Donte's Boxing Gym was one of the best things i've ever done in my life.I highly recommend it.Now I used to be a student there but unfortunately i let fear consume me, stopping me when i could of kept going.The Whole time i went to this gym i felt inspired as if i was going to keep going and Donte would be there to lead me on.Me quitting this amazing sport stays with me to this day, I left because what someone did what they were supposed to do in the sport? Everything i do now that i feel like im about to quit i just remember all of the motivation that i received from Donte to keep pushing. I have big regrets from quitting..it wasn't my best choice.Sometimes i want to go back to redeem myself on what i left off on. I'd been itching to join a boxing gym for quite some time but had huge reservations about joining a chain like LA Boxing. I worried that the classes might be too large (therefore, not as much attention) or worse, that I'd get locked into a membership that I'd never be able to get out of. I'd heard nightmares from friends about trying to cancel memberships at places like that. So after several co-workers had recommended Donte's Boxing Gym, I decided to check it out. I dropped in on a class ($30) to see if it was actually what I was looking for. The class was a moderate size and we did a range of activities - including cardio, mitt work, heavy bag, etc. To sum it up, it was exactly what I was looking for- plus you get to pay month to month for your membership and aren't signing any 6-month or 12-month contracts. Oh and that $30 I paid for the individual class went toward the cost of my first month's membership (which includes classes and open gym days). I'll admit I was quite nervous at how painfully obvious it was that I was one of the less experienced boxers in the gym. But everyone - Donte and even the more advanced boxers/members couldn't have been more welcoming and friendly. No one is looking down on you because you're not as good. Instead, they are encouraging and pushing you to become better. When I joined, I was mostly joining for the fitness aspect of boxing (and the glorious stress relief of hitting a heavy bag) and not so much the fighting. I had no intention of ever getting in the ring and sparring. But on my own inclination and with no pressure from anyone, I decided to get in and spar. Three minutes in the ring felt like having run a 10K! It was this crazy rush of adrenaline and I can't even remember what it felt like getting hit. Hah. I'm glad I did it... (and I'm sure I'll do it again). I had just been taking the regular classes for about 3 months but felt that I needed to step it up. And everyone was right- after you go in the ring, it really changes how you work it in the regular class. Donte / Donte's Boxing Gym was everything my co-workers said it would be. It's a gym filled with other hard working individuals who motivate the hell outta you to do more than you ever thought you could. And Donte is a great instructor. He will teach you to box the right way and make sure you have a little fun too. I highly recommend. Oh and the last added bonus: your friends/co-workers will think you're a badass that you box/spar and will think twice about swiping your (fill__in__the__blank) from the fridge ever again. read more

Decided to take my son to one of the youth free sessions to see how he would like trying out boxing. He enjoyed his time there and will be back probably during the summer once his schedule cools down. The trainer incorporated various exercises along with teaching stance and technique. I would have like to see other children there besides the one child that appeared younger but definitely more advance than my son with boxing. The kids had some time in the ring, did some bag punches and shadow boxing. When I arrived, I had to purchase $10+tax handwraps for my son, I paid $11 cash and didn't receive my change or a receipt but whatever, that may not bother some but me being an Accountant, I took notice but let it ride. All in all, the experience for both my son and I were ok. read more

If you are looking for an authentic boxing experience, Donte's Boxing Gym is the place to go. I registered for the Women's Boxing Bootcamp in January and immediately signed up to continue in February. Not only do you get a great workout in, but you also learn how to execute proper boxing technique. Within the first few weeks of class we had the opportunity to spar in the ring. It really gives you the chance to apply what you learn during class. Merissa teaches the Women's Camp and is an excellent instructor and extremely positive. She also does a great job with fostering relationships between the people in the class. Whether you are experienced or not, this is the gym to go to. read more

Although I've done some martial arts in the past, I was brand new to boxing and was looking for a gym to join. I was torn between some of the local options, but after being at this gym for 3 months now, I have to say this gym is truly one of a kind. Here are the big points I think you should know: #1. There is no yearly contract. You pay month to month which is a big change from other boxing gyms in the area that try to get you to lock in to 12 month contracts when you're not even sure how long you want to really commit to it. #2. Donte ensures that the environment is friendly and comfortable for everyone. There are a number of women who regularly attend classes, which goes to show that the kind of people that Donte lets join the gym are not unsavory or unpleasant people. So every time you come for a class, it feels a lot more like a small family or a group of friends getting together than a simple transaction between instructors and the students. #3. Finally, while you might be getting one hell of a workout with every class, Donte and his instructors are also just as focused at teaching you actual boxing techniques that you can actually use in the ring (if you should choose to ever spar). This is different from what I've seen in other boxing gyms where their goal is the workout as opposed to growing the students as they workout. So to me, this makes it even more worthwhile. Been going for two years and it's by far the best place for boxing in MoCo. Other places will have instructors yell the same combination numbers for you to hit the bag while doing the same repetitive exercises. At Donte's, every class feels like a new class with new exercises, different types of bag work, and conditioning drills. Classes have a diverse range of skill sets from beginners to intermediate and it fits with what you want to get out of it whether it's getting in shape, self defense, or learning how to box. Merissa is always so encouraging and provides tips and tidbits to help you be and feel successful in your efforts to better your whole self. she is always helping to improve ones form and posture to protect one's body and be a better boxer. Took my two kids to the introductory "Confidence Class" so they could get a taste for boxing and bought them wraps which was required. I explained how my kids were shy and needed some encouragement as they were not the most outgoing, athletic types. Long story short, he threw both kids out of class within five minutes. The first one was kicked out because he couldn't do push-ups (teacher didn't help or explain) and the second because he couldn't figure out how to do the warm up. The kids never got their hands wrapped either. For a "confidence class" the teacher didn't provide any support, instruction, or encouragement. He told me "this is a drama free class" which I now understand to mean he didn't want to help out kids looking for help. He only wanted kids who knew about boxing and were easy. --- Your response says it all. So this is a comment to your over-inflated, ego ridden, self-righteous retort. I told you my kids were shy and needed encouragement. They didn't need the leader of Cobra Kai, who thinks a shy kid is "challenging their authority," to kick them out of class within three minutes. They wanted to learn boxing. They were excited but intimidated. The "confidence" aspect of your class never came and our first interaction in front of my children was to insult and demean them because they didn't live up to your mythical standards of perfection and desire. They needed a coach and proper training and encouragement. Not someone who was a bully and willing to give up on a child immediately. You had your mind made up and then found preposterous reasons to feel insulted and justified. You kicked them out so your job would be easier. You aren't a coach. You comment on two shy kids "needing to put their ego aside" when in reality, you're the grown man and teacher, your ego is in full display and you took it out lazily on children. You should be ashamed of yourself. read more

This is an update to my review as Donte has youth classes too. Both my 7 year old son and 4 year old daughter go to the youth boxing classes. Donte is a gem with kids. He understands them and the interaction is amazing. We took my son to Title Boxing and he came out crying and was so disinterested. With Donte, its all about teamwork, and working hard. He also is a great mentor. He used to be a DC public school teacher so he gets it. I have never seen my son work so hard with dedication and commitment, skills that are hard to pick up on. When you walk into a place of business you usually expect to be welcomed. They usually thank you for coming and do not grill you as to why you would dare step foot into their place of business as if you do not belong. Well this is the exact feeling I felt walking into Dante's gym. This man went out of his way to make me and my son feel unwanted and uncomfortable in his gym. From the moment we walked in he questioned us as to why my son wanted to be there. I guess he didn't like my sons answer. As my son had to think about why he was there. Obviously to learn boxing but my son is on the spectrum so he took the question as a trick question. Dante didn't like this and pretty much told my son then why are you here then if you can't answer me pretty much made it seem like he had no time for a "wanna be" boxer. As if I didn't pay for my son to attend that class. As if he doesn't have 1 time classes for sale on his website. As if he promotes to only people who want to be boxers when they grow up..idk it felt very condescending. His attitude was demeaning and passive aggressive, we must of caught him on a bad day because the class over all was good. However he laughed at my son for a move he was showing him. How unprofessional and mean can you be. If you do not have patience for kids who are learning, then make your class for non-beginners only. I thought this was a class, right? What do we do in class? We learn. I was referred to this gym by one if his own students but if he wasn't so rude to me he would have learned that, he also would have learned that 2 members of my family are boxers and that my son was going there to make them proud because he wanted to learn like them. But this man was too focused on why we were there, instead of making us feel welcomed and having an interest in my son wanting to learn at his gym . My son has ADHD, severe anxiety and is on the spectrum but aside from all that my son wanted to be there. Do you know how much mental power it takes for a kid with these kinds of issues to show up to a boxing gym and actually want to learn and try something new !! I didn't force my son to be there, he genuinely wanted to be in that class. Thank god my son did a really good job in the class and didn't realize what was going on. I made my son complete the class to show the instructor my son could do it. Aside from that I was willing to ignore the rudeness I encountered coming in and wanted to talk to the instructor about taking more classes also to inform him of my sons low self esteem and ADHD and how this class would really help him out but he literally looked at me and my son and was like "yea when I ask you why you are here you have to say to learn boxing, I don't have time for ..." I didn't catch the end because I was so mad, I still ignored his rudeness he then stopping talking to us to say bye to other kids he looked at us and said 'ok you guys can leave now" . Not do you have any questions? Did you enjoy the class? Just ok you can leave now. I was was stupidly waiting to talk to him about signing up my son. I should have walked out from the start. I have never left a place feeling so sad. He literally told me in no words that he didn't want to teach my son or had time for him, and that broke my heart for my son. read more

I joined Donte's Boxing Gym a year ago, after a few friends suggested I look into boxing as a way to build up my struggling confidence and learn some self-defense. I had no idea what I was doing or what I should look for in a gym, but I chose DBG because of the solid yelp reviews and because they were offering a beginners camp that month. I felt slightly less anxious about trying it out knowing that I'd be with other anxious beginners who had never boxed or heard of handwraps before. When I drove to the gym for the first class I was so intimidated and nervous. I felt like I was way too out of shape to even try boxing right now, and should wait to try it until I got a little more fit. I can't express enough how glad I am that I ignored all of that, because I fell in love with it the first class, and I've been going to the gym for classes and personal training 6 days a week since. The owner, Donte, is incredibly knowledgeable and experienced in boxing, and has done an amazing job bringing in trainers that also have an intense passion for the sport. Most of the other popular boxing gyms in the DMV are strictly fitness oriented, so you learn what the punches are and hit the heavy bag, but you don't actually learn boxing- putting together combos with proper form so you don't get hurt, defense, sparring, how to analyze your opponent, and conditioning aimed to get you in fighting shape. I didn't want a boxercise class- I wanted to really learn how to box, and I wanted something to work at that would challenge me. This is what Donte and his trainers do best. There are people of all skill levels in the gym, and people with all types of goals and mindsets. Some come to classes because they just want a great workout. And that's fine! And you will get that. Others want to learn the ins and outs of the sport, and you'll often see them sparring outside of classes and working on fundamentals. Just know that regardless of why you decide to come to the gym, you'll be supported and encouraged to be your best and meet whatever your personal goals are. The gym has such positive energy, and the people there are extremely supportive and friendly- from the staff to the other members. Classes are well-structured, fast-paced, and you're never sitting around waiting for instruction. If you're a beginner and jump into adult classes, the trainer will take the time to talk to you beforehand, make sure you feel comfortable, show you how to wrap your hands, and demonstrate proper punching techniques. The trainers all have their own styles when it comes to teaching classes, but you get an amazing workout with all of them. They offer class packages, so you can buy as many or as few as you want. If you're not sure you're going to like it, just buy a few classes and see. You won't be on the hook for a monthly membership, and if you decide it's not really your thing, then at least you got a great workout out of it and can say you tried something new. Oftentimes reviews don't mention precisely what it is we want and need to hear about a potential business as it concerns us as parents and or as another 3rd party involvement. I am going to review DBG as a new parent as well as a former trainee and athlete at the gym under Donte's tutelage. Here is my review on DBG including the 'tangible, intangibles' that matter so much to us as parents and consumers: Donte Brown, the sole proprietor and creator of DBG is a model citizen, a mentor, an educator, an inspiration, and one heck of a trainer, coach, and athlete. To preface this correctly, I need to provide a quick background about how I found Donte, how his school benefited me, and why I have a life-long friendship with Donte. In 2008, as a former professional soccer player, avid athlete, and graduate student, I found Donte Brown in Rockville, MD. Little did I know Donte would become my ace, my friend, my educator; my rock. What you never see in reviews are things like I am about to mention. Fact: Donte never curses. Seems silly, but we all curse and he has the discipline and the wherewithal to know this is a concern of parents and if Donte is going to run a gym and a business that predominantly incorporates kids and moms as his target demographic, then one needs attention to such details. Donte plays hip-hop throughout the day. I love it, and I also love country music. Donte ONLY plays the clean versions of all songs. What many people also don't understand about the 'sweet science' is that boxing is a rhythmic martial art. Footwork is imperative not just as a fighter but even when fitness is your goal. What you will never hear from Donte personally is how he was one of two people that graduated with a scholarship from college. The remainder of the candidates either dropped out, went to prison, became pregnant. Donte grew up tough, had a tough life, and to this day has not allowed it to leave him jaded. Furthermore, Donte leads a monastic lifestyle. He dedicates his life to being a better person, to eating better, to not involve himself in anything that doesn't improve him. He is a voracious reader and learner, never satisfied. You would never know that he taught DC youth in Washington's public school system. That challenge alone speaks volumes so imagine the character that acts as a catalyst to such adversity. Donte started training me firstly as a savior case, to get me back into shape and lose weight. After a year, I had my first 'smoker' as a Thai Boxer. I won. Confidence grew as my relationship with Donte did. What most people don't realize is that the relationship between coach and pupil is sacred. Its not just a baby-sitting job to Donte. It's a commitment and a two way street. And if you can show just a fraction of the same gusto and passion to improving oneself in life (much less boxing), you will get 100 fold in return. Donte is perhaps the most honest, straight forward, and dedicated people I have ever had the priveledge to work with. I went on to win 3 gold medals in grappling world championships in my division, I never lost a smoker or boxing formal competition. I feel wonderfully about those feats however, nothing compares to the inspiration, the direction, and the friendship I was able to develop over the years with Donte. Donte saved money, self-professed in business and real estate, and launched his own gym. He continues to inspire men, women, and children. There is not ONE person I have networked with at the gym that has felt or said differently. I live in CA now and cannot describe how much I miss this environment, his training physically, and more importantly, how much of a better human being he helped me to become. Explore the DGB gym for your goals to lose weight, gain confidence, self-defense. But more importantly, know that you will find one of the most loyal and frankly, skilled boxers and coaches I have encountered in the sport. I went on to train and compete at famous MMA schools and compete all over the country and I cannot help to keep coming back to reflect on how special and impactful Donte and the gym/family culture he has created. Donte is a diamond in the rough, a total gem. For such a small investment, your life could be changed in a multitude of ways. You won't be wasting your time or money. Try it out as soon as you possibly can and I promise, it will not disappoint. I only have a short space in which to write about DBG but if I could add more to my review, I could tell countless stories that exhibit his loyalty, honesty, quality as a coach and the product he is offering. I was really interested in joining a boxing gym, but I was not excited about LA Boxing. I was looking for something more authentic. I was more eager to do the training than actually jumping in the ring. I stumbled across Donte's Boxing Gym and once I walked in and met Donte I knew this was the gym I'd been looking for. Donte was really down to earth and mentioned that he himself teaches a lot of the classes. I joined on the spot and started training. Being a beginner I was always curious if the more experienced boxers would "look down on you" or tease you for being a beginner. It was the opposite, people encourage you to keep training and consistently give you pointers. My son said he wanted to learn boxing so I took him to Donte's Boxing for a free class. My 10 year old son had a hard time keeping up with the exercises and Dante was not very pleasant to my son because of it. My son lost some self esteem after the class. This place is a hidden gem, I explored other options in the area but I'm sticking to Donte's gym because of the instructors. They take care of you regardless of your level, you get a good workout every time you go, and they teach you the fundamentals of boxing. I really like that part the most, that its not just a fitness class, its a real boxing gym. Instead of just giving you movements to do, they really want you to get the "why" behind the movements. You can also see the instructors spar if you go at the right time, which is always cool to watch. Donte's is awesome, period. This was the first boxing gym I had ever been to. When I first walked in the door I had zero boxing knowledge, bad overall fitness, couldn't even jump rope, but I never once felt discouraged when I was there. The instructors and your fellow classmates are awesome, overall the environment is very motivating. The gym usually isn't that busy outside of class time and the people there are there to work, so it's easy to stay focused on your training.. Classes are dynamic but usually consist of bodyweight exercises, heavy bag, lots of focus mitt work with partners, and jumping rope. Sometimes you do a circuit workout with different stations set up which is a lot of fun. It's a great workout and I really felt like I gained something each time I went to the gym. I really miss this place a lot, the boxing gym in my new town is totally different, much more LA boxing-style cardio with very little technique emphasis.. If you want to learn how to BOX and get in shape in the process in a great atmosphere, go to Donte's. read more

I used to watch a lot of boxing when I was little. Seeing a boxing gym close by to my apartment gave me more motivation to try. Donte has to be the only best instructor I ever had when it comes to boxing. Haha He was able to teach me technique and most importantly the mental game. I mean for $95/month, I had everything I needed as an added stress reliever for work. The atmosphere is very ideal when it comes to gyms. This is the first boxing gym I've joined. Prior to joining I had a couple of concerns myself: the price and injury potential. Let me explain why these are no longer concerns. First, the price is comparitively high but this is not a typical gym where you workout on your own or take group exercising classes every so often; the potential to undermine your workout is not nearly as great as it is in a standard gym. The workout routines in Donte's are challenging - not overwhelming - and effective. Additionally, the staff that trains you is of high quality in terms of both challenging you and teaching you proper boxing form. Thus, the price is worth it - you get everything you pay for. Leading me to my second point - the potential for injury is minimal. Donte's gym is guided by a highly qualified staff that is most interested in safety and consistently instills a non-aggressive atmosphere. The culture at Donte's gym is to work hard, work together, learn a lot, and make quality relationships. In general, I feel apart of a motivated group of diverse people in terms of age, gender, religion, culture and nationality. ive worked out at a few boxing gyms, and DBG is the real deal. there, its about more than just moving around to burn calories... you actually learn boxing technique and get to use the bags, focus mitts, ect. not to mention, the conditioning gets your body in top shape. id also take advantage of the one-on-one training offered, as nothing beats having a customized work out, and someone to push you. most of all its FUN so you dont even realize your working out, but the results will speak for itself read more
