was staying in town for some training and was looking for some good Mexican food. I stopped in for lunch. Fast casual set up, I ordered at the counter first and then grabbed a seat. The staff was very nice. I tried newed things that I haven't had before. I got the tamales at the recommendation of the girl. I thought they were good. It came with rice and beans. I also got a sopapilla, which is a fried pastry. You can get them stuffed for a meal, which was the other thing I was considering. Since she recommended the tamales though I got the regular one which is sweet kind of like a dessert and came with honey. It was very good. Prices were great. All and all, I enjoyed it very much and would recommend a stop in. I would come back again. read more

The sopapillas were warm and fluffy. We also enjoyed the refried beans. Ordering is done at the counter which is a little awkward.

It has been about three years since our first visit. The first thing we noted was their hours are very different now. They close at 3:00pm which was quite a shock, particularly since we were there on a Friday. Take-out only between 2:30, and I mean 2:30 on the dot, and the 3:00 closing. As before, their green chile sauce is great; the beans better than most; the hard shell taco was excellent. Interesting that their salsa is different than most other places. My only disappointment was my tamale was luke warm. They are clearly popular. The owner is missing the boat closing so early but hey it is their business, just be aware of the hours. I will add a star to my previous rating because their prices are reasonable and the food good. Will return again when in town. read more

This is a little Mexican restaurant in the middle town that you have to try if you like this type of cuisine. The chips are really good and the salsa is ok, I'm not a big fan of it but it's not bad. The prices here are fair and the service is always good. This is my go to spot when I don't feel good because they have some really good hot chile and that always seems to make me feel better. I usually get a taco on the side with whatever I order because I love tacos haha. The ground beef tacos are good here. My kid is afraid of their chile because she claims it's too hot so she gets chile cheese fries without the chile lol. The sopapillas here are the best in town as are the refried beans. I come here wherever I can and I definitely give this place two thumbs up from me! read more

Loved stopping here today while traveling thru Socorro! We sat on the patio and it was so lovely! We took the recommended Friday special and we're not disappointed! Ate here when going to and coming from Santa Fe. The menudo was delicious! My daughter enjoyed her quesadilla as well.

We stopped here for lunch on a road trip. The daily special fish tacos are some of the best I've had. The refried beans are excellent. If you get the daily special that comes with a drink, make sure you don't get charged for the drink. read more

A very nice discovery in Socorro. It is located in the historic downtown(?) block. The tortillas are delicious and the green chile is now one of my favorites in New Mexico. Beware though, it does have a kick. It took a little time to get the food after ordering at the counter, but it was totally worth the wait. If you are visiting NM Tech or the Pete V. Domenici Data and Science Facility, both of which you should, ao anyplace in or near Socorro, NM, and you really like really good new Mexican food, you must eat here at least once. The Carne Adovada Stuffed Sopaipilla smothered in Red is among the very best I have had anyplace. The Red, in particular, is close to perfection: pure red chiles, with a delightful smoky flavor, are about a 7 on a 1-10 piquancy scalr. No fillers or extraneous flavors: This is the real stuff. Almost as good as the Red at Mary & Tito's in ABQ, and that's quite a compliment. Delightful and attentive service. This place has been here for nearly 40 years. What a delightful surprise. Excellent local new Mexican food. As usual, I ordered the flat enchiladas with red chili cheese and onions. Not disappointed. My guest ordered the Carne Adovada Stuffed Sopapilla Ala Carte, excellent as well. Most stuffed sopapillas are served with garnish and smothered. Not here. These are handheld beauties! Since my 1st time in 1983 coming to the Don Juan's as fresh, wide-eye young kid from Southern Illinois, I have love the simple, yet delicious green chili bean burrito. Nothing has changed in the past 4 decades. The decor, the music, and the incredibly friendly folks dishing up the best Socorro has to offer. The green chili is hot, the beans (likely not vegan) are perfect, and the house made tortillas are freakin' phenomenal. Oh...the sopapillas are so fresh they are too hot to handle and delicious! A no-brainer & must when your travels take you through this quaint little town in the Sonora desert. read more

A great place to eat some traditional New Mexican food in Socorro. The menu has all of the classics - from tacos to flautas to burritos to posole and menudo. All is delicious and made to order. We always start off the meal with the chips, salsa and guacamole. The chips are house made and the guacamole has a nice kick to it but neither the guac or salsa are overly spicy. The rice and beans are tasty accompaniments to the meals - the beans can either come refried or whole for those looking for a healthier or vegetarian option. The rice has a strong tomato base and is lightly seasoned as to not overpower the main entree. I am a big fan of the whole and refried beans as both have great flavor whichever you prefer! For mains, we had chicken flautas, beef tacquitos, chicken tacos and a green burrito. The flavors were delicious and all the ingredients fresh! The green burrito is spicy and delicious and is a must try. Another must try would be the posole as the flavors create a party in your mouth like no other! And there is no better way to end the meal than with some fresh sopapillias with honey. If I could eat these everyday I would! The staff is super friendly and attentive and the service was extremely quick! This is a must stop place for us every time we are in the area. Best beans and rice I've ever had, green Chile is quite spicy, but in a good way. I also recommend the tamales.

My wife and I remember Don Juan from back when he was peddling tamales on the Plaza. His food was great then, and his tradition continues today. Now in a old brick building nearby, the family continues to provide tasty New Mexican food. Their red chile sauce is spectacular -- hot, not killer, with other spice notes and a texture that makes it great for a variety of dishes. When I am in Socorro, I typically buy a couple of take out orders of this so I can freeze it and take it back to Virginia to help get us through those homesick for New Mexico food blues. read more

Don Juan's is probably the best food in Socorro, and I wish I could make it there when they're open more often. That's the first thing you should know: I don't have the hours in front of me right now but I believe they are only open for lunch, and closed some days of the week. That said it's well worth stopping by for lunch. One thing that really stands out to me is their green Chile, which I think is the hottest in town, beating out even the relatively strong stuff at Blake's handily. This is a small operation and the food is made with care. The menu covers all the New Mexican favorites and it's all fantastic. The location is also right in a historic part of town near some major historic businesses, so it's one of the choicer locations in Socorro. read more

I think the red chile here is wonderful. Hot and flavorful. All the classic Socorro food are here. Stacked enchiladas are some of the best I have had. The burritos are traditional with very good tortillas. They can get over enthusiastic with the sauce, making for a messy plate. But I would rather have the generosity than stinginess when it comes to sauce. I eat there every time I visit and just before I leave for home, I get a couple of quarts of their sauce - some with meat and some just plain red chile. But - it doesn't last long once I am home and dreaming of eating in Socorro! read more

Went to Don Juan's because I was told they had mole. Whoever told me that lied. Regardless, I decided to stay. I don't get the "more homey than El Camino" comment made by another reviewer. However I do concur on the same reviewers portion size comment. The place is in the "historic" block of Socorro. If there is such a thing!! I must be honest, it has been over a month since I had lunch there so I don't recall my specific order. I had one of their special lunch burritos which was very good. I wish I had seen the review that remarked on the posole. I did consider that until settling on the burrito. Dang! Oh well. I guess it requires another trip. read more

The ladies are always so polite and the BBQ burrito is good just but would be better with a different sauce over all it's a 7 and the GREEN CHILE burrito is really good. Very few places open on Sunday in Socorro so we tried this one even reviews were mixed. Atmosphere was really great - sat in back room with fountain- smoothing sound. Food was not feeT but still good. I would recommend the blue corn shredded beef tacos. Lots of meat and a full plate. My husband had the stuffed carne adovada dinner and he said it was very good. Great counter service...was patient with me as an out of towner who was indecisive on what to get. Had unsweetened tea..yeh! I hate all that sweetened tea in gas station drink coolers. Has a daily special..today was green chile sopapilla. Very tasty. Green chile is spicy and good, but I've had hotter. I got the combo 1 Christmas style and everything had great flavor. The green chile was very flavorful. My daughter got the shredded beef tacos and she said the meat had a good flavor. Reasonable prices and the my favorite New Mexican red make this place a real standout. The posole is so good that one friend of mine who was famous for not liking hot foods (even plain BBQ sauce was too hot) would suffer through it. The only drawback is that they aren't open for dinner. read more
