One pf my favorites in the Columbia heights for pupusas and other El Salvadoran food. I love pupusas and Sopa De Res it was so good. The been and cheese pupusas are Nice and soft with flavor filling. Great cheese and beans that is rich and flavorful. Sopa De Res is great tender beef with a great broth and vegetables. Perfectly balanced and cooked. Service is super friendly and nice whenever I go. Also, it has a nice neighborhood feel inside I feel like Im visiting someone's home for a meal. read more

Expected mediocre service and somehow still came out disappointed. We did not feel welcomed and would actively recommend others to avoid if possible. On this cool evening night, we were in the area for some delicious food and as we have heard about the large population of Salvadorans in DC, we decided to venture into dining at a local Salvadoran mom and pop. We came across Gloria's Pupuseria and with our previous experiences with pupusas, we were ecstatic to try some local flare to this delicious cuisine. Mind you, this area has a ton of great places to eat! After finally getting parking in the crowded streets, we walked over to the glow of the shop and walked down the stairs into a small, casual and cozy dining space. The tables weren't thoroughly cleaned yet but we decided to move some of the dirty dishes to an adjacent table and took our seats at the big table. In hindsight, red flag number one. The staff greeted us curtly and handed out some menus and asked if we wanted anything to drink. Instinctively, we asked for waters thinking they'd serve us the typical tap water most places serve but instead, she handed us some bottled waters instead. Perhaps it was the language barrier but in hindsight, this would have been red flag number two. We also took a trip to their restroom and they looked like they were in pretty bad shape. The facilities are bare minimum - old soap, if any, lacking toilet paper refills, and no paper towels. It was atrocious. Red flag number three. With menu items on the wall and the ones listed in the menu, we took some time to peruse the offerings. We ended up ordering a variety of items but they had so many to choose from (pupusa, tamales, tacos, burritos, fajitas, quesadillas). After placing our order, we waited for a bit for the food to be prepared and served. Little did we know, more shenanigans were just brewing. We decided to pass out napkins to the folks in our party and having our little kid help, they took a few napkins out at a time and laid some flat out as placemats. An innocent thing to do for a four year old but an older staff member came around and just took the napkin dispenser away without a word. We thought that maybe they were refilling them or offering some to other tables but our dispenser was relatively full already and other vacant tables had unused napkin dispensers available. More likely than not, they didn't approve of our child's behavior. Red flag, four. While we continue to wait for our food, someone decided to put money in the electric jukebox and played some music. The jukebox was extremely loud for just a small place and made it a very unpleasant experience. They also have a TV which broadcasted a soccer match but at this point, I just wanted to eat and be done with this place. When the food came, everything was nice and hot. The pupusas looked a bit on the oily side, but you can tell it was oozing with cheese. The pupusas were definitely the highlight of the meal and best eaten soon after they're made so we scarfed them down. The tamales looked unappealing and tasted bland. The beef fajitas and lengua rice and beans plate had decent portions and tasted great. Light on the protein, however. When we decided to get the check, we realized that the prices did not match what was listed on the menu nor what was displayed on the wall. They didn't really give much of an explanation except maybe they were outdated but this red flag (number five, if you're still keeping count), was the last straw for us, but unfortunately, it was too late for us to quit. We paid, left, and vowed not to come back. Overall, Gloria's Pupuseria is strictly only good for their pupusa and for take out. Dining in this place is a nightmare and not worth your time or energy. If you're looking for a more welcoming dining space that has the food quality to match, well you're in luck because there are plenty of Salvadoran eateries in DC. Take your pick and only after you've exhausted all options or are literally right around the corner should you consider Gloria's. Even then, I might just consider eating a different cuisine altogether. read more

This is one of the best breakfasts you can get in the DMV. My favorite is (imma be real I forgot what it's called and I didn't get a picture of the menu) the chorizo egg scramble with beans, crema, and plantains. The plantains are my favorite in the city. Just sweet enough and flat, I prefer a flat plantain. The atmosphere is also extremely charming and friendly. It's a basement restaurant so the low ceilings give a cozy feel. Also! Gloria'S Pupuseria. On overall we had a good Expirience. We ordered take out, the server who took our order was nice and kind, there a couple seating inside, and everything looks very clean. We order pupusas, yuca con chicharrón and two horchatas. The pupusas were soo good, we tried frijoles con queso and loroco. They have few flavors but they nailed them. Best ones I have tried so far in the dmv and I'm Salvadoran and very picky about pupusas. I did not enjoy the salsa because it was the kind of salsa they put on panes con pollo but with the repollo and everything together it was alright. The yuca and chicharrón and it was good. The horchatas were not my cup of tea. We will be back for more pupusas and maybe try other items. If you haven't tried pupusas this is the place I will tell you to go. read more

A hole-in-the wall with some of the best pupusas in DC. The service isn't great, but the prices for pupusas are excellent. I had the horchata, which is very sweet but good. I also tried the Salvadorean enchiladas (one beef, one chicken), which are actually tostadas. The beef enchilada was delicious, with perfectly cooked beef, but the chicken enchilada disappointed. What everyone else said. Hole in the wall, eclectic decor, locals enjoying a meal, no frills menu... You know this place is legit. An employee kindly took our order after we explored the menu for a bit. I was surprised not to see any combo platters but happy to order a few things a la carte. Pupusas, tamales, and enchilada. Everything was fresh, ample portions and fast! We waited maybe ten minutes? The corn tamales came in a white sauce I was not familiar with but I have happy to find lots of cortado and tomato sauce. Beautiful little hole in the wall has wonderful Salvadoran food! Attentive, prompt and pleasant service. Pupusas are freshly made, plump and tasty, and a tad oily (which I like), great toothsome texture. Tacos arrive brimming, topped with grated cheese and fresh avocado slice. Family and pet friendly atmosphere. Quite urban, very clean and tidy with a strong neighborhood vibe. Next time I plan to order the beef soup, their specialty. (Number 1 on the wall menu.) My first visit was on a hot day, so I passed on the soups. But I did notice that most of the customers were eating from large soup bowls and the wall menu appears to feature the soups. Extensive variety of menu items make you want to come back to try. Both our eat-in and take-out experiences were excellent. As a veteran pupusa aficionado in the 14/U and columbia heights area, this is my first five star pupusa review in the DC area. Order: Cheese pupusa, chicken enchiladas, and corn tamale Key takeaways: 1) Pupusas were soft and moist - great flavor, not dried out, great filling:dough ratio. 2) Chicken enchiladas here are not chicken enchiladas elsewhere - this was more like an open faced tostada and doesn't really have anything like an "enchilada sauce". However, the chicken itself was absolutely perfect. Outstanding seasoning and flavor, tender meat, perfectly cooked. 3) I find myself wishing they'd offer a chicken and cheese pupusa 4) Good red sauce here. Added great flavor, and was even better when mixed with a bit of sour cream 5) Wished the service was just a bit friendlier, but the food was fast and delicious and very reasonably priced. 6) Loved the corn tamale. This place is a gem. I always like the mom and pops kind of places where you know your gonna get a good home cooked meal. Had the chicken tamales that were filled with potatoes and big chunks of chicken, the chicken breast and shrimp were also a wonderful meal so much grill flavor in each bite. The beans were ok nothing special and the cheese they give you on the side of this dish isn't especially my favorite either very sour in taste but my brother liked it. Great food, great service. It is a little pricey for Latin food but what can you do, you're in the middle of DC, everything's expensive in D.C. Drove an hour and a half through traffic just to get here. My only wish is that they were closer to me but it was well worth the drive. read more

From the outside it looked like a little family owned place and when we walked inside I was right. It was like walking into someone's family gathering mid meal. Spanish music was blaring from the jukebox. There was a table with a large family, kids running around and a telenovela playing on the tv mounted on the wall. I loved it! Ok, I didn't love the music so much, but only because it was super loud. My friend and I sat down and looked at the pictures on the wall trying to decide what to order. Menus were brought to us a moment later. We ordered pork and cheese pupusas, a tamale, plantains a beer and horchata. I can't resist horchata when I see it on the menu. I noticed that the horchata tasted exactly the same as the one I had at another spot on 14th/U. It had a hint of almond flavor. I'm now wondering if it's regional addition because I'm in an El Salvadorian and not a Mexican place. The pupusas were oozing with cheese and the pork was tender and flavorful. I didn't try the tamale, but the plantains were good. Then after I ordered the lady that took it made fun of me for being American in Spanish (which I speak but she assumed I didn't) Then when I left the guy opened the door for me again and said he was in love with me and that my boyfriend must enjoy me bc he so would. Hey!! This is the first episode of Big Schlims Lite Pocket Meals!!! Once a week I'm finding good food that's $10 and under, that's not the norm, and will satisfy your palate & POCKETS!!! Aite so I found this spot, on my way to another spot... @glorias_pupuseria !!! I'm glad I stopped...the pink awning caught my eye, it's a bright spot on a block with drab colors. I went in, got my food, and went IN!! So they serve up traditional Salvadorean & Mexican foods, so their menu is lengthy. Their menu ranges from Tamales ($2), shrimp nachos ($13), chili con queso (s-$2.50), a grilled Salmon Chimichurri salad ($13), to their Tex-Mex chicken taco dinner ($12), Enchiladas (with your choice of beef, chicken, shrimp or veggie $11-$15), Quesadillas ($10-$14), to much much more (go peep the menu on Google they're there). This spot was a random eatery I just stepped up in (as most of my spots are), so there were many other inexpensive items I would've copped, but due to a slight language barrier ( poquito espanol) i didn't know they had the other Lite Pocket menu items. Nonetheless I copped their delicious Pupusa's !! I got the pork, veggie, cheese, and chicken and cheese for $10 straight!! It came with a spicy coleslaw, and this sauce that remains nameless until a expert tells me what it was. Y'all, this was a good find, I was full after 1, and a half pieces, and they all hit the spot!! A tad bit greasy, but delicious at the same time, I appreciated this meal. The slaw and sauce were a perfect blend to each pupusa, that slaw (which I don't normally like) rounded everything out with a crunch. Customer service was ok...there were a couple divinely looking grandma's in there, side eyeing me, and this place stayed packed with patrons. Know what you want before you get in...look them up, it'll make it easier on you. Parking was metered on $14 St, uptown...so guard ya grill. Ever since I moved from Alexandria, I've had a hard time finding pupusas comparable to my all time favorite mom and pop spot. However, what I did find was dry ass customer service, a smelly (like dirty mop water) restaurant, horrible juke box music, watered down horchata, thick pupusas with little filling, and a resounding HELL NO I will never go back. 1.5 stars. One of the worst meals I've had in a long time. We started out with the mixed (pork/cheese) pupusas. If this was all we'd gotten, I would probably have given this place three stars. They didn't have great flavor (or that much flavor at all), but they were griddled cheese cakes with meat, so what's not to like. I ordered the shredded beef entree, my boyfriend got chicken fajitas. The shredded beef was basically inedible - it was chunks of unseasoned shredded beef mixed with egg, it mostly tasted like an omelet. The chicken fajitas consisted of decently charred chicken with a few pieces of pepper, onions, and tomato. Both came with beans (which tasted like something straight out of a can) and rice (which tasted like old chicken stock) and undercooked stale corn tortillas. As some others have noted, waitress definitely rounded up/overcharged (ie, we were charged $8 for the order of 3 pupusas, which we were told was a normal order, even though the menu listed them at $2.50). They will take cards for the meal but only cash for tips. Service was fine. read more

I had not eaten since yesterday afternoon, and I wanted to try a meal that reminded me of my time in El Salvador. I may have visited this restaurant twice before, so it's been a little while, but I can tell you that not much jas changed. I came in around mid-day and every table was occupied except one, so I quickly grabbed it. Their idea of a sald is much different than what I have been accustomed to, and it was basically some lettuce mixed with onikns and tomatoes, and nooo dressing! This little basement hole in the wall (seats 24) is right in my hood, ordered to go there for the first time last night and really enjoyed the experience. They had the open sign off, but when we walked to the door the welcomed us even though it was past their hours. Opening the door releases a mouth-watering aroma, it felt as if I was walking into someone's home at dinner time. They had family members about and we're cooking for them. I had a cheese papusa and platanos, the amount of food was perfect for my roommate and I to split. Both came with a side of beans, which were so delicious, something about them was like none I have ever had before. I also really enjoyed the rice, not typical of most hispanic places, it was darker and had a hearty rich flavor that I cannot exactly discribe at the moment, but it was DELISH! Little-Amanda and I split a yucca & ribs platter, and doubled up on horchatas, pupusas, and tongue tacos. The tacos were first out, and the pupusas bookended the platter because they're handmade fresh right there. I found the horchata less offensive, but would refrain from ordering it again here; different twist in flavor and too mellow in spicing. Tongue taco was a winner, the meat was cooked to perfection, the add-ons were generous enough to strain the semi-thick corn tortillas, and the inclusion of the avocado wedge was a pleasant surprise. Curtido had the nice pickled crunch that I liked as a refreshing counterpart. My pupusa was better than Amanda's, since the dough was thinner; I'd be fine getting this again if I weren't hungry enough for an entree. Yucca was crisped nicely but noticeably greasy, and the ribs were cooked dryer than I'd prefer. I meant to test-drive the rice and beans on our companions' plates but by sheer quantity we were already well on our way to induced food coma. Cash only. Bottled water instead of tap. Fairly small joint that can easily get warm from the kitchen on a hot day. Two tables able to seat larger parties, and the rest of the tables are mostly 2-seaters with a few available for 4-tops. Telanovela showing on the TV in the corner. Eff their jukebox, it's crazy loud. I'm not dinging them for service; it took ages for us to get the bill, but by the time we were ready to leave a few groups had just come in for a late dinner. Despite limited breadth of communication, she read all our improvisational signals just fine and checked on us appropriately during the lull. Besides, the vibe of the place reflected the relaxed family kitchen attitude of not worrying about turning tables and just letting your customers idle as much as they want after their meals. I loved this place because I knew it was going to be authentic. This definitely helps with the homesickness if you're a temporarily displaced Chicano lol. The outside looks like a house and when you walk in it feels like you've been invited over to a friends home because their mom was making pupusas that weekend ‍‍ (yassss Queen!) There were two men (could have been my tíos) watching the game and having beer in the corner while the employees prepared ingredients and exchanged tips and stories on their health insurance plans. My queer latinx heart skipped a beat when I saw none other than an homage to the queen of techno Cumbia herself, Selena Quintanilla. I pulled up a seat right under her portrait and braced myself for what I knew was going to be a delicious experience. I had 2 pupusas de loroco which were everything I needed. The sizes is then were good, not too small and big enough to eat 2 and feel satisfied. I was super happy to have found such a comforting environment.
