Highly inappropriate and disgusting behavior from two young employees. My boyfriend and I went to register #4 at 7:00 PM on 3/16. I don't know the baggers name but I'm pretty sure the cashier was Thomas M since it's on my receipt but management should easily be able to identify them through the cameras and register records for that time. When we approached the register, the cashier and bagger were openly discussing a girl and making sexual comments about her body. They were saying things about how she had a "nice body" making hand motions over the chest and sliding there's hands down there body aand implying she gets "passed around," along with other disrespectful and inappropriate remarks. It was honestly shocking to hear employees speak that way while standing directly in front of customers. What made it worse was that they didn't acknowledge us at all. No greeting, no eye contact, and they didn't even tell us the total. They continued their conversation the entire time while checking us out. This did not feel like a one-time slip. They seemed very comfortable speaking this way in front of customers, which makes me believe this kind of behavior may happen regularly. I am handicapped and used Instacart sometimes for the delivery of groceries I bought. I have 2 problems with the manager of this grocery store. 1) I bought Babyback ribs on Oct 22nd and it was delivered by Instacaart. The sell by/use by date was October 27th. I wanted to cook it on Sunday the 26th. I opened the package on Sunday and the meat stunk! Called Market Basket immediately. Told the girl over the phone about the problem and said I cannot make it there to bring it back right away and that it may not be until Wednesday or Thursday that I would be down as that is when I can get a ride to that store. She said that was not a problem. Got a ride this past Thursday to bring it back and had much trouble. There was a young boy working at the desk and he called the manager who did not talk to me but to the kid. I wanted to talk to him and he ignored me. i was not allowed to exchange it as I wanted to do. They only gave me back the money it cost or pay the $18 difference. NOT HAPPY! 2) Through the later part of the summer and this autumn, I went to Market Basket at various times (3pm, 3:30pm, 5pm, 6 pm) to buy a meatball sub. Was told they were out of it ? ? ? My son also went there for a meatball sub during his work break (6pm) and was told the same thing. Out of meatballs? They are frozen and cooked! Can't believe they are out of meatballs so many times. As I wrote in my 2016 review, I'm a Market Basket fan. The Plaistow store is the closest to me, but it's one of the weaker links in the chain. Some parts are tightly packed. The toiletries and cosmetics aisle has displays running all down the middle, effectively dividing it into two aisles each wide enough for just one shopping cart. You can get stuck behind someone and have to back out. Recently the price scanner was removed from the bread aisle, and I've been told it's not going to be replaced, even though that's the aisle that most needs a scanner. Most of the pre-packaged bread doesn't have clearly marked prices, and now you have to take it to a scanner three aisles away to find out what a loaf costs. The excuse I've been offered only makes it worse. Yes, prices are printed on the plastic; but they're impossible to read, and they're the suggested retail price, not the store price. When I mentioned this problem on Nextdoor, some people who may or may not be Plaistow store employees told me I'm lazy for not wanting to carry loaves three aisles over to scan them and that I should be grateful that the store sells bread at all. Not all Market Baskets are created equally. Lately several new or refreshed stores have popped up in the area and this one has been left in a stale state and in desperate need for an improvement. No prepared food section, smaller store and leaky ceiling tiles to name a few. Go to the newer store in Epping which is 16 miles if you can or to the newer one in Haverhill which is 4.3 miles but you will have bottle deposit. This store does have a very good selection of Gluten Free products which some of the newer stores don't have. That I do find odd. Rumors have been flying the last few years that a new store is going to be built or they are going to try to figure out how to make the vacant old Rite Aid stable so they can expand at the current location. read more

The produce is most of the time questionable, if they happen to have it in. Be careful, very careful of who you ask for help in produce. Do NOT ask the produce manager ANYTHING. Unless you want to get a dirty look with a questionable response. Because if it is on 'the TRUCK' most likely you will walk away feeling like it is just 'your problem'. I will say that most of the sub-managers, i.e., meat department are really, really lovely and go out of their way to help. Although, products that you have been looking for, sometimes a week or more 'are back ordered and/or on that damn TRUCK'. I want to know, seriously. WHERE IS THAT TRUCK? Louisiana? Please whatever you do not take you frustrations out on the very, very LOVELY checkers and baggers. TRULY they are SAINTS! Hit or miss. Meat used to be top quality, produce meh, over the past year i'm paying more for meat. McKinnon price but crap quality. Just spent 24 on ribs, they were all gristle, no meat. Had to throw away hotdogs because the guy at the deli counter gave me dogs that were slimy, old, smelled sour. Lazy staff and poor quality. Last trip there deli counter was yelling at a customer because she ordered something they don't have although she was reading off the card in the case. I will be purchasing all my meats at McKinnons, at least I know i'm getting the quality i expect for the price. Good stuff: Low prices, helpful employees, good selection, convenient Mon thru Sat hours. They'll be expanding once the Rite Aid moves out. Bad stuff: They close at 7 on Sunday. Produce often rung it at wrong price. The stores look outdated. You want inexpensive groceries, go to Market Basket. Any location will do you. They have no cult card but you don't need one, they are consistently lower on prices than the competitors. You will even find the other stores having sale prices that are the same price Market Basket charges every day. I've even found that many of my weekly purchases are cheaper at Market Basket than at BJ's, plus I don't need to buy 100 lbs of it. My biggest gripe is that the cashiers often will key the wrong code on produce so I end up paying more. They will refund it when you bring the receipt back but what a pain. If it weren't for the overcharging and the Sunday hours they'd get a 5. Edit 03/19: Brought my receipt back for the latest overcharge. Made out on the deal, so shouldn't complain ... but seriously??!?!?! Here's why: I got a full refund of the item. The whole amount, not just the difference in price. I pointed out to the clerk that they were giving me way more than necessary. I will only do full grocery shopping at MB. The prices are so cheap compared to everywhere else. The produce isnt alwyas the freshest though so check it out first. We dont normally buy the fish there either as you can actually handle it yourself to check for freshness. Id skip that section. Everything else is cheap though and sometimes they have good managers specials on meats which you shoudl put into the freezer or use immediately. It is hard to find health food products though but they are doing better with stocking as people request it. My biggest peeve with MB is that during the busiest times of the day they have their workers stocking shelves which means they are nothing but in your way and rude about it. Theyre kids but they should learn to get the hell out of my way when im shopping. I wish management would do a better job with waiting to stock til its less busy. Imagine 7 people trying to squeeze through because a stocker and his pallet are taking up all the space. Bottle neck galore. read more

Market Deli OMG Paige hand crafted the most beautiful and most delicious Italian Cold Cut Sub Sandwich. She layered a wonderful assortment of fresh meats inside a wonderful fresh and soft sub roll. Carefully putting in all the veggys we requested. She is a beautiful young lady who should expect lots of Marriage Proposals if she keeps up this tasty quality. An average supermarket with average prices and produce that seems to have a shorter shelf life than the more expensive nearby Shaw's. Parking isn't great and like most supermarkets, avoid weekends if you can. The fish department is one of my least favorite ones anywhere except maybe the Market Basket in Portsmouth. Don't expect great things here, you're not paying for them and you're not going to get them. But for basics (for example: anything you need to make nachos) this is a place to save a few dollars. My father in law has been shopping for years at their Plaistow location. Can I just tell you how kind the employees are to him! He's 89. There's a few Roxanne and Nancy who are especially kind to him. We walk in the door and they always smile and say hi. Last Sunday we decided it would be best to use the electric cart, we had no idea how to work it, don't you know Nancy came right over and assisted. Roxanne is his go to girl, he can't find something so he finds her. Just super nice employees. MB is very lucky to have such great employees! read more

Typical 70's looking MB, but inexpensive and convenient for me. There isn't a day that it is not busy, but hey I hate food shopping no matter how many other annoying people there are. The employees are professional and courteous (except one airheaded young lady at the fast lane checkout). They simply don't carry the same products as other local supermarkets and it annoys me because its the only MB in the area (besides right over the MA border) so thats why they only get 4 and not 5 stars. The fish/deli area always smells too. I hate that smell. And I hate taking a number to wait at the deli too I feel like I am at an auction or something. The best part about this store is the employees. I'm not just saying so because of the recent brouhaha either. I have always been impressed by the willingness of the deli, fish, meat and produce workers to go the extra mile to make my shopping experience a good one. Any worker there, if asked about the availability or whereabouts of an item, will help you find it or go out back to see if a new shipment has come in if it's out of stock. When it's pouring rain outside, management has employees available at the door to accompany you to your car with an umbrella. The store is showing its age, but honestly I like its smaller size because it carries groceries and doesn't try to be WalMart by carrying lots of non-grocery items. Their fish selection is especially nice (and so is the young lady who often waits on me there). Yesterday to honor the boycott I went to a Hannaford's. The only fresh (not previously frozen)and wild caught (not farm raised) fish available was swordfish at $13.99/lb. I am also suspicious of the fish they sell pre-marinated -- old, perhaps? I once asked for them to carry an item and there it was a month or so later. Anyway I hope the current issue is settled soon because I miss shopping at my Market Basket. read more

I gave them 3 stars because they are in fact my every day grocery store. Just can't stand the crowds and lines. Especially at the deli. Most of the deli workers are polite and working hard, there just doesn't seem to be enough of them sometimes. You can go when they first open and you will still wait up to 10-minutes and sometimes more. There are very few Cashiers here that move at a pace faster than a snail climbing up a molasses covered hill on a windy day. No one appears to be moving with any intention to get you taken care of and out the door quickly. It is honestly painful. Just yesterday we spent over 20-minutes getting rung out. And that was not because of long lines. We walked right up to the conveyer. Cashier was hardly awake. She just stared at everything and couldn't find the UPC to scan on anything. And forget about the vegetable. Those took 5-minutes each to ring-up. read more

She checked and found that they do carry the product but that it is temporarily out of stock. Love, love, love!!! The first time I shopped at this particular Market Basket I was completely impressed with their customer service!!! Everyone is polite, helpful, and happy! They'll help you load groceries in your car, hold an umbrella over your head while you walk to your car in the rain, they chat with you and always help you find what your looking for! I find the prices MUCH cheaper than any other store! They have great savings, deals, in store coupons, coupon policies, and great staff! My only complaint about this particular location is it's always packed!!! I'm pretty sure it's the only Market Basket for several surrounding towns, making it very busy... Especially the deli. Still, even with the crowd the store is worth it!!! read more

Unbelievable customer service! We went to the butcher for a spoon roast and they didn't have any left with a good fat cap. The butcher ran around back and actually reconstructed our roast and added a nice thick cap for us! It saved our Sunday dinner. It's really hard to find a butcher that will go above and beyond like that, especially on a Sunday. The guys at this market basket know their craft and how to treat their customers; I'd never go anywhere else. read more

So I went grocery shopping this morning. About a half hour after they opened at Market Basket. Store #25. I started in the cheese and egg section. I grabbed all of my dairy products and everything looks great. I then grabbed my tabouli and hummus which I love to have on wraps. I then went to the the deli to get some American Cheese and some slice Turkey Breast. The young lady working at the deli was more than helpful. Even after 7am she was willing to help with everything. Her name was"Amy", who is a kind person in my eyes. She started off my experience to be great. So I then went on to finish the rest of my grocery list. Still all produce, etc, was good. But when I got to the register they asked me if I wanted plastic bags or boxes. I told the cashier that I would take bags. She asked why, but still said ok to please me as a customer. I told her that when I went shopping here a few days ago, I asked for boxes (to be green) but there were cockroaches in the boxes when I was putting my groceries away at my home. So I asked to speak to the manager in private because I didn't want him/her to think I was looking for anything in return. I told him my situation, I believe his name was Chris, but not sure. He asked me what brand boxes they were and he apologized 5 times. I told him it's ok but I wouldn't offer boxes to customers without inspection. All in all I love Market Basket, but I don't need cockroaches in my home. Just my experience and figured I would share. read more

I love shopping at all Market Basket stores.Im just bummed that they discontinued the OUR BEST veal cutlets. There were 4 in a small tray and orange in color.4 generations of our family have enjoyed them. Market Basket manager told me he gets requests for them all the time but they are discontinued. Ok, cons - the plaistow store the aisles are to small, it's too crowded and it's outdated. HOWEVER, this is the place to go. there is no where you can shop around that you will find the prices this place offers. So the trade off is the above and I'd rather save $$ than have a nicer aesthetic experience. The managers are great and LISTEN to the patrons. Even the young kids at check out are great. I have to give them a big high five too because they have made SUCH efforts to bring in organic foods, and gluten free foods (none of which I buy) but the fact I can find it there if I want it is great. I've seen this change in the past 3 years. Last year I asked for pear juice which they didn't have and would you believe two weeks later it was on the shelf? someone ordered it and they started to carry it. They are unbelievable! If you hate the crowds, shop early. they are open VERY early or go late. Otherwise you'll have to deal but to save roughly $75 per shopping experience is well worth it. Keep up the good work MB - I do hope you update and expand this store, but even if you don't, I will continue to shop there. read more

Market Basket which is where I shopped for over 45 years is going downhill fast. The prices of everything are sky high lately with very few sale items. I started shopping at Shaw's in Plaistow last year and I absolutely love the store. Their prices amaze me and most of their items in the meat and seafood department are way lower than Market Basket and better quality and taste. The store is so clean and well organized. Their produce is wonderful and lasts a long time as compared to Market Basket. I think Market Basket/DeMoulas needs to train their managers to smile. I've yet to see a friendly one in any of the stores. I am a price watcher and they have gone higher and higher on their prices. I noticed yesterday that Shaw's has so many more customers lately than Market Basket and I can well understand why. If you join their rewards program many times you get super excellent buys and also money off your total grocery bill. I used to think Shaw's was wicked expensive but it is not anymore. I really miss the Market Basket of yesterday. Unfortunately, I am retired and need to get the best deal for my money so bye bye Market Basket! read more

All 3 stars for pricing. The location is a pain to get in and out of. The cleanliness can make you gag. There are some smells coming from the deli area at times that do not belong out of an outhouse. So I have never bought anything from the deli but the grocery prices are the best in the area by far. I understand WAL-MART is planning a new super store nearby. That should help clean things up considerably.With the Web site Yelp still responding to allegations by San Francisco businesses that it manipulates the prominence of positive and negative reviews, some Chicago merchants are adding to the heat. I've been going to MB my whole life in Haverhil an nh but not till recently I've noticed how cookie cutter plaistow MB is. Its very crowded an the people who shop there are rude I'm sorry to say. Last thanksgiving I was followed around . I've never stolen in my life but as I was trying to shop there he was in his red coat pretending to do something. I ended up leaving ,but before I left I looked for someone to complain to an realized all the cashiers are white bubble cute types n I'm sure management was behind it all. I'm definitely not prejudice,please don't get wrong idea an I really never cared about stores with an one type of nationality working in it but they seemed to care of my color, come on its Market Basket I've never returned to that store an I've told all who listen. This place is a sh*t show ALL OF THE TIME. Pardon my lovely French to start off the review :) I would rather pay an extra buck and go down the street (Shaws) then deal with a TON of patrons congregating at every turn, every aisle, everywhere! It is ridiculously bothersome when you know what you want and try to get in and get out. That will not happen here. By the time I'm done shopping I'm irritated/stressed out....just for groceries? I don't think so. I will never go to that particular location again. And talk about the small aisles, which does not help when attempting to maneuver around people. I can't get everything I need there because they just don't seem to have the same offerings other stores have, so why even go based on that reason as well. The new Market Basket that opened up in Epping is phenomenal though! New, big, clean, larger aisles, nice staffing, not crowded, MANY items available, fresh seafood, freshly prepared sushi/made to order, no wait to check out, I could go on and on. I would rather drive a little further to go to that location and it's a pleasant stress free trip to the grocery store. read more

Was at the store today to purchase some yogurt on sale.10 for $5,00. I was watching a young lady earlier stocking the shelves but she left, so I picked up a case of 12 that she hadn't put on the shelve yet I thought it might safe her since I wanted all 12. but when I got to the register It rang up wrong $6.99. I was in the 12 or under line and it was very busy. When I questioned the price the young lady didn't understand. It was wrong so she had to call a supervisor over. The other customer behind me were angry and murmuring leaving me very embarrassed. The supervisor had to check the prize and agreed the price was wrong but that I couldn't purchase the box since it wasn't open. I could by 12 but not in the box. I explained the young lady was stocking the shelve and left so I wanted 12 so I grabbed the box. She said they needed to be on the shelf first for me to purchase them. I stepped aside and my son went and got 12 more yogurts and we had to wait again to purchase these out of the box but the same yogurt. This store is ridiculous. Even the supervisor didn't understand why we had to take them out to buy them on sale. I have never felt so humiliated, I will never return to such a insensitive store.
