I have been to this place a hundred times but this visit felt so awkwardly different. I thought re-visiting would be a great time but other than having a decent conversation with the bartender, the food did not meet the Standard that I grew up with. So many of you know that I have been on the hunt for old New England style "celery" egg rolls. Well, a friend gave me a heads up, that Oriental Garden in Haverhill has them. Away I went to investigate the claim, and sure enough, they do indeed have the long lost celery egg rolls. What is a celery egg roll, you ask? Well its a regular egg roll made with ground celery intead of cabbage. It also has pork, a bit of carrot as well. I stopped in for lunch on a weekday and choose from the lunch menu. #1 Egg roll w/ pork egg fu yong, and Pork fried rice. Perfect smaller portion. The celery egg roll was fresh, hot and crispy on the outside. Egg foo youg was also fresh and had ample pork and bean sprouts and brown gravy. RIce was ok. Service was friendly and pleasant. I was in the neighborhood late one weekday afternoon and decided to give it a try even though reviews have been mixed at best. The common thing among them was that the ownership had changed recently and that it ~may~ have improved. One teriyaki photo at least showed some promise, so why not? OG Appetizer Combo #2: Combined samples of four appetizers, with no rice. - Beef Teriyaki: Two sticks of grayish meat. Slightly thick, slightly coated, slightly tender, but dry after a few bites. Not much flavor. A little below average. - Spareribs:  Two ribs had top surfaces with a light but faded red paint and a few tiny bubbles that whispered "reheat," while the cross sections had even more grayish color and screamed reheat. More tender than I would have expected-- it pulled cleanly off the bone-- but not much flavor. Well below average. - Egg Roll: Uncrisp shell, mix of cabbage and celery, with pork fairly strong. It looks like more cabbage than celery, but tasted and felt more like an old scholl celery egg roll. Sawdusty dry, but decent flavor from the pork and seasonings. Average. - Fried Shrimp: A pair of thin, stretched-out shrimp (probably halved) with MUCH more batter than shrimp. More of a deficit than I've come to expect. Could barely feel or taste it. Had one. Didn't even want the other for my leftovers box. Below average. Pork Fried Rice (full order): I went back and forth with my elderly server on which rice to choose to get something fresh, and he recommended ordering PFR but adding bean sprouts, which normally don't come with it. Miraculously, he was right. Pork nuggets a little long in the tooth, but the rice itself was soft, fresh, moist, and tasty. A little salty though, and not soy saltiness. But overall, above average to well above average (for nowadays). I get that those apps might be better if I ventured in later at night, but this is a one-and-done for me until convinced otherwise via photographic evidence. I think New Moon Garden has more upside, and Hawaiian Isle, even with its inconsistency, would be the clear cut choice for the area. read more

It is called "Funny Vibes Comedy Club" and Ms. Laddy runs a very professional setup and brings in hilarious comedians. They do official shows and a weekly open mic on Thursday as well. I went to the Oriental garden for a late night bite to eat and some drinks on a Saturday. It was good vibes, good music and later I got my food and it was really delicious. They have the best Chinese food in Haverhill and at the end of the night I had forgotten my phone there and the owner stayed a little later and gave me my phone. The owner was really friendly and kind so if you're considering Chinese food in a good time, you should go to Oriental gardens they have different events going on such as comedy and karaoke and other things so I rate it five stars. read more

We've ordered food from here before and have always loved it. Today If I could give this place 0 stars I would solely because of the hostess at the door. We ordered online through their website. Got charged, got an email confirmation that the order had been placed. My husband goes to pick it up and the person at the hostess station tells him he doesn't have our order, my husband calls me so I send him the email confirmation and the charge. Again he tells him he doesn't have the order and that "he doesn't have time to talk to them" my husband's about to lose it so he walks out. I call and speak to the guy and he said the same thing to me so I asked me speak with the owner. The owner apologizes but simply says they've been having issues and that jimmy is a knuckle head. Takes my number and name and tells him he will make sure I get my refund. Meanwhile my husband goes back in and asks for the owner who gives him our cash refund and tells Jimmy now we've lost a customer. Great that the owner was able to rectify the situation right then and there but definitely won't be back because of one miserable employee who should never work in customer service a day in his life. read more

I ordered chicken fingers. You know when the food is fresh. It was overcooked or left over from yesterday and refried today. The rice was clumpy and stuck together in a ball. I am a regular at oriental garden so I have seen more than my fair share of stuff. One thing that sticks out is ownership is clueless about the aspect of customer service. Two out of three weeks on Saturday night the second bartender has called in for their shift. Same person. I have been in the customer service industry for 30 years and this would be unacceptable in any other business. My question is what is being done to solve this problem. Is this person been reprimanded or warned or anything. Instead of for lack of a better term,sticking it to the employees that show up and are loyal this ownership show get rid of the dead weight and start treating his employees better. 5 stars to the bartender on duty who puts up with this and 1 star to the owner read more

I ordered the Luncheon Special #1 Egg Roll, Egg Foo Yong, Pork Fried Rice ($6.50 plus tax) and I chilled out in the lounge for about 10 minutes while waiting for my order. The food I ordered was actually fairly decent tasting and just average, a good amount of food in a square styrofoam takeout box. The egg foo yong was firm with mix of onions & roast pork in a deep fried egg mixture, covered in a thick brown gravy. The fried rice (brown color) had a soft texture with a mix of onions and roast pork pieces. The egg roll was nice and crispy on the outside, filled with a mix of cabbage & minced pork. DO NOT GET FOOD FROM HERE! They are super rude and not customer oriented at all. We were on a business visit to Andover. And we wanted to try Chinese food. The website did not specify that no rice came with any of the entrees. The person who took the order & money also did not specify. So once we got to the hotel and called the person on the phone was super rude and argued. Despite us telling them that if they didn't specify how would we have known. He hung up on us when we called and dared us to call whoever we wanted to. SO we were stuck with the food with no rice and no means of making it. To say the least this was the most unprofessional way to deal with customers. Service in food was terrible I am $85 bill that I put on a credit card with $20 cash for a tip. The waiter called me cheap said I did not leave with tip he did not work on the table it was still there. Then he proceed to tell me that wasn't enough. So yes I did get pissed took back my tip and started to walk out the door he blocked me from leaving said it was cheap again in front of all my friends I was horrified and so where they. I am surprised that this place is still in business. Although it has been a Haverhill staple for decades, perhaps it is time to close its doors. Located in a strip mall, it feels like walking into a time capsule. I don't know how they cook the egg rolls, but they are the chewiest things. The boneless spare ribs are 75% fat. The peking ravioli's were stone cold upon arrival. I wish that I could recommend this place, but I just can't. The mai tai, at least, was good. read more

This restaurant is near our home in Haverhill and I am wondering why it is still open because of the ongoing nastiness of the Chinese person who answers the telephone. He is unreasonable and does not speak good English and is hurting this business terribly. Although you say you will pay way more to make a change on a combination plate or dinner item this person refuses. We found three Chinese restaurants just a half mile away in Plaistow, NH that are inexpensive and and willing to compromise if you want to upgrade and incur an additional price to get the items you like that are on the menu. He will not substitute any appetizer for another appetizer although you say you will gladly pay the difference in price. My boyfriend & I decided we were in the mood fir some Friday night Chinese take out, it was about 8:30 & he lives very close to the plaza OG's is in, so we decided to give it a try. We ordered white rice, steamed broccoli, spring rolls, soup & chicken fried rice. The broccoli, soup & spring rolls were tasty, though these are hard to mess up. The chicken fried rice was no good, it was dark brown in color, had pieces of onion & almost no chicken at all, no flavor, just blah, like it was just doused in MSG, so my boyfriend accurately put it. Hungry? Want food? Stay away. Just don't come here. The food here is probably the worst attempt at Chinese food I've eaten. I didn't have high hopes for the food and I was still disappointed and grossed out. We had beef and broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, and their Lo Mein special. The beef was cut into large pieces, the broccoli was under cooked, and the sauce was only soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and corn starch. The chicken also was cut into large chicken finger pieces, the pineapple wasn't cooked, they added maraschino cherries (??), and the sauce had no flavor. It came with fried rice which was old rice doused in soy sauce. The Lo Mein was the only thing that was close to not disgusting. It again was overcooked with soy sauce, the meats were underwhelming, and the water chestnuts were cold. Holy cow, has this place gone downhill. Not that it was very far up the hill to start with, but it has grown exceptionally worse. I visited OG's this past Friday night with some friends and had probably one of the worst restaurant experiences ever. First off, our waitress was something else. If you combine the personality traits of rude, arrogant, disrespectful, and just all out brain damaged, you arrive get the equivalent of the type of staff they employ, specifically our waitress. After ordering our food, and receiving the wrong order, we kindly informed our waitress of this, to which her only response was to repeat back what she wrote down and not offer to correct anything. Let me drop some customer service 101 on this girl, as I'm 99% certain that the 'Customer is always right'. I don't even care if you fail to admit your fault or think that we're wrong, but at least offer to rectify the issue at hand. - Strike 1 Throughout the course of dinner, our waitress was beyond intrusive. I was sharing a Pu-Pu platter for two, not even done eating mind you, and our waitress is busy clearing plates and moves a plate filled with discarded chicken wing bones onto my platter. Hello, can't you see I'm eating here? There's still food on my platter for crying out loud. - Strike 2. In the process of her hastily clearing the table, she also removes plates of food that we weren't even done eating with. Didn't even ask us if we were done eating, just proceeded to clear at her own pleasure. After calling her out on this later, 30 minutes later after she hands us the bill, she returns with some food in a baggie saying, 'no, I was wrapping it up for you.' HAHA, yeah, sure you were and you most definitely didn't go into the kitchen and replace the food you discarded with some newly bagged items- Strike 3. Now how it even got to strike 4 and 5 below, is beyond my comprehension, because I should have just walked out before we made it there, but let me continue. Finally when the bill comes, there was an error with the bill as it included items that I did not order. Our waitress had this tendency to be breathing down your back the moment she handed you the bill, expecting to receive your credit card instantly. "Are you ready to pay the bill yet?" NO I'M NOT READY, YOU SCREWED UP THE BILL AND YOU'RE TOO INCOMPETENT TO NOTICE OR REMEDY ANY OTHER ISSUE FOR THAT MATTER. After explaining all the above to the manager, he was completely unapologetic, no empathy or anything of that nature. And still no offers for correction. I only wonder how many other tables this woman has screwed up. No idea how she maintains a job there, my only assumption is that she and the manager have something going on, what with them making googly eyes at each other all night. I wouldn't even expect a fast food joint to offer this woman employment, because she was just that awful. No intentions of coming back here, which is a shame because from what I saw Friday, a lot of people have been bailing here. The OG has indeed been around Haverhill fah-evah, and is unfortunately w/in walking distance of at least 2 low and middle income housing "developments". Our first visit was started outside their front door when we experienced a profanity laced and no doubt alcohol influenced "discussion" between Donny Sweatsock wearing his LMFAO inspired white plastic sunglasses and his lovely GF about who "it's always effing about" --all right in front of her 6-7 year old daughter ...charming. The decor is classic American Chinese..like Frannie here says. I really liked the food actually, not gourmet but darn tasty. The server was quite polite and helpful. I think there's some school of thought about Chinese restaurants that serve white bread.. Like it's a warning sign or something, but again, not really worth the calories. I had the General Gao's chicken for fun and it had a really nice subtle (amazing, subtle, can you believe it) nutty taste. Bottom line I think is to simply get take out and have your own alcohol influenced profanity laced discussions in the comfort of your own home--just wait until the kids are in bed.. read more
