Delicious food at a great price. This place was recommended to me by one of the baristas at The Foundry Coffee Shop down the street. It's a bit dark inside so if your hearing impaired and need to read lips then this is not a place for you. Otherwise, the atmosphere is fun and the food is delicious! I had the tacos. My husband and I tried dinner here based on the positive yelp reviews. Bottom line: we didn't like it. It was certainly busy during our visit and it wasn't easy to find a table. The chips were just okay. Not the thinner, warm type I prefer. No salt. Two salsas come with the chips: green and a red. I found the red to be very thick on tomato and spicy, but not flavorful. Kind of reminded me of a pasta sauce with jalapeños. Where is the cilantro in this place??? My husband got his usual enchiladas and a taco and I tried the carne asada. Enchiladas were plain and not flavorful. He wasn't too thrilled by the taco either. Carne asada is usually a pretty safe dish, but I wasn't thrilled by that either. Very thin and dry. I had to combine bites with rice and beans just so it had enough moisture to swallow it easily. Pricing is inexpensive, but I certainly would not pay more. I guess I've eaten a lot of Mexican food so after all the positive reviews we were really disappointed. Don't think we will go back. read more

Drive to Tyler from Richardson. Went to Don Juan to pick up a phone order and was told rudely my manager angel that I ordered from the wrong location. I apologized and stated I could place an order now since I'm not familiar with the area. Angel told me rudely NO you can't. You must go to the other location. Mind you there were only 3 customers in his restaurant at the time. I felt racially discriminated, if I want African American I'm sure angel would have been nicer and more helpful. First time here, parking and place was packed. Got there just in time for no wait, sat right down. Place is a hangout for a lot of regulars. Low cost Mexican food with awesome flavor. I love these place but last night Dec 5 my parents took me too eat here for a early bday dinner. So I ordered a mangolada with crown Apple, the waiter tells me we don't serve crown apple! And I ask since when because I have ordered that drink before here, he decided to tell me I was wrong must have been at DJs and don't me they never served it there! Ok first mistake! Then we order our food and I ask for a appetizer also well r food came out first, I ordered fajitas!! They were cold the onions and peppers weren't even cooked all the way and then they decided to bring the appetizer once we were almost done! These was the worst service I have had here and like I said I love these place! I had to get up to ask for to go box for my friend! Omg the FOOD!! Super quesadilla is where it's at! Although their Torres are amazing too! But no matter what you order, you HAVE to get their queso served with Mexican bread! It's like a Mexican grilled cheese! SO good! Order a Big Steve if you dare and have a high alcohol tolerance! Probably best to split that sucker! I don't understand how this place has so many stars. First off we went on a Wednesday night and it was busy and we set a table for a long time or for anyone came over. The main thing that disappointed me was the food. The chicken has no flavor at all it is just like boiled chicken. I don't know if it's because I'm from down south and I'm used to the chicken having so much flavor but we really do didn't eat any of our food it was so bland. The little we did eat we where having to drown it in sauce to get any flavor. The only positive thing I can say about this place is that the caso was good. Walking in you'd think you're about to receive some really good Mexican food but be prepared to be disappointed. I got a smothered burrito and it was smothered in nacho cheese and chili. I got an horchata and I could automatically tell it was made from the powder flavoring you mix with water. We also got a quesadilla but it had mayo inside. Wow. I have visited many of the Mexican restaurants in Tyler and this one takes the cake. The top shelf Margarita, very potent, was delicious. They were happy to bring some straight lime juice and water so my wife and my mother-in-law could dilute theirs. I had the Tacos al Carbon. Perfectly seasoned. Generous portion. Delicious, homemade tortillas - you can choose flour or corn or both - and did I mention they are homemade?? All for $8.99. There are many entree choices under $10 and they offer some specialties pricing into the teens as well. Our service was very attentive and very friendly. The atmosphere is festive but not over the top. But the food....go for the food. If they opened one in the Metroplex I am convinced they would kick some butt! Outstanding Mexican fare at more than reasonable prices. El Charro, Mercado, On the Border....step aside. You don't hold a candle to Don Juan! read more

After nearly three years of living in Tyler, Don Juan's is still one of my faves. They've always been consistent, as I've never had a bad meal (or service) here. You can't go wrong with anything here, and the margaritas add a Holly Holm kick to your liver. Seriously, ask for "the Steve" and see what happens; I dare you. Good solid food, service, and strong margaritas. My only beef is that the tables are really small, and crammed together (especially upstairs). The lure of Don Juan's is unmistakable - when I worked at the Tyler paper, I found myself walking there nearly every day for lunch. Get the chicken quesadilla, simple and packed with jack cheese and hunks of avocado. The rice is thankfully veggie-free (don't you HATE mexican rice with peas in it?) and very tasty, especially coated with their amazing, perfectly goopy queso. It's cheap, quick, and the drinks are gigantic and filled with ice. What more could you want from a tex-mex joint? Also, you MUST ask for a "Big Steve" - one big-ass margarita with something like four shots in it. Tastes amazing and feels delicious, just drink slowly and ask someone else to drive home. :) read more

I'm giving them one star for the chips, they were delicious, and fresh. I'm also giving them one more star for the atmosphere, it was cozy, quiet, and clean. The food on the other hand was extremely disappointing. I got a humongous piece of chicken, but it was the most bland, boring thing I have ever eaten. Then there was the rice which tasted like something I would make. (Which is not good, I'm no cook.) My best friend got something else off the menu and had a similar experience, we wasted 90% of the food on our plates because it was hard to shove down our throats. Eclectic Mexican restaurant on the square. We went on a weeknight and it was pretty busy. The sauce set up is a little bit strange and awkward in my opinion. The super quesadilla with fajita chicken and avocado is pretty good. I would ask for some sour cream or something to go with it. My friend ordered the shrimp tacos and there was no slaw or anything except shrimp. There was a tee-tiny amount of pico de gallo on the side, but no sauce or slaw.
