El pollo sabroso is a very authentic hole in the wall restaurant located in a nice neighborhood near Target, Marshall's, and Lidl. Most servers speak Spanish so it may be useful to have some Spanish handy when ordering. The food was decent. It was fresh and very hot when I received it, but it was satisfying to see the cheese pull of the queso lol. The pupusa itself wasn't very flavorful, but when I paired it with the two sauces they gave me, it gave it an extra kick of flavor. I ordered a 1/4 chicken meal with dark meat (the only way to go honestly). I asked for plantains and rice on the side, an extra side of black beans and two pupusas. The pork pupusa was amazing as well as the plantains and beans. The rice and chicken could have been a bit more flavorful but I still enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the combination of the green spicy sauce and the sweet white sauce. So delicious when dipped with a pupusa. I paid $16 for all of this which is super reasonable for the amount of food. This is definitely enough for two meals (for me). The man taking my order up front was friendly, patient, and helpful. Personally, I was hoping for pollo saltado but they don't serve it and so I settled on the chicken and chorizo combination plate instead. This was one of those times when Plan B turned out even better! The chicken was good, tender, nicely seasoned, juicy...but the CHORIZO was the real star! If you know Mexican or even Portuguese style chorizo, you'll have to erase that from your thinking. This chorizo is made of seasoned ground pork (?) split lengthwise and grilled to perfection. SO GOOD. We happened on this place on our way to another restaurant. The Peruvian chicken was seasoned exceptionally well. I got the black beans n rice, which were quite tasty. We also had the lomo saltado and it was amazing. The yuca is cooked well and it's delicious. If you weren't careful, you'd walk right by the place. My only 2 complaints are very small. I didn't like the rice but Im a bit picky when it comes to rice. I've stopped through El Pollo Sabroso the last few times I've been in Columbia Heights and will probably keep it in regular rotation. This place is easy to overlook and has an unassuming interior. I have to agree with many others that the service has never been particularly friendly, but the cashier has never been rude, either. As far as cleanliness, it's hit or miss. The last time I was here, they didn't clean either of the dirty tables the whole time I was there (which was a while, as I was having a really leisurely lunch). And this will sound like a strange comment, but I've never been in a place with so many flies. It's really kind of unnerving... That said, the yucca fries are absolutely perfect and delicious, and if you don't order them, you are all types of missing out. As a general rule, I have always found their chicken to be a bit on the dry side, but not so much as to turn my smile upside down. The sauces are EXCELLENT, especially the white one, which goes great with both chicken and yucca. The green sauce has a kick of peppercorn, but it isn't overpowering. They also have Jarritos, which is the only kind of pop (or "soda," if you must) that I not only find tolerable but actually like. Wherever Jarritos is found, so am I! I would rate it four stars, but the cleanliness and service ding the restaurant for me. Regardless, j know I'll be back again to snap up more yucca fries and figure out what's in the white sauce and order a gallon of it to take home! read more

I asked for my fries and yucca crispy and instead got unsalted undercooked fries, and half of the yucca cooked with the other half undercooked. Chicken was obviously not fresh since some of the edges of the white meat had started to dry out a little bit. Save yourself the trouble and just keep walking. The one in Mt. Love love love this place. I was with four other teachers who were craving Latin food, and this was the perfect place to enjoy each other's company as well as enjoy delicious food. The menu includes a plethora of options so your cravings will be satisfied. Now, I've always ordered fried whole fish from restaurants that offer them so I knew exactly what I wanted. For $11, you can get a fried whole fish!! And it comes with rice and salad. I didn't want the dressing on my salad but I ended up enjoying it actually. As far as the fried fish, it was what I expected. It was a bit fishy (if that makes sense), but I still devoured it. I absolutely love coming here for a quick lunch or dinner. I always get the half chicken (or whole chicken if I'm splitting with people - it's a better deal) and a side(s) of yuca. It's some of the best Peruvian chicken I've had in the DMV, comparable only to Don Pollo. The chicken always comes out quick which is definitely appreciated when I'm hungry. It's seasoned consistently every time which matters to me when it comes to places like this. The sauces are great, especially the green sauce which I find to be spicier than most other chicken spots. My favorite part however is the yuca fries. Their sometimes a little inconsistent with them, they can be extremely crispy at times (jackpot!) or a little mushier, but always tasty. I definitely recommend this place to anyone walking by and in the mood for a quick bite. They have ample seating but since I live so close I always get take-out. I find their yuccas to be the best in town because it's always fresh and crispy. I've tried a other items like their shrimp which tastes amazing with their white sauce, beef soup and their fried whole fish. My mom loves their fried tilapia that she can actually finish the entire thing all by herself - yeah....thanks for sharing mom! My FAVORITE Peruvian chicken spot in the area! I used to live right down the street, so I've eaten here A LOT. Most of the time, I would order for pick up and my food was always ready in the amount of time they told me it would take. Not the biggest space, but you never really have to worry about not having a table when dining in. They have a couple of TVs that usually show soccer matches or some type of Latin American programming. The chicken is always on point, but a delicious alternative that I get from time to time, is their Torta Mexicana. It's essentially a steak sandwich with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and avocado. We called to speak to a manager and/or supervisor they put me on a hold and hung up. When we attempted to call back they ignored my calls until I had to switch to another number for them to answer. They first acted oblivious of this issue without any remorse, then accused me of lying saying they don't make Grill Chicken Salads when I Cleary ordered it and receieved it. I will be reporting this to the health inspector as well as tell all to be careful with this restaurant and always inspect your food. read more

I walked past Chipotle, which had a line winding all the way through the restaurant, to get here. On my way back home I saw the line again and thought, "suckers!!" I got the quarter chicken dark with fried yuca, it also comes with a little salad. Don't chose between yuca and fried plantains! I got an order of fried plantains as well and my total, with tax and the plastic bag, was $8.05. The chicken was delicious, perfectly seasoned and juicy, though the fried yuca was hit or miss. Some pieces were dry and tough, others were moist and exactly what I expected from the rave reviews. It was later in the evening and the place wasn't crowded, so I wouldn't be surprised if these had sat around a while. The plantains on the other hand were amazing. Did you know that I had never tried yucca frita until my first time at Pollo Sabroso a few years ago? Well I LOVE IT NOW!! The place is super no frills (borderline dirty). The check out people could be friendlier, but they are efficient. The price is right (around $7 for a big plate of food), and the flavors can be inconsistent. On my most recent trip, the yucca was cut way too thick, so the inside is barely cooked and has a weird texture. It may just be a personal preference, but I prefer the smaller pieces. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to go to Pollo Sabroso, but when I'm in the hood it gets the job done. read more

Finally, I had something to compare El Pollo Rico to. And here's my conclusion: Skin: Better seasoned and crispier at Rico. One point Rico. Chicken: Much more moist and delicious at Sabroso. One point Sabroso. Sides: Actually come with your whole chicken at Sabroso and they include fried yuca, fries or rice. Hell yes, for fried yuca. Sabroso takes the lead. Sauces: At Rico the green sauce is grainy pureed, whereas Sabroso is creamy and much more flavorable and spicy. Another point Sabroso. Drink: Rico had canned Inca Cola, Sabroso had plastic bottled Inca. I much prefer soda out of the can. Rico, you win. Prices: Because of the sides coming with, definitely more for your buck at Sabroso. Chalk up another for Sabroso on the chalkboard. Location: Living in Columbia Heights, without a car, Sabroso is a clear winner. Albeit my experiences didn't differ by much, my *overall* Peruvian chicken experience was clearly best had at El Pollo Sabroso, but I highly recommend both places. read more

Having lived in Northern Virginia for ages, I was absolutely spoiled for choice in polla a la brasa restaurants. However, I've been seriously disappointed with the options in D.C. It's hard to find, and the options - especially downtown - are overpriced and mediocre. Enter Pollo Sabroso. It's cheap, it's authentic, and it's delicious. You can walk out of the restaurant satiated for under $10. The chicken is tender and oh-so flavorful, and the yucca is perfectly cooked. Everything else on the menu is pretty outstanding, too. Try the sandwiches if you want something a little different, but still delicious and filling. Pollo Sabroso's one failing? The horchata. However, I've yet to have good horchata anywhere in D.C.! read more

I knew I was in for a treat when I realized I was the only English speaker in the restaurant. I decided to not order more than I needed and got the quarter chicken (dark meat, of course) with a side of fried yucca. You also get a salad (and definitely have them top it with their dressing). Everything was incredible. The chicken was moist inside and the skin was super crispy and flavorful. The dressing was creamy. The yucca were perfectly fried and better than any I have ever had. You get a side of green sauce (kind of like a tomatillo) and a side of the same sauce they use for the dressing. All of this goodness brought to you be the low price of 5 and change. So after a little poking around on Yelp, I decided to give Sabroso a try. We had spent pretty much the entire day on our bikes, so we were tired and hungry. We made our way up the hill, called a few friends, and went in. This place doesn't exactly have décor as a priority, but when it comes to good food, neither do I. Three people decided to split a whole chicken, rice, beans, and plantains, and the fourth got a quarter chicken with chorizo. This ended up being a massive quantity of food, and we were all a bit intimidated by the overflowing trays we brought back to our table. The chicken was delicious--moist and well-seasoned. The skin could have been a little crispier, but it was by no means rubbery. Both the green sauce and the white sauce were very tasty. I thought the green sauce was great, though a few thought it was a little too spicy. The rice was actually surprisingly tasty, and the plantains were everything fried plantains should be. Lunch time was quite busy as there were not enough seats available for all the people coming in. I ordered a half chicken with a side of yucca whereas the gf ordered a pupusa entree. The chicken was a bit dryer than compared to El Pollo Rico or Super Chicken, however it was still good. The skin was also crispy as well. I will say the yucca here was much better than Super Chicken. The pupusas were also quite good and better than I've had elsewhere. Total was about $10 with the Scoutmob deal! Otherwise the total would've been about $15. **3.50 stars** Been here twice now, and have been pretty happy with both visits minus a few details... I can't give El Pollo Sabroso many stars based on the price ($12.00 for a few medium grilled shrimp, fried yucca, and iceberg salad). I miss being able to use the ScoutMob deal. Without it this place is almost not worth it when there are other, much less pricy, places within walking distance; Adam Express being one of them. I have been happy with the seasoning used here. They're pretty well balanced and don't overpower the meats. The sauces for great too, but appear to vary in heat intensity each day. The green sauce is awesome but the first time I had it it pack a little bit of a punch, while the second time it almost knocked me out in the first bite. Not that big of a deal. Just something to be aware of! The first time I had the fried yucca it was so very tender on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside. The second time it was a little underdone. This was pretty disappointing after the first experience. If they could get some consistency I would go back for just the yucca on a regular basis. read more
