Donahues has a great selection of fresh fish. Their cooked shrimp can't be beat-it's perfect every time. We love the coconut shrimp when we are up to the splurge. My aunt and I stopped at Donahue's fish market for lunch. So glad she recommended this place! Lots of people think it's only a fish market but you can get food too. Since I was craving a lobster roll, she thought of this local spot with FRESH lobster. Some places you go to the lobster is squishy with small pieces, which is a sigh of being frozen. At first glance you can tell the lobster is fresh. The pieces are giant! Lobster rolls come with mayo or butter. My aunt got the mayo version. I got the butter version. Your lobster roll comes with fries but you have the option to upgrade to other sides. We selected onion rings and sweet potato fries. So good! The staff there is so friendly. I have been going to Donahue's for 10 + years and it has always been outstanding. Their fish, shell fish is incredibly fresh and their premade selections just keep increasing with new sides and/or premade meals with cooking instructions on them. Donahues is family owned and they hire knowledgeable folks with great customer service, which is hard to find these days. They have a small seating area/ restaurant style booths as they have special meals advertised everyday. You can get a fresh piece of fish cooked to your liking and 2 side dishes for under $20.00. HIDDEN GEM ALERT**** stopped in got two fresh lobster rolls, looked at them a little sideways cause I am a simple guy and don't look for lettuce and do look for a grilled hot dog roll, simple. So these had one piece of lettuce and they are in what I think is a potato roll, grilled on the inside so, different... let me tell you. The roll has a great combo of softness and perhaps a little sweetness and with the FRESH Lobster it is a great combination. We also got a side of fried clams and they were lightly battered and cooked in nice fresh oil they were delicious! So glad we finally stopped in for lunch and we will definitely be back! We started buying fish from this Donahue a year ago and it's always been very good until yesterday. I purchased haddock at 18+ per pound (outrageously expensive) and it smelled kind of fishy which if you know anything about fish you should smell NOTHING if it's really fresh. My wife and I prepared it with a traditional recipe and it was really terrible. Got indigestion from haddock???? Really. Really disappointed and will never go there again. I have been a customer of this establishment for over 20 yrs. But lately I have been disappointed by the p attitude of the staff. When I made a point when being ignore by a salesperson ( who was rude to me 3 hrs prior) that was my braking point. When a customer is standing at the counter for over 2 min w a sales clerk right there, I would expect an acknowledgment of your presence or any eye contact. But when I made my presence known, I was met with hostility and then further made to feel bad by being reprimanded by the next person. Felt like why am I giving this establishment my business and being reprimanded for my behavior. Owner followed me out to parking lot and after hearing my complaint told me not to come back. Stopped by to see what they had as I had no plans for dinner. The place was clean, clean, clean, and DID NOT smelly fishy. I was immediately helped and service was great. I liked that they had much local fish which was actually labeled where it was caught (much of today was caught off Gloucester, MA. ) They also offer cooked seafood meals here like a fish & chips, clam plates, and steamed lobsters. Wow, food was fresh, not greasy, decent portions, and great flavors! One of the best that we've tried throughout the seacoast for fish and chips which I use for any seafood place since your almost guaranteed to find that on any menu. Coconut shrimp was legit! Purchased four 2lb lobsters, 1lb of steamers, two Stuffed Clams, two Stuffed Scallops, and a small container of coleslaw. The lobster and steamers were excellent, as were the stuffed clams/scallops. The coleslaw, however, was underwhelming. It was fresh enough but (for me), the vegetables were cut too finely, and it could of used more mayo and a pinch of celery salt. My husband and I picked up 3 pounds of Alaskan King Crab legs today, spent close to $100, expecting quality crab as we normally buy these from Mckinnons but wanted to support our local fish market.... these were very disappointing... soo salty and the shells were harder than ever... we never put anything on our crab as they are normally sweet tasting as is.... these were so over salty we couldn't even eat a quarter of what we bought. Absolute garbage, Asked where the lobsters were from and was lied to. Was told they were from Maine and they were not. I was immediately aware of the fraudulent place of origin when i started boiling them and was overwhelmed by the toxic stench of a Boston harbor lobster. The meat tasted like you imagine a septic system would taste like. Threw out the entire $105 worth. Also paid $4 more a pound for hard shell and got a soft shell in the mix. A family owned business that focuses on just one thing - seafood. Well, that and keeping the store clean. This is the place to go for fresh fish. While it is a little more expensive than the grocery store, its worth paying the extra for the quality. We go here for lobsters, mussels and clams and being in there brings back memories. I dont think they have the restaurant anymore, but we used to make our own food anyways. Update: we just got a lot of lobsters and musself from donahues and the mussels smelled so clean and fresh, exactly what you need when it comes to seafood. I've been craving clam chowder for a while now. I grew up on Turners clam chowder (in Melrose, MA) who in my opinion supplied the best clam chowder in the world. Unfortunately I just moved up to Amesbury and can't make that 45min. drive every time I have a craving... but i digress. I have driven by Donahues many times, it's right on 125 in Plaistow, right next to Reds Shoe Barn. I never stopped in because, well, ordering fresh fish in Plaistow just didnt seem necessary when you have coastal towns just miles away. After reading reviews I learned that they actually ship their fish in daily from Gloucester, so it really is fresh. We walked in and headed downstairs. It's a small place and it does smelly fishy, but what else would you expect. Although it's small they have a lot in there and it takes a minute to absorb it all. The service was great, very friendly and helpful. I got a quart of clam chowder for $7.99 (plenty of leftovers!) and the bf got a chicken finger meal. I was a little concerned when the guy pulled a carton of "clam chowder" out of a refrigerator, but they heat it up and it certainly tastes fresh, it must just be pre-made in the morning. Nevertheless it is delicious. Creamy but not too thick with a healthy supply of clams and potatoes. I would definitely recommend it and while it isn't Turners it certainly satisfies the craving. the bf wasnt overly impressed with the chicken fingers and soggy fries... but next time we go he's got a lot of other things to choose from. We have gotten the fried plates here before and they weren't bad (small/med portions, high end of average price) but again, you get what you pay for. The place is very clean. My wife and I went back to Donahue's Fish Market for the first time in years. We both had the fried haddock plate with fries and slaw, and shared clam strips and o-rings. Inside is clean and does not smell of fish. Both the Haddock and Clam strips were very good with a light batter. The c-ring were crispy and lightly battered as well. The portion were good sized and we both had leftovers. Only 4 booths inside so more for takeout but seating area was clean if you want to sit and eat. We are happy we tried it and we will be back. My only criticism is the drink selection, only a couple of Pepsi products in bottles only and some iced teas in bottles as well. read more

I love Donahue's!! I get fish here several times a week and it's always fresh. People are very kind that work here. We recently tried their to-go menu and they took special care in preparing a gluten free meal for my family (even offered gluten free breadcrumbs!). I had the lobster roll it was perfect. This is the place to buy fish in the Plaistow area. It's fresh and with only one exception on the last 15 years, really good. They also have prepared dishes that you just throw in the oven to bake, and meat. The vegetable selection isn't great, but it's better than you'll usually find in a fish market. Now that the Route 125 construction seems to be over, getting there is reasonable again. Prices are slightly higher than at the supermarkets, quality is significantly higher. And the people who work there know what they're talking about. Occasionally you'll get someone who's working after school and is new, but it's rare and that person is never alone. read more
