Our last meal in Rome; lunch at Doney. The restaurant is connected to the Westin Hotel. It's located on the famous Via Veneto a popular gathering point. It's an upscale area where several Embassys are located, including the U.S. Embassy just a block away. The sidewalk dinning area is what attracted us to the restrauant. We started out under a tented section but then moved to an uncovered section to be able to enjoy the sun. We started with a bottle of Cab Sav from Casale Del Giglio. It had a 3.8 rating on Vivino. It had a nice nose with a smooth start and finish. Complimentary bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar was brought to the table. The bread was a mix of sour dough, whole wheat, and yeast rolls. I ordered the Tortelo di granola arso ripieno di Carbonara. In short it was Tortellini stuffed with magic in a delightful sauce. It was outstanding! It was tasty, favorable and just down right decadent. It had the wow factor. Jan ordered the Linguine del granola "Senatore Cappeli" alle vongole veraci e bottarga di tonno. In short, pepper Linguine. It to was excellent. Our Server, Christian did an excellent job. The noise was low, considering we were adjacent to a major street. The prices are high ($$$). This review is based purely on the breakfast buffet because we didn't eat here for another meal. The buffet is very good though. It really has a ton of offerings from an omelet station to both pancakes and waffles. They have fresh fruits, cheeses, and pastries as well as hot items like eggs, bacon, and more. We very much enjoyed starting our day with the breakfast buffet and we never left hungry. The staff are super friendly and quick to help refill missing items from the buffet or to help you with things like ordering coffee or soft drinks. read more

Nice restaurant located in the Westin Excelsior in the heart of Rome. This place has a pretty decent menu, a nice breakfast buffet and some fairly amazing outdoor seating! Yes I recommend this place. Food could use a little improvement (seasoning), but the service is excellent. I ordered the pizza and mixed green. The pizza needed a little more salt and more ripened tomato's. I would liked to had more basil on the pizza. I like my pizza that way. The tomato sauce on it was really good. The mixed green salad was really good. Overall good service, value for the food, location and service! I will come back to try other items on the menu! read more

What a beautiful location and excellent food and service. We are visiting Roma and found this restaurant as we strolled along the cobblestone roads of this ancient city. We recommend that you visit this restaurant and enjoy the beautiful wait staff and their hospitality. The bar and cafe staff allowed us to sit and watch the Paris Olympic opening ceremonies. The Doney is the hotel restaurant for The Westin Excelsior. It is actually quite nice and spacious and there is ample seating inside or on the lovely sidewalk patio, which has a Parisian styling. The menu has a variety of classic Italian dishes, everything we ordered was delicious. It is a bit pricey but the portion sizes were quite large and the drinks were strong so I consider it well worth it. The service was also very attentive and on point. Some hot afternoons after sightseeing, we just relaxed on the patio with an Aperol Spritz and Caprese Salad (see pix - that slab of Mozzarella is HUGE! ). The inside is nice as well (and well air conditioned if it's really hot out). I had intended to venture out to restaurants every night in Rome, but the top restaurants can book up weeks in advance, so if you are without reservations or just tired from sight seeing this is a great option for a great meal in beautiful space. read more

We would have 15 minutes to even have somebody at tend to us so I got up and walked inside to the bar and asked the guy for a water and a Coca-Cola and he told me I had to go outside and wait like. We went here on our first night as we stayed at the attached hotel and were starving for a meal. Lucky for us this restaurant was a fantastic way to start our vacation. The service was great and the servers even helped us with some Italian. We ordered the fried artichoke/mozzarella appetizer which was super rich and filling. The sauce it comes with was fantastic. I got the seafood pasta and there was so much fresh seafood I was very impressed. My mom ordered the lamb I believe and it came with a side of fried sea bass. I think the sea bass was a bit drier than my preference but my mom says the lamb was great. We got macarons for dessert and they were very delicious. Our table was right next to the window and faced the street so we had a great people watching view. Overall great restaurant and would recommend it even if you aren't staying at the hotel. read more

This was my birthday meal while in Rome. It was everything I'd hoped it would be. The service was outstanding and we had a very nice table that had a view of the street. We started with the baked zucchini florets stuffed with cream cheese. I had never tasted umami before, but this was the perfect description of umami. It had honeycomb and little cranberries and was sitting on a bed of smeared pesto. For entrees I had cacio e pepe and my husband had scialateilli pasta with blue and red shrimp. We both loved our dishes and were quite full at the end of the meal. They gave us macaroons after dinner. I'm not much into sweets and I was quite full. My husband enjoyed them, though. All in all it was a lovely meal and a great birthday dinner. read more

We were one of maybe four groups seated, yet it took 45 minutes to get the menu and wine list and then another 20 to take our order. 3 waiters independently made bizzare "jokes" about either being out of certain items or not willing to serve them to us in particular--each time, squirreling away to point and giggle at us--and they proved especially ironic when they were actually out of a few staple menu items. Forgot one of the things we ordered and then messed another up in the kitchen, then forgetting to ever bring it out. When they brought out two items, they were wildly undercooked and needed to be sent back, and, while we were waiting, another waiter came and gave us a bill. While some of the food was quite good, such as the squash blossoms, the rest was aggressively mediocre. I've never left a yelp review before but was really frustrated by this whole ordeal. Served with raw artichokes and cream cheese flavored with the salty bite of Pecorino cheese. I ate every last bit it was that delicious! I finished my lunch with a traditional Sicilian Cassata, a ricotta cake with subtly sweet pistachio marzipan, and a slice of chocolate cake, moist and decadent, topped with a thin chocolate square and strawberry. I knew right then that I would be back, and sure enough I was. When hunger struck in the morning, I headed to Café Doney, hoping to replicate my experience from the afternoon before. I didn't replicate, I exceeded it - if that's possible. For breakfast I chose eggs benedict with salmon. The eggs were poached to perfection. The pancakes were light and fluffy, and topped with fresh berries and a sprinkle of powdered sugar, they were delectably sweet and a great accompaniment to the savory eggs benedict. Two experiences, two meals, two different times of day. One conclusion: Amazing service, combined with a passion for quality Mediterranean cuisine makes Doney a definite place to recommend. read more

Nice appearance, cool on a hot summer day. I stopped in for a bite, and was offered a very limited menu even though it was lunchtime. I had the Caesar salad with chicken breast, it was terrible. Some tired iceberg lettuce, flavorless square croutons that looked like they came from a box, the tiniest thin slivers (think the size of a match) of chicken scattered about. Awful. read more

Situated within (and without) the Westin Excelsior (that's "Ex CHEL see or" to you if you want a cabbie to know what you're talking about, not "Ex SELL see or"), Doney serves up their hearty, internationally appealing breakfast and lunch buffets, and a la cart meals in the evening. Seriously - where else can you get a European style continental breakfast, next to an American style breakfast, next to I don't know - who eats hummus and curried veggies for breakfast? Those guys. Service is always friendly (how are the same people that are there at breakfast still there at dinner though? do they not get time off?!), and the food is good, though pricey. If it was my dime I was spending, I probably wouldn't select this place over all the others in Rome, but that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it. Great people watching as well. read more

Coffee is cheapest from the bar, beautiful dècor and moderately friendly staff. The espresso served had a gorgeous fruity lemony scent. And tasted sweet, perfume like, with no bitterness. It's syrupy in the mouth and strong like a shot of liqueur. It warms the jaw as you drink. One of the only 2 Cafés I revisited my entire time in Rome. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed a fruity sweet espresso. read more

Staying at this hotel and had a team dinner at Doneys. It's a very pretty cafe but the service was poor and food very mediocre in taste at best. Definitely not worth the cost. The wait staff messed up almost everything and it was uncomfortable to watch. You can do so much better in Rome. Bummer. read more

We were staying at the Westin Excelsior for one night before starting a cruise. After traveling all night, we ate at Doney because it was in the hotel and seemed good enough. Hotel dining can be hit or miss, so we didn't have very high expectations, but we really wanted something decent that we didn't have to travel to. Unfortunately, Doney didn't fit the bill. Our starters were baby squid and soft shell crab tempura, with zucchini escabece in sweet and sour mint dressing and beef tartare. The tempura was a heavy, over-cooked lump of fried food in a bowl. The presentation and preparation were both poor. The soft shell crab was unidentifiable because it had been cut into small pieces. This dish went almost entirely uneaten. The beef tartare was pretty good (at least it was not over-cooked). Main courses were John Dory filet and tiger prawns, and grilled yellowfin tuna and red king prawns. Both fish dishes were cooked to within an inch of their lives. The prawns on both dishes were mushy. The John Dory and tuna were both dried out and curling from being over-cooked (there was not even a hint of pink in the center of the tuna - it was cooked as if it was being prepared for a can of Bumble Bee). Both dishes went back 80% uneaten. Notwithstanding that almost 3/4 of the food we ordered was taken from our table uneaten, no one bothered to ask how our meal was (maybe they knew and didn't want an answer to the question?). We declined dessert and then waited for a check... and waited... and waited.... We asked for a check and waited some more. We asked for a check again ... and waited. We asked again and ... third time was a charm! After waiting almost 30 minutes, I finally was able to pay for my meal. On the plus side, there was a 20% discount on our meal because of being a Starwood Pass member, and we had a €84 hotel meal credit that reduced the cost of the meal to under €50. Even at that, though, I cannot say we got a great value. So we didn't like Doney. We had lunch at Hard Rock, just down the road., which was as expectedIf I had it to do again, Improbably would have gone back. read more

Very good and attentive service, pleasant outdoor seating (indoor area looked lovely as well.) I was given a complimentary amuse bouche of raw salmon and passion fruit wrapped in cucumber which was delicious! Unfortunately, the meal I was served was inedible. I ordered the seafood "salad" appetizer as an entree, which was supposed to be a steamed seafood dish. The mussels and clams were fine. But, the prawns were not cleaned, were gritty with sand and had large, visible veins that hadn't been removed. The octopus (which came in good quantity) was gooey and slimy on the outside, literally gelatinous, and strangely soft on the inside. It did not seem fresh at all. There was one piece of calimari that was similar to the octopus. The "salad" seemed to be a steamed julienne of carrots and zucchini which I actually didn't taste. I'm staying at the Westin Excelsior which houses this restaurant. The hotel is beautiful, and I assumed the restaurant would be at least adequate. Maybe a different meal or a different dish would have been better but I don't think I'll try again. I should mention that the maitre d' and the waiter were very interested in my complaint and comped my meal including the glass of wine I had already had. read more

Agree with the other reviewers about the wait but as my wife reminds me, we're in Italy where a little patience is important. I started with a pasta dish with squid and cherry tomatoes that was fantastic. ,y wife had the vegetable plate that consisted of grilled vegetables with a hunk of mozzarella and bruschetta with some marscapone like cheese. For our main courses we had spaghetti and the sea bass respectively. My wife was really please with her well executed spaghetti and I had one of the best prepared plates of sea bass I've had in my life. I'd go back but it was +100€ for two with a bottle of wine. read more
