4 stars is right for this place. It is indeed interesting, feels like a blast from the past, and the most Indiana/Midwest American vibe ever as it's this large, cafeteria style deli. Kinda weird, but good food is the most importantly priority and the sandwich is a winner. Reuben is their signature sandwich, so I got it. Great choice, it was the best Reuben I've ever had. Really well crafted sandwich and they make it right in front of you and quite quickly. Potato latkes are also one of their specialties, so I got that. You eat them either with sour cream or applesauce -- I tried both. Honestly both were good but I liked the sour cream vibe better along with the sandwich. I also tried the Mac-and-cheese -- not good. If you are a true Mac lover, you will find the flaws in this one easily (a bit watery, lacking that cheesy pull and lacking strong flavor). This place was great. So much variety and was quick service. The ny pastrami was so tasty and would definitely get it again. The rare beef was also good - I got the Rebecca's which is half meat but next time I'll just get full meat. The sandwiches were not SUPER huge but we also didn't get any sides or anything. The staff were mostly friendly. The dining area needing bussing. The meats were mostly middling and the breads were not up to par give the prices being charged. My wife and daughter shared a "rare" roast beef sandwich that was basically well done and clearly not rare. I had the pastrami sandwich in a regular bun. I ended up just eating the meat as the roll was not fresh or tasty. The pastrami was ok but not on the level of something like Katz's in NYC and the portion was okay. My wife liked her potato salad. I really liked the potato pancake and we all loved the lemon merigue pie. This place should be working harder to match the quality standard that accompanies their reputation. IDK, everybody seems to love it here. I am not really sure why. I would consider the food to be OK, but that's about it. Maybe it's the volume. The serving sizes are fairly big. Then again the prices sure have increased tremendously also and so it's not really a great bargain anymore. Add to that the rudeness of the staff and the dungy surroundings and I have to say it's not my cup of tea. I'd still go if someone else is paying, but that's about it for me. The place is huge! Not what i was expecting when I was told I had to stop by. I'm used to delicatessens that are small and intimate. There is an area where you can order your meat by the pound. Another area where you can order pies and desserts. And the deli counter where you can get any kind of deli sandwich that you can think of, and a lot of hot entrees also. Since I've been told they were famous for their corned beef sandwich that's what I got. It came as 8 oz of lean corned beef on a couple of good size pieces of bread with pickles on the side. The Corned Beef was very tasty. It was a little leaner than I normally like it but that's not really a complaint, just an observation. The dill pickles were outstanding! We did not try the desserts, but they looked amazing. The only down side is the cost of the corned beef and pastrami, although I understand those take a while to prepare well. And it tastes great. Love coming to Shapiro's usually but today's experience wasn't what I am used to as far as interaction with employees. Flight landed today dropped luggage off at hotel and took Taxi to Shapiro's. Picked up two loaves of bread to take home back to DC. while picking up lunch. Saw the sign noting daily specials so I asked for fried chicken but the lady behind the counter in a not so nice way said that's a SATURDAY SPECIAL.... and kept saying it while people behind me at looking at our show. Explained to her the font was too small for me to see any other notations than Daily Specials. At nearly $30 for a sandwich, I would expect it to be earth-shatteringly delicious. Spoiler alert: it's good but not THAT good. Someone told me the cheesecake was the best in the city. I'm not sure what city they were speaking of because I tried it and was really disappointed. At $10 a slice, I wouldn't agree. The cheesecake wasn't even set. It's was soft and mushy. Very unappealing. My son had the roast beef and Mac & cheese. The roast beef looked gray and the Mac was runny and sweet tasting. I think it is one of the top three worst Mac n cheeses I've ever tasted. Whatever you do, don't try it! Service is good here. I went through the line and I also go a to-go order. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. I'm looking forward to going back one morning for an egg or everything bagel. They are about $2/each or $8/half dozen. I am originally from New Jersey and have spent much of my life dining at various delis, with Katz's in New York City regarded as one of the best. Shapiro's offers ample parking and is easily accessible. Usually, a reputable restaurant can be identified by its entrance; however, Shapiro's failed in this regard. Upon entering, I noticed the floors were dirty, and the kitchen was disgustingly filthy. The staff was unfriendly and inattentive. The sandwich portion was disappointingly small considering the amount of corned beef served, and the mustard provided was barely spicy or enough. Additionally, I was concerned about the sanitation practices I observed, especially the bussers repeatedly using the same unwashed rag to clean. If I were in management, I would ensure proper training or consider disciplinary measures. Over the years, I have noticed that cleanliness standards in some establishments associated with Jewish culture may sometimes fall short of expectations. I will address the Board of Health to evaluate this establishment. read more

I took a trip down to Shapiro's on a Wednesday afternoon. Cafeteria style where you grab a tray and pick what items you would like. I grabbed a small bowl of the potato salad and moved along to the deli area where I ordered a Rebecca turkey sandwich. The Rebecca is a small version of their sandwich that comes with a small amount of meat, tomato and lettuce. You can choose the bread you would like. I grabbed a water out of the beverage fridge and just those three things was $20!!!! The older cashier lady had an attitude and was obviously having a bad day. My opinion is as follows : expensive for what it is, it's a plain sandwich . I can say I've been here, but I have no interest to return. It's a massive restaurant and "cafeteria" style so you take whatever food you want as you shuffle sideways toward the register. Interestingly, the first offerings are all desserts. What do they say about life being short so eat dessert first? We tried the Reuben, a smoked turkey sandwich, a deviled egg, and potato pancakes. The Reuben is absolutely massive and delicious. Ten big stars for the Reuben. It's messy but fantastic. The meat is tender and delicious. The bread is very fresh. This is, indeed, a great sandwich. The smoked turkey sandwich is also massive but if this was the "smoked" turkey (versus the roasted turkey), then this turkey quit smoking 20 years ago. The meat still tasted very fresh but I was a disappointed that there was no discernible smoky flavor. The deviled egg, loaded with paprika, was very good. If you like deviled eggs, try this one. The potato pancakes were as dense as a brick and were awful. If it had been colder outside, I could have used them as hockey pucks. After one bite, I was done. They should be embarrassed to serve these things. I have personally made potato pancakes a thousand times and they need to be cooked to order and eaten right away. If you cannot do that, do not serve them. The workers are a little on the gruff side but boy are they efficient. You give them your sandwich order, including the type of meat, bread, any cheese, mustard, etc., and, bang, you get your sandwich very quickly. The Reuben takes a little longer to make. I so wanted to give them 5 stars but there was some room for improvement. I would, however, happily return for that Reuben. Plenty of free parking in their own designated lot next door. read more
