of combinations, and I had a tamale with beans. My family was satisfied with the enchiladas and tacos, but I'm pretty sure my tamale was the of the same variety as you get from the freezer section of the Costco on Debarr. My recent business trip to Alaska included a stop in Soldotna. With the temperature hovering around -14 degrees, Mexican food seemed like a good idea. Maybe the chiles could warm me up? I have to admit that my expectations were pretty low - how many miles do you think Soldotna is from Mexico? However, once I walked inside I was pleasantly surprised with the colorful decor and friendly, prompt service. The salsa seemed home made, the seafood chile rellano was flavorful, and the rice and beans were good, too. My guy had a burrito that he quickly devoured. By the end of the meal we had forgotten about the sub-zero temperatures outside and were transported to warmer climates. This is not the most authentic Mexican food you will eat. But probably your best bet for lunch on a cold Monday afternoon in the winter in Soldotna. read more

During my business trip to Soldotna I began to crave Mexican food and behold I came upon Don Jose. I have to admit during my visit to Soldotna I have become very jaded with the many restaurants here that serve American, Italian, and Mexican food and all very unappetizing. To make the the story short, Don Jose does Mexican food well. I was very happy with the chicken enchiladas and was very satisfied. I was very disturbed when I looked through the menu further... on the back of the menu was Italian and American dishes. I don't understand this Alaskan complex. If you go to a place named Don Jose you should be going there for Mexican food, period. Why you would want to be served Italian food by a chef who does Mexican food so well is beyond me.
