*DO NOT USE EVER* My girlfriend and I recently relocated to San Francisco, after having lived in Washington DC for over half a decade. We packed light but didn't want to hire a moving company to haul it cross country and with the price of gas driving it ourselves was out of the question. We'd seen these style storage units before and thought it might be a good idea. It wasn't. The day before they came to pick up the unit, it got broken into and robbed. It was half a block away from a police station too. Thanks DCPD. We were told by gentleman picking it up that we were covered through insurance, so we relaxed and started the claims process. They took there time in getting back to us and informed us that it wasn't covered because it wasn't in their possession. We looked through our paperwork and it never said anything of the sort. Now they won't return our calls or emails. To top it off, we get it in SF and start unloading it, but the dresser is destroyed, stuff is scuffed, and the unit's door is not closing. Needless to say, these things are WAY TOO easy to break into. They are boldly colored and easy targets. DON'T GET ONE - especially if you live in a city. read more

I was so impressed with Door to Door. This was my first time moving stuff across the country (I went from DC to Texas) and it went really well. First of all, let me speak to the service. I was impressed with every step of the process, from the woman who originally helped me sign up, to the men who delivered and picked up my box in DC and then in Texas, and the customer service reps I spoke to on the phone any time I had a question. Every single person I spoke to was nice, courteous, and didn't mind answering my thousands of questions. The guy who delivered the box was prompt and did a great job showing me how everything worked. During my entire process, everything went exactly as planned. Frankly, I had prepared myself for worst case scenario, but nothing ever went wrong. The box held together just fine. It also survived torrential downpour--everything inside the box stayed perfectly dry. The box was clean and sturdy. The wooden sides do shift a little bit, but it was well within a reasonable range. I never felt like the box was going to pop open or anything and it held together just fine, all the way to Texas. Now, I'm a meticulous packer: I bubble wrap everything breakable, I am extremely conscious of how I stack items, and above all, I make sure nothing has any space to shift or move, even if it means filling gaps in the crate with empty boxes. That being said, when everything arrived, it was in exactly the condition and placement I had packed it in. Nothing moved around, and I haven't found any broken items. My TV also arrived in perfect working condition. The only criticism I have of Door to Door is about the tie-down loops on the inside of the crate. There are two metal loops that you can use to tie-down your furniture. Problem is, they are only located on one side of the box. I really would have loved it if you could have put two more loops on the opposite side of the box. Based on the way I had my things arranged inside, I wasn't able to use either of the loops, and that meant I had to get creative. It worked out just fine in the end, but additional loops would have made it easier. Thanks for the great move, Door to Door! read more

My wife and I sold our home this summer and used this service to pack a portion of our belongings into their containers so that the house could be staged and uncluttered. Below is an account of our experience with this horrible company. After talking with my salesman, Skip, at the beginning of everything, I explained that we were preparing our house to put on the market and that we did not yet know where we were moving. His response was that that was no problem. Everything with the first phase of our transaction - delivery & storage of the pods - went well. When it came time to schedule delivery to our new home - 25 min from our old home - I was told that it was outside the delivery area and that there was no fee that would facilitate delivery to that address. In the Services Agreement it states the following: "Delivery Area/Distance from Warehouse Facility: Door to Door's delivery areas vary by market, and may be limited by the local geography or topography of a given market. Door to Door's standard delivery area typically includes the delivery zip codes within 25 miles of the market's warehouse facility. Additional Fees and Charges may apply for deliveries that extend beyond Door to Door's standard delivery areas." This to me, meant that areas outside the standard delivery areas would require "additional fees and charges". The language is very misleading. In the end we had a few options. Pay to have the pods delivered back to our old address prior to moving and unload all 3 into our home and then pay our movers and additional $600 to include those items in our move. Pay a moving company the quoted $1700 to go to the storage facility and get our stuff and deliver to the new address. The other option, which we ended up doing since it cost us the least, was rent a moving truck ourselves, go to the storage facility and get our stuff and move it to our new house ourselves. When I told the salesmen that we did not yet know where we were moving he didn't attempt to clarify the terms. He simply said no problem. I feel the company misrepresented its services, purposely using ambiguous language in order to get as much money out of their customers as possible. Selling a house and going through a move are stressful and expensive endeavors. Thanks to door to door, a lot more stress was added to the situation. We chose to rent a truck and get our belongings ourselves to avoid giving the company any more money than necessary. During this mess the customer service rep that I dealt with true seemed to try to help me. For that, I am grateful. But she was unable to get any results. Not only will I NOT recommend this company, but I will warn people away from them. I've already warned every real estate agent I encountered during the sale of our home. read more

I have to admit - I was pretty paranoid about moving my stuff across the country in these crates. I mentally said goodbye to everything I put in there just to prepare myself. But I was really impressed with this service as my husband and I were moving from the Bay Area to the DC Area. PROs: - Was able to negotiate a lower price with them (I was planning on using a competitor, and they were able to make me a better offer) - Delivery/Pick-up were all on time - Crate was undamaged during travel (we didn't have a SINGLE broken item. Wow.) - Really convenient storage (we stored our stuff with them for almost 2 months) - No additional last minute "I have your stuff" hostage fees. That being said, here are a few things that helped this process: - Pack your stuff really, really, really well. Tie everything down with ropes because they lift the craft up with a fork lift to put it on the truck. - I would check to see if your renters insurance covers your stuff while in transit. They offer insurance (which we bought, because our previous renters policy didn't cover it), but I never felt great about it. I kinda doubt we'd get fair price for damaged stuff like you might with more standard renters insurance. - If you are super-duper paranoid and don't have alternative insurance, you should take pictures of your stuff as it's being packed to prove it's packed well (just in case) - Be smart - these things are easy to break into. Try to find a secure place to store them while you are moving in/moving out. All in all, I was really impressed with this service. read more

I was moving away from Boston in June 2010 without knowing where I might end up or when I might finally get settled. I shopped around, and settled on Door to Door because of price and a friend's recommendation. Door to Door will quote you a price for the total service: Drop off of the empty unit, pick it up when full, and transport. No hidden fees, no surprises. Quotes can change according to gas prices, but they tell you up front what the window is for honoring the quote. Storage is on a separate price schedule; there are discounts for 3 and 6 month contracts. My unit ended up in storage for about 15 months as I conducted a prolonged job search. I ended up calling Door to Door regularly, usually to pay my bill, but also to renew my storage contract, or often to discuss quotes to places I might move. The customer service was excellent each and every time. I found every staff member to be extraordinarily helpful, courteous, and knowledgeable. At one point, I needed access to my unit, and again, the assistance was impeccable and my needs totally covered. Upon delivery, I found my unit exactly as I'd left it; no major shifting had occurred, nothing broken. After 15 months, there was no mold, mildew, or weird smells, and very little dust-- less than it would have accumulated had I stored it in a basement. Overall, I was extremely pleased with my experience, and would recommend them without hesitation. read more

This copy is a rip off if you have allot of stuff the move. the containers are small and i needed three times as many as they indicated. Then when i wanted to cancel because it didn't make since and we was unaware that some items i have to store would not fit. They still charged me and charged cancellation fee. Nothing was used. so i got almost no money back for no service. read more

I used door to door for storage and moving. I was nervous about using a company I had never heard of but the relatively low price (PODs and other companies were 2x as expensive) gave me no choice. I was again nervous when the thing arrived because it looks like a flimsy wood box. All of that said, the experience was perfect. My consultant was friendly, helpful, and always responsive. Despite my fears, the box was delivered on time and picked up on time. My stuff arrived in San Diego (after storage for 3 months I moved cross country) in perfect condition. The staff went out of their way to help me figure out my plans and they delivered at my convenience. I was so nervous about this big move and about relinquishing my belongings to a random company... but this worked perfectly and I have no regrets. read more

DO NOT TRUST; HIDDEN FEES Having paid $30-40 a month for storage, I had my ONE unit transferred 6 hours to the jessup storage location prior to moving it to my new home. I spent over $1000 just for the transfer (first cost disclaimer). I then had the unit transported outside my home. My glassware was all broken from the door to door handling. I was upset but I had bought insurance. 2 weeks later, I get a bill for $150 dollars from the Jessup location. They called it a cleaning fee because some of the glass they themselves broke was still in the nooks and corners of the unit (second cost disclaimer). I then called customer service who told me that their insurance has a $250 deductible, that it takes a minimum of 6-12 weeks to process, and that the claim form will not be accepted until I paid the cleaning fee (third cost disclaimer). So now I have broken glassware worth just under $250, but that the insurance I paid for will not cover, and I am paying an additional $150 to the people who broke it. I'm never using this sham of a service again. I'm going to use public storage and rent a uhaul or movers to transport my items from now on. read more

* DO NOT USE, NASTY CUSTOMER SERVICE* Rude and obnoxious over the phone service. Their first inclination is to argue with you about why their are late, unresponsive and inflexible. Tommy at door 2 door actually stated that no one had ever asked for a container to be dropped off outside of the 11-1pm weekday only time frame, this after being 10 days late. Also never pay the whole cost up front as you will surely need a withholding of payment as a bargaining chip with this poor business. read more

Everything about our move sucked EXCEPT Door to Door. Great customer service, on time, reasonable prices; I'd recommend them to anyone.

I figured I'd give an update since things have changed since writing this review. So i'm not sure if it was this review or what - but not 48 hours after this post went live, Door to Door contacted me and said they'd deliver my pods. There was a catch. The cost was triple the usual delivery fee and I had 30 minutes to unload 2 pods. Otherwise I'd have to pay $600 for delivery. Normally it's $109. So I took the $350 option and said I'd unload it in 30 minutes (mind you - I had offered up this option the first time I called but they were not budging) Nevertheless, 5 days later, my storage units were delivered and we unloaded it in 20 minutes and are done with this fiasco. The driver wasn't the friendliest but we didn't care. We were happy that Door to Door met us half way on this and saw our predicament and delivered our units. So for that I am appreciative. read more

We just moved from College Park, MD to Portland, OR. We chose Door to Door mainly because it the cheapest option for a coast-to-coast move that we could find. We read a few negative reviews and thought that we might encounter problems, but everything worked out great. The salesperson was really helpful, the drivers were all on time, and our stuff actually arrived early. The estimate was over two weeks, but it ended up being a few days less. read more

We used Door to Door when we downsized into a temporary apartment. When we bought our new house about 2 hours away, we were told they did not deliver to that zip code. We found out they only deliver when the destination is within 40 miles of a "hub". The nearest hub is where we live now. Had we known this, we would have just put our furniture in a storage unit. Now we have to get a UHaul, unload the pods and drive to our new house. Then unload again. Ridiculous. This is not the purpose of companies like Door to Door. Marketing says "nationwide." It's misleading! Will never recommend them! read more
