We visited this office years ago and despite the convenience of weekend availability and some emergency services, we were underwhelmed. Today changed that! My oldest furry dude woke up not himself and appearing to be in pain on one side of his face, complete with squinty eye. After trying a couple of home treatments, it was clear he needed to be seen. Of course, it's a Saturday. I looked to see if Donner Truckee was open and thankfully they were! The hot us in under an emergency visit and honestly only had to wait about 15 minutes if that. The tech, Forrest, was absolutely wonderful and very knowledgeable. The on call Veterinarian looked familiar and we figured out she has covered our regular vet a few times. I'm irritated I forgot her name but she was also thorough, sweet to my senior buddy, and identified the problem (an infected tooth). We were able to leave for under $300 which for an emergency visit that I didn't have to drive to Reno for was just FINE for me. The front receptionist was very sweet and helpful. Honestly I'd rate 4.5 stars for this one time visit and a DRASTIC improvement from the last few times we've utilized this office. Only downside was I need to go back and get the rest of the Rx because they were short the dosage. Not the end of the world nor a huge deal but kinda odd. Definitely recommend if you are in need of Saturday care and want to avoid the trip to Reno. We have our established vet but if she ever closes for some reason (I hope not) I would definitely consider Donner Truckee. read more

Super friendly staff. Anytime I've taken my dog in there. They've been really helpful. Dr. India has always been great to my pup. All the techs are super knowledgeable as well and super understanding. The only time I've ever had a negative interaction was once I brought in my dog for a anal gland, expression, and everything went smoothly, but I know that there was a brief consultation fee that was added onto it, and when I asked about it, the receptionist just ignored me. And when I kept poking at it, she finally told me that it's always been there and I'd let her know that I've never been charged that before, but if it was something new, I didn't really mind. But again never answered my question or anything, it just seemed kind of silly to spend $112 in five minutes. read more

We love the vets at Donner-Truckee vet! Our pets see Dr. Anderele and Dr. Vanini. Dr. Anderele is so gentle and sweet with my puppy, Daisy. She and her staff go out of their way to make her feel more comfortable during her ~scary~ vaccination appointments. One time, I brought her in for her shots right after she had been peed on by her cousin. They gave her a quick dry shampoo bath and got her all cleaned up while she was back getting her shots. Our elderly cat, Muffin, has been seeing them for some still-to-be-diagnosed issues with his appetite. They have been very gentle and understanding of my partner's anxiety around bringing him in and helping him understand all of the procedures that Muffin has been going through. Dr. Vanini has also been pretty open about pricing and have given us options when available (ie sending bloodwork out vs completing in-house). Most importantly, this vet ACTUALLY HAS APPOINTMENTS. I can't tell you how many vets we called to try to get Daisy in for her shots before ending up here. Some were booked months out! Also, they allow you to go back in the exam room with your pets, which some vets have discontinued due to COVID. read more

Wow. This team is amazing. We had to bring our dog (@go.augustus.go) in for an eye issue from hiking in the Tahoe Donner train tunnels (be careful with the pets, it's dirty in there). They were busy but suggested that we bring him in for an emergency visit and it would be a wait but they would see him. We got him in there right away. EVERY. SINGLE. PERSON we interacted with there was amazing. You can tell they really love what they do. They got Gus in within 5 minutes, explained what they were going to do, ran their tests, gave us medication and carefully explained what had happened and how to treat it. The whole time with great empathy. We were out of there in 20 minutes. Gus is fine, just an eye infection. We even had to call back to ask a question about the diagnosis (we forgot to ask if he was contagious). They took our call immediately and got an answer while we were on the phone. This has taken us quite some time to write. Go to UC Davis if you need emergency service; if we did, we would very likely still have our puppy. If you are needing emergency Vets; DO NOT GO HERE. We explained our concerns and it was no problem, come on in, we can help. The ONE VET, (not a HOSPITAL at ALL; One Vet, not a Team. Lies) was doing well doggie visits, and we were told that our doggies breathing would receive IMMEDIATE ATTENTION, Hence Why We Chose and Animal HOSPITAL. We should have went to UC Davis. They care, and are not out for bucks. Our doggie died, quite unexpectedly, WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF BEING IN HIS CARE, after being FULL of vigor on our way to her visit to check everything out. Our doggie was not injured. She was killed at the clinic. Obviously. I filmed her on two legs enjoying the window on the way. So, please. What is possibly worse, while sobbing, and IN SHOCK for our unexpected and UNDESERVED loss (looking at suing you, so you know), the ONLY vet, smooth as silk and chock a block with well doggie visits. We could hear him talking so nicely to his well doggie visit families, while we could just hug our poor dead doggie. Thanks. For crushing our family. If anything could possibly have gone worse than losing our baby, somehow, the ONE VET, decided unilaterally, AND WITHOUT OUR CONSENT, purportedly conducted X-rays after our doggie passed, (killled0) and then purportedly consulted a RADIOLOGIST, (all within 10 minutes!) not only reviewed our now dead doggie's films, without our consent. There WAS NO OTHER VET as well on the property, or specialist in sight, as confirmed by the surly receptionist, so, highly unlikely. The vet flashed some heart x-ray (whose?) off his phone, all within 15 minutes, and of losing our baby doggie. He flashed it briefly, and shockingly did not give us a copy. This is Not over. Hello 1,800 for killing our baby dog. We hope you suffer too. This ONLY VET, WHILE ADVERTISED AS A HOSPITAL. His surly receptionist came out with a Laminated Pictograph of what Urn we wanted for our beloved doggie. Pressure. Upsell. "oh, just the pine box then??" Prices as you might imagine. Pine box??? Well, thank you for killing our baby. THIS WAS WITHIN A HALF HOUR OF ARRIVING AND KILLING OUR DOGGIE. Sorry, we thought we were taking our baby home... Are you kidding me? You killed our dog, ramped up our charges without our consent, and very ikely did not have a "radiologist" review her "films" within 20 minutes. We don't believe it. We couldn't get such turnaround service at the Mayo Clinic. And, recall, we heard you with all you well doggie visits. Yes, you are charming. And you killed our doggie. You heartlessly tried to upsell us to a "better urn". You told us "here are her films, which were not authorized after you killed our doggie. Are you shameless? You shattered our lives, and you should have told your "intake" that we should go elsewhere, while you stick with your well baby dog visits. Shame on you, man. You devastated our family, and you could have directed us elsewhere, if your really cared for animals and people. You suck. Also, I had a chance to witness your "outdoor boarding space", what a joke. I wanted to update my earlier review of Dr. Vannini. In addition to the IBD type issues, Fritz had a huge lump growing on his right side. Because his overall health and so deteriorated prior to our fortuitous discovery of Dr. Vannini, we had not been able to do anything for that lump. Yes, I did consult several vets. One said it was "nothing," another was obsessed that it was a mast cell tumor (even though it showed no histamine activity). One vet wanted to do extensive tests that would have cost thousands of dollars, been traumatic for Fritz, and unhelpful. One vet "faked us out" by saying he would remove it, then refusing to do so because of the weight loss. And at every turn, my stated boundaries were not respected by any of them. They would blurt out prognoses that turned out to be wrong and other information that I'd specifically asked them not to tell me. Seriously, veterinary medicine in this country needs a lot of reform. Then we found Dr. Vannini. Each time we went back, I was more impressed by her intuitive ability to offer exactly what was needed. Above all else, she didn't try to pressure me into tests I didn't want. Well, Fritz had made some progress on weight gain by June with her regimen B vitamins and low dose prednisolone. But he was still so thin that I wasn't sure about surgery. Over the summer though, the lump got infected. It turned out to be a cyst and not any of the things the other vet had terrified me about it being. That said, over the summer, the lump got very infected. When I got back to Tahoe, I immediately booked the surgery with Dr. Vannini because she was the only vet who had earned our trust, and because we didn't have a choice anymore. This lump that had plagued us for almost three years, Dr. Vannini removed in less than two hours! I was scared about the anesthesia but she respected my wishes to do sedation. And no unnecessary tests. The pricing was fair and I was not forced to get biopsies or anything else I didn't want. Fritz recovered from the surgery without any infection. He's still not 100%. I'm just happy that he's doing soooo much better than a year ago, when he was down to 6.5 pounds and puking all night long. If we had not found Dr. Vannini, I'm not sure he'd still be here. I lost my other cat very tragically and unnecessarily because we couldn't find a good vet soon enough. I'm confident Dr. Vannini would have saved that cat's life too and my one regret is not finding her sooner. Thanks Dr. Vannini! also thanks to the always patient front desk staff and the techs. I would imagine their job is often thankless. Please know that all of you have made a huge difference for Fritz and me. read more

We were quoted almost $100 for two hours of dog day care. Absolutely gouging and ridiculous. Something bad has happened with dog day care and boarding, that being the money has become far more important than the fact that a dog owner is trying to do the best for their dog. This has been lost now. It's almost like they can't beat you up enough, charge you high enough, add on enough "add-ons" the result being there are so many rules, it is so expensive, you can't provide the best for your dog anymore. Is it contempt for their own customers? We are the enemy now? Because it sure as hll feels like this now. You are losing the forest for the trees. I'm pretty upset with the service here and communication. On Monday we brought my dog in to have a small lump looked at. The vet swapped the area and sent off the sample for testing, she informed me it would be 2-3 days. Today is Friday and I still had not heard anything so I called around 3:30pm and got a very vague receptionist. The receptionist informed me the results were there but she couldn't disclose the information. I then had to ask if she could get someone who could talk to me to call me, she said she'd do that. Fast forward over an hour later and I know they're about to close... I get the same receptionist and she tells me the vet techs can't call and it has to be the doctor, who is now out of the building. Literally zero communication from the receptionist or the office, god knows how long the results have been there for. Now I am worried and have to wait until tomorrow morning when I will HOPEFULLY? received a call from the veterinarian. In addition to this bad interaction, I was originally charged $130 for my visit with my dog. About an hour after leaving I was informed I paid someone else's vet bill and actually owed $550. $550 for a quick exam and shotty lab results that I still don't have the results of. I am furious. I guess I'll be driving to Reno for vet care moving forward. read more

I took my puppy here because it's very close to where we live although I was advised against it. I made a total of 4 appointments for Zeus (my puppy) First appointment went well, great! I immediately book the next one for 4 weeks out since he needs the puppy vaccines Second appointment, DISASTER! we were not seen for maybe 30-45mins after our appointment time. Not until I called a second time to see what was going on did the office said they were a little behind. When it came time to pay, they almost charged me for the wrong vaccines until I asked! 1st red flag Third appointment was quick, however, their credit card machine was down so they were going to charge my card later. I got charged without knowing what I was charged for. 2nd red flag Fourth appointment and the reason for this review Zeus has been limping after long walks for a while now. I decided to bite the bullet and schedule an appointment with the Vet knowing my bank account was going to regret it later lol (jk, he has pet insurance) Long story short, the appointment was booked last Tuesday for today 10/03 at 2:30pm. The Vet's office is not too far so I decided to walk there so the vet could see what I was referring to We get there (15mins) early, and I call to check him in. Vet office: the Vet is in surgery so it will be a bit plus you are early Me: okay, Im 15 mins early, we can wait At 2:30 - appointment time Vet office calls me and says "the vet wants to know if you are okay with leaving Zeus and coming back to get him" Me: Sure, but someone will have to walk him before the vet is ready to see him so the vet sees the limping Vet office: we can walk him outback no problem. A tech will be right out to get him Tech comes out "The vet said the surgery is going to take all day and he won't be able to see Zeus today" The reason I'm pissed is because of the lack of communication! This is also NOT the first time that we've had to wait longer than usual with this vet because of other appointments conflicts The tech that came out was also very rude! I had every right to be upset! I didn't book Zeus appointment last minute, they knew he was coming, they could've called to reschedule. Also she made it seem like the reason he was going to be seen was less important than the surgery the vet was doing. I still don't know if Zeus has something wrong with his hips Another person from the office called after to apologize and give an explanation but I was already livid and told her I didn't want to be rude so I hung up. read more

My dog had a laceration on the top of his head. We had no other option than the DTVH since it was Xmas Eve. Dr. M was kind but he insisted that our very healthy, calm, small dog be sedated. This seems completely nuts to me and more for the hospital than for the dog: the wound wasn't even bleeding and anyone could have held the dog down, including me. Five stitches, 2 hours and almost $1300 (!!!!!!!!!) later, we left feeling burned. Is it because we don't live in town? I paid less for a root canal! Further: once my child (age 4) needed the same number of stitches. HE wasn't sedated for it. All went fine. My pediatrician relative is sending me a suture kit in case my dog ever needs stitches again. No matter what you say you cannot convince me that a muzzle, local anesthesia and containment wasn't a better course of action than putting my senior dog under. read more

I normally don't like to give bad reviews but I had such a bad experience at Donner Truckee vet hospital recently that I felt I should share. A few weeks ago, I took my dog there because she had a skin lesion on her face. The vet examined her and gave her antibiotics. The next day, one of my friends (who is not a vet) told me it looks like Ringworm (which is not bacterial.) I looked it up and realized what she had looked exactly like images on google for Ringworm. I called the vet hospital and told them that. I pointed out that if it's a ringworm, antibiotics is not going to help since it's fungal. Moreover, I read it can be transmitted to humans, so I needed to figure out if it is ringworm sooner than later. They said the vet said she's confident it's not a Ringworm and asked me to keep giving her antibiotics. After giving her antibiotics a few more days and not seeing any changes, I called again and talked to another vet who suggested I try applying anti-fungal cream to see if that helps. As I did that, the lesion immediately started to get better within one day and was mostly healed within a few days. I don't know how this vet hospital is still in business but I won't certainly take my dog there again. They charged me $240 for making a wrong diagnosis for an obvious issue, gave wrong medication to my dog and even kept insisting on their wrong diagnosis. read more

I'm usually not one to post reviews but I felt the need to warn other pet owners of my experience there this morning (4/23/2024). We have used this vet for over 5 years while living in Truckee and have seen a few doctors come and go throughout our time there. They are expensive but we've learned to accept that in exchange for the convenience of not driving to Reno. We were scheduled to drop off our dog for an all day procedure today however when I arrived to drop off my dog and helped walk her back to the back room I overheard two female vets or techs yelling and screaming at each other in a completely unprofessional way behind the closed doors. I could clearly hear them fighting and they were yelling back and forth about administering some sort of expired medication. I left with a sinking feeling in my gut not feeling ok about leaving my dog with a vet or technician who would choose to have a child like argument rather than a professional conversation with each other. It was also clear from what I overheard that they had made a mistake that may have harmed another animal. This argument was occurring at 8 am right after they opened, so you can only imagine how the rest of the day would go if the employees can't even get along and are screaming at each other in the back room first thing in the morning. I went out to my car for a few minutes and ultimately decided that I did not feel comfortable leaving my dog with them and went back in to take her home with me. We will be switching to another vet due to their lack of professionalism and clear issues between staff. The ladies at the front desk were absolutely wonderful and empathetic about the situation and my decision to cancel the appointment. For the prices you are charging your customers should be able to expect the highest level of service and screaming at each other like children in the back room where customers can overhear the conversation is completely unacceptable. Learn how to talk to each other like adults or take a walk if you are feeling so upset you feel the need to scream at each other, that is not the experience you want your customers to have when they walk in the door and expect to trust you with their pet. I will be filing a complaint with the California Veterinary Board and hope that the owner of the dog who was administered an expired medication also does the same and I will not be returning ever again after this experience as they have completely lost our trust. read more

Our family was in Tahoe for a week vacation when our Husky mix Rocko tore most of his dew claw while swimming in the lake but a part was left hanging. They were amazing when we had an emergency and got us in same day with a reasonable emergency fee. I liked them so much that I got our other dog established there too. Dr. H and Dr. Vanini are trustworthy, smart and really care. I like that they are not alarmist. They are very practical and have you and your pet's (and your wallet's) best interest at heart. I had always avoided them because I thought, because of their location, they would be more expensive but the prices were comparable to others in town. They also talk really highly of other vets in town and have good relationships with them and I really appreciated that. read more

I live in Truckee and just recently got a kitten. He's 8 mo. old. now and was throwing up. I got referred to this vet from my regular vet because they were booked. They took complete advantage of the situation and squeezed every dollar out of me. It started with an X-ray (in my opinion not necessary). I asked the vet how much she said $250 (it was closer to $300 with the vet tech asst. fee added on that she didn't mention). After the vet found out my cat was constipated she proceeded to give him sub q fluids (not necessary because she told me he wasn't dehydrated), an anti nausea medicine (doubt this is necessary for constipation) and a laxative (this was necessary. Needless to say the bill came to $450 for constipation!!!!! I was mortified and in shock when I left. I can't imagine how much the bill would be if my cat was sick or injured. I will never go here again nor recommend them to anyone. read more

We found Donner Truckee Veterinary Hospital in the midst of an emergency and they provided our dog fast and amazing care, while calming the frantic human (me!) Our English Setter Garwood, has severe allergies. We didn't realize it, but he got stung by a bee in the face and within minutes his entire face tripled in size. His eyes were swollen shut, his snout puffed out 3 inches. It happened so fast we were freaking out that his breathing was going to be compromised. The vet we had gone to before had left for the weekend. in the midst of googling we found Donner Truckee Veterinary Hospital. I called them as we drove, gave them the details and once we got there, they immediately got Garwood right in. A few shots of steroids and Benedryl, followed by a cookie, had Garwood on the road to recovey. Dr. Stuart was fantastic, as was the rest of the staff. The next day Dr. Stuart went out of her way to follow up on our boy, which we really appreciated. In regards to the other comments about this place being expensive, I have to say I thought they were right in line with other vets we have been to in Monterey and Chico. Not overly expensive at all. Actually, very fair prices. Donner Truckee Veterinary Hospital saved the day and we are forever grateful! read more

We were referred to another pet lodge in the Truckee area, but after they didn't call us back - I called Donner Truckee Veterinary and was pleasantly surprised by how kind, warm and responsive the staff was. Our corgis Ruby and Franklin were staying overnight for NYE and we found their lodgings to be fantastic - 8x4 run with cots and blankets for when it got cold. Franklin is a slightly mischievous dog and had eaten some strange tinsel and plastic that day causing him to vomit and not be able to keep food down well. The vets assured us they would make sure to keep an eye on him. If there was any real emergency they would call us immediately. All in all when we got them back they looked happily radiant and ready to play in the snow. For vacationers who want great care of their dogs knowing there is a vet nearby to take care of anything serious, I would highly recommend their services! read more

We are so pleased with the care our dogs have received here. Generally we see this vet for emergencies or urgent care while we're staying in the Sierra. We drive over from Sierra City. They've made a point of creating good communication and done follow-up calls. Professional and caring. I like the local art displayed in their office. Oct 2009: I saw them putting in a new purpose-built facility closer to the road. The work being done on their new office looked like they are serious about growing and maintaining a business and creating a state-of-the-art facility.
