Had the pleasure of visiting this quaint small corner restaurant while on the Northshore. The owners were soo personable. They asked me about my family, what brought me to their restaurant, checked on us often at the table, and wished us safety traveling back home to the Southshore. The kids and I enjoyed our food. I'd give Don Taco Village zero stars if I could. I've been out to eat enough times to know that no experience will be perfect, but the number of disappointing aspects of this restaurant is mind-boggling. We went to Don Taco Village for lunch and wanted to beat the rush, so we arrived a little before noon. The restaurant was empty and filled with smoke. At first it smelled amazing, but after sitting in that environment for a while, my eyes began to burn. Since it was our first time, we sat with the menus to decide what we wanted before we ordered at the counter. After walking up to the counter, we probably waited at least five minutes for the woman to come out of the kitchen and help us. We ordered two birria tacos, one Don Taco style-grilled steak taco, a medium chori-queso, one street corn, and two drinks. We wanted horchata and melon but were told they didn't have either. We settled on two lime-cucumber drinks, which were WAY too sweet. According to the prices on their printed menus, our total before tax should've been $26.50. Instead, our total was $42.00. The woman kept having to answer the phone and take orders while she was ringing us up, so we didn't have a chance to clarify the price difference. The tacos were tasty, but very small. There was no chorizo in the chori-queso and it was watery and tasteless. The chips were overly fried. When our food was brought to us the woman said the street corn was on the way. By this point, there was a line nearly out the door and it was just this one woman taking orders, answering the phone, and bussing tables. Eventually the street corn came after we had finished the rest of our food. It was mediocre at best. Why is this place so popular? The food is incredibly over priced (assuming they raised their prices and didn't update their menus?) and the service isn't great. STAY AWAY!!! read more

I totally understand that true, authentic Mexican food isn't going to be the same as your familiar round-the-block TexMex place, but this experience fell far from the hype. I should mention that being a NOLA & Red Stick transplant means the bar for an authentic taqueria is very high, but I just can't find anything positive to say about Don Taco. I was bummed to see that they did not have any homemade sauces on the tables in the dining room, which (to me) has always been a standard in any hole-in-the-wall taqueria. The chorizo / queso appetizer gave me flashbacks to the nachos served at sports arena concession stands - complete with the palate-burning flavor of gov'ment cheese, only with a much more watery consistency. Good luck getting their queso to stay on any chip. The chips were overdone and greasy, meaning that the overwhelming aroma of burned theater popcorn was all I could taste in comparison to their pasteurized-cheese-byproduct-water-sauce. I paid $10.99 for 3 anemic tacos that left me begging for any semblance of flavor or moisture. One taco consisted of 2 tiny chopped shrimp, another taco was a few flakes of what I can only assume is great value tilapia, with the last taco claiming to be their signature "signature" steak... and sure, if you enjoy chewing flavorless leather, have at it! My partner ordered the stuffed poblano (not sure if there's a specific reason they didn't call it a chili relleno?) and while we were first impressed with the size of the poblano pepper, we quickly realized it only appeared to be that size because the core and seeds were still intact. The only reason I left without my stomach growling was because I polished off the beans and rice - doused with a good bit of picante sauce - from both of our plates. I am genuinely hoping that this experience was the result of an off day, as I am normally a huge advocate for any family-owned eateries. $30 and 3 hours later, my stomach and my palate are still begging me for sustenance. If it were ever suggested I try this place again, I would begrudgingly oblige, but not without a fight. read more

If you're looking for street tacos, this is the place! I've heard good things so we stopped in for lunch on a Monday. Service was fast and friendly. We had a few different tacos and enjoyed them all, especially the chorizo and veggie. Two spicy sauces are provided. They definitely had some heat. Tacos are $3 a piece but are very fresh and packed with toppings. I would definitely return for more. The restaurant itself is cozy, clean, and cheery. Wide array of lunch items, mostly tacos and the drinks are sold separately there are no fountain drinks. The meals do not come with chips and salsa $4.99 but we ordered them anyway, they were good but not your typical salsa, it was bright orange and warm but still tasty. Average meals are $8.50 and came with rice and beans but my order came with a beef broth with onions, and my tacos came with radish and pickled red onions on the side, it was very tasty. Super cute restaurant, offering takeout orders from their kitchen window during quarantine! Friendly staff, and good prices! As everyone has already said super authentic, and beyond wonderfully fresh food. Burrito comes with white rice and beans(soo good), lettuce, cilantro, and can opt for grilled or raw onions. I wrote to them on social media to find out how many came in an order and how much and never got a response. 3 comes in an order for 11.00 with the side of consommé. This wouldn't be a bad price if they had more meat and cheese in them or they were a little larger. The pictures they posted online showed much larger tacos with 5 in an order. I have passed by this place several times. Finally gave it a try one night after work a few months ago and it was amazing! I've been a few times since then and I have not once been disappointed. Always delicious. Great customer service and even better food. Very clean environment and fast service. I highly recommend their Chorizo-queso, birria tacos, birria pizza-dilla, churros, and their traditional street tacos. Some of the best food I've had since moving to Covington. Arrived about 430pm for early dinner. Despite it being about 80degrees inside from an A/C issue, we stayed. Ordered a Birria combo and a 3 taco plate, chips and guacamole and jamaica. Chips and guacamole were fine, had a good feeling about the food since delicious looking photos of the food are all around the register. Unfortunately whoever cooked our food today intermingled it with burned/scorched grill char. All the meat on the tacos - and the outside and inside of the birria tortillas - tasted scorched and burned. You know, like the scorched flavor from letting a pot sit on the stove with beans in it and then stirring the scorched black bits of nasty through all the food. The meat in the tacos and the whole birria were disgusting and inedible. So we stopped eating. I tried each taco to confirm it was the same. The real gag is that the waitress did in fact ask us if everything was okay. Two 200 pound men not even half eating two taco plates should be a cause for concern. So we told her no, explained why, and she shrugged and said "we cook all of our food exactly the same way". No offer to taste it or remake it. And no, we didn't eat anymore. You didn't get almost 5 stars on google with burnt, scorched bits of grill crap in all the food you serve. This isn't the street food in their photos, it isn't the food that a food truck would serve, and they absolutely don't care. I'm sure someone who works there knows how to cook and clean a grill, but they weren't there today. Avoid. read more

The shrimp tacos are like little bites of heaven. The shrimp are perfectly flavored and grilled, and the mango, onion, and cilantro set them off beautifully. Actually inedible. The lady asked "how is everything" and when I kindly told her what my concerns were, she gave me a sarcastic response saying "yeah they're tacos made on the grill, so thats why they're like that".....This isn't my first time having birria, and I know how they are prepared, but the lack of accountability or acknowledgement that we were not happy with the food rubbed me the wrong way. I get that this restaurant is a no-frills, hole in the wall place. However, the nachos that I had were awful. The meat was over cooked, dry and too salty. The tortilla chips were very greasy and weren't drained well when pulled out of the fryer. The other toppings only consisted of a few onions, cilantro and an attempt at pickled onions. No tomatoes, no jalapeños, just barely enough to qualify as nachos. Here's the kicker that did it in for me, the cheese wasn't even real melted cheese.
