When our garage door stopped working, we needed a repair fast. Door Dorks sent a tech out to us that same day which was great. Adam was very thorough. He walked us through the cause of the problem with the opener and inspected every other part of the system - the door, track, wheels, hinges and the springs. He even tightened several very loose hinges before we had decided to accept their proposal. Nice! He explained the feature comparison of the replacement options. We selected a Liftmaster system based on a couple of key points: first, it comes with a solid belt drive track, not a multi-piece track like those sold at the home improvement stores. Multi-piece tracks have more stress points that can make them more vulnerable in the long run. Second, it had the best warranty coverage with five years on the motor and lifetime on the other components. Third, it integrated an app (MyQ) and a remote keypad, both of which have already proved useful. Adam installed most of the system that same day, only needing a second visit because the particular opener we selected had been installed at the previous customer, so he had to return to the office. I scoured the internet for Garage Door Tune Up companies and found MANY. I turned to Yelp/Google/Nextdoor.com reviews and developed a short list of highly rated companies. Before contacting each company, I checked to confirm they held a CA contractor's license in good standing, BBB, and reviewed their websites. After contacting each company, I decided to go with Door Dorks. We could not be happier with our choice and would highly recommend them for garage door maintenance and/or repair. We can't speak to their installation services, but I am betting, they are equally good. Our reasons for recommending Door Dorks are as follows: 1) Communication, Communication, Communication!! - I first contacted Door Dorks on 8/27 after their scheduled close time. I reached their after-hours answering service. I informed the service that it was not an urgent matter and would contact the company the next day during business hours. About 30 minutes later, I received a call from Gina. She stated that she had seen my number come up on the company's caller ID and wanted to know how she could help. I told her that I was planning to call the next day as it was after hours. She told me there was no need, that she was still at the office and would be happy to help me. Wow! She spent the next 20 minutes answering my questions regarding service, pricing, etc. I told her that I had a few more companies to speak with and would contact her in a day or so if we decided to go with Door Dorks. Needless to say, I was impressed with her initiative and taking the time after hours to speak with me. Once we made the decision to use Door Dorks, the exceptional communication continued. Once the appointment was booked, we received both an e-mail and text confirmation. The night before the service, we received another reminder. The morning of the service, we received another reminder with the name/picture of our technician. The technician contacted us by phone/text about 30 minutes prior to arrival to let us know that he was on his way. We received detailed reports regarding our service, complete with photos, as well as an invoice and a customer satisfaction document with detailed warranty information. The technician clearly explained the service, what he found and recommendations for repairs/enhancements, but did not push or upsell any services. Following service, we also received a request to rate the service technician. Lastly, we received an e-mail from the company with an incentive to recommend other clients, if we were happy with the service received. Pretty impressive! 2) Price: Door Dorks had a promotion for a tune up which reduced their standard tune up price about $30. They were also featuring a 10% Yelp discount for any additional parts/service, if needed. We found the tune up price comparable or less than other companies. 3) Service Technician: Matt was our service technician. He texted about 30 minutes prior to arrival to let us know he was on his way and arrived on time. He was pleasant, polite and highly knowledgeable. He clearly explained the tune up process and answered all of my questions clearly and concisely. At the end of the service, he showed me everything that he had done and recommended (3) potential repairs/replacements and explained the rationale for his recommendations. He also showed me the exact pricing of the repairs/replacements but did not hard sell. He explained that (2) of the (3) recommendations were not critical, but he would recommend doing them at some point to extend the life of the door. The third recommendation was for the weather seal replacement at the bottom of the door which was clearly sun damaged/dried out, not sealing well and portions of it were missing allowing both potential weather and small animal intrusion. We agreed to have this replaced and it was done beautifully. At the end of the service call, he confirmed that all work that we had wanted had been performed to our satisfaction. He provided all documentation and invoice via e-mail. The space was left as clean or cleaner than it was when he arrived. 4) Warranty/Follow Up: Following service, I put the garage door down. When the door reached the ground, it bounced back up. I hit the button again and the door went down and closed. I chalked this up to the new weather strip at the bottom being thicker than the previous one. It happened the following day as well, so I contacted Door Dorks to let them know, just in the event that it continued. I spoke with Jason who informed me that the system probably just needed a minor adjustment based on the new weather strip and he would send a technician out in 1.5 days on Saturday. On Saturday, Matthew arrived and was equally as pleasant, polite and knowledgeable as the original technician, Matt. Our old garage door motor from 1998 completely stopped working, and I soon found out it was also far too heavy for me to open manually. My friend recommended door dorks to me and they were able to come check it out the next day and identify that not only was the motor broken but it had the wrong springs which was making it hard to open manually. Terrible experience. Over 400 reviews at 4.9 star average so it's a no brainer, right? Wrong. Called at 10am on a Saturday, explained I wanted a replaced garage opener ASAP. They said someone would be out between 3-5 same day. I asked how they could replace it same day, and the response was that their technicians have different units on the truck to install. Ballpark, $600. Great! Come on out, we'll move our plans. 3:00. 4;00, 4:30, I call. "He's finishing up another job and should be calling you soon." 5:00. 5:10 he calls to tell me he can come at 6:00, and I know to replace a unit he's going to be there at least an hour, which is too late for us. Not the end of the world. Reschedule for 1:00-3:00 next day. Guy shows up, tells us that because our door is so large and heavy, it's going to be ~$1100, they don't carry those on the truck, and that'll be $60 for coming out anyway. (Or starts doing an inspection I didn't ask for, and that's what the $60 is for). Tells my 120lb wife to try opening the 1000lb garage door to prove how bad our springs are, when a simple "your springs are bad" would suffice. The worst part, besides two days of ruined plans and delays where others could have been fixing it, and being charged for a service fee I was not initially made aware of, was the feeling of being stuck. The same feeling when you're at the mechanic, your car is up on the jacks, and they tell you its going to cost WAY more than you initially expected and also here is a list of other things they found during the inspection so would you like them to get started? Our garage door spring broke on Christmas Day, so we couldn't even manually open it. Called Door Dorks the next morning. They'd installed our door/opener for the previous owner. They didn't have an appointment until the next day but put me on a list in case a technician finished another job early. Alfonso ended up becoming available that afternoon. He came on time, inspected everything, gave me three different options, then completed the work as agreed and left everything cleaner than it was when he arrived. My garage door was getting a little hinky, so I contacted Door Dorks to see about aligning the tracks and whatever else might be needed to keep it reliable. One of the things I will not do is play with the spring on garage doors; they can be lethal when they break loose. Nathan came out on schedule and did a survey of the mechanism and gave me several quotes based on the options I selected. I chose to have him install a second spring for a two-car garage, which makes the door easier to open and puts less strain on the motor. Some of the original plastic rollers were showing cracks, so Nathan replaced all of them with nylon rollers. The two-piece linkage bar was replaced by a stronger single bar.
