Don Juan's is great because it offers more traditional tastes of Mexico than other spots in town which serve frozen or Cheese covered everything as 'authentic Mexican' food. If you get the chance read the Tyler Loops story behind the wood carved tables and chairs or maybe you'll be lucky enough to hear it straight from the source during your visit. Don't be upset on a Friday or Saturday if you have to wait-- it's worth it. Also it's always seat yourself so be ready to make a move during peak times. Don Juan's is amazing. There isn't another word to describe this place. Their queso is great. Perfectly spicy...be careful of their hot sauce, it will getcha. When I first started coming here I ordered the chicken and cheese quesadillas. I highly recommend that if you're in the mood for something very filling. Now I order two chicken tacos with their mexican cheese and avocado. YUM! I could eat these everyday. Their staff is great. Always consistent and very quick. I can be in and out in less than 25 minutes most days. Unless it's Dollar Taco Night (it's very crowded). On Wednesday's (all day) you can get one of their perfectly crafted tacos for only a dollar. I leave having only spent around $7...no I don't get 7 tacos, I just must get the queso anytime I'm there. Drinks are great and the environment is fun! Been here two times in the last two days and it was so delicious. If you are looking for authentic tasting Mexican food this is the place to go. This is a sweet little gem on the square in downtown and I just love it. Everything about this place is fantastic, the food, margaritas, staff and Decor. The decor is so cute, hand carved and painted chairs and tables, little piñatas hanging all colorful from the ceiling. It's so festive in here. The Mexican rice is the best I have ever tasted, refried beans are very tasty and you cannot go wrong with the Original Mexican tacos. I cannot express how much I Love the tacos, they are so well seasoned and juicy, loads of flavor and fresh ingredients, just so delicious. I have lived in New Mexico for 5 years and have not had Mexican food this good since I left there back in 2005. The prices are so amazing. Tacos are $1.55 each. I can't wait to go back and try some other stuff on the menu, like the fajitas because the table behind us ordered them and they looked and smelled really yummy. The chips and salsa are great too and they have a red sauce as well as a green, both a bit spicy but I like them. My mom had the chicken enchiladas with beans and rice when she ate with us the second day we went and she said they were fabulous. Everything is good. Give them a try, you won't regret it. I have not been upstairs but there is a separate upstairs dining area and bar that I will check out on a later date. Prices were great, for my husband and I on our date night check with a large size margarita and food was $34 and for my family of five it was $52, not including tip. Affordable and delicious. Really the best Mexican restaurant I know of in Texas. Authentic enchiladas styled the same as the enchiladas in the state of Puebla in. Mexico. I lived there as a kid and these enchiladas are spot on. The green sauce is amazing but I highly suggest you try the Emoladas. Don Juan's makes a great mole sauce. Terrible! Wish I could give zero stars. Chicken fajita seemed to be reheated. Salsa was awful. And service rude and slow. Check your ticket. They charged our card with another tables twice as expensive meal and then wouldn't give us a credit slip. Finally got a hand written note from another waiter. Manager wouldn't come to the table. I ate there yesterday at the one on the square. I am a nurse and I had gotten off work and just wanted some good food before heading home. I ordered the Carne Asada. The food was great. I couldn't eat it all so I asked for a box. I was charged for a box to take my leftovers in. I was charged for a cup to take my tea in. I asked about taking home my leftover hot sauce that they will be throwing in the trash and that was going to cost me another two dollars. So I took my stuff with me and left no tip. I am a great tipper usually. I can't believe that they made me pay twice for my stuff. How is that ok? read more

We went there because the reviews were so good. Both salsas were really hot, so my husband couldn't eat any, and I had to stop eating it after about 5-6 chips, and I'm not a wimp when it comes to spice. As for meals, my husband liked his Carne asada but I didn't think his meat had much flavor. I ordered the chile relleno and it had SO MUCH grease in the breeding from it being deep fried, you could actually take it off, squeeze it, and fill up a salsa cup. (I actually did this) It upset my stomach so much after eating less than half, I had to vomit in the bathroom. The rice was decent. My daughter had the chorizo and eggs and wasn't impressed. She said the chorizo tasted funny and now has a stomach ache. I'm writing this 20 minutes after leaving, so I'm hoping we don't get sick. You can't know if your food will be very good and served hot as it should be or if it will be straight out of the refrigerator with too little time in the microwave. After a couple of years of hoping for the best I got tired of my order being served at room temperature, so I quit dining here for about nine months. For nostalgia's sake I gave it a try a couple of months ago. It was great. Not only that my server remembered my favorite dish and ordered it for me. OK, we're back! Two other visits were just as good. My wife had also given up on Don Juan (on the square) but I convinced her to give it another try tonight. It's Saturday, they have to be on their game, right? I believe that this restaurant is hyped up. The food was mediocre, servers were pretty bad (I'll get into that) but their deal is pretty irresistible: dollar taco night on Wednesdays and two dollar margaritas. Which is the main reason why people go there. Anyways, but the food is just okay to me, could have been better. The servers took forever just to bring out water for the table. And took another 10 years to get refills. It wasn't even the fact that he was busy, it was the fact that he was talking to his coworkers... I have traveled to Tyler for work for about 9 years now and, eating out every meal, have eaten at most of the restaurants there. I've eaten here about 10 times. I'm never quite sure what to expect at this place. It fluctuates from adequate to dang good, but usually somewhere closer to adequate. Shrimp cocktail I have tried a few times, the shrimps are pretty flavorless. The Parillada grill combo is huge and pretty cheap for all the meat you get. Expect to feed 3-5 people. I think Djs is the best Mexican you'll find in Tyler. However, I wouldn't call it your typical Tex mex if that's what you're wanting. Their queso, chips, and salsa are my favorite but again - not your typical texmex. I recommend getting the chicken enchilada with queso + queso fresco on top or the steak tacos. I even mix my rice with the queso. Margs are great as well.
