I grew up in Amarillo and have always loved The Donut Stop. Anytime I come to town, I have to stop in for a Cherry Glazed Donut. My family loves the chocolate! I went through the drive through but this location looks like a cute diner! I heard the cherry glazed and maple glazed are great. I also love blueberry cake donuts and apparently they are known for this! My husband has been coming here since high school and highly recommends! Service was great! Everyone was so kind! I enjoy good donuts but sadly these are average at best. To be perfectly honest they tasted of being day old donuts. Not soft at all hard and stale like. I ordered a buttermilk cake and maple crunch. They make crunch flavor saved this from being a 2* experience. Additionally, I read several comments stating the staff is rude. Fabulous and friendly! According to the employee who welcomed me and gave me a descriptive tour of all the fresh donuts in the rack, this location is the original. Just off route 40 at Bell, it was a convenient way to cure my curiosity after passing two other locations with big tall signs on our way thru town. I asked if Donut Stop was everywhere in the area and he replied that's it's everywhere in Amarillo with 7 locations. (This employee might be the owner as well) So after I knew the selections, I asked what was popular. Apparently the cherry donuts are seriously cherry flavored so people who are into that get their cherry fix there. That's not me though. Lemon filled, cinnamon glazed, cinnamon frosted, Apple fritters looked great if that's your thing too. And if you aren't in the mood for sweet there's a breakfast sandwich and sausage kolache (pronounced KOH-LOTCHEE) which is a sausage wrapped in a bread dough. After this thorough analysis of all the possibilities I chose a cinnamon glazed. It was warm and fluffy - so soft maybe with a little more egg than the usual donut and probably a finer flour than standard. The glaze tastes fresh like it might have a touch of lemon. I grabbed a cup of the coffee they keep in glass carafes on the burner old-school style - which was surprisingly smooth and a little nutty. Gas station just across the street and right next to on/ off ramps for route 40 made this a perfect stop for a quick morning bite. I left satisfied. The covid compliance was comfortable. And there was plenty of covid compliant seating if you aren't in a rush. Seems like a historical gem not to be missed. Established in 1974 I hope this place sees many years in its future! read more

I had the rental car and others didn't so I got to be chauffer. My oldest wanted to find a Starbucks but none of us knew where one was. We were told this place had good coffee so we stopped here instead. There was a counter where you bought the donuts and another counter where you could order coffee and sandwiches. I wasn't hungry but those who got coffee and donuts said they were really good. We got ours to go but there were lots of tables to sit at--probably all full during their rush hours in the mornings I bet. I would have liked to go back there again but ran out of time. Amongst my favorite food groups is a chocolate frosted cake donut! Unfortunately, in my neck of the woods this is not a popular donut and typically so dry full immersion in chocolate does not rescue the dryness. The donut stop blows them all away. I just LOVE the Donut Stop!! This is Amarillo's local favorite for donuts. If you're visiting or new to Amarillo you must give it a try!! I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the blueberry cake is the donut known to fame here! I promise you won't be disappointed. I always get a bluberry cake, cherry, glazed, or donut holes! Oh and don't forget their coffee. It's not the fancy shmancy stuff, it's the good home town diner coffee, just the way I like it! If all of these things haven't won you over, then the prices will!! Maybe we came on a bad day - father's day 2016 - but I was so disappointed!! The building looked amazing and the parking lot was full but when you entered the atmosphere was lost. There was no greeting, no music, and the only decor was printed off posters. The service was sub par when you made it to the counter - again no greetings or smile; just a what do you want? This really was a memorable place! Delicious donuts! We bought half a dozen fresh. I mean *FRESH*! You can watch them make the donuts through the glass windows into the kitchen. The cherry and chocolate iced donuts were scrumptuous! My mom opted for glazed, which she said were great! Kevin chose the maple iced, his favorite, and he loved 'em! We all ordered coffees as well. I can't say enough good reviews about this place. The staff is always friendly, the donuts are still the best I have ever had in my life. I miss this place and go everytime I am back home visiting. I do not like that it is only in Amarillo (and should come out West to give these craptastic donut places a run for their money), but it is truly one of the best places to go for a donut.
