Don Melquias Mexican Restaurant is a bit out of our range, and we do like the place that is closer to us... But we see this add in our Church bulletin every Sunday, for "15% OFF - Good only Wed, Sat, Sun - With Bulletin", so we decide to give it a try. It was perfectly OK, with very good service. I'm a sucker for a relleno, so I had the: "CHILE RELLENO DINNER One poblano pepper stuffed with ground beef, chicken or cheese, covered with our amazing queso sauce. $11.99" It was good, but I'm still in search for a grilled option. Since it's a new to us place, Thuy went for the: "MEXICAN DINNER One beef enchilada with queso sauce, one chicken enchilada with sour cream sauce and one tamale with chili sauce. $12.25" Pretty good. Ate lunch here today for the first time in a few months. In the past, I always thought the food was decent enough but today was disappointing. The food was served at room temperature, lacked flavor & was nothing special. The salsa had an overly strong cumin taste. Our waitress was mediocre & never once asked us how our food was. Didn't even receive a simple "thank you" when we paid our bill. Too bad, this place is minutes from my house but so NOT worth the drive. read more

This is our go to spot in Acton when headed to the lake. They recently updated the inside (see photo) and included new tables. They have COLD beer and the service is always outstanding. Houston is super helpful and is our waiter most of the time. We get the chicken fajitas and it's a huge portion that comes out. My son gets the chicken strips and loves them also. read more

This is the Benbrook location For a newly open restaurant, I'm giving them the GREAT score. First our waiter kept our salsa and chips replenished... which I'm not sure was a good thing, as both are very tasty. My first choice of a Chili Relleno (stuff chili) the kitchen was out of. My second Enchilada La Bandera was very good. We also a Fajita salad and it was a generous portion as well and very good. The service was excellent. The waiter did everything to keep us happy. Also, I liked that the manager was out on the floor observing and helping. Don't expect if you don't inspect! The ambiance does need some improvement. The noise level is good... much better than most restaurants. The light level is over the top...bright! Appears to be new lighting.. hopefully a dimmer can be installed. There is still an 'office' in the front that really could be used for a guest waiting area and really help the traffic flow at the front door, as it is really crowded with people coming and going. It's take away from the dining experience to be standing in the way of people attempting to leave and no where to move to with people coming in. There is a patio! I have been told that the space is not usable. I hope that is not the case or repairs are coming soon. It was be a nice place to enjoy drinks and dinner. I was very surprised at the quality of the food. We were a party of four and waited for 50 minutes for our food. I'm guessing they're shorthanded by the hiring signage they have posted.  We ordered fish tacos, flautas, and cheese enchiladas. The enchiladas we sent back to reheat and the fish tacos were just bland. The flautas weren't anything to brag about. The trio of Fajitas were okay! However, the chicken and shrimp were very dry, and the beef fajitas were tasty but tough.  The waitress we had seemed to do the best she could. Just because a parking lot is full doesn't mean the food is good. Being the only Mexican restaurant in town, it is what it is. read more

The biggest joke honestly. I got the cheese enchiladas with chili sauce, couldnt eat more than one bite. They were terrible. The beans even tasted disgusting. Got my son a corndog and fries. The food is excellent, the ambiance is enjoyable and the service is very pleasant. I have eaten a lot of Mexican food in my lifetime but I can honestly say this place is my favorite. The flavors are wonderful. Most of the dishes are on the spicy side. My niece brought me here originally, pointed out that my enchilada sauces were the colors of the Mexican flag. The chicken enchiladas were packed full of meat, the beef enchilada was also packed full of meat. They're poblano pepper was delicious. There are several other items on their menu. I want to try prior to traveling on. For the ambience, she pointed out the fact that every booth had a painted scene on it that was unique to that booth. The chairs if you sit at a table, I found more comfortable than the boost simply because they were more barreled shape. I am a full-time RVer. Texas is my home state and I cannot get enough of it. But I can honestly say the Mexican food here is the best I have had, where the restaurant still exist today and the families have continued it. Before I leave this area, I will make several more trips to this restaurant. read more

Super disappointed with our service tonight. Have been fairly regular at this restaurant for many years. Have always had great service. We had a new waitress tonight. She was awful. She was also extremely rude. I kept waiting for her to say or do something nice - it never happened. I asked for a margarita with no salt and it came with salt. No biggie. But she took it back to the bar and dumped it into another glass. As if I wouldn't notice. Wow. All that did was make it taste even saltier. With a health issue I do watch my salt and I am not just whining. Next she proceeded to drag the bottom of the salsa pitcher through the food on my dinner plate. Gross. She brought my dad a beer in the bottle and never asked him if he would like a glass. He is usually offered a cold mug. Several other examples I won't bore you with. Actually nothing here is earth shattering, but it was all done with a rude look in her face. As if she was out out helping us. Not an ounce of kindness, just pure ugliness. Too bad. I am not sure I will be back. After years and this new waitress comes along and treats us awfully. read more

Brought a party of 7. Waited 10mins to be greeted at the door. When we asked for the only open table large enough for our party, the waitress dismissed us and gave the table to her friend, who had come in after us and stepped in front of me to interrupt our conversation and ask for the same table we did. Although I've been to Don Melquia's in the past, it wasn't until now that I decided to write a review of them. Hidden in a small cove in Acton (within Granbury), Don Melquia's has filled the void of a long-standing home-style restaurant. No, literally. The restaurant (home) has been around for many years, but has a long standing succession of failures. From Italian to Seafood, this "home" appears to have been the bane of many ill-fated attempts for owners to brew up their menus and eats, only to succumb to financial downfalls and ultimate closure. I can only hope that Don Melquia's does not follow suit. The menu is broad, but serves up dishes that will fit just about any taste bud. From common Tex-Mex enchiladas, burritos and tacos, to more home-style grilled specialties, the flavors are consistent and GOOD! Don M's even caters to those with a more "sensitive" palate; serving tone-down "American" style eats. Most items are served with traditional rice and bean staples, but they also have some wonderful charro beans as well. Combination platters with an array of favorites, or Tex-Mex standards are evident throughout the menu. Kids will enjoy items of appropriate size for them as well. Actually, I've gone to Don M's for the past two days. Yes, really. Why? The SPECIALS!! In a word - DELICIOUS! Last night, I enjoyed the Chuletas con Salsa Verde (Pork pieces with spicy green sauce). They were served with a light crispness in a succulent green sauce and topped with some melted shredded cheese. Along with the plate was a small scoop of guacamole, and a mound of fresh Pico de Gallo. Three flour tortillas (you can substitute corn if desired), and the standard rice and refried beans rounded out the plate. The green sauce was spicy, but not too much (at least for me, but I like spicy). Loading these succulent pieces of meat into tortillas with a dab of Guac and Pico were a heavenly experience in taste and satiety. Clearly another awesome choice. Price - $10.95. Today, I tried the Shrimp Tacos with Lime Chipotle sauce. I was served three small corn tortillas with a nice portion of grilled shrimp, lettuce, onions, cilantro, and the chipotle sauce. No sooner than I was done with the first one, I realized I had eaten the last before I knew it. Served with a side of charro beans and Pico, it was a perfect "light" early lunch. Price $8.95. In the past, I've found the enchiladas, tacos, and such to be good, but basic. No real frills here. The real jems are the higher-end grilled specialties. From grilled chicken, steak, and seafood, the consistency and flavor is superb! Often smothered in an array of succulent sauces, and heartily served on a hot plate. PRICES: Fair and competitive for the area. Most basic dishes are around $8, while the grilled menu is around $11 per item. Chips and salsa are readily available, and the salsa is quite good as well. CONS: Service is the only thing that remains inconsistent here. Most of the time it is satisfactory, while at others it is simply "fair" at best. Faces seem to come and go often, likely due to some of the financial and physical demographics of the location. Most of the wait staff appears genuinely helpful, while some -- apathetic and devoid of personality. It's a crap-shoot. Likewise, the guacamole is terribly bland, and lacking in any form of flavor. A pinch of salt and squeeze of lime would do it wonders. INSIDE: The decor is tacky, but with point. Bright colors of pale green, yellow, and pink demonstrate a traditional Mexican color palate. Pretty hand-painted murals, and cute hangings adorn the walls and shelves. The floor is carpeted, but insanely creaky at times. Every vibration is felt from passers-by, but it's just part of the charm. SEATING: Appears as a disarray of tables and chairs that has no real pattern, but remember, you are in an old house where such "plans" are subject to "making do." The chairs are comfortable, and the tables quite nice. PERKS: For those who drink, it is a BYOB location. I've seen a number of people bring in bottles of wine, packs of beer, and even pre-made margarita mixers. They are ready to accommodate with glasses and cork-screws as needed. Most items are not over-bearing with salt (unlike the fascination that most restaurants in Granbury appear to have). This is a good thing. I have been in far too many restaurants here to know that SALT appears in such commodity and excess, that they should put it as an "item" on the menus. With such an aged population, it makes me fearful (literally) that such people would be pushed over-the-edge into heart failure as a result of dining in Granbury. Sad, but true. Luckily, Don M's is not guilty of this crime at all. In my experience, I've found that these so-called hole-in-the-wall restaurants are often the best. They are compelled by reputation (rather than name) to do their very best, and Don M's is no exception. I have yet to walk out of there disappointed with the food, and still come back every time. read more

Wow! I'm glad I didn't see these reviews beforehand, because I might not have given this place a try. I'm new to the area and I drive by here every day. The thing I noticed is that it appears to be busy every time I drive by, which is a good sign! So I decided to give it a shot a few days ago and was I ever glad that I did. We ordered the combination fajitas for two and I do believe it was pretty nearly the best fajitas that I've ever had. Our server, Felicia, was very prompt and the food came out pretty quick. We were in there at about 8pm, so we did miss the rush, which worked out in our favor. I would give it 5 stars, but like others mentioned, the building is looking a little bit rough around the edges. I think the owners are due to give the place a little facelift. Despite that, I'm very glad I found this place, and I will definitely be back soon! read more

So we came here due to the awesome reviews, but I'm not sure why the reviews are so good. We waited for an hour for our food. I ordered chicken fajitas but got steak instead. The tortillas tasted like store bought packaged tortillas. The chips and salsa tasted odd. And my husbands stacked enchiladas he couldn't even finish. The waitress while very nice was talking on a headset while we were ordering and the bar was out of margaritas. The waitress comped the enchiladas as my husband didn't like them. But overall my best advice is if you like really good Tex mex with lots of flavor try somewhere else. If you like mild, generic whole in the wall Tex mex you will probably be happy. read more

Literal children run the floor, you will be seated by a 14 yr old. It's also the filthiest place I've ever seen. I don't know how this place is still open. That all came to me when I used their restroom. They give you the tiniest bowl of salsa, and you'll have to ask for more chips. Slow service and small portions of not the greatest food. We really enjoyed eating here! The salsa and chips were very good. Our waiter was fairly new but he was able to answer most of our questions. I ordered the shrimp tacos and my husband ordered the molcajete. I wish there had been more shrimp in the tacos but they had a great flavor. My husband really liked his dish.
