This was my wife & my second time here. The first one was a loooong time ago, but we both recall everything was excellent that time. We both remembered getting the salchipapas & they were great for something so simple. This time my wife got the lechon & I cannot remember the name of mine (it was a sandwich with steak, onions & fries on it It's new & our server said it was her first favorite & my wife's was her second.) Both of these were outstanding!! I don't like soggy fries, but these didn't get too soggy, but did have a lot of flavor. We are seriously get back here sooner rather than later. The service was great! Everyone was friendly & the prices weren't too bad. Best Peruvian food in Indianapolis. Only open on weekends currently (Saturday & Sunday) and only if they are not catering. Always call ahead to see if they are open to avoid being disappointed. Make sure to try an Inca Kola (something similar but better than a Cream Soda) and Alfajor (sold at counter - Peruvian Cookie). For an appetizer I recommend the Empanada. If you have never had Peruvian food my recommendation is to start with the Lomo Saltado platter or sandwich. read more

Our foodie group came to Don Juan V's sandwiches for some lunch today and it was quite the experience. I had heard nothing but good things about this place, so I was very happy to have the opportunity to try their sandwiches. This is a very small space, with a very small kitchen, so it takes a minute for the food to come out, but it is done per order and very fresh, so it is worth the wait. The ambiance is old fashioned in my mind, but very cute and suitable for a sandwich place. I ordered the Milanesa de Polo Sandwich, which is a chicken tenderloin sandwich, and a side of the fried sweet potatoes. The food actually came out in a decent amount of time,so I was shocked and surprised, but very pleased at the same time. As expected, the food was incredible and terrific like I thought it would be. The sandwich was huge and had to use a knife and fork to eat it. The fried sweet potatoes were excellent and had a nice texture. They were very flavorful. The sandwich tasted amazing and was one of the best chicken tenderloin sandwiches I have ever had since living in Indy. Now I see why everyone loves this place so much, because the sandwiches are high quality and just so perfect!! Our server was wonderful and gave great recommendations on the menu items. Her recommendations were spot on and everyone enjoyed their sandwiches. The steak is also incredible, so I would highly recommend the Lolo Supreme sandwich. Don Juan V's sandwiches is a wonderful mom and pop business in Indy that is worth checking out if you are looking for a fresh good sandwich. Given it is a small venue, you may have to wait a bit for your food to be prepared and delivered to your table, so will need to have some patience if you dine inside, but trust me, it is worth it and you will not be disappointed. I've been wanting to try this place after seeing it mentioned so often. The surroundings are nothing fancy, but the food and friendly service are so worth it. Only open on Saturday and Sunday for now, we arrived about 11:30 and were the first ones there. Photos on the wall help to give you an idea of what the sandwiches look like. So excited to share this place with you all, a must try if you enjoy tasty lime marinated seafood and traditional Peruvian lomo saltado (beef strips stir fried with French fries and tomatoes in au jus served with white rice). I've been looking at reviews for this place thinking "What on earth could be so special about sandwiches? " Well, asked and answered. I finally made my way in here and I am hooked. I still don't know why these sandwiches are so freaking good - they just are. I started out with the empanada. To my surprise it had powdered sugar on my beef empanada. I was suspicious... however; one bite and my worries were gone. So much savory beefy filling, so yummy. The powdered sugar just adds a bit of interest to it, but it does not take away from the flavor. Also to my surprise I found out that there are raisins in it. Now I do not usually enjoy meat with fruits of any kind, but this works surprisingly well. I will definitely order an empanada again on my next visit. Be careful though, these are served so fresh, you may want to bite into it carefully, I almost burned my mouth on it. For my sandwich I ordered the Asado, pot roast. OMG, what a delicious sloppy mess this is. Thankfully they brought lots of napkins. Slices upon slices of super tender meat swimming in lovely au jus and those marinated onions on top... Bite into one side, the toppings swell out the other side, the juices dripping, dang this is good. It's not spicy but definitely not bland, loads of taste on this one. And I suggest dipping the bun into the juice drippings before each bite, you won't regret it. I also had a bite of the Pollo Saltado, I might have that next time... oh wait , then I don't have room for the Asado, maybe both? Decisions, decisions. Deserves an updated review, because Don Juan V's has my heart. They had their Pavo sandwich which I have been absolutely DYING to try for years and it's always sold out -- and I know why! The flavors on this turkey are simply divine. It was a smidge dry, but I didn't even mind because of how flavorful the spices, criolla, and mustard came together. Per usual, we got the yuka fries (because it's a crime if you don't) and the chicha morada (the peruvian drink) and as expected they HIT. This family-owned and operated shop deserves so much attention, not only because of the incredible food -- but the service! They're so kind, quick, and eager to make your experience a good one. Everything was delicious! Highly recommend the anticuchos and lomo saltado! Both have a good smoky flavor to them. They didn't have tallarín saltado when I went but I'll just have to come back for it. We also tried the ceviche which was good but I craved a little more acidity to it! Delicious, what a great find on the outskirts of Indianapolis. The place looked like a converted auto shop possibly. The table we were sitting at was in the garage area, as there was a garage door up leading to the outside seating area. The small kitchen was just in a corner of the restaurant, a small space but cooking up big flavors. We ordered yuca fries, empanada, chicharron sampler, asado sandwich and milanesa de pollo. The favorite was the chicharron sampler- tender pieces of pork belly layed atop a plantain and topped with the Peruvian salsa- marinated red onions on top. The yuca fries came out hot and fresh to order. The asado sandwich was just okay, supposed to be like a Peruvian pot roast, the meat was a bit too dry for my taste. Good portions and tasty food. It's kind of located out on its own, not much around it. But the restaurant boasts some really good dishes. I was in Indy for a weekend and noticed they have that ginormous chicken Milanesa which resembled a Indy staple Tenderloin sandwich. It was not made of pork, but chicken, and it was indeed HUGE. The thinness of the chicken made the fillet nice and crispy. It's comical how small the standard bun looked against it, because the bun was actually a pretty decent size. It was ok seasoned, but I think could have been jazzed up a little more as it was just standard on the toppings. Maybe some of their pickled onions would have made it most excellent. The asado (Peruvian sliced Pot roast) featured tender sliced beef Pot roast, with some mustard and a tomato paste based sauce (probably from the roast). Some nice onions round it out. It was a hearty eat, and would normally be leftovers if I was having it alone. It was messy though with all the sauce. Should eat more like knife and fork to keep from the drippings down my forearms. The beef Empanada was flaky and had a tasty ground beef filling with some beans mixed in. Good texture on the pastry, a very slight cumin taste. Chicharon Appetizer was the star for me. Nice marbled sliced pork garnished with pickled red onions on a sweet potato. It all works Really Really well. It hits the senses nicely. Yucca Frito was popular amongst my family, it went really fast, good texture, sort of like a sweeter potato. I liked the value and portions. The kitchen is small so if you're arriving for peak time, get your order in promptly. The restaurant has plenty of seating inside with only two high chairs though. The decor is with canvas prints of Peru, and what resembles a roadside tin shed. read more

This restaurant is located on the side of a strip mall. This place is top notch. The staff is friendly and their food is amazing. They have a small menu packed with some tasty food. They have a decent sized private parking lot and a dining area if you wanted to eat in. I saw what appeared to be a patio area out front of the restaurant that would probably be booming when the weather is good. They have hispanic music playing outside while I was there. Also, the staff there was very friendly and helpful and they place was clean. I ordered the Lomo Especial with a side of plantains. This was one of the most flavorful and tasty sandwiches that I have ever had. The meat, the bread, the onion and peppers were all amazing. I am still thinking about it as I typed. It is not the biggest sandwich, but was filling. The plantains were pretty good too. This restaurant is well deserving of the 5 stars I gave it as well as the high rating that it carries on Yelp. There's like two or three Peruvian restaurants in the Indianapolis area and this one was the one I haven't visited! It's a little bit far from downtown and kind of hidden but Google maps will do the job. Plenty of spots for parking once you get there. Anyway, went a week ago to this place a little bit dark inside they need better illumination but their cuisine it's so good. I had chicha morada which is a juice made out of corn very refreshing! Then we had a breakfast which includes a tamale, deep fried sweet potatoes and pork ask for more bread and make a sandwich with all these! I know, sounds weird but the taste is pretty good. In addition we had this ceviche which is a very juicy ceviche with corn toasted kernels an interesting combination worth trying! A friend of mine told me about this place a while back and I finally made it by here. This place could definitely end up on Diner's Drive-Ins and Dives. I was coming in from the south side of town so it is a little awkward to get into the place because of the median I had to go down and make a u-turn. It was worth the trouble. I ordered the chicharrones and it was listed as an appetizer. It was a very good portion size and I was able to purchase it and a coke and spend less than $8. I will say if you do not like red onions you may not want to order this. I I received tender, succulent, thin fried pork on top of slices of sweet potato and red onions, peppers, and cilantro in some sort of marinade on top. I did have to wait about 15 minutes to get my order to go because there is only one cook and it appears that is all there is room for so be prepared to possibly to wait. They have sandwiches and Empanadas on the menu also and I am sure I will be stopping by here again. read more

This gem of a sandwich shop made me smile. The exterior is adorable, the staff were friendly and kind, the yukas fritas were delicious and crunchy, and there's SALSA DANCING every so often. Don Juan's won 'Top 10 Places to Eat in Indiana by Yelpers in 2018.' Woohoo! The Peruvian culture is evident in the shop and the food is yummy. Here's the deets: - Yukas fritas: fried yuka roots. It was my first time trying them and they tasted like sweeter, thicker French fries (ish) and came with a nice mayonnaise-based dipping sauce - Empanadas: WOW. The exterior pastry was sweet and sprinkled in powder sugar and paired perfectly with the carne inside. I would absolutely order them again and again. - Vegetarian sandwich: comes loaded with fresh avocado, fried sweet potatoes, and veggies. It's huge and can feed two people (or maybe I could've finished it if I hadn't eaten all of those sides beforehand...) When are salsa nights held? Apparently there's a Peruvian festival held here every year that turns into a big sales party. You know that when an event just 'turns into' a salsa dance evening that it's legit. Years. That's how long I've been meaning to visit Don Juan's Peruvian Sandwiches. Well, we finally made it! This business has been on Yelp's Top Places to Eat in Indiana list multiple times and quite frankly, if it weren't for my fellow Yelpers, I don't know if I ever would have found myself at this mysterious location. Ha, half way through the 15 minute drive from downtown I asked myself: "where the hell am I?" ...which made the whole experience even more fun. Following the review recommendations, we ordered the yucca fries to kick things off. The accompanying sauce was delicious. Oh, and how can I forget the beautifully crispy beef empanadas that also kicked the meal off? They were sprinkled with powdered sugar and it oddly enough, worked really well. I would stop by this biz for the carryout empanadas alone. I kept the heavy orders rolling with the chicharrones sandwich. The meat was delicious but not the version of chicharrones I was expecting. I think next time I would opt for more empanadas paired with the onion-based salad (drawing a blank on the name). Lastly, the space and customer service. The somewhat barren surroundings of Don Juan's are a stark contrast to the beautiful job this business has done on the interior and exterior of the space. It's huge! Why so much space, we asked...salsa nights, of course! I hope to one day visit to experience salsa nights firsthand. Rumor has it, they have a Peruvian festival in the fall and fly in professional dancers! Our server was incredibly sweet and attentive. Fun, funky, authentic little sandwich joint... the tin siding and roof reminded me of the little cafes in the Caribbean, where the proprietors had to shoo the chickens back out into the yard while I ate. Delicious food -- ceviche had crispy, crunchy fried baby octopus, which were tender and fresh; yucca fries were light and crisp and mild. Don't miss the chicharrones sandwich -- it was delicious! My only quibble is that our order got mixed up so by the time my lunch arrived, my companions were done eating... and nothing was offered except an apology when I pointed out that the table next to us (they arrived after we did) were all served. And because there was a big party, we couldn't even order more yucca fries -- we were just told "no." Bummer. read more

I want to preface this review by saying that I am Peruvian. I typically don't review Peruvian restaurants as I find my judgement is a little harsh since I'm used to Peruvian food from the country itself. That being said, this place definitely earned its impeccable ratings. The food was amazing! Everything was "a su punto" or exactly how it should taste and the portions were large. When I saw the chef flambeing the lomo saltado, I knew I was in for an authentic experience. The also didn't skimp out on the presentation of the food. I love the concept of the Peruvian sandwiches with limited entree choices. The sandwich concept allows prices to stay low and encourages reluctant customers from trying something they may not have tried before. I know Peruvian food usually runs expensive and so I love how this place is breaking that barrier. read more

I am so glad we finally got around to trying this. From the road, this place looks like the kinda place ou would not expect much from, but don't judge a book by its cover. The food here is incredible. The portions on the sandwiches are huge. I feel that it is kinda insulting to call these master pieces "sandwhiches". The flavors that are developed in such a simple meal are tremendous. The staff is quick and friendly and the menu is very simple. It appears getting carryout is pretty common, but if you nest inside you can sit there and smell all the amazing flavors coming out of the kitchen. And then when the food comes out you get to stare in envy as you await your masterpiece to arrive. They also have bottled beer which is a lovely touch if you want to kick back and take your time while you eat. Been coming here for quite some time. Wonderful Peruvian place. We get the lomo saltado and a chicharrones sandwiches. Fresh baked bread, tender meat, and a salsa criolla that I eat by the plateful. It is always an incredible experience. Their fries are made out of some weird potatoes because they taste amazing! I think they're just super fresh and fried using fresh oil. They top them with flaky salt and it's just amazing. We've also tried their cookies and they were pretty good as well. Great lunch/dinner spot. They are a bit slow so just be prepared. We ordered the chefles-plat and yucca roots as sides and the Asado and Pollo Saltado sandwiches. Everything was tasty. The sandwiches were juicy and savory, perfectly seasoned. The yucca w provided sauce was very good. First time we ever had the root. Plantains were good as well, used the sauce and salsa on them. Super filling, could not eat it all, but looking forward to the leftovers in the morning. As I waited for the takeout order, tried the Peruvian Golden Ale, very good as well. Great experience! This is one of the biggest hidden gems in Indiana. They have what I would say is the most diverse as well as the best food in the area. The service is always excellent and the people are very friendly. From what I can tell it is a small family owned business and they truly care about their clientele. Don Juan V's Peruvian Sandwiches is located in a small strip mall in an often overlooked part of town. Do not let the location keep you from trying their sandwiches made from scratch, to order with high quality ingredients. If I could give more than 5 stars I would do so. It is obvious great care goes into the preparation of each order. Everyone in my group had great things to say about their food. Personally I had the Milenesa de Pollo...think Hoosier tenderloin sized chicken breast lightly breaded, fried, served on fresh bread, topped with lettuce, marinated onions and Don Juan's special sauce. Other reviewers were spot on this sauce could be bottled and offered for sale - it's to die for. One of my fellow diners ordered the fish sammy (can't remember the official name) and it too was huge, flavorful and topped with lettuce, marinated onions and tartar sauce. Several of us ordered the empanadas with me getting one to go, along with a Peruvian tamal. The owner came out to introduce herself and welcome us to her restaurant. She was most accommodating when I shared with her my desire to place a to go order so I could try more menu items. She had the kitchen staff slightly undercook my tamal and included directions on how to finish it myself at home, as she thought fully cooking it and reheating it would negatively affect the quality - thank you for your care and consideration! Also, all the toppings were packed separately and it was easy to finish my tamal at home. My empanada was prepared sans powdered sugar which I had at home. This was my first time eating the Peruvian version of a tamal. Some might final it a bit bland as the meat inside had no sauce (this is normal for a Peruvian tamal). The texture of the tamal was moist and the toppings enhanced the flavor. I had requested some of the green sauce and it added just a bit of heat to both the empanada and tamal. This pepper based sauce could also be bottled and sold as I cannot find a similar version anywhere - they all seem to be tomatillo based. As for overall service there was one server handling the dining room and he did a gteat job. He patiently answered our questions and was just an overall pleasant individual. So for just over $22 I enjoyed not one but two Peruvian meals. read more

Fantastic!!! There's only two other Peruvian restaurants in town I know of, and it's so great that this one is specifically focused on sandwiches! Plus empanadas and other appetizers! Every few months they also bring a Peruvian band to Indy and play in their restaurant. I got there when the band was rehearsing and they sounded great!!! The manager was very friendly and we chatted a while. Apparently they've been open 6 months, so it's still pretty new. I loved the lechon sandwich and highly encourage folks to head here as soon and as often as possible! Plus! That sangria? GET IT. it is actual sangria, not some lame juice with a swig of actual wine (calling out pretty much every other restaurant in this city). read more
