Did Don Julio's live up to the hype? Can any restaurant ranked #10 in the world by World's Best Restaurants -- and crowned #1 steakhouse three consecutive years -- truly live up to its reputation? I'd say yes, and then some. A word of advice: sit inside. That's where the magic happens. The open-flame grills roaring indoors create an incredible ambiance -- intimate, lively, and unlike anything else. The outdoor seating is charming in its own right (cozy blankets draped over every chair), but the interior is the real experience. Service was exceptional. Before we even ordered, our waiter personally walked us through the kitchen to introduce us to the various cuts on display -- a thoughtful touch that made the whole meal feel like an event. We settled on the ribeye and one other cut, with the ribeye stealing the show: thick, juicy, and cooked to perfection over open flame. To top it all off, the meal came with complimentary champagne, chorizo, empanadas, and dessert -- generous extras that made an already outstanding dinner feel truly special.
Number 1 steakhouse and number 10 restaurant in the world. It's not often that the actual experience meets the hype and expectations. This was one of those moments. This was one of the things I was most looking forward to on this trip, and I made a reservation through our hotel months in advance. Fantastic meal overall. The steaks were great. Service was on point right from the beginning when they gave us wine and yummy corn empanadas when we arrived. The chocolate-covered dulce de leche at the end was delectable.
We thought we could get a dinner reservation with maybe a week's advance but found out they are 3 months out when we tried in February. We were able to get a first seating Lunch reservation 3 weeks in advance. Arrived on a Saturday for an 11 am reservation and already was starting to pick up. We were met with a complimentary glass of Chandon Brut (with refills) which was a nice touch. Also, there was a pumpkin mini empanada that was being passed out as we waited to be seated. Didn't taste it but heard comments from others that were enjoying it. We were seated outside promptly at 11. Inviting outdoor Dining with tablecloths. A plethora of different cuts of steak! We ended up going with the Ribeye (Ojo de Bife)and noticed that many were sharing their steak. When we saw 500 grams (or over a pound) for the Ribeye and many of the cuts, we understood why. Steak came out a perfect medium rare (as recommended)-tender with that char/smoke flavor-delicious! Our side salad was enjoyed. House baked bread with tasty dips as well a complimentary tomato with sauce (off menu-cant remember name) appetizer were a great start to our meal. Service was exceptional from beginning to end including the table side steak carving. Believe the hype, this is the Parrilla in Buenos Aires!
Pretty well priced for a Michelin star place in South America. the service was great, and the welcome empanada was so impressing, my mother ordered additional during the meal. the ambiance was fantastic, although we were dining with all tourists, it still gave a nice feel of BA. we ordered a ton of meats and loved the chimichurris. The bread was great but the weird green sauce/soup was so bitter
This one? A big disappointment. And yeah, I might catch some heat for saying it. It's trendy, all over social media, crowned by many as the best parrilla in Buenos Aires supposedly even a Michelin star winner. So naturally, the bar was set high. Maybe too high. I'm not saying the food was terrible. It wasn't. It just didn't shine. Nothing on the plate made me pause, nothing made me lean back and say, "Okay, now I get it." Maybe I ordered the wrong thing. Maybe it was an off night. But when you walk into a place with that kind of reputation, you expect more than just "fine." I came without a reservation, fully aware I'd have to wait. No problem there. What did bother me, though, was watching others in line being handed bubbles, empanadas, little bites to hold them over while in the full hour I stood there, not once was I offered anything. Maybe it was an oversight. Maybe not. But standing there empty-handed while others were being catered to didn't feel great. I wish I had more to say more praise, more critique, more something. But honestly, there just isn't much else. It didn't offend. It just didn't impress. And sometimes, that's the bigger letdown
On a 1-month getaway, other than lodging and air, I'd planned very little. Don Julio was the sole spot I'd planned to dine at, making 3pm reservations for an outdoor table well in advance of my trip. I'd read about Don Julio and noted its Michelin star but had no expectations other than a great meat meal at an authentic Argentinian parilla (steakhouse). And, despite the late hour at which Argentinians generally dine, I'd opted for a late afternoon seating in anticipation of how full I'd be when leaving. With outdoor temperatures approaching 90 degrees I was relieved to be greeted with a glass of champagne and follow the hostess to a table for 4, inside the restaurant. From there? Everything was just as perfect as that introduction. On a walking tour days earlier my guide had pointed out Don Julio noting their popularity and prices. My group and another person on the tour had upcoming reservations there and he assured us it was good and we'd enjoy it but made the point that the same experience can be had all over Buenos Aires at a lesser cost. Having now had the Don Julio experience and experienced several other parilla I concur with only part of his comment: One can have a similar experience and meal elsewhere but one cannot have the Don Julio experience. It's worth having. The staff at Don Julio is unlike the staff at any other Argentinian restaurant. Their level of attentiveness is outstanding. Without getting into the nitty gritty of the excellent meal and service I will say that they feature a very big menu and an even bigger wine list. My table of 4 sampled Rib-eye, Tenderloin, and Prime Rib with various tomato accompaniments, bread, wine, and... ah, who knows? The whole experience was dreamy and one of my fondest membranes of my vacation. Expensive for Argentina, sure, but with tip and wine my meal for 4 ran just under $400; Almost reason enough to fly to Buenos Aires. Don Julio was an experience I'd regret having missed.
Nice space, a bit of a revolving door with block set seating times to fit in as many people as possible. After eating 4 Asados in country before we ate here we had tried a variety of styles of cooking. We loved the Proveleta and skirt steak (seasoning and cook were perfect). The rest of the meal was good. This was the first arugula salad with Parmesan that I've ever asked for seconds on! Because we ordered the set menu we were unable to do a wine pairing with it which was very confusing, that should be the easiest to do a pairing with. We didn't know what courses were being served with the set menu so we asked the sommelier to choose wines for each course but they wouldn't, they focused more on our tastes versus helping us to find the best for each course.
One of the most famous steakhouses in the world with great service. My booking is at 10:30pm and when I arrived a bit early, I was immediately greeted with an empanada and a glass of sparkling wine while I wait. They showed me the wine cellar on the way in which is quite an impressive collection. Steak portions are generally huge in Argentina so I got the half portion rib eye. Extremely well prepared with nice condiments - compared to New York steakhouses it has a more charcoal grilled flavor. One thing to pick on is while the steak knife looks pretty it is a bit difficult to use. Overall the experience is great and it is not too expensive for a fine dining experience at one of the best restaurants in the world. Reserve for a table early though as I booked almost a month early but I still only managed to get a 10:30pm table (despite they eat late in Argentina)
I was a bit wary when coming in because I saw mixed reviews on Reddit and this spot only boasts a 4.4 on Google Maps. However, as a one Michelin star steakhouse and rated number one in the world, I had to give it a go while in Buenos Aires. I arrived a bit late to my reservation as there was a bit of traffic on the way. However, they were kind enough to seat me still and handed me a glass of complimentary champagne while waiting for the table to clear. Before seating, they gave me a tour of the meat grill and the downstairs wine cellar as well. My seat was outside (where the majority of the seats were), but I didn't mind it as it was quite nice outside. As for the actual food, I asked for a "bife de chorizo ancho, jugoso tirando a punto" - an Argentine sirloin, wide side, rare leaning towards medium. ChatGPT said this would be the juiciest cut, and I was really impressed by the steak. It was very sizable, and most bites were extremely flavorful. My only pet peeve is that there were some bites that were a bit chewier and tougher, but in hindsight it's really hard to get such a large steak cooked fully perfectly. Overall I had quite a solid experience at Don Julio and would come back again if I were in Buenos Aires.
There is a reason why this place is so legendary and popular: It is the attention to detail. The reason why the reservations are so hard to get is not a popularity game. Treating everyone like a VIP, greeting them with a glass of Chandon and a warm empanada sets the tone. You step in and literally every member of the service crew welcomes you until you are at your table. The service is meticilous, to the point they iron the tablecloths on the table and put a cloth on your purse to protect it from spills. Everyone will tell you that the food and the parilla experience is not irreplacable, and it is true. We did get similar chorizo de bonbon and bife de chorizo at other establishments as well. But when I look at our overall experience, I'd put the service here as a key distinguishing factor.
Don Julio was everything I expected an Argentinian steakhouse to be. Firstly, reservations are a must! The place was packed with a large number of people waiting outside for no shows. The venue is traditional. Service was great. I ordered an empanada (not edpecially memorable) and bife de lomo (maybe the best steak I ever had in my life). The steak was very thick, no fat whatsoever, and impossibly tender. They serve this type of beef medium rare. I hope the photo below does this justice. I have never had such juicy tender steak before. I tried two more famous steakhouses while in Buenos Aires. Don Julio was the best one where the steak was superb with great service. read more

Totally forgot to review this. Easily one of the best steakhouses in BA. Sure, you'll likely have to wait if you don't have a reservation, but while you're waiting, they hand out some complimentary prosecco. It's not the best prosecco you've ever had, but it's a more-than-welcome treat while waiting for a spot to sit down. The inside is filled to the brim with tables and shelves with wine, and has a pretty nice steakhouse-y feel, if that makes sense. We were eventually seated seated outside, which was actually great, since the weather was perfect. Went with the porterhouse, with a couple sides of grilled vegetables, and they were both delicious. Don't know if I can consider potatoes a vegetable per se, but still a delicious side dish. Porterhouse was huge and was cooked to a perfect medium rare (jugoso). Meat was incredibly flavorful, even though it wasn't as fatty as most porterhouses you would get in the US. At about AR$240, not bad at all. The Malbec we got was probably my favorite out of all the places we went to in BA, just the right balance of sweet and dry, in my opinion. Service is much quicker here than at other restaurants and steakhouses in the area. I don't know what it is, but I'm guessing that since they have a pretty extensive staff, there's someone always refilling water or taking miscellaneous small requests. Prices, as mentioned before, are pretty good for a nice steakhouse, and definitely cheaper than at La Cabrera. Between this and La Cabrera, I would say I liked the overall experience at Don Julio better, although I'm a fan of all the small side dishes and extras you receive at La Cabrera. I wouldn't say that I liked one over the other, they're really just different experiences in general, so not quite comparable. Really though, Don Julio is a great choice if you're looking for a good steak in the heart of BA. read more

We had our first and last meals in Buenos Aires at Don Julio! Our first was a late lunch on our hotel's recommendation, but we probably wouldn't have gone back had our last BA dinner not been a horrible experience. With one final lunch in town before our flight, we decided to return to Don Julio and go out on a high note. Our first meal was around 3 pm, but it seems like Don Julio (unlike many other restaurants) stays open all day to cater to tourists. It was busy when we walked up and we waited for about 20 minutes for an outdoor table. The customers seemed to be a mix of tourists and locals speaking a variety of languages; not all of the servers speak English, but some do. We sat inside for our second meal, which I personally preferred. Although the restaurant is 15 years old, the interior makes it look like it's been there forever, with exposed brick, mismatched tile, and empty wine bottles signed by happy customers all over the walls. Dining outside is nice if the weather is pleasant, but you should at least pop in to use the restroom and get a look at the interior. The tables all have "tablecloths" made of cured leather hides, which is awesome and filled me with the desire to try this at home. We saw people ordering the short ribs, which seemed to be a house specialty, and decided we wanted that. We didn't realize that we were seeing couples splitting a HALF portion. The full portion is huge! But it's delicious and tender, so it's actually not that hard to polish off. I loved the grilled veggies, which come in a smoking-hot cast-iron pan that keeps them warm -- it's a tasty mix of tomatoes, peppers, onions, eggplant, mushrooms, sweet potato, and potato that's so thick and hearty it's almost like meat in itself. On our second visit, we had the lomo, which is not as overwhelmingly huge but is still thick and tender. The wine list has plenty of Argentine Malbec, of course. I liked the inexpensive spumante by the glass as a light afternoon drink, and the Aperol Spritz was a delightful citrusy cocktail. My boyfriend ordered a glass of the house red and it cost AR$130, so watch out for that! It was a very good wine that he enjoyed, but we might not have gotten that if we'd known it would be the price of a whole bottle at other parrillas. The service here is really the outstanding part of the experience. It seems like there's an army of servers and busboys just waiting to refill your glass, whisk away plates and crumbs, and ask if you need anything else. Watching them expertly mix a green salad or carve and serve the steak is a marvel of efficiency and grace. I think this is just about the best, most professional service we've ever had at a restaurant anywhere! I only wish we had a steakhouse like this back home. If you're in or near Palermo, try Don Julio for pleasant atmosphere, great food, and amazing service. read more

Favorite steakhouse I have been to in Argentina. Very reasonably prices for the quality. I had the Tbone, a grilled provolone, and oyster mushrooms. Came back the next two days for the beef empanadas which were also delicious. Highly recommend this place! read more
Let's go ahead and add this to the 6 star group of places that I would travel the world to eat at. I know Argentinians take meat seriously but this place is on an entirely different level. I've eaten at multiple parillas in BAs and this is my favorite. Depending on the night you'll get a mix of locals and tourists. It's fancy enough for a date night and not casual enough for little kids to be running between the tables playing hide and seek. The Bife de Chorizo is a classic cut down there. Never ever had a steak taste like this before. It was flavorful, buttery, milky, some other weird adjectives that I previously thought would never make sense for steak, and all with hardly any seasoning. The meat stands alone and I'll probably never find anything of that quality again. The Morcilla (blood sausage) as an appetizer will knock your socks off too. I may have liked this better than the Bife but it's close. Salads are fresh and my friend said the Empanadas were the best he had tasted during our visit to the city. Bonus for the wine list, specifically the local Malbecs but you can find that almost anywhere in the city. If you are visiting BAs this place is bang for the buck. You can eat and drink like a king for about $40 at the time of this review. Be sure to make a reservation though as the wait is usually crazy. read more
Thought about it appt but I can not hide my disappointment... For so long that I was planning on eating here since it was so recommend by so many of my friends. We obviously had to wait, but we came prepared, lucky for us we had a nice lunch so we weren't even that hungry, although we couldn't skip the complimentary empanada ;) All together we waited one hour and 15 minutes. The real problem started when we set down, they literally put us with another table. My boyfriend had to wait for the lady to get up so he can get around her and go to his chair. See attached picture, it was ridiculous. The othertable comment on that too, and they asked for the check, than we had to listen to another couples conversation, just not my type of couples night. Drinks- right after we got to our sits, they offered us "water or soda" we didn't even got the menu yet, I get the sale but common.... My boyfriend asked for a glass of Malbec that somehow got forgotten along the way. The waitress said they had a mixed up with the tables. Food, we had the lomo, which is a normal great cut, I explained exactly how I wanted cooked, since I know that the majority tend to over cook it, I always ask for medium rare, I got an almost-done piece of meat, it was way too cooked for me, unfortunately, our waiter didn't came back to ask how was it untill my boyfriend eat the majority of it. Sides were just blah so I can't really add much about it. Dessert- didn't really want to risk it As of the check, we waited about 15 minutes to receive it, a little much to me. Prices- a little high in comparison with ALL the other restaurants I've visited in Argentina, but still low in comparison to NY. Honestly for this money you can eat way better in any other Parilla around Buenos Aires without waiting 2 hours. read more

Yes it lives up to the hype. We had the best fritters and yummy champagne while we were waiting for a table. And while the hostess originally said it would be about 40 mins it actually ended up being about 10, so dont take their word too seriously and stray too far. I got pasta and my bf got steak and we both enjoyed our pricey meals. read more

This was such an experience. The food was A+Mazing. The atmosphere - an experience. But the service just enhanced my mood and tastebuds. They're good. I've never been treated with such service. They made sure I had fresh bread. They filled my wine. They cut my meat. They even served my mashed potatoes! And they did it with a smile! I was walking in cloud nine when I was done. Hands down this place is definitely a highlight of my trip. A year ago I was in BA and was in love with the Lo de Jesus, but this time Don Julio beat all the steakhouses with handicap! While waiting we were served sparkling wine and grilled cheese, then served the best rib eye and lomo. CHORIZO was out of this world! This is like a gold standard for all chorizos in the world. Call it a tourist trap, only for US customers that don't know, or whatever you wanna call it, Don Julio wins the steak ballgame. I've run around town for the past month looking for the perfect place to eat. I've hit hole in the wall places, fine dining, and in between. I've eaten quite alright, and my shrunken pants show it. I have eaten here several times now, and if it wasn't for the fear of looking like a groupie or a pig, I'd eat here every day. Don J has the freshest meat, cooked as ordered, without killing it with seasoning (no pun intended). All they need to do is add some salt, put it on the grill, and mouth watering perfection comes at you. The service is great as well, with the attentive wait staff answering your questions, and a sommelier coming by to help with any suggestions on your choice for wine. Let's call this ballgame early, this is by far the best in Palermo (haven't worked my way through all the other 'hoods yet). read more

Best steaks and sausages we have ever had, and we have tried many in Texas, Italy, Germany, and elsewhere. Four of us went on the spur of the moment (no reservations), and were seated in the corner of the balcony with the best view of the dining room. We had bife de Lomo (tenderloin), bife de chorizo (sirloin), entrana (skirt steak), and Argentine spicy sausage. All were cooked to perfection. The wine list was extensive, but the waiter recommended a perfect Malbec. We should have stopped with dinner, but the pear-almond tart was out of this world, as was the flan and the tangy mousse. Bottom Line? About 50 USD per person. I'll do it again once I work off the extra pounds! read more

AMAZING!SUPERB! RICISIMO! Amazing dining experience st Don Julio's! My son and I just arrived to BA the day prior and we spent that day sightseeing and doing a lot of walking. I made reservations online 3 months prior to our date. I made it for 7pm and when we arrived there was not a wait. We decided to sit outdoors since the evening was perfect. Our waiter was very attentive and professional. We both chose to have the bife de lomo. Amazing! My son and I enjoyed our meal and our time st Don Julio. While we were dining the wait began as we saw guest after guest arrive and wait for a table. Our meal was just under $100US total. My son and I still talk about our meal there to this day. This is a must place if you will be in BA. read more

This is a must try in Buenos Aires. Don't even read through my review. Just do yourself a favor and just GO! You will not regret it. Best steak I've ever had outside of the U.S. Grab your fancy suit and take your loved one and just enjoy a really fancy steak dinner. Forget Mortons, Ruth's Chris or other steakhouses in the US. This beats them all and here's why: Service: Very attentive to all your needs. Servers recommendations should not be denied. Ambiance: Rustic yet fancy. Very elegant. Food: Steak and more steaks. Every want steak with a side of steak they have it and it will make your mouth water. Wine list amazing. You can't go wrong with the local stuff. My tip to all you lovers out there (You can thank me later) Make a reservations for special night. Sit in a street table not inside (trust me) You have to soak in Buenos Aires the right way. Order a great bottle of wine (Come on she deserves it) Really taste it. Order small appetizer, order the rib eyed and something else. Order another bottle of wine but you can go cheap this time because it will go with the dessert. Gaze into your partner's eyes and say "Are you going to finish that last bite?" Because the food is SO damn good!! read more

One of my favorite places in South America. It was highly recommended on Trip Advisors and I agree with all the reviews. I called ahead and was not able to make a reservation for 6 of us. We decided to go anyways and I am glad we went We arrived and there was a large group of people waiting but we were greeted with complimentary glass of champagne which is always a plus in my book. The wait was also not that long. The staff was very nice as we waited outside on a beautiful night. We sat upstairs and I immediately fell in love with the place. The decor and the ambiance was great. It was not stuffy like other steakhouses I have visited. I ordered the filet mignon was great. I usually order my steaks medium rare because they are Usually overcooked when I order medium (even at steakhouses) but the steak was truly medium rare because it was almost like a Tatar in the middle. So if you enjoy a true medium steak then just order it medium because they know how to do it right. I also ordered the grilled vegetables which were amazing. The side dishes of some type of fried cheese were also very amazing. The service was great and so was the food. We ended up decorating a wine bottle which they ended up displaying. A friend of ours went weeks later and was excited to report that our bottle was still displayed. If I ever return to Buenos Aires, I will def be coming back. read more

This place is a Buenos Aires institution, and for good reason. We had a bottle of Moenia 2013 malbec and a couple of steaks (butterfly sirloin and bife de lomo) and all, along with the service and atmosphere, were outstanding. Try to get here early to avoid a wait, although they'll give you a free glass of prosecco while you wait. Proud to be review #300! You guys are amazing! read more

Service: wall of text follows, sorry. What distinguishes good service vs great service usually comes out after something goes wrong, in the way the restaurant handles it. When I was there earlier today, I got a table outside (it was nice a warm). 5 minutes after they brought my wine, a pretty bad windstorm begun. It was strong enough to topple my bottle of wine (I was holding my glass ;). The restaurant was packed, yet they moved us all immediately inside. Since I was traveling solo, got a bar seat in front of the grill right away. I heard all the back-of-the-house logistics on making sure the pipeline was kept intact. I was offered a new bottle of wine (I refused since very little spilled). People that were waiting standing were offered drinks and some freebies. People stranded after rain flooded the streets were ordered cabs, and given free snacks while waiting for it. So yes, service was outstanding. Food is really good. I had the ribeye (ojo de bife) medium-rare + 5F ("jugoso"), and it's one of the nicest steaks I've had. Argentinian mastery of steak charcoal grilling is legendary, and my steak was perfect! Wine is a bit on the expensive side, but it's in part because they only offer premium wine. My waiter suggested a bottle of Catalpa 2016 and it was pretty good. Much better than any of the alternatives per glass. read more

We tried to eat here on Sunday but we couldn't get reservations and we couldn't wait. It was like 7:30pm when we arrived. Fair. We came back the next day and stood in line and were seated pretty quickly. We were also given champagne while we waited in line which was a nice touch. We ordered steak, fries, and zucchini. It was awesome to see them cut, season, and cook the meat in the main dining area. I ordered a thin cut....but the piece of meat was like the size of my head. I could not finish it. But it was good. I can't lie. But this place was lacking in two areas, drinks and dessert. First, almost every wine was by the bottle. And the one by the glass did not have much variety. But there was also no cocktails to choose from. Then we ordered the flan. The flan tasted like sugared egg but had dulce de leche on the side. It was like a huge glop placed on the plate. It probably would have been better if the dulce was incorporated into the flan. Personally, the experience wasn't worth the effort to get a table there. read more

Excellent T-bone steak with a side of mushrooms. A bit pricey but really tasty beef! Next time, I would probably not order the mushrooms because there was so much food. read more
A classic. Old school steakhouse with excellent service. After my 2 visits, it's hard not to compare this place to La Cabrera "LC" (see my other review) which is also in the same busy, tourist-infested neighborhood. Both places seem to be full of locals also, so the wait can be quite long. Avoid the peak time, then the wait should not be too bad. (not sure if they take reservation). The dining room is rustic, with good elbow room and the service is impeccable. (a slight step above LC). I had a glass of red wine (2nd or 3rd from the cheapest) and it was excellent. The wine list is quite impressive and they are supposedly famous for the selection. I had the Ojo (ribeye) one visit and the short ribs during another. The ojo was excellent, if not a bit fattier than most. The short ribs (one of the more expensive cuts here) were ok and rather tough. So the meat quality and execution alone is not as good as LC, in my non-expert opinion. The pieces are a bit larger at LC. All dishes were ordered medium rare. If you search for value (portion size vs price) then this place cannot compete with LC. The steak comes with classic chimichurri sauce and onion/tomato in oil/vinegar dip. While LC gives you myriads of side dishes and sauces. Based on this, one would need to order a side dish like a salad or fries to go with a steak here, The sides are a bit pricey in my opinion, while at LC the little sides are all complimentary. Basically one cannot be disappointed to come here for a great steak and good service. Price is a bit higher than LC. The wait time is probably equally bad. LC seems more fun and conducive to go with a group and share. read more

Hard to make a reservation at, this local parilla is definitely worth the wait on any given night. They open at 7pm, so be careful of where you get your info, as to get a table that isn't reserved, you'll need to be there at opening. They've got a great outdoor patio with plenty of tables that are covered with an awning. Great way to dine in the summer and fall. I've now been here 2 times and I've had the same conclusion twice - they have great cuts of meat and they prepare it the best. I've ordered table fries both times as well, and they know their way around the French fry as well. Crisp, crunchy, soft on the inside, fresh, but most importantly, not too oily. The bread basket is full of hot bread, with great dipping options (butter, salsa, oil and spices, refreshed frequently). They've been raising prices lately with the weak economy and the unofficial rate of exchange finally falling in line with the government rate. Either way, relative to the US, the steaks are a bargain. They've got an expansive wine list to pair off your meal to boot. One of my favorites in buenos Aires, and for such a well known place, it's still mostly filled with locals. read more

The BEST steak of my life! We are here during our two week honeymoon in Argentina. I will have dreams about this steak. I can't recommend the lomo enough. Wow! I want to go back to Buenos Aires just for this dinner! read more
