I love this place. We eat here whenever we need a quick BBQ fix! Love the smell!

This is on my way home, so I have been here a lot, just because it is convenient. I think the brisket is very good, especially if you get it early. If it sits under that heatlamp too long, it can get dry. Some of their sides are really good, too. I like the cole slaw, which isn't too mayonaisy, the mac and cheese and the green beans. read more

The biggest issue that I have here is that the BBQ is no as consistent as it should be. I've had brisket here that is melt in your mouth tender but the stuff I had Tuesday was flavorful but not particularly tender. The jalapeno sausage is good. I also tried a beef rib on Tuesday; I like them better elsewhere. read more

Meat bland. Sauce bland. Friendliness factor? Meh. Refills on fountain drinks cost $, so lousy place to take kids. McDonalds would have been cheaper & tasted better, and I hate McDonalds. Styrofoam everything, so a big environmental disaster, too. read more

Excellent food. The way barbecue should be. Sauce served in the side, not so much vinegar that it overtakes the flavor of meat. The bread was separated / pre bagged individually. The potato salad was as good as my mom's. ... which is a hard thing to match. Decent BBQ. Sauce is good and thin as I prefer, not thick and overpowering like (insert chain name here). Brisket as some have said is very moist but there's not a strong smoke flavor in their meats, you will be reaching for the sauce. I generally prefer bbq prepared such that it needs no sauce but the sauce here is light enough that it works. Sausage can be a bit dry at times but that's because it's very lean. Sides are good, not over-seasoned. read more

It might not be the best BBQ in town but they sure do have everything i could possibly want to order and all at a reasonable price! Cant get much better than that I'd say if you ask me! What We like is the food is always served to you hot and when you ask for the lean Brisket they take off all the fat and always tender. I am a native Texan and have eaten QUITE a bit of BBQ in my life. We love Donn's because it's right here in the neighborhood, the staff is always wonderful, we've had Donn's cater things for parties at schools and at home and it's always perfect. The brisket is always the litmus test for me at any BBQ joint. Donn's is lean and tasty. SOOOO much better than Green Mesquite, Bill Miller's and other chains around town where the brisket is fatty and flabby. I recommend it wholeheartedly! read more

Donn's is pretty good - definitely the best BBQ in the area between mopac and driftwood that I know about. That jalapeno sausage is great, just the right amount of spice. Totally addicting. I've been getting extra to have with eggs the next morning, which is probably the second best way to have it. I've had the brisket a couple of times and it's been inconsistent, sometimes a little too fatty for my taste, sometimes just right. In their defense though i didn't order lean or moist, so i suppose if i had requested something in particular i might feel different. The ribs here are solid, not the greatest, but not bad at all. The turkey here is not really worth it, it's basically just deli turkey that's been in the smoker a while. The prices here are great to boot - last time i was there i believe i got a pound of brisket, 1/2 pound turkey, 1/2 pound sausage and a side or two for less than 20 bucks. I wish they were open on Sunday - Donn's would make a great end of the week meal. read more

I tried Donn's Texas BBQ on 5-26-11. Lots of firefighters from the area come in during lunch hour, so plan accordingly. I have the jalapeno sausage wrap and a sweet tea. Paid about 5 bucks or so for everything . The wrap (which is really just a link of sausage in a piece of regular bread) is served with a small container of bbq sauce. The wrap is very good, and I dipped it in the bbq sauce which was very yummy. The jalapeno sausage does not have a strong kick of hot or anything, but it taste good. I also had some pickles and onions on the side and dipped them in the bbq as well. The tea was spot on. All in all, a good place to eat some bbq. My only complaint is that the serving portion is rather small, but at 2.50 the wrap is a good value for a quick bite. read more

I crave pork ribs and have visited countless rib joints in Texas and elsewhere in the quest to find the best. This is what I want: -consistent quality from one visit to another. -the leanest meatiest ribs possible - not a plate of blubber. -tasty sauce -fresh, crispy slaw not doused in sugar -fresh potato salad not mush -no hype, no bullshit, fair prices I reckon I have been going to Donn's for at least 15 years. It is the best I have found, all things considered. I think in all those years I have had one plate that was not up to par. I have not ordered their other items like chicken, brisket, sausage. I find that Texans know BBQ but they do not know meat -- all the briskets at all the joints look and taste too dry and tough. Chicken should be cooked thoroughly and rarely is. Kreuz gets my sausage business, as they are the only ones that please my palate (I was a greasy sausage hater before Kreuz) But do not let that discourage you from trying the Donn fare. I am simply generalizing from too much bad experience with these items at too many other places. Last but not least is good hygiene. All too many rib joints (and other restaurants) in Texas have filthy stinky rest rooms. Donn's have always been clean -- a big plus, as it is some indication that maybe their kitchen is also sanitary. Its at the Y in Oak Hill. read more

A great, small town style BBQ place. The jalepeno sausage was awesome and so were the pork ribs. Two of us ate for about $20 - a pound of meat (the sausage and ribs), two large sides (fried okra and cole slaw), six pieces of white bread, two drinks, a small banana pudding, and of course the fixins like raw onion and pickled jalepenos. The BBQ sauce was good and a bit spicy. I ate a ton and left happy. read more

Since I wasn't able to go to the pool and BBQ, I called ahead of time for a pickup at Donn's, good thing I did because the line was at the door when I walked in. I'm sure I got a lot of evil eyes, but I went straight to the counter and asked for my pickup, talk about Evil eyes, sorry peeps, but, that's why you order ahead. I ordered brisket, turkey, sausage, chicken, potato salad, corn and cherry cobbler. Let me start off by saying the food always taste great, especially the turkey, so much flavor and melts in your mouth. i was slightly disappointed with the brisket, which was a little on the dry side, and this is one of my favs. After I finished chowing downing with the main courses, now comes the cobbler. So glad I had vanilla ice cream to go along with the cobbler, this was so good! Oh, I do think that they're a little pricey, but oh well, I don't eat here all the time, food was great though, at least I didn't have to do any cooking! Thx Donn's!!! read more

The meat is consistently good. The service is great (they work hard, fast and friendly). And the prices are very reasonable. That makes for a great regular restaurant. If you want a great one time experience, this may not be it. If you want a place to eat weekly and enjoy every time - bet on this one. I have every eat and they were all good. It's good and the service is excellent. Always very friendly. Portions are not generous. I got an order to go, and the sides were put in tiny containers that were really more for sauce then for sides. I never saw such a small food container used before. The containers held a few tablespoons of food, but if you dine in, they give you about twice as much on the plate. Also, the beef ribs hardly had any meat on them so I paid $18 for basically beef bones with a little bit of meat to gnaw on and a few tablespoons of beans. The other food choices are generally a better value, like the chicken and sausage. However, for the price, Austin has some better places. This is just the only good barbecue in Oak Hill. read more

My family wakes up early, even on weekends. Most taco places don't open until 8 o'clock on the weekends. Don's is the exception. They open up at 5:30 AM during the week and, I believe, 6 AM on the weekends. Their breakfast tacos are legit! They have carne guisada, migas, and picadillo that are as good as most places in town, in my opinion. I haven't eaten their barbecue in many years because I was never too fond of it. Now that I have tasted how good their breakfast tacos are, I'm tempted to try the barbecue again. If you need a taco in this neighborhood early in the morning, you cannot do any better! read more

I was really disappointed with our trip to Donn's TX BBQ. It received fairly high ratings from this site so we decided to give it a try, but we found the brisket to be very fatty, the ribs dry, and the side dishes unremarkable. The fountain drinks were even off. The jalapeno sausage was good though. read more

I went to the Oak Hill restaurant and ordered a lean brisket sandwich, mashed potatoes with white gravy and fried okara to go. Paid almost $11 for it. When I got home I discovered the only thing they got right was the fried okara. The brisket had more fat than meat and the mashed potatoes had brown gravy. Obviously they don't pay attention to what your say when you order. Won't be going there again. read more

I have been going to this location of Donn's for many years to get awesome BBQ in south Austin(Oak Hill). I used to go to the Donn's on MLK to have their breakfast but now the Oak Hill location has breakfast and I find myself trying really hard to not eat there more than once a week. I really like their BQQ but I LOVE their breakfast. I have been a big Jim's fan for over 20 years and they used to be my breakfast spot but now I only want Donn's. Jim's is still a good place and an Oak Hill institution but ever since Donn's started serving breakfast, I see no reason to go anywhere else. The staff at Donn's are friendly and attentive to everyone's needs and they answer all questions or requests that you have. They're honest and good people and they make you feel like family. I always put a couple of dollars in the tip jar because I appreciate the quality, service and entire experience every time I go. I strongly recommend getting a Brisket/egg/cheese taco(they charge a little extra for the cheese but they PILE it on and it;s more than worth it) and a Waffle. That has become one of my favorite comfort meals. You can go spend more, wait in long lines or go to hip downtown joints but if you want good BBQ and a great overall experience; go to Donn's. read more
